Celebrated a friend's birthday here recently. Cocktails are delicious! The 5 of us each got different drinks. I got the kombucha mule and it was refreshing without being too sweet. We also split an order of the KFC wings which were salty and a teeny bit spicy and saucy - I'd definitely get those again! I also ordered the beef bulgogi, which came out on a hot stone plate sizzling with a generous side of lettuce, rice, pickled red onions, and some kind of sauce that I wish I could recreate at home. My only complaint is that the restaurant itself is a little hard to find...the logo on the outside of the restaurant is small and hard to read, making it not super visible from your car as you drive past. We were able to find it from the sidewalk with a bit of searching, but they definitely didn't make it easy on us. read more

I've been in Milwaukee for less than 24 hours and I've already decided this is one of the best restaurants in the whole city. Maybe people are just nicer in Milwaukee, but from the minute I walked in the door I felt welcome at Char'd. The design and staff created a warm, inviting environment (although the music was pop-y). It's the kind of place you can really dress up or keep it casual depending on your night. The service was fantastic - kind and attentive. To be fair, my co-worker and I visited on a Thursday night during football season, so when we arrived there were only a few other seated tables. We started with cocktails. I had the blackberry mojito (which I proceeded to drink way too fast because it was just so delicious). For appetizers, we shared the dumplings and lemon salt edamame. Wow...what an amazing place! My younger sister was getting ready to deploy for the military and this was her last night to spend with us before she left. She wanted Korean and we thought we'd try this place and boy are we so happy we did. Not only is the ambiance amazing but the drinks and food are top notch! I had a Kombucha Mule and it was delicious and we shared a bottle of wine around the table. We ordered 2 orders of the KFC wings to go around the table and they were SO SO SO good!!! We all tried about 6 different entrees and dumplings and all shared our plates. It was so so good. Seriously, I'm so happy we found this place and gave it a shot because it was great. I loved this place! I had the kimchi disco fries (weren't my fav but still good), kfc wings, and kimchi beef fried rice. The wings were delicious and the fried rice was out of this world - wish the bottom was a bit more crispy. We also had the chocolate hazelnut cookie and pistachio cream puff. I just visited Char'd over the weekend with five other girlfriends of mine, and we LOVED this place. From the food and ambience all the way down to the unique gold silverware/chopsticks. (I did attempt a valiant effort with the chopsticks, but did a mediocre job at best since I'm not used to metal chopsticks haha). Our waitress was absolutely lovely, and answered a ton of questions about drinks, favorite foods, spicy-level, you name it. She was super nice when answering all of our questions, and helped us with a group photo too! We made a reservation for 6 PM on a Saturday, though there were several spaces open so perhaps not *necessary*. It did get quite busy around 6:45-7:00 PM. Our food was fantastic, and it came out SO fast. We were really in/out of this restaurant in an hour. Totally recommend getting the Char'd dumplings. another great Asian dining option in the Third Ward! What a surprise! I lucked-out on finding this place for lunch on their opening day. I had the Asian seasoned salad with dumplings. The flavor and freshness of the greens were wonderful, and the dumplings were well above my expectations. My business contact had the similar salad with chicken, and it looked great too. Lunch at Char'd was a welcome break for me and a business contact. I had work downtown and a meeting near the new restaurant. Service was friendly and quick. Presentation was definitely more artistic than I would have expected. Practically across the street from MIAD... I suppose I should have expected high attention to presentation and style, but it didn't occur to me until just now as I write my thoughts. I will definitely be back again for the lunchtime idea... with two things in mind: (1) I liked the Jasmine Iced Tea, but there are many other beverage choices that work well with the light lunch options. I could see coming between 11 and 2 just for something to drink--especially for the beverages that aren't going to be at the coffee shops. I've been to Char'd twice and both times I've had a wonderful experience. The service is incredible. One of my visits was for a party of 16 and they were very accommodating before and during our visit, and I was impressed that they were able to do separate checks for everyone and nothing was billed incorrectly (definitely an anomaly in the restaurant world with a party that big). My favorite dish was the fried dumplings. The Beef Bulgogi was really good too and I didn't love the Galbi because it was very fatty and not much meat. And I will say the glass noodle dish was a bit lacking in flavor but everything else was fantastic. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and look forward to coming back. read more

We've heard so much about Char'd and finally had the opportunity to try it. It lived up to the hype. The atmosphere was modern meets an apothecary garden. The staff is wonderful, inviting and attentive. Fiona recommended many great dishes. We started with a leeky chicken app and then devoured stir fry glass noodle and tofu bibimbap. The bibimbap was lacking something, needed more of a kick despite the spicy sauce. The beef stir fry was on point. Overall we will be back! Food and atmosphere was fantastic, unfortunately our waiter did not provide us with the great service that he did to other tables next to us, so our experience was disappointing. Food was delicious! We chose grilled avocado appetizer which was perfect to start (served with only two crostini for a full avocado, left you eating the creamy green goodness by itself; not totally bad). Dinner entrees were beef bulgogi and stir fry glass noodles with tofu - both were amazing and we enjoyed the presentation and being able to share. The dining experience was disappointing as we saw our waiter provide much better service to our neighboring tables. Our appetizer took more time to arrive than it did for the people next to us to receive and eat their entrees. Second, Char'd provides a dramatic presentation of warm hand towels for diners which we saw toward the end of our meal at the table next to us. We also were not asked about dessert or coffee/tea at the end of our meal. The final disappointment was that we were provided with a to go box, clear deli type container with lid (very smart) but another employee noticed us grab it to leave and offered a bag to carry it. read more

The restaurant was disappointing for our weekly date night out. It really came down to waitress and the slowness of service. We waited 25 minutes for our simple bar drinks, got the wrong appetizer & didn't even request the correct one because we didn't want to wait another 45 minutes for something to eat! Our food was just okay. We had to ask for refills on water when one of the entrees was a bit spicy and just didn't feel like the restaurant took care of us as guests. We are out of town. We were looking for the great place for dinner. We were feeling for Asian food. So we decided to try this place. Since we didn't have a reservation we went and sat by the bar. The foods and the drinks were so good, but the service was not great. The bartenders did not try to check on us at all! They kept talking to their friends who sat next to us. Outside of the service, everything was fantastic. I'm from the Midwest (Indiana) and we take pride in our hospitality and service, sadly I can't say we were represented well on this visit. I would chalk it up to having a bad night, but considering they weren't busy, it was somewhat of a shameful performance. Have been there for lunch twice. The first time was with my colleague. I got the black bean noodle which had an egg, some seafood and vegetables, and I really liked it. My colleague got the beef bowl and she was happy with the food quality as well. The second time was with my friend who loves ramen and have been to many ramen places around the country and in Japan. came for lunch on a Monday afternoon. restaurant was open & the waitstaff was very kind and attentive. beautifully decorated restaurant with great gold silverware, community tables & booths. waitress encouraged us to try something with the sweet/spicy sauce, so we went for the fried pork dumplings as an appetizer. she was right, the sauce was delicious! would definitely get again. after being undecided on my meal, I ended up with the pork kimchi over rice. the dish came warm on a skillet with all sorts of kimchi, pork, seaweed, egg. I went here with two of my friends and I have conflicted feelings about this place. We went on a Friday night and they did not have any tables available (definitely call for a reservation!), but the hostess was rude and not entirely helpful when we asked about bar seating. We ended up sitting by the bar and did not receive very good service there either. Our bartender had to ask us what we ordered again after about 5 minutes of waiting for our drinks and then after we ordered our food they delivered the wrong dish -- they did get us the correct one soon after. I would rate the service a 2 and I am not being dramatic. When I am spending around $30 for my meal I hope to have my dishes cleared in front of me, especially if we are talking for about 25 minutes after we have finished eating. The food and cocktails; however, really made up for the subpar service. I ordered the Black Cherry Mojito and loved it. My friends ordered the Jeju Paloma and the Yuzu Beez, both were really nicely presented, especially the Yuzu Beez, and were delicious. We then ordered the KFC Wings, Char'd Dumplings, Perilla Avocado, and Kimchi Pork. All were incredible, but I would go back there every day and order the KFC Wings and Char'd Dumplings if I could. I have been looking for a place in Milwaukee with Korean Fried Chicken for some time now and I have finally found a place that does it well! If you go here, they are a must! Interiors are on point!! Super cool vibe right when you walk in. Bar and high tops on first level and then dining tables on the upper level. A big communal table in dining room came with a promise of 10% off drinks if you sat there to encourage the trend. Drinks: lychee martini was amazing (no one ever makes cocktails with them!!)but they were out of a ginger honey for a few drinks the table was interested in, but offered up an alternative. Food: appetizers were the best part! The seafood pancake was to DIE for, dumplings, fried chicken wings and beef tartare were excellent per other reviews. They were out of the Char'd dumplings, as they were waiting for a shipment of ingredients to make them. I agree with other comments that the tartare was sweet, which I'd never had before, but paired with the salty seaweed chips, it was perfect! Beef Bulgolgi was by far the best entree; our table tried the Char'd Chicken and Galbi too. Galbi was incredibly chewy and very fatty, so not a table fave. Presentation on the hot stones was great though across all entrees and plates in general. Churro with ice cream for dessert was great, but in hindsight, all desserts on menu seemed to be a departure from the Korean fusion theme. Would totally recommend for date night, or groups! Ventured out on a Saturday night with friends. They were booked by reservations so only had room at the bar. We were a group of 5, so we decided to hang out in the bar area since it's still full food service. Drinks were definitely delicious per my group. I could not partake in the alcoholic fare-- but I tried their galaxy lemonade. It was pretty and tasted basically like a solid lemonade (so not quite worth the price). My SO and I tried the pork bulgogi & ssam. The sizzling lava stone/presentation is very eye-appealing. I wish I took a picture but completely forgot. The portion felt a little on the smaller side for the price, but it was really the veggie side of the portion. Small scoop of rice, three slices of pickled veggies, some pickled onions, some ssamjang, and a small bunch of lettuce! Would have expected at least a bigger handful of lettuce for the wrap... but the pork bulgogi itself was solid. Seasoned well, a little spice. The rest of my group also enjoyed their dishes (superbowl and kimchi sesame noodle). Very veggie friendly! The space is beautiful, clean, and modern. The service was mediocre... but maybe because we were in the bar area. Overall, as an avid lover of Korean food, it's definitely a fusion/modern Korean cuisine that is well done. A litttttle on the pricey side for the portion, at least for the grill & ssam menu. Would definitely come back again to try many of the other options. My first experience was so/so and wanted to give Char'd another chance. The ambience and decor is very tacky. I don't know if they are trying to be ironic or not, but I doubt it. Gold chop sticks, c'mon. Second experience was with Ramen that was so bland that we had to add a whole ramekin of Saracha to give it any taste. I would compare it to super market ramen but with an egg and some meat in it, but packet ramen has more flavor. With the small trickle of diners here, I would expect Char'd will live a very short life. read more

Being an Asian person and coming from Providence RI (where the chef was trained), I had a pretty high hope for this restaurant. Short Conclusion: Ah, it was okay: the interior is spot-on with modern industrial theme, the staffs are courteous, the food is not bad. We were there during lunch time and had Chushu ramen and Bulgoki Bowl. The Chashu had the great Char'd taste, and the Bulgoki bowl (which was on sweeter side) was served with pretty pink pickled onion and spring veggies. The dishes were definitely pretty to look at, and they tasted okay. Now, I don't want to sound mean. So my original expectation was to find something authentic at this place, but here they serve fusion food that is geared towards those who are less familiar with Korean/Asian cuisine. And for that purpose, this place is great! I can take any and all of my friends who are not of Asian descent here without any hesitation, and I'm pretty sure that they all would find something yummy. read more

Surprisingly, not much to say. It was baseline Korean food. Not great, not terrible. Presentation was really nice. Everything looked fantastic and delicious. The ambiance was nice--modern. Kind of reminded me of Third Coast Provisions. The bulgogi was a bit mushy--so it wasn't my favorite. The pork could use more oomph with some salt and a bit more of the kimchi sourness. The sides were good. Service was pretty interesting. Very slow. The guy literally wrote every word of what we ordered...made it an awkward experience. He didn't know how to use a wine opener and attempted twice at our table and both times had to take the bottle to the back to have someone do it for them. As a Korean, and the one lived in United States for quite long and tasted a lot of different style of foods, I can say this restaurant has an authentic taste and expression of modern style both. I tried lunch menu, black bean noodle, chashu ramen, kimchi pork with two more friends. I really enjoyed my chashu ramen, I think it is the best ramen in Milwaukee. And both of my friends finished their dish as I can see the bottom side of dishes, so I can assume their's were good too. And for the drink, my friends loved korean coffee which is sweet and soft flavor coffee, and my grapefruit ade was fresh and super refreshing. Atmosphere was very modern and intimate as well. I like that dark blue color matched with Ivory bricks and green moss wall. Service, I think they are helping each other during lunch time, so I could ask to any one of them. And especially the manager Hank were caring us a lot, and seemed caring other table well too. Appreciate attentive and friendly service. Finally checking this place out! I was dazzled the moment we sat down simply because of the gold flatware, including gold chopsticks! So pretty. The menu is pretty large and gives a lot of interesting options. Per the recommendation of our server we started off with KFC Wings. They were SO good! Saucy but still had a crispiness to them and the flavor was tangy and delicious. Next time will try the Pork Belly since that looked amazing too! We split the Beef Bulgogi which came with sticky rice and lettuce to make into wraps - the beef was awesome, but for $25 I kind of expected there to be a little more food. My only other gripe was that the "Galaxy Lemonade" was $5 which seems a little ridiculous for a lemonade with some purple syrup in it! Overall, it was a good experience with good food. Food is ok for fusion. I would come back here for KFC. Beef Bulgogi was over priced and nothing special about it. We had 5 people at out table and we ordered a ton of food! Braised belly is very good! Black bean noodle (too sweet!!) is not recommended. I came to try because of black bean noodle and I was disappointed. The seafood soup was one of our left overs and we didnt take it back. The soup was not good, or maybe it was just my opinion. I will give 3 stars for now for a new business. read more

I really wanted to like this place ... I will start by saying our super bowls were delicious. everything else was not so good. We sat at the community table. We waited at least 20 min for someone to notice us, even though a hostess sat us. When one server came over, he then said he wasn't our server and we waited again. When our actual server came over, he said that we would have to wait a while for drinks, as they only had one bartender. and boy did we wait. We ordered edamame. it was so overcooked that the shells were falling apart. Our drinks took as long as the first dish. 1 of 3 people received their super bowl 30 min before 2 of us received ours. Staffing seems to be the big problem here. It started off well, being sat promptly and actually got a drink order and appetizer in right away. There were 4 of us. We ordered a beer, a lemonade and 4 waters. The beer and lemonade came promptly and then that was it. We then sat for 20 minutes and no one had water, still no appetizer, and haven't even been asked to order main dishes. We finally gave up and I went to the front desk to pay for what we got and was told I needed to wait for my server. I asked if anyone else could do it and she said no. Sensing my annoyance, she did at least go back and get our server. Then she rings up the beer, lemonade, and edamame. I had to ask her if she was actually going to give me the edamame since she just charged me for it. She went in the back and had it put in a to-go container while I stood there waiting. Finally as I'm ready to walk out the door, a manager comes up and asks if everything is ok. I told her no and very briefly described why we were leaving. I hesitate going to a new restaurant too early because most of kinks they need to work out. So I thought 6 months later was safe. My friend and I went on a Saturday night, it was semi busy. I loved the decor, it's trendy without trying to hard. We ordered drinks, both cocktails. The kombucha mule and a moon white. It look over 30 minutes to receive the drinks because they were out of copper mule mugs. Our waiter didn't tell us, we had to ask. They wouldn't bring the moon white out until the other was complete. And they never asked if I would take the drink in a different cup, which I would have. We ordered the Char'd Dumplings which were good but pretty spicy. We then decided to split the super bowl with beef and the kimchi sesame noodle. Both had great flavors, but I wish the waiter or the menu would have mentioned one being hot and one being cold. It might have changed our minds on ordering. Overall, I would go again, but I'm a little on the skeptical side for service. read more
