I love the Asian purple taro! Not sure why it's purple. Moreover I prefer virtually any Asian pastry over most any other in the world--especially donuts (too sweet). I would pay $$ and eat most Asian pastries till I am sick when they come from places like I Fu Tang (in the US), especially Wife Cakes. This purple taro gem from Kin-Kin is big, not expensive, PURPLE!, flaky, dense, fresh, heavy for its size...oh I thought if I eat 6 it ruin my lunch AND dinner, but so what! Sadly it was not very good. Kinda bitter, nothing vibrant or nutty like taro can be. Yuk. The rest of the pastries seem traditional and traditionally good. Not the taro. Darn. read more

I have worked in the same building where this bakery is and have not visited them in 3 years until now. I was pleasantly surprised by how well and freshly made their baked goods are. They are simply better than the ones in Chinatown and T&T. They taste better and more fillings. The prices are great as you can get discounted on more quantities of bakery you purchase. A solid place to grab a snack or light lunch. The buns are decent - not bad, but not excellent. Due to its location, the price is generally higher than what you'd see in similar bakeries in Chinatown. You've got your run-of-the-mill selection, such as hot dog buns, BBQ pork buns, etc, etc. However, they sometimes offer hot buns in the middle aisle, which I think are much better than the regular items on the shelves (and helps differentiate them from other Asian bakeries). My personal favourite is the Philly Cheesesteak bun, which has a fair amount of meat and is quite tasty! The bakery also sells bubble tea (which I haven't tried) and HK-style milk tea. I previously went to Lucullus Bakery on Elm St. for my Asian buns and HK milk tea, but since it closed down, Kin-Kin is my go-to spot. The milk tea is super cheap and definitely has a nice, rich flavour. It's not the best I've tried, but it's good enough that I don't mind coming back. Overall, Kin-Kin is worth visiting if you're in the area and don't want to make the trek to Chinatown for pastries. read more

Went there looking to buy the 6 bun deal, but ended up grabbing the 2 bun deal plus a smoothie for 7.99 no tax! I asked for help and the older lady was very kind. Smoothie was fantastic too in mango/strawberry and the buns have always been good. The sizes of the buns were much bigger than I expected for such a cheap price. I was taking a short cut through the Atrium at Bay when I stumbled upon this little bakery. My mom used to buy me sesame balls (filled with bean curd) all the time when I was living at home. I was so excited when I came in here, and they had some. I was even more excited when it was just over a buck, and still warm! It was very good, and obviously freshly made. I went another time near the end of the day and unfortunately they were out of the sesame balls, so I browsed around and opted for the coconut pineapple bun. It was soft and delicious, but not too sweet. Again, you could tell that it was made fresh, and the perfect size for an afternoon snack. I've gone at lunch time, and they have quite the variety of food. Some savoury meals and some sweet. You could make a great lunch out eating there, and get a lot for your money. I can't remember what the bun special is. I think it's 5 buns for 6 bucks or something so you could get a few savoury and a few sweet and bam you got a nice little lunch! Cute little hidden gem in the downtown core. My favourite would be the "healthy bun" with its description being "eggless, less sugar, raisins and walnuts." It is quite delicious and filling. The buns are a good size and this place is convenient if you don't feel like walking all the way to Chinatown. They are a wee bit pricier than Chinatown, only a few more dimes to some, 50% more to others. However. There is a staff member (she's either the manager or a lifer there) whose customer service skills are nonexistent. I've noticed her on every visit because she's incredibly sullen and does not give the impression that she wants to be there. She just glares or looks at customers with dead eyes. Today, I stopped in for some cake. They have individually-wrapped slices of Swiss rolls at the back, and there were only two slices left of the flavour I wanted. I noticed that each slice had different coloured stickers at the bottom so I asked this staff member what was the difference between the two. "You don't care. Don't worry." "But I do care, that's why I am asking." "Don't worry!" I figured, OK, language issue, so I repeated my question in Mandarin (I guessed from her accent) but she still responded in English but even more agitatedly "You don't care! Don't worry! I can't tell you. You don't ask!" Um. Tried the question in Cantonese and added that I just wanted to know if this meant one slice was way significantly older than the other. That I was going to buy a slice anyway. "You don't ask me this question! I don't have to tell you!" "So if I ask one of your colleagues, will they yell at me too?" "Go ahead! They won't tell you anything!" Then she walks to the back and just stares. So now I am DYING to know so I ask one of the other staff (both gals seemed very pleasant) about the stickers while the sullen one watches from her counter. "Can you tell me what these stickers mean?" Was she going to tell me off? Was she going to refer me to the sullen one? "Oh! I think they just mean different bakers baked the slices." Weird. So if it were true, why was it such a big deal that the sullen one couldn't tell me? Because the bakers works different shifts so one slice is 8 hours less fresh than the other? If the nicer staff member was told to make it up, couldn't they have given her a more plausible explanation? I put both slices back, sadly, because I really wanted cake. No big loss for the bakery, they've got steady business in a choice location so customer service is clearly not a priority. So I won't implore that you not shop there. But I will suggest you stop by the next time you have 5 minutes to spare at the Atrium and ask the sullen one about the stickers under the slices and let me know what she says! read more

I came here on Saturday on the way to the greyhound station and I saw the breakfast special..2 buns and a Hong Kong style Tea or Coffee for...3 dollars with no tax! I had to try it because I've passed by this place one gajillion times, and I've never had the time to stop here. I looked through the selection of buns, and there was a lot to choose from. I settled on the Ham and Corn Salad bun and the Hot Dog and Cheese bun, with the HK Tea. The hot dog bun was great, a little sweet, but still good. I could've used some ketchup with it though. The Ham and Corn Salad bun was great, but left a huge mess everywhere. I'm pretty sure I left a small pile of corn around me at the Greyhound Station. The hong-kong style tea was awesome..just how my mom used to make it! I wish I had put some sugar in though. I loved this place! I'll definitely stop by again when I'm on my way to wherever :) read more

I'll give them a 4 stars for their smoothies and 2 stars for the actual bakery items. Their smoothies are made with real fruit (and ice-cream I think), and they taste great and refreshing! I wasn't a huge fan of their deserts though. The bread was rather dry, and overall it was just meh. read more

We LOVE Asian bakeries and were quite happy to have stumbled upon Kin-Kin whilst in the Atrium. Pros: - Lots of options for buns: custard, beef curry, pulled pork, almond, etc. All the buns we tried were huge, soft, fresh, and utterly delicious. - A microwave is available if you like your buns warm. - Excellent prices - whether you want 1 bun or 9, the price is right. No tax on larger orders! - Lots of tempting desserts available, though we didn't end up trying any. Maybe next time. - Clean, tidy displays. Cons: - None. I can see how this could be a dangerous place if you live or work in the area - we pretty much lost our self-control after the first bite! Can't wait to return! read more

The good: great deals (the prices are great). Some of the buns are SO good. A lot of the dessert buns are really good. Some of the savoury ones are good too, but some are really disappointing - the salty veggie bun was almost inedible. My faves include the flaky egg tart, custard bun, BBQ pork bun, ham and cheese bun, and for some reason the chopped up hot dog bun really hits the spot. They take Interac, don't charge you tax and give you a plastic bag for free. read more

Have been coming here for a year or so. Good place, solid and consistent quality. Prices are a bit more expensive than my usual choices in Chinatown but this is a convenient location. Dan tat was good, flaky pastry and custard not too sweet (which I like), raisin twists and coconut twists are good. They have steamed bau (several varieties), I chose the vegetarian one which was average. This is a good option in terms of convenience of location, and the buns as well as the dan tat which I have had, are good. They have a lot of other items which I have not yet tried. read more

Okay place for a quick bite but watch out for line hoppers - the staff won't. So yesterday around rush hour, I stood in line behind a teen. Out of nowhere, a middle aged man dropped a paper bag with a bun on the counter and hovered, leaning over the till. As in the man stood close enough to see what the teen entered on the card machine. I wondered if he was the teen's dad or boss or something cause he stood sideways and turned his head to face outward. The man stared at me really weirdly. Whatever, I stared back. The teen entered his pin, turned away and left. I put my drink on the counter, but the woman at the till had punched in the man's purchase first. I actually saw his purchase amount of $1.50 because once again, the man wasn't standing facing the counter and blocking view of the machine...he was standing to the side of it. He had to lean his arm from my left side over to my right, in front of my face, to tap his card. AWKWARD. And rude. And here's the icing. The woman at the till didn't stand up for me. She didn't say "sir the line starts here" or asked "who's next?". She let this man hover over the teen's pin number. She punched in the man's order before mine. And when I pointed out to her that this man had butted his way in, she didn't seem to understand something why something was wrong. If she was confused when the teen was entering his pin, she shouldn't have been confused when the the teen left, I was still in line and the man still leaning on the counter. There's no point to rules or common courtesy if you don't enforce things. The least she could have done was ask "are you guys together?" cause it's a.) suspicious when you have a customer hovering over the card machine when they're not the one making the purchase and b.) rude to your customers in line when you let someone in before them. It was rush hour, sure, but the teen still deserved his privacy and I did deserve to be served before Mr. Line Hopper. So do me a favour if you shop here and spot this guy - make it harder for him to do what he did to us. Ask him if he's paying for your order. Get in his way, cause he's already in yours, and the staff don't care if he sees your bank pin. read more

Kin-Kin Bakery is a handy bakery. It is clean and not overcrowded. They are not expensive at all and they have comfortable seats outside the shop. Coffee is not bad by considering the price. I like their Japanese cheese cake. They have good size sandwich for lunch. read more

I love Chinese bakeries. I'm pretty sure about 30% of my body composition is bakery goodness (with the 60% being bubble tea and 10% water. LOL). I've been to this place a few times over the years, and I love that they sell both pastries and bubble tea. Literally my two favourite things in one store. I still prefer going to Chinatown for pastries though. Not only is Kin-Kin quite more expensive in comparison (and a little less tasty?), but they also don't make/sell my favourite buns -- ham and (cream?) cheese. Kin-Kin does have ham and cheese, but they seem to use actual cheese instead of the ... cheese sauce? That Chinatown bakeries use? Whatever the case, I like the sauce much better and consider it a staple in Chinese pastries. Boo. :c Anyway, this is just my preference; many others will find the taste and price of the items perfectly fine for them. It's still a great, convenient place to grab a bun or two, especially considering that going to Chinatown can be a bit of hassle. Kin-Kin DOES have a leg up on their bubble tea though. Actually, I had just tried it for the first time yesterday since I joyfully saw that they now had grape green tea on their menu (and had extended their bubble tea menu by quite a bit since the last time I had visited). Naturally I ordered my fix, and I was not disappointed! However ... skip their tapioca. Just trust me on that. read more

Bought their chicken pie $1.90, the pie has no taste at all, doesn't smell like butter or chicken or anything, wonder what oil or fat they used for the pie crust! There are definitely cheaper bakeries closer to Chinatown, but for the Yonge and Dundas area, this is as good as it's gonna get, especially now that Lucullus is apparently closed. It's about $1.39 for a bun, but there are deals if you buy more (e.g. 6 buns for $7 and no tax). They have a decent breakfast special for 2 buns plus HK milk tea/coffee for $3.99. The buns are soft and fresh in the morning. I got the curry beef bun, which had a good amount of curry beef filling, and the almond twist which is soft and not too sweet. The milk tea is very bland and watery though.. definitely not steeped like traditional HK milk tea. read more

OOOOH I LOVEE their cheesecake! SOOO much better than Uncle Tetsu's to me. Very cheesy yet fluffy. It's like the bottom part is sponge cake and the top layer is loaded with cheese yet so fluffy! BEST of both worlds! I even like this more than western cheesecake. Oh and I LOVE their pineapple coconut bun. It has a good amount of filling unlike the scraps you get at other places. read more

I was walking by and saw the appetizing buns, so I went in and ordered a sandwich. The young employee came and served it for me, I thanked her, she wrapped my sandwich and took it to the cash. The boss, an Asian woman, was on her cell phone talking and laughing. The employee handed her my sandwich and the natural sequence would be like, the boss says hi, puts my sandwich in a bag, I pay, take my sandwich, and we say goodbye. Well, it didnt go like that at all. The boss is still on the phone talking away, she has my wrapped up sandwich in front of her. I wait and wait and wait, thinking, "She's gonna hang up, say hello, give me my total, and I will pay". No. She keeps talking and talking, and I keep waiting and waiting for her to acknowledge my presence. After a while (an inappropriate eternity), she grabs the employee who served me and was passing by, and asks her in Korean (I suppose) what I ordered and/or what was the matter with me. The employee responds, and then, suddenly Mrs. Boss gets angry at her employee and actually SHOVES HER on her shoulder! I saw terror in the poor girl's eyes! That's when I decided to tell Mrs. Boss, loud and clear, to hang up the phone, acknowledge my presence and deal with my custom in a professional manner. Does she now hang up? NO, she does not, but she lies to me by saying this is a business emergency! Just because now I know, for having witnessed it first hand, that the boss of Kin Kin abuses her employees and disrespects customers, I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AND I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND HER STORE. read more
