My boyfriend took me on a little surprise date here and it was so cute! Their drink selection was absolutely unique and divine. My partner got a banana milk coffee and I got a Thai iced tea. The banana coffee tasted exactly how the Korean banana milk tastes! It was so good and they even decorated with a mini piece of banana on top. The Thai iced tea was also very good. The highlight for me was the macarons! I love macarons and they had so many cool flavours. We got Vietnamese coffee, matcha yuzu, hazelnut chocolate, mango, strawberry, and Hong Kong tea. My favourite was the Hong Kong tea and my partners was the strawberry. Great place, would definitely go again, the only thing I'd say is the service was a bit slow. read more

I've heard so much about this cafe close to the TMU campus and have been wanting to try it out. Upon walking in the cafe, it is a bit on the narrow side but still had a reasonable amount of seating. The menu had a good amount of options to choose from. Toron-taro: It sounded really promising and was a safe option to get. The drink came with toasted marshmallows on top. The taro drink was tasty. The pricing is a bit overpriced, but it looked really nicely displayed. The space here was nice and had plenty amount of plug outlets. The space wasn't too noisy (came around weekend night). Came here to try out these cute drinks with punny names. First time I got the Toron-ta-ro which was one of their specialty drinks and the drink I saw online that made me want to go here. It was yummy, I appreciated the torched marshmallow on it and how fluffy/whipped the drink was. I ended up coming back another time to get their cloud latte. The place was small yet cozy, so I liked the vibe. While waiting, I got a seat by the window and looked at the menu. Then when my friend arrived, we decided to order one drink and one pastry item. Since it was late in the evening, the young friendly man (barista) informed us that there were only two pastry items available. We both picked the same item- curry puffs. My friend ordered a hot cup of Storm Latte (black sesame, milk sesame oil, and charcoal). I picked a hot cup of Coconut Latte (espresso, milk, coconut syrup). When they were ready, the barista called us. I was happy that I had a hot drink and a warm pastry item to eat. The curry puff was delicious- it had a mild spicy kick, and the outer layer was flaky and oh-so-soft. Great spot near TMU to study/catch up with a friend. There's free wifi, seating was pretty limited, and I believe there are outlets around. The drink was pretty good. Last time around that I came here I remember there being more food options and this visit seemed pretty limited. The workers were very courteous and it was a great environment to get some work done. The decor is simple, bright, and creates a great atmosphere to get some work done / study individually or with a small group of friends. Plearn Cafe serves unique Asian flavored coffee and pastries. Plearn cafe is a cute little coffee shop near Toronto metropolitan University. The typical crowd are university students, but this spot is great for working as well. The Wi-Fi is fast. There is plenty of seating and most importantly a lot of power outlets. It is well maintained and a great spot to spend a few hours. The drinks here run on the expensive side, but there is an interesting variety of specialty cold drinks and bubble tea's you can choose from as well. I didn't try any of the food but they have pastries cakes and other baked goods available too. Overall this is a great aesthetic spot to spend your day. Plearn Cafe is located near the intersection of Gerrard and Church. This new coffee shop serves a wide variety of beverages (espresso and tea based) as well as baked items. They also have some coffee supplies available for purchase as well. The coffee shop is calming and well lit if you would like to get some work done quietly. They also have free wifi as well (password can be found at the coffee bar area). I went to visit Plearn Cafe on a Sunday morning around 10:30am. The shop was fairly quiet with a 2 other customers who had already ordered their drinks. Employees were friendly and I opted for an espresso tonic (had my beverage there). I took a seat and waited for my drink which took a few minutes to make. Staff kindly brought my beverage to me as well as gave me a glass of water, The espresso tonic was made well (also had a slice of orange which gave it a nice citrus flavour). The cafe was fairly empty during my time there (assuming since it's quite new). I'm certain it will be popular soon since it's so close to the university. Plearn has unique drinks that (understandably) cost more than your average latte. The Cloud Latte immediately caught my eye, and I loved that they've mimicked a landscape in a cup. The 'clouds' seemed to be made out of something with a cream cheese consistency - they didn't move around even as I drank the latte. My partner got the lychee carno - I wouldn't have thought that lychee and espresso went well together, but it was a decent drink. We came here on a Sunday to get some work done. Some of the tables here are very small - we needed one per person, and then drinks had to go on a third table / on the bench beside us. I came for a change of scenery for work and also to get some reading done. It's a cozy and unassuming cafe that's suitable for studying, working, reading, or catching up with friends! I was surprised by how many seats they have, given the small store front. The secret? Multiple small round tables. Very smart!!! They have quite a menu, spanning from good ol' espresso to innovative Toron-Ta-Ro. It gives enough choices to pick from for sure. Not all of their drinks are espresso-based so it's also suitable for non-coffee drinkers. The baristas were very friendly and helpful in giving suggestions as well. I started simple with Plearn, and it was delicious. It was very creamy, yet balanced. For my second tound I went with the coconut latte. It was a little on the sweeter side for me, tho maybe if asked, they would be able to reduce the sweetness? I shall ask next time! Definitely coming back to try their artsy drinks since I didn't get to this time :D Food wise, they serve some baked goods like cookies and brownies, but they also have savory meals like curry, noodles, and croffle. Very pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and drink quality of this place, but would only give it a bump due to the off-putting nature of the staff. On the positive side, the ambience is very calming and a great place to work/study -- the interior has a modern feel and a lot of great spots for photo ops! There are huge windows in front that bring in a ton of light during the day, and the massive tables make it a great spot for communal studying. I got the cloud latte and the taro latte, both of which were stunning but also tasted super good! On the other hand, the staff seemed to be somewhat unprofessional in openly chatting about the bad customers they had experienced during some of their other shifts. I understand that bad experiences can happen, but I felt that it made the experience very uncomfortable when it was relatively quiet so all you could hear was the staff dissing customers fairly loudly. They talked about purposely putting regular coffee into drinks when an annoying customer asked for decaf, and hinted at doing worse. Came early in the morning on a weekend so I was the only customer in the cafe. Different from the typical cafe. Bright and airy. Service was energetic and cheery. Accommodates over 30 people across 12 tables. Tables vary in size from group (10 ppl) to tables that fit only your coffee cups. There are electrical power outlets everywhere. Wifi tested at 530/36. I didn't try any of the cool drinks and tried the bundt cheesecake (bit heavy). Overall recommended. One of the cutest cafes I've been to. The chocolate croffle was surprisingly really good; there was a good balance of ice cream and chocolate syrup. The peanuts added a nice flavour and texture to the croffle. It's filled with students doing assignments so very hard to find a seat but I managed to grab a table when a group left. This is a fairly new cafe on Gerrard St and the name comes from the combination of 'play' and 'learn' which I found to be a bit misleading. I stumbled upon it recently and admittedly, I've walked by this location quite frequently and never noticed it as it's 'off the beaten path' so to say. Given the name, I thought it may be similar to a board game cafe, or with more to offer, aside from food and drink. They have a selection of 'standard' caffeinated drinks that you'd find on any menu, although I found these to be overpriced for the overall quality, after having tried the Cappuccino for $5.50 and the 'Heavy Cloud' cold brew for $7.50. They have an alternative drink menu with more of an asian-ingredient focus, although these aren't really my cup of tea. Speaking of which, they also have a tea menu, which is limited, and also pricey at $5.95/cup. I tried the cinnamon black tea which is flavoured with cinnamon, and star anise, although it tasted like an average tea you could prepare yourself. They do also have a food menu, although I thought the offerings to be a bit unusual; for example, they have a peanut curry chicken and coconut noodle pork, then they mix it up with croffles. They also have a selection of more Asian and Thai themed desserts such as custard buns and cookies, although I did not try. Overall it's a cute new cafe and I'm happy to support local businesses; however, it's in a bit of a difficult location and unless this becomes a 'destination place' known for its offerings, it may be challenging for them going forward.
