I was so upset with this place. The elegance and the ambiance and the staff were great however I ordered a medium well steak with shrimp... only to get two shrimps (WHAT!!) and the steak was so freaking bloody I became so disgusted not a medium well at all it was more like rare.... and it just tasted so rancid. Recently enjoyed a wonderful lunch in the bar. Fried green tomatoes and ginger-peanut chicken. The service was amazing. Myself and some friends tried Char for a birthday brunch and OMG, I am so very pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed everything. Our server was Mallory (what are the odds she has my name!!) and she was simply amazing! We went on a Saturday during brunch. I ordered the cornbread dusted red fish and by the time Mallory had finished going around the table, she'd convinced two of the others to get that as well and we had the shrimp and grits. The red fish was AMAZING! This was the first time no one at the table reached for the salt or pepper, everything was perfectly seasoned to perfection!! The collard greens were made with love and you could taste it in every bite! Overall, I think I might go back today and get a veggie plate before I head back home to Arkansas! Good job and keep it up, Memphis needs more fine dining at reasonable prices!! read more

Amazing brunch. Tried the pork rinds was skeptical but they were so good as were the fried oysters. I had the southern Benedict, my son had the chicken and biscuits, my husband had the crab cakes and our other son had the regular Benedict. Everything was incredible!! I think this place is great. 1st time there and it was my wife's birthday. Everyone we saw (hostess, servers, ect) wished her Happy Birthday. Little thing alike that are nice. Food was great overall. Shrimp and grits was very good and shrimp were cooked great (tender). Sauce was alittle different but very favorable. My wife had redfish and it was great! Flakey and full of flavor. I had the Seafood Carbonara and it was really good. Shrimp were great. Noodles and sauce were great. Did not have a lot of crawfish tails, but still very good. Chipotle sweet potato mash was great as a side. Brownie something for dessert was really good and chocolatey! Service awesome and good worth the price. The salmon was literally melting in my mouth. It was some of the best salmon I've ever had in Memphis. I do wish the couscous with it had been a bit warmer, temperature wise, but otherwise everything was superb. The vinaigrette on the salmon was completely amazing and I'm not a vinaigrette fan typically. Then we got the blueberry whisky bread pudding for dessert and it was also absolutely amazing. I could not wait to try this new upscale Memphis restaurant after hearing about the stellar menu and service. The service did not disappoint and neither did the food...except for one obviously sub-par selection. The interior is beautifully appointed with low ambiant lighting. The tables are spaced far enough apart from one another so there's no feeling that strangers are forced to intrude on your meal. That being said, each table is topped with butcher paper. Not something I'm used to seeing at a high caliber establishment. Practical but for the cost and the experience, they should ditch the paper coverings and spring for the table cloth cleaning bill. The service was on point from the moment we walked through the door. Our server J.D. was knowledgeable, timely and friendly. We ordered what were possibly the best crabcakes I've ever eaten, several different cocktails (awesome bourbon selection), seafood pasta, truffle fries, the ribeye steak and pecan pie. Everything was amazing except for the steak. Being that we were at a steakhouse, this was a surprising disappointment. The ribeye was fatty, marginally flavorful and tough tough tough. Did I mention that it was tough!? I gave up on chewing it halfway through the entrée. I do not recommend a steak from Char. Order at your own risk. I wanted to love it but was not that impressed. We decided to try Char for a birthday dinner because it was located about halfway between where both parties live (downtown and Collierville). Service was ok--not great. They forgot dressing for two parties and mine was served on my salad instead of on the side like I requested. The food was good--not great. I was lame and just got a salmon Caesar salad, which is hard to mess up. I also tried the other three dishes and nothing "wow'ed" me. I didn't care for the remoulade on the crab cakes, the shrimp and grits were good, but if you can't handle spicy, I would stay away. The redfish and grits was probably the best dish I tried. Bottom line: There are too many incredible restaurants in my backyard for me to drive 20 minutes for meh service and meh food. Oh and for a restaurant of this caliber, get ready to pay $3 for bread. read more

I've been to Char a few times recently and it always impressed me. The Bar has a great ambience and vibe to it & the bartenders are always great. The food has always been delicious. The Steak & Bleu Salad + the crab cakes are both must try's. Overall Char has great food and great hospitality. I was a little nervous about trying out a steakhouse, but foodies gotta food and I was so excited to dine during the soft opening. The food was incredible and our server was the best- hey, Joshua! I noticed the veggie plate is only a lunch option, but Joshua suggested I make a plate of side dishes and I promise I left stuffed. I had the spinach salad to start then a plate of red wine mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, and white cheddar caramelized onion mac and cheese. They aren't kidding around when say these things are 'sides to share' and I definitely had to after losing my fight with the mac and cheese. My date had the fried green tomatoes for a starter, spinach salad (it was large enough for us to split) and the pan seared Atlantic salmon. Note: I'm not a fan of fried green tomatoes, but I swiped a bite for myself and was made a believer. I had my birthday dinner at Char and I have zero complaints. Aimee, the manager helped me plan my night from start to finish. I had a table of 12 guests. The private dining room that I wanted was booked, but we ended up in a pretty secluded area anyway. The restaurant was packed (understandable for a Saturday night). Yet our waitress was fast and attentive as if we were her only table. I had the ribeye with sautéed mushrooms and loaded mashed potatoes. Along with a woody creek mule and the Bourbon. My steak was cooked to medium perfection! It was juicy, melted in my mouth with every bite and tasted AMAZING!! The mashed potatoes were delicious, the drinks were just as good with the perfect amount of alcohol. My guests ordered the pork chops, NY strips, and redfish dishes. They all raved about how good their food was. My only regret is that I didn't get to try any of their desserts because I had a cake brought in from another restaurant. They lit my candles for me and brought in my cake when everyone was finished eating. I had a great experience at Char and I can't wait to try their other dishes. read more

Char is a very nice "white tablecloth" dining establishment. I went during Sunday brunch and received very good service. I ordered the shrimp & grits and my friend got the chicken & waffles. I read about the chicken in the reviews, but not the grits. I will tell you that both are outstanding! The server did advise that there would be a little bit of a kick in the sauce of the shrimp & grits. And it was just slight enough so that it was noticeable, but not overbearing. The portion was plentiful and shrimps were bountiful. Do give them a try! read more

Max, our waiter, friendly and knew his job. Salads- 5 stars. The Wedge maybe the best I've ever had. Dressings are homemade. Entree steak, top notch. Red fish breading overpowered the fish, although was told it was their most popular item. 4.5 stars. Sides. Mac-N-Cheese 5 stars, the white cheddar along with the caramelized onions made delicious and unique. Garlic mashed potatoes 4 stars good not great. Onion rings 2 stars, heavy breading but limp ring, would not order again. Desert. 5 stars. Homemade pecan pie with ice cream. More like a tart than a pie but delicious. I don't even know where to begin! I decided to take my Fiance here after being cooped up most of the year with Covid. A colleague of mine said that this restaurant was abiding by the Covid rules, separating tables to keep distance and everyone was mandated to wear masks so I thought it would be a great place to take a chance on.....The ambiance alone is spectacular and very romantic. The service was great and the manager was very sweet! The food was SUPERB!!! We started the night off with the crab claws from the appetizer menu. My fiance ordered the Prime NY strip and absolutely loved it!! He ordered it well done but it was still juicy and tasted amazing. His meal was delightfully placed with a house salad, loaded mashed potatoes and large jumbo shrimp. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and it too was awesome! Then to top the night off we ordered the Pecan Butter Crunch and OMG!!!! This dessert literally melts in your mouth!! He has not stopped raving about this restaurant since Saturday and now compares everything he eats to this restaurant say "Ehh, its ok... But it's not Char". lol.... The food was a little slow to make its way to our table, half an hour for bread and appetizers is a little long. However, it was well worth the wait. I did find a couple of bones in my salmon, which I luckily caught before I swallowed them! It was so delicious that it didn't stop me, but do beware of that when ordering the salmon. Portions are huge, and make for great leftovers. Overall, I'd return. Money well spent! Update- I came back a couple months ago to celebrate my birthday, and there were no issues with the salmon this time. Everything was perfect. Waitstaff was amazing, and following all CDC recommendations. The Riesling is great, and my glass was never empty. I decided to get a brownie to go, and our waiter packaged it up so attentively, and even threw in a candle so I could light it at home.
