I heard this is THE bakery to come to when in Chinatown. I wanted to love it but I felt their baked goods are oiler than others I have tasted and the items are heavy with the lard. It was okay but not my go to place. I will say, the fried glutenous rice with pork filling was tasty but the filling was insufficient. It's a no frills place and they run great specials. As the colloquialism goes, "big bang for the buck." We purchased a few items as we were on vacation and I swear the cashier gave me the disapproving look as we spent less than $15. I love going to Asian bakeries since they're usually far less pricey than their European counterpart. By far, Mashion Bakery is one of the best Chinese style bakery in downtown Toronto. Once you step into the store you will find buns of all kind, baked or steamed, and various cakes stacked with cream and fruits and decorated with frosting. They're individually wrapped and it's a self-serve model where you take a tray and a pair of tongs and select whatever you like. One takeaway is to visit this bakery in the morning for best results. I find that the baked goods especially the buns and egg custard tarts are at their peak while still warm plus there's not a lot of choices left when you come in the afternoon or nearer to closing time. My top 3 go-to favourites here are the Cheese Beef Hotdog Bun, Pineapple Red Bean Bun, and Baked BBQ Pork Bun. Although a lot pricier compared to regular buns, the cheese beef hotdog bun is soft and tender and the quality of the beef hotdog is not bad at all. The pineapple red bean bun although a bit sweeter for my liking (due to the red bean filling) has a good ratio of filling to bread. I liked to get the baked version of the bbq pork bun rather than the steamed one because the bread is better. Prices are reasonable and definitely one of the best cheap eats in Toronto. read more

This bakery gives off a fresh and clean vibe right from the entrance. I tried a mini apple crumble and it was warm, crunchy on top, and full of cinnamon flavor. The packaging was neat and grease-free. I liked how the staff used tongs and didn't touch the pastries directly. Even the napkin holder was spotless. This is one of the long-time Chinese bakeries that continue to serve us cheap treats without complaints from the beginning of time, it seems. I once grabbed a box-full of egg tarts and brought them to work which was a hit. Who can resist those cute yellow tarts? And when I needed a fix in the morning after coffee, something easy on the system, they have those sweet melt-in-your-mouth buns with various fillings like ham and egg, which are very satisfying. The selection is over-whelming and I find myself reading the reviews for more opinions on the different items I see, but not sure if I should try. On the counter there were even some types of bagels, and they sure didn't look like any bagel I've ever seen before. Now, would you try one? So many unique asian bakery items! I got the green bean pineapple bun which caught my eye because I've never seen one with the green bean filling before. Pineapple buns are some of my favorite asian bakery items and I was super excited to try this. Safe to say, it was delicious! The mung bean filling was perfectly sweet and reminded me of my childhood, while the pineapple bun itself had a delicious soft and sweet crust and pillowy bread. Highly recommend! read more

We came when they opened and everything was still fresh and semi hot. Amazing Hong Kong bakery with amazing prices. Ordered the Steamed Pork Bun, Pineapple Bun, Curry Pastries, Ham Sui Guk, and Egg tarts. Steam The buns were super fluffy and flavorful. The curry pastry was super flaky and filled with curry beef. The egg tarts were a little sweet, but the crust was flaky as well. Quality of the options are good and the prices are better! Highly recommend this spot! read more

My friends and I stumbled across the bakery while exploring Chinatown. We wandered in and noticed that there were not a lot of bakery goods available. I looked up their hours on Yelp and saw that they were closing for the night soon. The establishment only accepts cash or debit cards. The buns and bakery goods are sorted and organized on shelves and the tables in the middle. Name tags with their prices are placed nearby to identify the items. We grabbed a bunch of bakery goods and the total came out to $10.25. The employee did the math in his head, made me wonder if he really calculated everything correctly. There was no receipt provided. The food was alright in my opinion. I wasn't crazy about the pork bun, red bean bun, melon cake, and few other items. The buns were really dry. However, the banana mochi-like-texture bakery food (around 6-8 pieces) was pretty good. I definitely recommend that item and the sponge cakes. read more

Sometimes they've got discounted bags of assorted buns up front that they want you to take off their hands quickly, and it's like half a dozen buns or so for $2.50 per bag. PER BAG. Different bags have different things so take a look at what they have before settling with a bag or two. Deals are posted out in the front and they're pretty nice. There are several bakeries on Spadina to choose from, but I ended up grabbing some buns from here after seeing a couple Chinese grandpas snacking on buns and reading the newspaper at the front of the shop. Was looking for egg tarts and this place seemed to be the spot many people were directing us to! They have a great deal on a variety of different kinds of breads but you can't beat the 5 for $2 mini egg tarts. They tasted fresh but nothing out of this world. The major downside was that the egg tarts were a bit cold so it must have been made and sitting there for a bit before we got to it. This is your standard Chinese bakery where it's self serve then you bring your tray and baked goods to the counter to pay. My nostalgia for Hong Kong styled baked goods came back alive here and was rewarded with some great items. It is a bit more expensive than some of it's neighbours in the area but don't cheap out and get the better ones here for only 50 cents more. Trust me... it's worth all those 50 pennies. It's hard to differentiate the decent from the good bakeries here... they all carry the same items and the deals are thrown at you on the sidewalk signs. Mashion is like most typical Chinese bakeries... functional and all the baked good are on display with easy access to them. Just grab a tray and tongs... and go at it! Also, the family running the place keeps this place pretty clean and is always wiping or putting this away. At 5 pm, this bakery had a lot of stock of all items still and they were still adding fresh items more to the shelves. I also noticed they were taking a lot of the morning items away and putting them into large bags at random to be steeply discounted at the front. For only $2.50 a bag, you get at least 7 to 9 morning old buns. I know the typical goods are baked BBQ pork buns, steamed buns, egg tarts, pineapple buns, swiss rolls, coconut tarts, sesame balls, and mochi. My personal favourite has to be mochi balls. I bought the red bean and peanut filled ones with 2 other items to satisfy my childhood memories. Red Bean Mochi - The mochi was very good... gooey, soft, tender, and not too thick. Just enough to give a great chew before tasting the red bean filling. The red bean filling is creamy and not too sweet but I would say that it's missing the adzuki taste a bit. 4/5 Peanut Mochi - Similar to the red bean, the mochi is very good. One of the better ones from HK bakery I've had in a while. The peanut filling was lightly sugared and a good crunch to the mochi. What could have elevated this to be perfect is that they roasted the peanuts with sugar so you get more of a flavour. Still a great mochi. Be ready to potentially horde this one from peanut lovers. They might not want to share. 4.5/5 Red Bean Sesame Ball - Deep fried mochi part was nice and mostly greaseless and filled with creamy red bean. I think they were using the same red bean filling in the mochi so it was good that its wasn't too sugary but missing the adzuki taste. 4/5 Taro 'tart' - Traditionally it is a flakey dough covering creamy sweetened taro filling. This was probably the weakest of the bunch. It had thin soft semi flakey dough covering a generous amount of taro creamy filling with soft chunks. The baked good was mostly flavourless and was disappointing that way. 3/5 This is one of the better options in Chinatown and would recommend to go for their solid offerings over the many cheaper offerings elsewhere. read more

Went there today. I had their veggie springroll, their ham sui guk & their curry beef bun. I thought their vegetable springroll had a strange taste. They must of been just made when I bought them because they were still warm. The seasoning they used was very artificial tasting & there was not enough filling, but the wrapper was crispy & fried nicely. They just need to work on the filling. Their ham sui guk was ok. It wasn't crispy enough I found. I wish they had vegetable or chicken ones. Pork has a strange after taste for me. The curry beef bun however was so good this time & the last few times I got it. They must have changed the recipe. So much better now. The texture of the filling is much more ground beef like. Definitely an item I will get again. Last year I rated this item a 4/5. I was inpressed because they improved this reecipe. Definite 5/5 now. I rate this place 5/5. It's fast, convenient & affordable. They have 3 items at least that I consider a solid 5/5 (included in this & previous reviews). Ecstatic that it's part of Toronto's food scene. When I'm in the area, I buy the pastry that has melon filling and pastry with taro filling. They're sweet and full of carbs, so eating these once a week should not be bad. I don't buy the buns with meat filling so I have no opinion on those. The bakery did something new and that's to pack every individual bun and pastry inside a cellophane clear bag. In my opinion, that just creates more unnecessary plastic waste, but that's the decision by the bakery and I will accept their decision. The aisles are too narrow because there are tables placed in the middle, so please set your backpack on the floor for other customers to pass by. Thanks. I stopped by here to grab some bread, and I got two peanut mochis, two red bean ones, a green onion bread, and a green bean pineapple bun. The mochis were not very sticky and the filling was not very much compared to the mochi around it. The green onion bread was quite tasty, as there were a lot of green onions and the bread was chewy. The green bean pineapple bun was not as good; the bread didn't really have the right texture, and the pineapple part was not crunchy at all. I walk to here from my office (15 minute walk) quite often in the summer. I'm not sure if you can claim these as the BEST BUN's in CHINATOWN... but it definitely is the best VALUE. With 5$ in mind to spend everytime I come in here, I walk out with enough food to feed a family of 3. Most items are $1 , but if you buy 2, it turns to $1.50! I usually get the BBQ Pork Steamed Buns, BBQ Pork in Pineapple Bun, Egg Tarts, Chicken Burger (at the front counter, 2 for $3.50. Try this.) This place is CASH only - no tax. I am a fan! Main things influencing my love for this place: the variety of baked goods that they have and the price. You can get so many different items for so little money. Everything I bought was absolutely delicious and filling. For a day of sight seeing this place is a must. You can pick up plenty of snacks to eat on the go for some pocket change. I spent less than $5 at this place and had enough food for the day and breakfast the next day. There is not much of a seating area so you pretty much have to grab what you want and take it on the go. I've been to a few bakeries along Spadina and this is the one I come back to. It's the best one in the area. The steamed buns are very generously filled, compared to other bakeries (I'm looking at you Ding Dong), the bread is high quality, tastes good, and is always consistent (I'm looking at you Ding Dong), and the walnut puff cookies have great taste, but perhaps more importantly texture and bite (say it with me). The place tends to be cleaner than other bakeries, and the cakes in the middle aisle are a great fluffy treat. The prices are a tiny bit higher here but come on, you're getting 3 steamed pork buns for $2.25, and a huge cookie for $0.60. What are you complaining about here? read more

Service downgraded. My family is around chinatown so whenever I come back I come to buy some bakeries, since its grand opening years ago. I came here this morning. Some items increased price since my last visit. understandable. I wanted to buy some egg tarts and asked for a plastic or paper box wrap so that the egg tarts dont crash. They said no. I said I used to get paper boxes all the time before and they said I need to purchase over 5 dollars. I said Didn't I just paid my $8 dollar bill, and they said its a completed bill already so doesnt count...... u must pay extra for a box.... There are a few other bakeries around spadina and dundas.
