This was my first ever tasting menu. My husband has been asking me for 14 years to do something like this, and on our 10 year anniversary we said "WHY NOT". Although I dont eat ANY fish, I have been trying to keep my mind open. So, I knew that there would be fish on the menu. Well, there was and I ATE EVERY BITE. I have been trying new things and I knew what to expect. Each course was extremely delicious. The waiter would explain all the ingredients in each course. We had everything from lobster, fish, duck, beef, crab. The ambiance was amazing as well. There was a piano player softly playing in the background. Charleston Grill is always such a pleasant experience. My fiance and I went here for our first date as well as our last anniversary. I wasn't sure what kind of drink I wanted so the bartender made up one for me, it was so nice. For our meals I had the fish a la plancha and it was delicious. The risotto was seasoned to perfection. My fiance had the steak and he enjoyed that as well. For dessert we had the cigar and OMG it was 1) so fun and cute 2) it was the most delicious dessert I have had. The atmosphere is plush and luxe. Low-lit and cozy yet lively with bustling waitstaff and patrons. The dining experience itself was a stellar 5-star thanks to Andrew! He made the night unforgettable. The hibiscus flower ice cube in the Across the Pond added complex flavor levels as it melted and would order that twice over. The amuse Bouche was a pleasant surprise. They were very accommodating with allergies and preferences. The dishes came out beautifully presented! The golden beet soup was refreshingly delicious. The lobster bisque was only okay, which was a bit disappointing as it tasted like a thin tomato soup with a smattering of seafood. The scallops were exquisite. Probably some of the best I've personally tasted. One party said they were under-cooked, but I felt they were perfect. I absolutely LOVED the sweet pea pods and tendrils and the butternut squash orange color pop beneath them with the lemon gel. The risotto was overly salted but the lump Crab was plentiful and fresh. The lump Crab cavatelli was okay, but didn't stand out. The dessert was splendidly divine- the mini cheesecake was light and fluffy with a mango atop it served with a tart Red Currant gelato that was fantastic. They really know how to make a birthday experience special complete with candle and a chocolate emblazoned Happy Birthday from the Charleston Place Hotel! My family made reservations for The highly demanded seatings for Thanksgiving well in advance after having great service and meals here prior. Overall my food was great in display and preparation. Pork belly tasted great which is a rarity to find one so perfectly cooked. Brussel sprouts baked just right. My slight disappointment was the Thanksgiving turkey meal. It didn't really stand out compared to everything else including the rest of the Thanksgiving menu and prior visits. It was very traditional and basic in taste which I expected more of when going to an upscale venue like this. My pumpkin cheese cake dessert, while looking like space food, had fantastic flavor and consistency. I think one of my biggest highlights here is the staff; they are amazing. They have such charisma, passion, and knowledge of their menus and wine. They're extremely accommodating as well , and the manager always checks on your satisfaction. Special props to our server who put up with my dad's jokes! The atmosphere is very intimate in some of the rooms, and they even had some live music on Thanksgiving. Service was above and beyond. I let them know on Rezy it was our anniversary. We were seated on the couch side by side instead of a regular table. We were also given a hand written notecard wishing us a happy anniversary and thanking us for spending it with them. We split the onion brodo soup for our appetizer which we both loved. Like French onion soup without the cheese. For our entrees my husband had the tenderloin which he said was one of the best he's ever had. Small portion but he was satisfied. I had the grilled eggplant that was served with the mushroom au poivre poured over at the table. I have never had eggplant served that way and I thought it was delicious. I did find it salty but I love salt. If you do not like salt, express it to your waiter ahead of time bc you will be disappointed. Cocktails were on point. We had our date night at Charleston Grill last week. We haven't been to this restaurant for quite a while. And this place offer a fine dining experience. We had early dinner reservation which was at 5:45 pm. Our waiter, James, was knowledgeable with the menu, very attentive with our needs and he had another server that came and help him that night, Sasha, and she was very sweet and always made sure our water refilled and our table and food deliver promptly. For starter, we had yellowfin tuna nicoise and it was amazing! It seared both sides with seasalt and the nicoise sauce was so good! Our waiter brought us crab cake as a compliment for our table and it was fantastic! Its a good size of crab meat with vierge sauce and caper, my favorite. Sasha brought us the sour bread and herb bread to our table and a small sauce plate with greek yogurt, Pomegranate and orange spices while we were waiting for our main course. Then for my main course I had local catch, which was crusted snapper that taste amazing! Love the spicy sauce that they made with Italian chili pepper and I asked James to replace the wax beans with brocollini which the chef was able to accommodate it. My husband had Chantel farm wagyu tenderloin from local farm in Augusta, Ga. It cooked to perfection and came with potatoes puree and amazing mushroom and the serve on top of bourgingnon sauce, I trued the steak and it was amazing. For appetizer, we opted the amazing apple desert that came with apple sorbet and they were party in my mouth! James also brought a brownie and coconut ball as q compliment for our table. I love all these food compliments that made our dinner feel special. Our meal and the drink selection at this place are top notch! The service quality and the atmosphere of this restaurant were excellent! Not a restaurant to go out of the way for. This is a typical convention restaurant. There are so many better restaurants in Charleston than this hotel restaurant. The bread service has sour dough, rosemary focaccia, and corn bread. Corn bread was the best. The crab cakes are mediocre. Nothing great. Their best dish is the foie Gras. The steak was dry and over cooked. Not good. The lemon asparagus risotto was better than the crab cake. The crème brûlée was a classic. The lemon pound cake with blueberry sorbet was good, but the blueberry sorbet was tart and awful. Skip this place unless you are stuck in the hotel and can't get a reservation elsewhere. read more

The food is beautifully presented and just exquisite. The bread basket varies and is hand served. Today the choice was rosemary focaccia, sourdough, rye and cornbread, served with butte with lava salt. I had the foie gras, which was served with a strawberry jam. I am blown away at the how the delicate flavors meld into one another. My main entree was the prime beef tenderloin, cooked to medium, served with potatoes that had a smoked flavor, with a sprinkling of foie gras (yes, again!) You can knock me over with a feather. We were staying at the Charleston Place and as it was a highly rated restaurant on the premises we had to try it. This is a very nice dining room and the staff to guest ratio is impressive. The menu is French inspired and the selection is modest. Had the feta & cucumber for starter. It was fresh and very tasty. For the main course I had the lamb loin and my better half had the scallops. The food were cooked to order and again very tasty. The presentation was simple, yet elegant. We had carrot cake and profiteroles for dessert. Small portion but packed with great flavors. They have an impressive wine list. We had a mixture Chardonnay and Cabernet with the meal and both were great. Given the large number of staff the service was excellent. I was not prepared and my phone died so I was not able to capture any photos. If you're able to, make reservations so you're not hoping you can get in. Beautiful place to enjoy a nice meal for any occasion. It is open and airy, almost a little romantic in my opinion. The staff is friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Vietnamese pork, seared scallops and beef tartar. All was delicious and prepared well. This is a more expensive place but the experience is worth it, especially if you don't live in the area. Located in historic downtown so you can take a nice walk afterwards. I've had the pleasure of dining here many times throughout the years and the service , ambiance and food quality is always consistently great . They always go above and beyond to make your dining experience exemplary. One of my favorite cocktails unique to the hotel is called the Chantilly : raspberry vodka, blood orange liqueur, cranberry, pineapple & citrus. It has a light berry sweetness with a tart finish and it's delicious! It's available at the Thoroughbred Club which like Charleston Grill is located inside Charleston Place Hotel. The bar inside the restaurant does not make the Chantilly but your server will gladly get it for you from the Thoroughbred- that is great service ! I love that the restaurant features nightly live jazz. The band is always great and not intrusive to your table conversations. I've ordered seafood , steaks and other unique dishes and everything has always been wonderful ! It's definitely a staple on my list of go-to restaurants. Parking : the hotel offers complimentary valet parking to guests -don't forget to tip when you pick up your vehicle . There is also the hotel paid parking garage located next to the hotel valet dropoff . Lastly , metered street parking is available along King Street & Hasell Street (as of March 2021 meters are free after 6pm but may need to check as this could change). This is another feather in the cap of the excellent Belmond Charleston Place hotel. Had a perfectly-executed and served dinner here. I was a single diner and their online reservation system does not allow for a reservation for one. However, if you call, they will gladly reserve you a spot in the bar area, which is very comfortable. The menu changes frequently, so there's no use waxing rhapsodic about particular dishes since they will probably have been replaced by some other fabulous creation in a few weeks. However, I will note that they did a particularly wonderful job with scallops paired with a brown butter sauce and almonds. There are three sections to the menu (Field & Pasture, Waves & Marsh, and Roots & Stems) and each section has two or three appetizer and two or three entree choices, so there's a good variety. The wine list is very nice and they will do a half glass if you prefer. The staff was wonderful and the dishes were perfectly paced. The restaurant is in the shopping arcade off the hotel lobby, but once you step into the clubby bar area, it feels like an oasis far from the Charleston hubbub. I thought the prices were very fair and right in line with restaurants of similar quality. read more

We had pork belly and lobster bisque for the first course. Main dishes. The fish dish I had was reminiscent of Frogmore stew only elevated, incredibly refined and delicious. My dining partner ordered the shrimp and pasta dish, which was incredible. The chef took simple ingredients and combined them in such unique ways and perfect amounts. So much flavor. The desserts were the final works of art to hit our table. Each was both fun and delicious. The chocolate cigar was like nothing we had ever seen or tasted. The coconut cheesecake was interesting and delicious, paired with the most perfect sorbet. The acoustic guitar and string bass duo were so enjoyable to listen to during our meal. They made complete an outstanding dining experience. So glad we went on a Sunday to hear them. The dining room is quiet, comfortable, beautifully decorated. I cannot overlook mentioning the beautiful tableware. I love a comfy dining chair and to be able to hear the people speak at my table. So we decided to return to The Charleston Grill for the first time in many years. I can say the experience still lives up to the memory. From the moment you enter, you are treated like a valued member of their inner circle. Brian was our server and he did a wonderful job. We decided to start the evening with a 1992 Jean Laurent, Blanc de Blancs, Celles-sur-Ource, Brut Champagne. It was wonderfully yeasty and like smooth honey....a phenomenal bottle of bubbly, even if the cork proved to be a little tough to remove from the bottle! We were brought a little amuse bouche of a blue cheese foam topped with a pecan. We started the meal with a double course of appetizers 1. Oysters Gratin - a nice little "casserole" of oysters, cheese, cream topped with bread crumbs. 2. Foie Gras - A Charleston Grill staple and a dish of greatness and great with the Champagne. For dinner we opted for an off menu special. A 30oz tomahawk ribeye aged for 60 days. Cooked to a wonderful Medium rare and delicious. We also ordered a side of butter beans topped with rice middlins and shrimp butter. To wash the Beef down we selected a 2006 López de Heredia, Viña Tondonia, Rioja, Reserva a wonderful wine suggested by Julie After a great meal like this we couldn't skip dessert! So, we decided to go with the Almond & Pistachio Gateau with pistachio, strawberry mascarpone, Lemon Ricotta Ice Cream. Tere chose to enjoy the dessert with a cappuccino but I opted for the suggested wine pairing, a 2016 Royal Tokaji, 5 Puttonyos Aszú, Tokaji a wonderful sweet "wine of the kings" that rivals anything coming out of Sauternes. Just to make sure we are sweet enough they did sit a little plate of chocolates on the table and sent us home with a little container (think a little black Chinese takeout container!) with 2 heart shaped macaroons. Get: foie gras; fish a la plancha; butter beans; crème brûlée Avoid: all bread service except corn muffins; heirloom tomato salad; tomato provencal The server, Nellie, was AMAZING! :) For appetizers we tried the crab cake, heirloom tomato salad, foie gras, risotto. The crab cakes were mediocre - they really didn't have any flavor and were not excellent. The heirloom tomato salad was okay - the blue cheese was not stellar and the bacon was too much. The risotto - is NOT a risotto other than it is similar to an Arborio or carnaroli grain but it is vegan so there is no cheese in it. The flavor was nice though for a rice dish. The foie gras was one of the best foie gras dishes I've ever had - even in Paris. Truly an incredible appetizer! For entrees, we got the fish a la plancha and prime filet. The fish was light and fresh but not incredibly flavorful. The filet was tender but over cooked and not flavorful - there should've been far more sauce. For sides we got the tomato Provençal and butter beans - the butter beans were great! The Tomato Provençal was SO SALTY - it was entirely inedible. They did take this off the receipt without asking but it was shockingly bad. The desserts were better than the entrees. The lemon blueberry cake is light and tastes similar to a lemon meringue pie but the accomplish blueberry sorbet is very tart. The crème brûlée was perfect. My wife and I came here to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We were extremely impressed by everything this fine restaurant had to offer! The food was one flavor bomb after another. We started with the scallops and had to keep ourselves from making inappropriate noises out loud because it was so amazing! Melted in your mouth, perfect sear, phenomenal flavor. The bread they served was accompanied by a delicious simple yet velvety butter. They offered us a delicious bite of their corn meal covered in bacon and nuts. Another great burst of flavor that doesn't fill you up. Our entrees were the crab cakes and lamb. Perfectly cooked lamb, beautiful sauce and the crab cakes had so many large chunks, it highlighted the crab meat above everything else. Cocktails were on point the whole evening. The service was exquisite. They were such a cohesive team that always knew the perfect timing to come in a check on us. Started with the crab cake and those are delicious, lump crab only honestly not sure what holds it together but I could eat 10 of them easily. I had the beef tenderloin and hubby had the lamb. The tenderloin was a good portion size and cooked well but the lamb was definitely way more fatty than we wanted for the price point. Cant go wrong. The service was exceptional, our server Taylor and Steve were just amazing with such an attention to detail. Even the food runner and younger looking guy was very personable. The timing for the courses was spot on. Definitely a top 10 meal at the 21 Club's sister restaurant. We arrived a little early so we could sit at the bar and grab a cocktail. I opted for their thyme old fashioned which was delicious and perfectly prepared. The bartenders also gave us some suggestions for other places to try while in town which I though was great. We were then promptly seated and greeted by our waiter who would be a fantastic host all evening. After letting us review the menus and wine list for a bit he helped make some recommendations for wine pairings. I decided on the foie gras as an appetize which he paired with a aged Riesling and the wife had the crab cake and a nice pinot grigio. The foie gras was the largest portion I've ever received and was perfectly prepared, melt in your mouth good. It paired perfectly with the sweet wine and made for an excellent appetizer. The wife felt the crab cake was the best she had. For my entre I had the lamb chops with mint jus and sweet potatoes and she opted for the scallops. I paired this with a split of Brunello and she went with a Meursault. The four lamb chops were immense and I sadly could not finish them but took them back to the hotel with along with a gift of a few rolls to make a couple of 'lambwiches'. The wine paired perfectly and the sides were amazing. The wife also really enjoyed her scallops and the wine pairing. After some petit fours we decided to split the creme brulee which was quite large too but very delicious and topped with fresh fruit. The sugar crust and creamy custard paired amazingly with the vintage port suggested by our server. We left quite full and very happy. The ambiance was really nice, it had the luxury feel of Peninsula Grill but without the old school southern rigidity. We started with 3 appetizers that we coursed out: the crab cake (it really is a must have!), the chicken fried hen of the woods (a good vegan starter but not something we'd have again), and the roasted Berkshire pork belly (would skip this altogether). Honestly, I know people talk about their crab cake but this truly was the best I've ever had. After appetizers, I ordered a glass of wine and we split the Fish a la Plancha entree. The wine selection was really nice and Taylor guided us to the Malbec to start. The Fish a la Plancha for the day was Red Snapper and it was honestly delicious- I wasn't expecting much but it blew us away. The romesco sauce it came with was so flavorful. We ended the birthday dinner with a dessert each- the cheesecake for me and the deconstructed chocolate cannoli for her. We both thought our own desserts were top notch but didn't care for each other's. Overall, it was a great experience and we'd love to return sometime in the future. read more

I had the best beef tenderloin and glass of cab with Melissa at the bar! The music was amazing. At first I was naturally a little "ehhh" about sitting down by myself for a solo dinner at such a nice place, but Melissa took such good care of me. She offered suggestions and paired the perfect wine with my meal. I was so comfy keeping to myself and enjoying the music! Made my night. read more

Charleston is a city just brimming over with fine restaurants and dining experiences. When it comes to food, it sets culinary standards and those standards are high. There are so many deservedly 5 star restaurants in Charleston I can't keep count but I can say the brightest of those bright 5 Stars is the Charleston Grill. I started my meal with a foie gras that was so smooth I have no idea what happened to it. It just sort of disappeared in my mouth but left a fine lingering taste of its enhancements, particularly that of a most unique and innovative bourbon-blueberry compote. Totally delicious and one of best prepared foie gras I've experienced. For my entrée I had their sturgeon and my dining companion their tenderloin, both of which we shared and both of which were absolutely outstanding. First off, at what other restaurant can one get sturgeon? Let me tell you, not many, and this sturgeon with enhancements of Meyer lemon, a salsa and Spanish ham was top notch. Though I can't be certain, I believe the ham was, by its familiar taste, of Peregrino brand which is top class. Having myself just spent some $500 for about a 14 pound leg of it for my home use, I know it to be the best of the best. As for my companions tenderloin, again outstanding. The red wine reduction paired so perfectly well with their in house prepared béarnaise it was just a totally delicious dish. read more

From the atmosphere with a live jazz duet, to the comfortable surroundings despite the Covid restrictions, to the food which was some of the best we've ever enjoyed; this place is a must!!
