Love the Japanese aesthetic that they brought in sometimes rigid sometimes colourful Toronto. This truly reminds me of Japanese cafes in Tokyo. We got the red bean and matcha buns. It was the first time my friend tried a bun similar to this so Im happy to introduce her to a different pastry bun. The buns were soft in texture and sweet in taste but did not overpower the cream filling. The red bean one is too sweet for me but the matcha is just perfect. I've never tried and didn't know quite what to expect with a chilled cream bun, but I gotta say, I enjoyed it. Sure, Hattendo is a bit pricey, but the quality is obvious. The bun itself is soft and yet ever-so-slightly chewy to make it interesting. The cream fillings are smooth and thankfully not overly sweet. If I had one quibble, it would be that I'd want the flavours stronger. Tried the milk tea, chocolate and apple (seasonal flavour). Even if I'm a certified chocoholic, the apple was the one I actually enjoyed the most. So because of that, I'm definitely intrigued and will be back to try their other flavours. read more

This location was a bit difficult to find and I actually had to ask PATH security to direct me (it's across from Trade Secrets!). I ordered the Hojicha black sesame iced latte and the egg sandwich. I had wanted to order an egg sando but they were out and only 2 were available for people who had ordered ahead. I ended up with the egg burger and it was okay. Nothing overly spectacular in my opinion, but the bun was very soft. The Hojicha black sesame latte was good though! Not sure if the small size was worth the almost $7, but I definitely could taste the quality. You have to mix it quite well because my first sip contained a lot of black sesame (which I personally don't mind, but others may). Not sure if i'd come back simply because of the location, I may still try to get the egg sando at another location. UPDATE: It was the egg burger I had purchased that was okay. I wanted to try an alternative to the egg sando that they didn't have in stock. In addition, for the yelp event, the milk tea bun is the one I'd recommend out of the ones I tried (milk tea, matcha and custard). I wasn't expecting such a strong tea flavour but it's there (and i love that)! I'd recommend keeping them in the fridge as well as I had forgotten and left it out. Food: 3 Stars Service: 3 Stars Ambience: 3 Stars Fill Factor: Snack I did not get a chance to head down to their Baldwin location so when I learned that they recently opened a shop around Yonge and Bloor I figured I should give it a try. I had some pretty high expectations and though it was not bad I think Hattendo is a bit overhyped. This location can be found in the basement area of the Cumberland Terrace just across from Game and Hobby Zone. If you are coming from the subway walk out of the exit leading to Yonge and walk straight until you reach the escalators/stairs next to the Source, go down and keep walking straight, Hattendo will be on the left. The shop was larger than I anticipated and was very bright, clean and a bit empty. Many of the flavours were sold out when I arrived but I managed to get my hand on the matcha, custard, raspberry, azuki bean, and the whipped cream. I tasted most of them (except raspberry which I was told tasted like jam with custard) and I found that none of the flavours were too sweet. In fact, most of them were a bit on the blander side but nonetheless they were not bad. My favourite flavour had to be either the custard or the azuki bean. I did not realize until I opened one of the packages that it was a bun and not a pastry (d'oh!). The bun, which for some reason reminded me of the buns at Chinese bakeries, was soft and fairly small. There was a lot of cream packed into the small buns however I felt for the price (I paid around $21 for 5), it was a tad pricey for what you get. All in all, though my expectations were elevated due to the hype, I did enjoy the buns and definitely would not mind having them as a snack once in a while. I have been meaning to try the cream buns here for as long as I could remember. Calling in and reserving my order was easy. The person on the phone was helpful and nice! Finding Hattendo was not intuitive for a first-time goer like me. It's tucked away in the corner at the concourse level. I had to ask a Holt Renfrew employee for directions after wandering about for a couple of minutes. The cream buns were individually wrapped and packaged in a cute carrying bag. Taste wise, I was a little caught off guard by the sweetness of the bun. It ultimately overshadowed the filling flavours, notably the matcha and "Apple of my Eye". I personally enjoy a stronger matcha intensity, I think but if you like lighter notes, this is definitely for you. The "Silky Milk Tea" filling was the best one out of the batch. I would most likely order again when I return to try the other cream flavours and the melon pan buns! read more

Somewhere along the line, buns started costing $4 each. These are not your 4 for $1 Ding Dong buns though (nothing against those, those will forever be my go to) but this is a different age. This is the age where a good doughnut runs $5 each, and these filled buns are nothing if not tasty doughnut like desserts. Each calorie filled bite is a little bit of fluffy gooey heaven. I've been invited to try their new flavors. I'm going to post a review of the ones I've tried so far: Custard: This OG cream bun is hands down my favourite. The buns are nice and soft like all the other cream buns at Hattendo, and the custard is just the right amount of sweetness. Whipped cream bun: The combination of custard and whipped cream is amazing. It's really hard to choose if I like this or the custard one more. Crunchy Apple cream bun: The cream has a custard/apple jam kind of favour with some subtle crunchy bits inside. Fruity cream buns are not for me but I can see some people liking it. Milk Tea cream bun: It has a subtle yet distinct milk tea flavour to it which I enjoyed quite a bit. Probably my 3rd favourote cream bun after custard and whipped cream. Azuki (Red Bean) cream bun: This one is a tie between the milk tea bun. I like how well they make it since red beans tend to make the texture thicker but their cream bun still has that nice, creamy texture. Matcha cream bun: I love matcha and while this one was good, I do love it when it's the taste is stronger and more bitter so I probably won't order this one again. Chocolate cream bun: I can see kids loving this but personally, I'd like it if it was darker and more bitter. Almond Tofu: I was very excited to try this since I LOVE almond tofu but this one was a bit of a let down. Texture is great and the taste is good, but it wasn't the flavor I was looking for in an almond tofu. But if you like creamy pudding, you would like this a lot. Egg salad: It's really good with the right amount of creaminess. Overall, while I do find the buns really good, it is a bit too pricey imo so it's not something I would get that often. But when I want some solid cream buns, I would definitely go to Hattendo. read more

I remember visiting this place before but at a different location. Their egg sandwhich looks very tempting but I think I got a dessert. This location is a bit difficult to find at first, you have to go to the lower level which is along the path. Already tried the cream buns at the other downtown location a while ago and never been back. Was in the area of the new location so came for the grand opening free bun and ended up getting a few new flavour ones to take advantage of the 20% off special. Even with 20% discount, the buns are too expensive for what it is. A coworker said the free custard bun was good but would never pay for one. The chestnut was very subtle, possibly too subtle as there was not much chestnut flavour. The houjicha similar to the matcha one, has a strong tea scent. The cream is mildly sweet and not heavy. Consensus was delicious cream, but the bun was definitely a rip off. Tried the caramel pudding and that was great. Served in a small glass bottle, that was very cute. The bottom caramel was sweet which paired very well with the smooth creamy pudding. A bit on the pricier as well but better than the buns. Overall, probably a no if required to pay for it personally. read more

Let me get this out of the way. It seems discriminatory, deceptive and racist to me that these Japan-based businesses are brought to Canada (sometimes directly and sometimes via a Chinese/Korean businessman) and they (mostly) hire East Asian employees that are not Japanese. Why focus on hiring Chinese, Thai, Filipino and such exclusively when these employee know as much about Japanese cooking and culture as anybody else? Are we supposed to associate these employees with an authentic Japanese workstaff? These businesses go out of their way to emphasize their Japanese credentials so they obviously care that the Canadian customer base deems them as true to Japan. Pablo is a business that had a presence in Japan and had no Japanese employees here. I said "had" because they are kaput and gone for now. Uncle Tetsu is a non-existent business in Japan that is essentially a Canadian entity. They too have no Japanese employees. Santouka is the most authentic of the bunch with a presence in Japan, Japanese management here and Japanese employees. Tsujiri falls somewhere between these two situations. Then there are all the fake sushi and izakaya places run by Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean-Canadians. Korean-Canadian owned Kinton is the most self conscious of the bunch striving to hire Japanese chefs and employees. Hopefully this background helps people choose and perceive context because my reviews are not Bento Box magazine or Blogto where everything and anything is salt of the earth. A review is supposed to help readers decide and not be all about 100% uniform praise of everything (a potential advertiser sells). My first time at Hattendo was yesterday. The Chinese employee was nice enough and explained that they have been here for a year. I was actually walking by trying to get to the Holt cafe and found them next door. They are located in the basement pathway. Hattendo specialize in sweet buns and also have sandwiches and a modicum of pastry. The menu list in Japan is wider and has a selection of breads and more sandwiches. Being my first time, I picked up a cream (custard) bun, a chocolate bun and a custard caramel pudding. I had high hopes as this is a bona fide Japanese business with Japanese recipes (as opposed to someone like Hazukido, which is a Taiwanese "Japanese style" business). To be clear Japanese pastry and much of its food is copied from and inspired by Western cooking and baking. In fact, Japan does not even have a tradition of baking. Of my picks I am most excited about the pudding. It came in a nifty little jar (net weight: omitted i.e.blank) with a plastic spoon attached. The simple list of ingredients was desirable and contained no chemicals and artificial items and sugar was last (smallest amount) on the list. The pudding was delicious and felt both rich and refreshing. The custard and chocolate buns were both good and bad. The buns were light, but the best way to describe them is as being akin to a hotdog bun. That is exactly what they taste like. The custard and chocolate fillings were oozing out and quite tasty. One can taste the quality in them. These three items cost me $14. Coincidentally, I had them exactly as the business recommends me to have them and I was not even trying. They were bought by me and brought out to eat as I sat on the seats outside at Bay & Bloor. Hattendo recommends their products be chilled and then consumed after 15 minutes of being in room temperature. The Japanese wrapping speaks to the almost 100-year legacy of the business and its origins in Mihara, Hiroshima on the inland coast of Western Japan.
