I tried the black sesame mochi bread--light, pillowy, and filled with a delightful little white mochi surprise. The crème brûlée almond tart was incredible too, with its thick, eggy custard and a blueberry-almond center. And the Hitotoki matcha tart? Gorgeous and just perfect. It was my first visit, and I discovered the bakery through their 2nd-anniversary IG post. It was okay. Tried three items: Matcha Lava Tart - The staff said this had the strongest matcha flavour among their matcha items. But there was no "lava" at all... just a layer of cream sitting on a thick tart base. You do get some matcha flavour, but definitely not that rich and flowing matcha sauce I saw in those online reels. Matcha Mont Blanc - Too sweet. The green noodle-shaped topping is actually made from a kind of bean paste - not much matcha taste, but had a strong bean flavour instead. And again, it was too sweet to my liking. Taro Tart - This one was good. Taro-flavoured cream on top, with taro paste underneath, then a layer of custard with mochi at the bottom. Had a rich taro flavour. Still a bit sweet, but not as overwhelming as the Mont Blanc. Overall it was not bad, although TBH I haven't really found great matcha desserts in Toronto so far. read more

Checked this little cafe out as a quick walk from our hotel before we headed out of town for a coffee and a couple pastries. I love the little hole in the wall vibe and the modern look they've done with the space. The staff members were a little on the quiet side and a little tough to hear (and may not have fully understood me?) but were very kind and polite. The pastry selection, while maybe a little on the small side, is absolutely otherworldly in appearance. If I could have taken home one of everything, I absolutely might have. I ended up getting the creme brulee tart, pistachio croissant roll, and the tiramisu latte. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until I opened the box later that I got the one cocoa dusted matcha tart instead of the pistachio roll. Oh well, I'm not going to complain too much since, as I said, I was happy with literally anything I got. The creme brulee tart - 10/10 would recommend. Crunchy, flaky tart with creamy creme brulee hit all the right notes of layers of flavor and texture. Mmm, delicious. The matcha tart was decent though I may have been slightly bummed from not getting what I had been expecting. Regardless, another delicious treat, though definitely more on mellower side flavor-wise than the creme brulee. Still good but not quite what I was hoping for. The same went for the tiramisu latte. While I absolutely loved the presentation with the lady fingers on top, it did make it a little difficult to actually get in there and use them with the cup being so full before they got soggy and eventually disintegrated into the drink. The drink itself was OK but again pretty mild on both flavor and sweetness (and I definitely like things a little on the sweeter side). I feel like maybe a sweetened mascarpone whipped topping or something to really cap it off would have finished the look and maybe rounded out the drink a bit. Oh well, maybe next time. All in all, maybe not my go-to coffee shop in town, but definitely a great little place to stop in for a treat or two! read more

I stumbled upon Hitotoki Bakery, a Japanese bakery that recently expanded from downtown, and was immediately drawn in by its understated, minimalist exterior. The space carries a calm, cozy vibe--think warm wood accents paired with soft lighting--quietly inviting you to step inside. Each pastry and loaf is beautifully displayed, reflecting the delicate attention to detail you'd expect from a Japanese-style bakery. Although the selection was a bit limited later in the day, I managed to try their strawberry puff pastry tart and brown sugar walnut bread. The tart had crisp, flaky layers with a light, buttery texture, balanced by a fresh strawberry topping that wasn't overly sweet. The brown sugar walnut bread was equally enjoyable--soft with a gentle caramel-like aroma, and studded with walnuts that added a satisfying bite. Overall, the flavors were subtle, well-balanced, and not too heavy on sweetness. Parking right in front can be a bit tricky, with limited spots available, and being located along Highway 7 means traffic can get quite busy. Visited Hitotoki Bakery to try out their fall menu items. We got the tiramisu tart which had a flaky, crunchy pastry which i really liked. The pistachio croissant was also great, topped with pistachio crumbles and filled with a creamy pistachio center that wasn't too sweet. I also tried the black sesame latte. The flavor was nice but most of the black sesame seemed to settle at the bottom in a thick paste that was hard to mix, so we ended up scooping it out to eat with a spoon. Most of the black sesame taste came from that paste, so it wasn't the easiest to drink. There's minimal seating inside, and when we went there was only one worker, so there was a bit of a wait to order. Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind. We also got the sweet potato shokupan to go, there was not as much filling as I would've liked, but the bread itself was soft, fluffy, and really delicious. First impression - the store was dimly lit and looked a little grungy. There is minimal seating and seems to be more styled as a take out bakery. They serve De Mello coffee but they didn't have a lot of their specialty drinks the day I visited. As for the pastries, we tried the crème brûlée tart which looked more like a flan tart. I read about this place on BlogTo and bookmarked it for a visit in the future. On Thursday afternoon, I finally had a chance to visit this cafe. I could not wait to taste their pastry items and drinks! The cafe is a very small place, so it is mainly for take-out. There are about four to six seats available, if you would like to sit and eat or drink. The decor was filled with small pots of plants and a quirky clock, plus the warm colours on the walls created a welcoming vibe. A young friendly lady at the counter greeted me and she helped me to decide what to order. I have read about their pastry items, so I ordered two Creme Brulee Almond Tarts. Also, I ordered a Hojicha Latte. The Hojicha Latte was good- I could taste the light roasted flavour. It was quite subtle, so this drink would be great for someone who would like to try it for the first time or for anyone who likes light flavour. The Creme Brulee Almond Tarts were delicious! My boyfriend and I had one each and we wanted more! We enjoyed the light flaky texture of the tart, the buttery flavour in each bite, and the lightly sweet and jiggly creme brulee on top. This new Japanese bakery offers a small selection of premium pastries, such as chestnut Mont Blanc Pastries, fruit pastries, cookies, Japanese shokupan and cafe drinks. There is very little seating inside. They have some stale shokupan for you to sample. Prices are on the high side. I got the chestnut Mont Blanc pastry which came to over $8 (expensive). Appreciate that the packaging was premium, but the dessert was not very large. The cream inside the pastry with some of the best I've ever had and you can see the vanilla bean seeds. Keep in mind that the sweetness level of the desserts here are catered towards Asian taste and not as sweet as other bakeries. This would make a fancy gift but I probably won't come here again for myself. read more

They also have several drinks available like a matcha latte and hojicha latte. The store is primarily take out only where there is a table to enjoy your goodies and drinks if you want to dine in. The store is brightly lit where you are hit with the smell of baked goods as soon as you enter (I also saw staff creating their Mont Blanc tarts as well during my visit!) I stopped by Hitotoki during their soft opening week. Staff were friendly as I walked in. They did mention that all the pastries are made fresh daily. It was difficult to decide what to get judging from the delectable display. I opted for an egg tart and a loaf of shokupan. The egg tart was delicious - the outer layers were flakey and crispy while the egg custard filling was smooth and velvety. The shokupan comes whole where you do need to cut it yourself. The bread was soft and fluffy, which makes for a perfect piece of toast! I thoroughly enjoyed the shokupan. Overall, great new bakery in the Yonge/College area! Not impressed. We ordered: #1. Crème Brulee Almond Tart #2. Strawberry Cream Tart #3. Mont Blanc Tart #4. Mont Blanc Latte Ok. They all look pretty. Nice in the pictures. However, once I started eating, I found the products (all of them) lacked integration of each ingredient. Also all the ingredients were somewhat lacking their "statements". For example, the base "tart" is a mix of croissant like texture with somewhat chewy bready texture. It lacked buttery taste for "tart" or "croissant". And it was hard to cut even with a knife, also hard to bite into as it has a lot of runny decorations on top. I ended up a lot of mess as I ate them. I was left questioning- what was it that I just had? Mont Blanc Latte - I am wondering about its intention. Is it a drink or dessert? Ok, can be both. But I was a bit confused, as it had a lot of chestnut cream with a whole chestnut on the top and the latte underneath was bitter without sweetness. And it had a lid covering the cup that only allowed a straw through it. So, if I eat the top chestnut cream topping, then the drink will lose its sweetness. I ended up opening the lid, stirring it to get the latte taste and chestnut flavor topping integrated together. It was messy. And the top chestnut - wondered how should I eat it? Picking it up with my fingers? Or should I use a folk just to eat a piece of chestnut? Or should I give up? Ummm. read more

If you have not been to Hitotoki, make it a priority to stop by ASAP! You won't be sorry. I happened to be strolling by when the new shop's elegant interior and gorgeous pastry case caught my eye. Upon walking inside, two friendly staff members offered samples of pillowy shokupan bread and crispy palmier before sharing that all pastries are made fresh in-house each morning. They recommended the chestnut Mont Blanc and crème brûlée almond tarts, so I opted for both. It's no exaggeration to say these are some of the best pastries I've had in recent history. The chestnut flavored strings on top of the Mont Blanc were surprisingly almost as fluffy as the vanilla custard whip which it enveloped. The crème brûlée tart's topping almost reminded me of a soft flan and had a surprising burst of blueberry inside a delicate almond cream. Both pastries had a croissant-like crust that was crispy yet tender with the perfect filling-to-dough ratio. All flavors were so light, elegant, and perfectly balanced. Blueberry tart was just some whipped cream in the tart(puff pastry like) topped with blueberries, nothing special about it. Not worth the price. I bet the pastry has no butter. Small Japanese bakery replacing what used to be a bubble tea shop. They are newly opened and have a nice selection of flaky pastries, Japanese bread, and drinks. This place can get packed at times and you'll have to line up a bit but never more than 15min. I've only gotten their tarts which are delicious. I recommend the strawberry and creme brule (really flan) flavour ones. They do sell out though so go early! Due to space limitations there's only 2-3 seats so it's not really a sit down coffee shop. read more

Great experience! Was there for their grand opening and got the four free tarts. They were delicious and well made. There was also a buy one get one free deal so I had the opportunity to try all the tarts! The service was good as staff was really friendly and (one felt bad for me as I waited three hours for their grand opening lol) I think it was worth it though. As I entered the bakery, I could smell a whiff of freshly baked bread and the tarts plus it was warm inside after being out in the cold.. The egg tart custard was creamy, buttery and the outside layer was crispy and flaky. Service: Was quick and the servers were knowledgeable. Very cute Japanese bakery. I've tried their regular egg tart and the cream brûlée tart and tried a bit of their soft shokupan (milk bread). Flavour of the egg tart is good however the crust should be crispier considering how many layers you can see. I ended up putting it in the oven and that made it much crispier and more delicious. The creme brûlée on top of the tart can be a bit more flavourful in terms of the toffee/caramel flavour that creme brûlées should have. The piece of shokupan that I tried was super pillowy soft. It is $9 per loaf, which is very expensive for bread, but honestly very delicious. Lots of different flavours of tarts to choose from here and they all look beautiful. read more
