Hit up Charmaine's for some drinks after seeing Hell's Kitchen at the Orpheum (the show was absolutely amazing, by the way). We didn't have a reservation but lucked out and got seated right away at a beautiful spot on the rooftop. ​The atmosphere and the drinks were great, but the food was a major letdown--mostly because it was just incredibly annoying to eat. ​We ordered the deviled eggs, zucchini strips, fries, and a cheese board. For a rooftop lounge, they really need to rethink their menu mechanics: ​Deviled eggs: Way, way too salty. ​Zucchini strips: Cut way too big. You literally need a fork and knife just to eat them. ​Cheese and meat board: Came out without a cheese knife, which made trying to share and eat it an absolute mess. ​When you're out having drinks on a roof, you shouldn't have to struggle with your food. They need to stick to actual finger foods, canapés, or anything on a skewer or toothpick. ​Great spot for a drink and the view, but definitely eat somewhere else first. read more

If you're coming here for the views of downtown San Francisco, you'll absolutely get them stunning, no notes there. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting or the price point. We started with the fries, which were actually great simple, crispy, and flavorful. That ended up being one of the highlights. We then ordered deviled eggs, and our server suggested adding caviar. Since not everyone in our group enjoys caviar, I asked if we could split the order four with caviar and two without, based on his note that the dish came with six. He said that would be fine, but what arrived was just four halves with caviar and nothing else. We didn't push it, but it was definitely off from what was communicated. The charcuterie board was solid nothing overly memorable, but a good, simple snack. Things started to fall off a bit more with the mains. The prime rib sliders, which were recommended to us, were mostly bread with very little meat and quite greasy. We were told they'd be perfect for three people, but they didn't really deliver. The chicken skewers had a similar issue we were told there would be four pieces, but only three came out. Again, not the end of the world, but it was the second time quantities were off, which started to feel like a pattern. Overall, the food was just... okay. Nothing terrible, but nothing that stood out or justified the pricing. The experience is really carried by the atmosphere. Service-wise, the staff was friendly and accommodating they even offer blankets if it gets chilly, which is a nice touch. One thing to note: parking. We opted for valet at the hotel for convenience, but it came out to $61 after fees, which added to the already pricey night. Totally on us, but worth planning ahead if you go. I had also been here once before for brunch (paella), and even then, it was pretty average. I brought friends this time hoping for a better experience for their last night in the U.S., but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. Celebrated a friend's birthday at Charmaine's Rooftop Bar & Lounge before the Michael Jackson show. No denying it - beautiful space. Rooftop views, great vibe, all the things. I actually hate writing reviews, but this one didn't sit well. $325 for four people, four glasses of juice mixed with sparkling water or lemonade, one cocktail, and a few bites of mediocre-at-best food. But I don't drink, so I'm there for the food... and apparently $20 mocktails. Which, to be clear, is just $20 juice in a fancy glass. Strong start. Zucchini planks were actually great. But paying that price for essentially one zucchini feels bold. The $24 artichoke? Rock hard, chewy, borderline inedible. Powered through it purely for fiber at that point. Fries with a $10 truffle upcharge... where? Maybe a few flecks showed up. They were also lukewarm, likely sitting while we waited on the steak. Speaking of - the bavette came out looking beautiful, plated with tomatoes, greens, mushrooms, and blue cheese. At first glance it felt like a composed, generous dish. But the steak itself was super chewy, overcooked, and honestly bite-sized. It felt like it was mixed in with the mushrooms to make it appear like more than it was. Not worth the price. Deviled eggs ended up being one of the better bites, which says a lot considering I don't even like hard boiled eggs. Prime rib sliders were the standout. Genuinely delicious. Company was great. Views were great. Atmosphere delivered. But from a food standpoint? Not worth the price. This feels like a place where drinks carry the experience and the food just tags along. Interior was equally gorgeous, and my favorite part was the richly appointed corridor to the restrooms. The crowd and vibe is swanky posh, with sultry lounge music playing overhead. I sipped on the Mr Mistofeles, which was an excellent and creative variation on a Manhattan with green chartreuse as the star addition! The one star deduction was for the slow service, but which was friendly and helpful nonetheless with Joel's expert recommendations. I did not partake in the food, but the deviled eggs looked interesting. I would recommend enjoying the scene on a more manageable weekday evening, as I have a feeling the weekends would get chaotic here. We had to pay for a reservation, which was disappointing, and the food was very expensive for the small portion sizes. The drinks were also overpriced for what you get. Parking is difficult, and the restaurant is located in the Tenderloin, which isn't the nicest or safest area, especially if you're visiting at night. There's a nice rooftop bar at the top of the Proper Hotel. The problem is that the hotel is on the corner of Market and 7th Street, the heart of the challenging mid-Market area. I've known this intersection for years, and believe it or not, it's not in its worst state now. Cadres of addicts and dealers used to congregate in large numbers, but the numbers have decreased recently. Knock wood. Even so, I was still on my guard when I arrived for Happy Hour. The hotel was smart to restrict entry on the McAllister side since most of the distressing behavior is on the Market side. When I entered the quietly stylish lobby, I was initially confused where to go, but the doorman guided me to a secure elevator which took me directly to the roof. It looked like a corporate event was taking place because everyone was in suits. Still able to slither my way through the crowd to enjoy the views, I was surprised how serene Market and 7th looked from 120 feet above. The bar was surprisingly empty, so I sat myself down in front of a cordial bartender and had a particularly smooth $20 Espresso Martini (Photo 9). I decided to treat myself to a $6 Smoked Salmon Deviled Egg enhanced by seaweed, sesame, and chile salt (Photo 10). It matched well with the martini. Everyone was super nice but the food was all fried. We tried asking for some things on the side but it didn't work all too well. I really wanted to love Charmaine's, but the menu felt overwhelmingly unhealthy. Nearly every dish we ordered from the fish tacos (which they could have grilled for us), and the white chips for the poke were stale, the normal chips were oily, and lacking balance. After a few bites, everything started to taste the same and the flavors just missed the mark. I was hoping for more fresh or lighter options to break things up. My friends and I have eaten here twice now ahead of Broadway shows at the Orpheum theater. The view is gorgeous and the food/drinks are solid. At our most recent visit, I ate the chickpea dip (aka fancy hummus) which was flawlessly smooth and creamy. I ordered a side of veggies to eat it with, since it only came with potato chips, which, although delicious, are a bit odd to eat with hummus IMO. The crisp veggies were excellent with the creamy dreamy hummus. Both my friends enjoyed their orders of pork belly lettuce wraps, along with their drinks (Crookshanks and Spotted Civet). On our previous visit, I ordered the sweet potato quesadilla which was fine. There's a sauce of some kind in it that wasn't my favorite. But it wasn't bad. read more

Everything about my Charmaine's experience was fine. I don't have complaints, though I expected this to feel like more of an elevated experience than it was. True rating: 3.5/5. I popped by around 6pm and, as a guest at the hotel, was seated within a few minutes. That experience alone was great, and all of the staff, hosts, servers, and others at the restaurant who I interacted with were considerate. I had the option to sit at a fireplace table outside or high top inside. I get cold easily so wasn't planing on sitting outside, but the fireplace swayed me. Note for others: the fire is more for ambiance than warmth. I ordered a glass of wine, the poke with rice crackers, and the octopus skewers (at my waitress's recommendation) and they were all quite tasty! The seafood was fresh, the flavors were well balanced, and I enjoyed my meal. I did not, however, expect to spend $85. I don't usually order alcohol when I eat out, so perhaps that contributed to some of the sticker shock. We reserved outdoor seating (note: $10 deposit per person required on weekends), and although we were both in skirts and it was a chilly SF night, the fire pits gave off enough heat that we didn't even need our jackets. The rooftop views are gorgeous, and as someone who appreciates interior design, I loved the intentional aesthetic - everything from the furniture to the lighting felt curated and Instagram-worthy. Our total came to $213 for three dishes and four drinks. While pricey for light bites, the overall experience, ambiance, and service made it make a little more sense. I'd like to return for their Sunday paella brunch on a sunnier day. I would imagine the ambience would be more of a vibe; it was a bit quiet when we went. Verdict: Gorgeous decor and good to check out at least once and enjoy the views, but I feel it was too overpriced. I would try other rooftop bars before coming back here. read more

Atmosphere The appeal here is definitely the views. The interior and exterior are both well done--cute little tables with fireplaces scattered in an L-shape around the inside. The interior has a warm parlor vibe with the bar to the right of the elevators, plus some indoor seating on both sides. Food The food menu is very limited and hasn't changed since last year. Deviled Eggs: Delicious. Lemongrass Chicken Wings: Not the best. Guac + Chips: (Yes, we're basic.) The chips are so good--super salty and crisp. Guac is fine, comes with pico. Large Bites / Entrées Guajillo Carne Tacos: My husband loved these open-face tacos, minus the pickled jalapeño (or whatever the garnish was). Bossam: Basically pork belly open-face tacos--these were good. If you're truly hungry, eat somewhere else first. The menu is about five appetizers/spreads, some "sticks," and five entrée options--mostly snack-style items like sliders or tacos. Desserts are uninspired--skip them. They did bring our dog some bacon, which was a nice touch. Drinks The cocktail list hasn't changed either. It's mostly spins on classic cocktails, all named after cats or fictional cat characters (except for an "Afternoon Spritz," which feels thrown in). The branding is cute, though. Came here for Valentine's Day they only had a special menu for food which only included oysters, caviar, prime, rib, sliders, and french fries some people don't eat beef or pork, which happened to be the case for my significant other. We went to the hotel first, not realizing there was a different entrance outside of the hotel for Charmaine's. My husband and I came here to pre-game before our steak dinner. We had reservations for 5:30 PM on a Thursday. There was only one other couple on the rooftop at that time who turned out to be friends we hadn't seen in 10 years because they moved out of the area. They were in town for the weekend to celebrate their anniversary. After getting re-acquainted, we asked the server to take our picture. Since we were having dinner elsewhere, we just had a few cocktails and shared bar bites. The Grilled Japanese Chicken Meatball and Pork Belly skewers were juicy with really good flavor. Both were light and accompanied our drinks well. The Proper Cup, Mr. Mistoffelees, and Mr. Bigglesworth were nice cocktails. At about 6:30, the place got busier. Unlimited paella with a beautiful view of SF -- what's not to like? Came here right at opening for their Sunday paella special, which you need to reserve and pay for in advance. We were seated inside in an area with a beautiful couch setup around a table, which was beautiful in theory but honestly was a little inconvenient to eat in. The paella was already cooking when we came in, so we went right for our first plates as soon as we got inside. The seafood paella is the largest portion being cooked, but there's also a smaller vegetable paella available. The chef was super friendly and always ready to serve a new plate quickly! There's some condiments (hot sauce, etc.) available for you to add. Overall, I like the paella. Not the most authentic but great flavors. I tried the vegetarian paella as well, but I think the flavors missed the mark for me as it was a little too plain. It was fun to sit there with friends and catch up with unlimited food and great views. The experience was a bit pricey and the drinks were expensive even by SF standards, so I might come back here only for special occasions. A great experience though! read more

We had a double date here on a Saturday night around 7 pm. From what we heard, it's more guaranteed to have a spot if you reserve a table online first. Keep in mind, when you reserve online it's $5 for each person. The price itself isn't too bad, but if you cancel or some people in your party are a no-show it's non refundable. A good thing reserving was that we were trying to add an additional 9 people at one point (I know it's a lot), and they were still trying to accommodate the best they can. I've had an experience or two were getting onto the rooftop is a pain because sometimes it's attached a hotel and it'll stop on other floors, but this is a building on its own so waiting for the elevator wasn't an issue at all. The seating itself is very casual. There were lots of couches and small tables that are meant for lounging. The food menu is very very small, so come with an open mind that it's mainly for the drinks. I had the brut wine while my bf got a cocktail and my friends got a dirty martini and espresso martini. All the drinks were great, and the service was good and they always checked up on us. Our table was a little sad because they assumed we were done eating...and took our plate with one wing left without asking. If you do want something from the menu: pork belly skewers were amazing! Parking is definitely hard especially being so close to union square. The area itself (if you're from the area you know) is pretty sketchy. The first time I visited, I'd rate it a 4.5 overall, including drinks, service, snacks, and ambiance. On my second visit, it was very windy, so we sat inside on the cozy couch. We ordered some snacks, but they were disappointing. The Japanese chicken skewers and pork sausages were overly salty--even for bar food. I wasn't expecting much, but it was enough to lower my rating. Parking in the area is difficult--you can only valet for $48, but at least it keeps you safe in the Civic Center area at night. This is purely based on service. The drinks were fine and the setting was nice. I paid ~$65 (not including undeserved tip) for an Old Fashioned and a double rye. I'd drunk about 3/4 of my rye and they had just refilled my water glass. I figured I'll pay the bill and finish my rye and water, which seems normal I would think... After I paid using their tablet, I went to finish my drink and POOF! It was gone. While I was paying they bussed my very unfinished drink. I complained, but they did not give a F. It was "We've overcharged you, took away your unfinished drink, now GTFO." read more
