Came here for dinner. The restaurant became very busy after 7pm. I can understand why. The decor is open and modern, the noisy level is not very high so we can talk without shouting at each other. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. What impress me the most was the taste of the food. We ordered the scallion pancake, the soft tofu stew and the beef bulgogi. The flavor was very authentic and very well balanced. Bulgogi came with lettuce wrap and gochujang to make it a even more authentic experience. The soft tofu stew was filled with seafood and not afraid to have a spiciness level that I appreciated. The scallion pancake was on the thicker side, but nevertheless maintained the taste you would expect from something a Korean grandma would make. The rice they served was mixed with forbidden rice. If you can find it, go now! I'm an out of towner and found this place on Yelp. So glad I decided to try it. Had a somewhat early dinner -- KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) wings which were bathed in a sticky sweet sauce. The way Koreans do their fried chicken is legit and I'm pretty sure it's carb free (not). I also got the soft tofu stew which was damn hot (temp and spice) -- just how I like it. Only burned what I think was my esophagus once so pretty damn successful. It's not the best tofu stew but for Downtown Milwaukee, it was damn good. The lady next to me got the pork bulgogi, which smelled so damn good, I was tempted to reach my chopsticks over...I didn't though. So, if you dig K-food, check it out. read more

I give the hostess a 1 for being ungrateful and 4 for the food. We were there Friday when they opened at 4:30. Of course, there's no 1 there but us. We asked for a booth and she nastily said "That's for 6 people." Given there was only 3 of us in the group, the place was empty til after 5 pm. I ordered over $150 worth of food. By the time we left, the place was only 1/2 full. The 3rd booth was STILL EMPTY. The hostess never smiled like we're bothering her. She never thank us when we left. The waitress was lovely, she did sit us by in a booth after my husband asked her. Thanks to her, she made our night a lot better than the hostess that you see when you first walk in the door. We ordered the gnocchi, pork belly, beef marrow, wings, gyoza, soup, paella, plus 2 desserts. Everything is almost with kimchi. But they are delicious. I was a bit hesitant to come to this place at first, due to the previous reviews. However I am SO GLAD I did! All the dishes are SO FLAVORFUL, the opposite to some of the previous reviews. My guess would be they had some inconsistencies when they first opened, but those have definitely been ironed out now! Char'd sets itself apart from other Korean restaurants in town, by doing contemporary Korean fusion food. I have been here four times now so far, and they managed to provide the consistency in all the dimensions: from presentations and flavor of the food, to the variety of food and wine selections, to great services. It really sets the new standard of Asian or any other fusion cuisine in town. The price is also reasonable, the decor is posh and contemporary. Please try the peach dessert, it really surprises you! A few of my other favorites: beef tartare, pancakes, KFC wings, paella (the portion is so generous, also flavorful with a nice kick!), and also any of the grilled dishes). read more

Early this year I was interviewed at Char'd but did not take the offer I was given. Although I didn't take up the position I was interested in what kind of Korean restaurant it would be. I was able to try out this amazing place and the food was great. We started off with the seafood pancake which we really liked, but it was a bit smaller compared to others that I've tried. The lava steak was a bit expensive but was a great concept my boyfriend and I did enjoy. I tried the pork bulgogi which had lot of great and powerful flavor. My favorite dish was the dumpling soup. The glass noodles were a great addition to it as well. I was every excited to try the galaxy lemonade but was a bit disappointed that it tasted more like sparkling water rather than lemonade. Let me start off by saying that I love Korean food. So when there was a new restaurant in town, we were very excited to go here. We took the in laws here for Fathers Day and were a little hesitant to see if they loved it as much as we did. And they did! We got the KFC wings, kimchi pancake, dumplings and tartare for the appetizers. We then got bimimbop, golgi plates, and tofu pork belly- all were AMAZING. The waitstaff was great and very helpful in helping the in-laws find something they would like. I loved this restaurant and hope it becomes a staple in Milwaukee. Excellent food, atmosphere, and staff! Came here for a date night and had a wonderful experience. The Yogurt Soju was a perfect size for sharing with a date. Light and refreshing flavor. We started with Edemame; can't go wrong with that app! Also had the Char'd Dumplings, which had a tiny kick to them. We shared the Braised Belly - this was tender, juicy, and melted in your mouth! Ended the night with their apple dessert (which I am completely blanking on the name). Filled with real apples, and shaped like an apple! This place is Korean (fusion ish) mainly small plates but they have entrees as well... I was pleasantly surprised by their food! I started with the char'd dumplings (far right) they were pretty good nothing insanely special but not bad, they came with a crème fraîche sauce which is not something I'd seen before, it was a peculiar choice. Next I got the shishito pepper and cauliflower and it was AMAZING! Would 100% recommend this dish. The sauce was soo good a bit on the spicy side but not crazy, it definitely has sesame as well. Next we got the Leeky chicken which is deep friend chicken thighs with fried and fresh leeks (#LeeksTwoWays #TopChefPuns) this was also suuuuper good, the sauce is heavy on the garlic and very yummmmy. Last but not least we tried the white kimchi cold noodle, now I've heard and read about cold noodle dishes being very common and popular in Korea but I had never tried one before this. It was... interesting. I think I prefer my noodles hot but I am glad I tried it and would recommend it if you're interested in trying a popular Korean dish. Went here on a Wednesday during a start of a snow storm. It wasn't very busy. Food was good service was good. I ordered the KFC wings that were perfectly spiced and the edamame that was less to be desired. The edamame had lemon salt on it and it was corse on the pods. Our waitress was extremely attentive and that's why I provided 4 stars and not 3. It's not a place I would pick for dinner again however, if a group suggested it for dinner I would still enjoy the wings. read more

Korean bbq wings: delicious! They're crispy and have a bbq style sauce on them. You get 6 wings which is a good small meal or appetizer. As someone who can't handle spicy foods well, these were manageable! Edamame: I highly recommend you can get these with garlic and Chile. They give you a large bowl of them and they're currently $3 during happy hour (4-6 pm I believe) Spicy dumplings: so so good! Fried potstickers with a slightly spicy sauce on them. You get 6. Spicy chicken: well made chicken, could be larger portion. If you can't handle spicy foods well, perhaps pass on this one. Great service at the bar. The bartenders were friendly but give you space to enjoy your meal. I went on Valentine's Day, and they didn't allow any non reservations seating in the dining room, so if it's a holiday, make a reservation! read more

But, this is not the menu they're currently offering in the restaurant on Sundays. We went last Sunday and found that the prices are significantly higher, with entrees around $16 and soups a separate $9-$10 - there's no combo for $18. Char'd needs to update their menu online so patrons don't feel misled when they arrive at the restaurant and see much higher prices than advertised online. read more

We wanted to order cocktails to start, but at 6pm on a Sunday night the bartender hadn't shown up for work, and our server said that there wasn't anyone there to make us the drinks! Fail! Later during our meal, she came and told us that the bartender had finally arrived, and she could get us drinks. But by then, we were into our meal and had lost interest in cocktails. Maybe another time. As for the food, we liked it, even though it relies on that trifecta that soooooo many restaurants seem to rely most on (fat, salt, sugar), haha. 5 stars for bringing delicious Korean fusion to Milwaukee. I had the opportunity to sample some of their food and knew I had to come back for Happy Hour shortly after. This is in the former Hinterland space and has the same format with the bar below and the restaurant space behind. The Happy Hour is from 4:30-6 and features $4 beer, $5 wine, $6 cocktails, and some food specials. I have to start with the highlight: the Korean Fried Chicken is to die for - double fried with a perfect sauce that is not too spicy. We also shared the scallion pancake with Kimchi, which was so good - it packed a lot of vegetables in a delicious batter. We each had a noodle dish for dinner: the stir fry glass noodles and the black bean noodles. They were both good, but not the highlight. Finally, we had the beef bulgogi which was SO good. The meats and starters were the definite standout for me here. I would definitely recommend coming in to try it. read more

We needed a place that could handle a group of 13, prior to a theatre experience. Char'd was not only set up to do this, they did it with perfection. The service was attentive but didn't feel rushed. The offered to split the checks into each of our family groups, saving the time we would have needed to do that. The cocktails were unusual and delicious; they have good wine and beer selections. And the food? Delicious! Some of us had tapas, while others did more main dishes. The flavors were deeply rooted in Korean, but the preparations were unique to Char'd. Was seeking out a nice dinner for a 30th Birthday. Instead found ourselves extremely disappointed when our entrees all came out cold. We were told that their oven was broken which caused that. So they decided to reheat our dishes. Which ultimately led to completely overcooked beef dishes. The icing on top of it it all was a completely inattentive server who could rarely be found.
