Mean Owner... yes! I normally don't write reviews but this owner is an ass! Yes the owner was right about the situation, but I'm just not happy about the way the he approached it, but nonetheless...
Read on if you care to hear about my situation. Otherwise the above seems to be the main reason to avoid this place. Most of the reviews about Cassie's on yelp agree. And by most reviews on here, I believe the owner is just mad at the world. lol
---------------
My wife and I have been to The Roxbury Motel once before a few years ago (great motel BTW, ultra friendly people with cool rooms) and yes we went to Cassie's. The experience our first time was fine. We had breakfast there. It was a standard breakfast so I can't say the food was great, but it wasn't bad either. It was just whatever. The owner probably wasn't there that day...
Fast forward a few years later and include our 2 year old this time. We were greeted and seated by a friendly waitress who took our order. While we were waiting for our food, our 2 year old started playing with the sweetener packets on the table. At first I took them away and he began to get fussy and scream. Anyone with a 2 year old knows that no matter what you do or say, there's no calming them down if they really want something. So, whatever, we let the boy play with the sugar packets, it's fine.
A gentleman who was sitting across from us came over and rudely explained that sugar is to be consumed not to be played with. At first I sat there with a dumb look on my face like "Are you serious?". I then explained to the owner, I presume, that it's just sugar. He went on and treated us as if we were children. Apparently, I must have a youthful face... I'm a 30 year old man lol. He mentioned something about me doing my job and being a parent. Obviously he's never raised a 2 year old. There's a reason why they call it the "Terrible Two's". Most kids this age cannot sit idle and remain a Saint very long. Especially in a diner such as Cassie's. And a 2 year old does not care if you're his parent, he does not care if you're the Chief of Police and he certainly does not care if you're the President of the United States. He will scream until he gets what he wants. (BTW I have a total of 11 nephews and nieces whom I've taken care of over the years. So yes, even though he is my first child, this is not my first time around the block with raising kids lol.)
Anyway, I agree sugar is not a toy but it's not like he was swinging from the chandelier. If my 2 year old playing with sugar packets is so annoying to him, I am willing to pay $1 for it. I think that would've tripled the amount he paid for the what... 12-15 splendas / equals? I honestly think that it wasn't only just my 2 year old playing with the sugar but the fact that we weren't from Roxbury that bothered him.... oh well.
The waitress came out with the food we ordered while the "owner" stood there collecting the sugar packets from the table. At this point, I'm thinking "We're on vacation and there's no need to get into bullshit like this", so I politely asked the waitress to pack the food to go. She was more than friendly but had a scared look on her face. I'm assuming she's his daughter? We paid for the food, I graciously thanked her and as we walked out, I rudely thanked him.
All in all, this place is not really worth the trouble and I no longer will be knocking down little old ladies rushing to come in to Cassie's anymore. ;-)
There's another place called Public near The Roxbury Motel that is more friendly and serves food just as well. If you don't have reservations though they can look at you a little weird but I think that's just them being nervous about trying to seat you and expecting the reservations to come in soon after lol. read more
