I went to lunch here with my team from work today so that we could welcome the new guy. Cheddars was his choice and my manager was paying! Not a bad way to start off my Monday. Today was my first visit, I had driven past on my way to Pei Wei or the Alamo Drafthouse. I never checked it out because being a single gal in my late 20s with no kids, Cheddars didn't really seem like my scene and to be honest it is not. I had a buffalo chicken wrap with fries which is enormous. I was super full after eating half. I brought the rest home for dinner...score I got free lunch and dinner! My manager was happy too since everything we ate was 6-8 bucks per person. Cheddars is a family friendly restaurant with good cheap food...I will probably be back in my next life as a soccer mom. read more

Some people need to review places like Cheddar's for what they are -- A CHAIN AMERICAN RESTAURANT. Look, if you're planning to take your V-day date here or impress the girl you met online and meeting for the first time or you're about to pop the question to your girlfriend, don't do it here. Cheddar's really is a carbon-copy of Chili's, Applebee's, etc. However, what makes Cheddar's really shine is it's serving size, price, and appetizers. Pros: 1) Appetizers are delicious. The onion rings are cooked to perfection and comes in a ginormous serving for 3.99. Spinach dip is a staple for also 3.99. Texas cheese fries, chicken fingers, queso, quesadillas, and nachos round out this all-star team of appetizers. 2) Everything on the menu will fill you up. Some of the dishes can get really flavorful and salty so make sure if you're not a fan of that to ask for light flavoring. Burgers, sandwiches, steaks all taste great. 3) Free and fast refills on all non-alchy drinks. Cons: I never have room for the dessert menu when I eat here. Recommendations: Chicken strips are cooked to perfection. Steaks are priced way below their taste value. Broccoli cheese casserole is a side dish I never leave without. If you had to pick between Chili's or Applebee's, do your stomache and your wallet a favor and pick Cheddar's every time. (The address and location on the map here is incorrect!) Damn you, Yelp -- it's all your fault! After the closure of all the Bennigan's in Austin, I had finally resigned myself to living the rest of my life without my beloved Monte Cristo sandwiches. And then, I accidentally stumbled onto a discussion on Yelp about Monte Cristos in Austin, in which I discovered that Cheddar's has them, and apparently done pretty well. So the other day when my wife said, "I miss Bennigan's. I want a Monte Cristo," I was able to offer Cheddar's as a suggestion. We had great service from our waiter. My wife asked him if they had any horseradish sauce, to which he replied that they had cocktail sauce with horseradish in it, but not any horseradish sauce. So we were planning to do without, but when he brought our mail, he brought us some sauce that they use as a dipping sauce for their onion rings that has a little bit of horseradish in it. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal, but so often people who don't really know for sure, once you say you're OK without something like this, they just drop it. I really appreciated that he took the effort to check and get us what we wanted. And the Monte Cristo? Perfect. PER-FECT. After we had eaten, the manager stopped by our table and asked us how everything was -- always a nice touch. We bumped into him again on our way out and had a nice visit with him about the beautiful aquarium they have between the bar and restaurant. I may never order anything else there, but you can expect to see me at Cheddars at least a few times a year to satisfy my Monte Cristo craving. read more

This isn't my first time here but this is the first review that I'm making. Me and my two friends were here just for drinks and we had dinner at a restaurant before here but of course the staff didn't know that. We had a pain killer which was a two drink minimum and we had the top shelf margarita which is another really strong drink and because we didn't order food the manager came Monique came over and said she'll order us croissants on the house just to make sure we were able to drive home. I thought that was very smart and responsible although we already ate before but it shows that they really care about their customers and I for one admired that and I will come here again and again because I felt important. Ok, I thought maybe our waiter was having a bad day or we were just a little picky because we were sorta thrashed after an epic night out last night, but after reading the reviews, maybe it wasn't just us. I've never been to a Cheddars before (never lived anywhere that had them before Austin), and I've always wanted to try it. I mean, cheddar cheese is awesome. So perhaps, a restaurant named Cheddars would be too. Not so much, unfortunately. The two stars are for the price (definitely cheaper than average for the type of fare they had, which is a bonus), and the actual food itself. We got the triple appetizer thing and it was pretty yummy, they have pretty delicious chicken strips, but no salsa with the nachos? WTF? To balance out the fried food, I had a side salad and half club sandwich, which was nothing special, but hit the spot. My dining companions had mixed reviews - one ordered the grilled fish plate with mango salsa and was impressed (I had a bite of it and I was too!) and the other had steak and shrimp and said the only thing he really liked on his plate was the broccoli cheese casserole. Lots of variety on the menu, and I appreciated a few healthy options in there! Now, the bad. The green beans were apparently terrible. One person with me is totally famous for eating everything - he only ate half. My fiance had one bite and then left them. But most of all, the service was totally sub par. It takes a LOT for me to even care about service in considering a place to eat. There are three levels for me. Either it is SO standout spectacular that I remember it fondly, it passes by without anything memorable (so, completely adequate), or, like today, when we just kept complaining to each other how ridiculous things were. I don't even think it was our waiters fault. He was running around like crazy trying to take care of what seemed like way too many big, needy parties, but they just kept piling them on him. He took forever to get us pretty much everything we asked for. My fiance asked for red beans and rice and when the food came out, they were absent. After we let the waiter know, he came out with, 10 minutes later, a dish of green beans. At that point, he was pretty full so he didn't even send it back, but seriously? Hire a few more waiters so they can actually give good customer service. I could tell the guy was trying, he was just WAY too busy. The verdict? I'd go back if someone else suggested it, and try to go during an off peak time - not right around noon. read more

Good food, but you'll need a hearing check after dining in. I asked my husband to write this up because I was too busy trying to get the taste of their supposed chicken caesar salad out of my mouth. My wife and I recently had lunch at Cheddars. The kids were both at school and we thought it would be nice to get out of the house and chat over a meal. We'd eaten at Cheddar's a few years before, but for one reason or another had not gone back. I think now we remember why. The inside of Cheddar's is a cavernous space with high ceilings and very few dividing walls. Add in a lot of closely packed tables and you get a lot of noise. We enjoyed out lunch quietly. By that I mean that it wasn't worth screaming across the table to each other in order to be heard. The experience was much more akin to an elementary cafeteria than a restaurant. Too bad the food wasn't much better. Maybe we'll try it again after a night-time movie when there is guaranteed to be fewer people and another chef. Ok, so Cheddar's isn't a 5 star restaurant, but I am giving it that because I can't give it a 4.5, and I can't stand to see this Cheddar's sitting at a 3. We've been coming here for two years, pretty consistently, mostly because the whole family has a signature dish here that they just love. Is it highly original? No. Are the flavors complex and unique? No. Is it the best I've ever had? No. So why do I love Cheddars? Because there are so MANY different things that really fall into the category of comfort food for me here! We always start off the meal with a queso con carne & chips. I often split the mango tilapia with my husband because otherwise we have SO much food left over. The portions here are huge here no matter what you get! My oldest daughter loves the New Orleans pasta. Sometimes hub opts for something different so I split the vegetable plate with my youngest daughter and we snack on fresh salads, Broccoli & Cheese casserole, corn, baked potatoes and other goodies. I love a restaurant where the sides are so good, they give you an option to just have sides! Plus, these salads are really fresh! Not Jason's Deli, but definitely good. We usually eat here for supper on a weeknight, so we don't have drinks very often, but when we do they are pretty unique! The Cheddar's painkiller is insane! It's definitely my favorite. The pina coladas here are beautiful, but I really can't recommend them because they are just TOO TOO sweet, especially with the toasted coconut around the rim. Another wonderful thing here is the flavored teas. I've had them at other places and they have a fake flavor. Here, the flavor is very fresh, and each one comes with a pretty large slice of orange on the rim to boot. I used to enjoy the atmosphere at Bennigans, but I think the atmosphere at Cheddar's is much nicer. Not upscale by any means, but very comfortable. Kids love the aquarium and I always love to sit where I can stare at the huge fan and ceiling atrium. Sure, the atmosphere isn't 5 star, but it's not shabby by ANY means. It can get a bit loud, but that's because it is ALWAYS full. I've never been to Cheddar's when the restaurant was anything less than half full. This in and of itself should tell you something about the place. A word of caution. If you loved the Bennigans Monte Cristo, you will be a bit disappointed with Cheddars. I found mine to be a bit more "bready" and just not as excellent as Bennigans' was. I'll still keep looking for a better MC. This one is ok, but there is so much on the menu that I love that I probably won't ever have another MC here. Finally, I want to address service. Maybe it is because we are regulars here, but I have NEVER had a bad service experience here. There have been a couple of times we have waited on our food for a minute (it seemed to be back in the earlier days) but I am a really fast tea drinker, and I've never had an empty glass here. Of course, we haven't gone on a weekend or during an insanely busy time, so that may have a bearing on things as well... Overall, the individual parts of Cheddars - the atmosphere, the service, the appetizers and beverages, the food - are not going to blow you away. But when you combine the sum of the quality of all these individual parts together PLUS the fact that the prices are highly reasonable, I dare you to find a better value for your money out there. There may be better places to go out on a date or for a special occasion, but Cheddars is a solid place for people who eat out regularly. read more

Well I have plenty of negative things to say about this stupid place and their AWFUL service. When I was 18 and 4 months pregnant a friend and I went to Cheddars for a small meal. I had ordered an orange juice and when I took a drink from it it had alcohol in it! Our waiter was trying to impress me by throwing in some vodka. I was so suprised and called him over and asked, "does this have vodka in it?!" He smirked and said, "maaaaaybe." I was furious and told him I was pregnant, what an immature jerk! Then later when my friend and I were leaving, she tripped off the platform that our table was on and fell right on her face and dropped her togo box. This dumb waiter just stood there and laughed while I helped her up along with another customer. uh! I had a very ugly waitress one time with a BIG MOLE on her nose be SO rude to me when I went and ate by myself and NEVER apologized for anything. I wrote on the back of her ticket ways to improve her service or lack there of. ...and I love how not even ten minutes after you start eating your food they drop the check totally hinting to you that it's almost the end of their shift. I trully hate this stupid place and will NEVER go back there again!! read more

Always packed. I haven't been here in years. We walked in right at the end of a dinner rush. We were sat promptly but it seemed like it took forever to get our food. The good was great and worth the wait. Our server was also very attentive. What I love most about this place are the prices. I avoid chain restaurants, but hubby and I found ourselves at a Cheddar's last weekend in Tyler because nothing else was open. Last night, considering dinner options NOT downtown or near campus, we decided to try Cheddar's again. Meal for two with appetizer and three drinks under $60?? What-what!? Blackened Salmon was perfect, especially with a little bit of the edemame dipping sauce poured over it. Hubby's chicken salad was all gone by the end of the meal. The wine, not overpriced, arrived poured heavy in gigantic glasses. Waitstaff very friendly and quick. We were seated immediately, despite it being 7pm on a Friday. Next time I will try a specialty cocktail. We will certainly go again. read more

Update MINUS 2 STARS: My experience on Friday 6/23 First, I was sat at a table that was dirty. I didnt notice until my hands and elbows got very sticky. Then I told the waiter to wipe off the table and a girl came over with cleaner and spritz the table (and it kind of got on me). I cannot believe she did not ask us to get up. Then I went into the restroom and none of the paper towel machines worked. Thirdly, my food was served luke warm. OHH and my croissant was served without honey butter again. I am from Houston and was visiting Austin for my birthday. I go to the Cheddars in Houston maybe 4 times a year. I am a server and I am very understanding. Shifts are long and it's hard to stay clean. Our server looked like she worked in a coal factory. I'm guessing she washed her WHITE shirt and tie with her BLACK pants. Her button down shirt was completely untucked in the front. Her whole appearance looked dirty. Holes in her shoes so big you could see her bright blue socks. I ordered the honey butter croissants because they are my favorite! The honey button wasn't melted just had lines across the top. FAIL. Then, to top it off. An employee that was off her shift comes in with ice cream. Her and the bartender are eating it like it's nothing, like guests aren't there. Then our server goes over and eats it too. Not something I want to see. As far as the server goes. It's not her fault and she shouldn't be the one in trouble. The manager of the shift should be GONE! Who would let someone work like that and let's the staff eat in front of the guests? read more

This place seems to have a wait no matter at what time you go, but it never seems to take long to get seated. We went with the in laws and went to get a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. My mother in law and I both ordered a frozen bellini and as I watched the bartender make them, he put in ONE shot of alcohol and proceeded to pour 4 drinks out of that one blender. No wonder the drinks there taste like they are alcohol-free...they practically are. Don't waste your money on alcoholic drinks here!! It was awhile back, so I don't remember what everyone got, but I got the tortilla soup, which is tomato-heavy, but really good. The waitress even let me try a little dish of it before ordering. Okay, so this is your run of the mill American-ish food restaurant. Here is the deal. The food is good, its not 5 star magnificent, but its good. For the price that it is though, its amazing. Its like a dollar more than frigging Bill Miller for a chicken fried steak. Also, the service - AMAZING. We frequent this place for lunch and we've had at least 5 different waiters. They've always been good and are often perfect/amazing waiters. This place is very nice looking inside and would great for a cheap date as well! FYI - I'm ROUGH on the the tips - If you're service sucked you get NOTHING and I'll complain to the manager and if its amazing I'll double the bill in tip and even let the manager know you were great. OK, let me start with this...I LOVE Cheddars in P'ville!!! This one is 6 blocks from my house and not to mess with a good thing I have always driven to the one I KNOW if AWESOME!!! That being said...here we go... We arrived and had a very short 10 minute wait, the hostess was polite and very bouncy with her bubbly personality. We got seated fairly quickly and before even getting situated our waiter popped up and asked about drinks. He asked in a hurry, seemed annoyed and impatient we didn't know what we wanted and we felt rushed to make a decision. We settled on a DrP for me and a tea for my boyfriend. My FAVORITE side at this chain has always been the broccoli cheese cassarole, alas they were out...UGH!!! We ordered our food and if you blinked you may have missed our waiter fly by grab our empty glasses and drop new ones without a word or glance in our direction. This happened a few times which was sad because at one point I wanted water and possibly a margarita but the waiter was never there long enough to talk to. The food came, the portions are pretty small for the price.... He ordered the Tilapia with shrimp and mango salsa....he says it was very very good and tasty! I ordered the grilled chicken with shrimp and a side of ranch (for my steamed broccoli)....chicken was about the size of a child's palm (very dry) and the flavorless fishy tasting shrimp....well lets say it all got coated in ranch just for flavor. His shrimp was spicy and flavorful....mine bland and icky!!! The waiter litterally dropped our plates and took off not even time to ask if we needed anything (he forgot my ranch) so we had to wait and litterally grab at his arm to get him back to our table. Then OMG GET THIS....he had to actually WARN us to be careful of glass in our drinks because someone dropped dishes near the food, drinks, and ice....WTF?!? After very carefully eating and drinking our food....never to see our waiter again durring this process...my boyfriend went to the bathroom... I thought places this busy had a designated cleaner for bathrooms....NOOOOO....he wanted to leave right after entering the bathroom....said there was CRAP (litterally) on the seats pee all over the toilet and floor around it, and it was so dirty that he felt sick to his stomach so he didn't even get to go...that is groos!!! The waiter dropped our ticket off and said to pay him when ready....well for once he was easy to get a hold of....then again I was giving him money and freeing up a table in his section....so go figure!!! When asking the hostess upon leaving if the two restaurants were connected I got the dumb blonde ditzy act like she didnt know what I was talking about and claimed the manager was to busy to talk to me...I assured her we wouldnt be back to the very convieniet location walking distance from my house but rather drive for the better service and food. She smiled and went "he he uh huh...ok have a good night now and thank you for dining with us...hope it was yummy..he he" Really, not sure if that was her idea of a funny smartass or if she was just that ditzy but bad just doesn't cover the experience we had!!! read more

Being a non-Southerner, I did not know this was a chain (we do not have them up north). I have visited this location twice and each time has been exceptional. The first time I went we ordered an appetizer, the homemade onion rings. They are HUGE more like onion bracelets and they were tasty. I would definitely recommend them. For my meal since I am a burger and margarita fanatic, I had to try the burger and the margarita (separate, of course, but equal). I had the smokehouse burger and it was the best! The meat melted in my mouth and the bun was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better burger. I felt like I was in heaven. I also ordered a side salad (I happen to like salad and not just because people claim its healthy). It came with a honey butter croissant. This was the 2nd best part of my meal. This was sooo soft and it just floated in my mouth while I ate it. It was amazing. Nevertheless, the 2nd time I went, I ordered a few extras. Now to the margarita. I was impressed because it was only $3.50 and it is a very good size. I love the fact that I can get a swirl or regular and it is the same price. The margarita was very tasty (frozen) and that is what made me want to go back a 2nd time. The service is decent. We ate dinner here and had a fantastic experience! We have not been to cheddars in over a year because, to be honest, our food was always messed up, cold, undercooked or overcooked. But that was not the case last night. The food was hot, delicious and our server Roberto did a great job. We went in closer to close, around 10:15pm. We ordered queso as an appetizer (you must add the beef, it's amazing!), my boyfriend had steak/fried shrimp and I had the steak/ribs combo. My dad used to be a chef so I am spoiled with his ribs, but the ribs at cheddar were so yummy and fell off the bone. They have definitely redeemed themselves and we will for sure be back very soon!! read more

Anyone who knows me, can attest to how fair I am in rating service, and rewardinIf I could give NO STAR, I would! Each time I have been here over the last year, service has gotten progressively worse. TONIGHT, however, was the incident that pushed me to the point of no return. With a large group for dinner, took 1 hr to be seated, 1 hr for food, and literally until close, now 11pm, for them to wrap up. Not to mention that the waitress spilled an entire glass of water on the table, and me! Oh, and didn't bother to come back to clean it up!! So yes, I will no longer dine at ANY of the CHEDDARS establishments! And I will RECOMMEND that you avoid this place like the plague, especially this Research Blvd location. read more

Love this restaurant, but our waiter needs more training... Phillip was very nice, but very disorganized. Had to be asked 3 times for refills that only happened once, he wasn't familiar with a number of things on the menu, he brought us a drink that wasn't ours, and we had quite a wait to get our check... In all honesty, he almost didn't get a tip at all, but only because there was no pen to sign the check with! Either retrain this young man, or put him in a section with fewer tables. read more

This is a typical American Diner from the outside. However the cuisine is what stands out. They make many of the items from scratch. The typical Diner stance is inexpensive and quick, which usually leads to highly processed foods. But not here. Even the Chicken pot pie is homemade and it's delicious. There are several diner style items on the menu but you will be surprised at the home made freshness they provide. I'll return again for that craving of "comfort food" :) Great job. read more

On 7/13/2018 Waiter stole from family and I! My family and I went to Cheddar's for my daughter's 11th birthday and the server was horrible. The server never brought all our food but also stole 20.00 from us by forging a tip on the receipt After we left tip on the table. After contacting Cheddar's they will refund the tip the person stole. My receipt shows server name to be Anthony W. Cheddar's handling the situation but I'm still pissed off. We went for lunch today. We ordered the cheese dips for an appetizer and they were so SALTY. Sister had a burger and it was so-so. I ordered the vegetable platter I chose broccoli rice casserole, corn, green beans and potato. The broccoli and corn were yummy. The potato was cold and green beans were nasty. I was going to send them back but never saw our waiter again. When he finally showed back up he starts to tell me to use the kiosk to check out. I told him no I was paying with cash. This is the only place in Austin that I know of which serves the Monte Christo, a deep fried battered turkey, ham and cheese sandwich with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. It is gooey heaven and with the homemade raspberry jam to compliment the deep fried taste really brings my tongue to ecstasy. I know Cheddars is a chain, but this one serves a unique tasty dish that is hard to replicate. read more
