Had a nice late lunch here on our recent trip. (Note that they are often not open at dinner time.) we were told that the food and service were good and that they had a few unusual local ingredients incorporated into their menu. For this reason, I decided to go with an Arnold Bennet skillet that included smoked trout. If you at all like the thought of lox and eggs, then you definitely need to try this one. It also had Parmesan, chives, and crème fraiche mixed in. The taste of this combination on a piece of toast was delicious! And something I would happily enjoy again and at reasonable prices. Plus, it was enough food that I finished it for breakfast the next morning. The seating area looks and feels like a typical NY diner. Our waitress was quick and efficient and the coffee was good and fresh. My family did an excursion with Rail Explorers just a little ways up the street and we needed a place to refuel before our next stop. I heard good things about the diner and its popularity - probably due to the convenient location and it seemed to be one of the few eateries (and largest one) nearby. We got there at almost 2 pm on a Friday and they still had a waitlist... 30 minutes they said. They have a large parking lot; the front fills up fast but I do believe I caught a glimpse of the back. She said we could also order from the food truck outside by the patio seating. The only difference would be there's no table service there. I ended up trying that route since we have younger kids and we told them to take our name off the list. There was a line by the food truck too but we eventually got there. There was only one person taking orders (and despite the line, he was patient with all of my questions. They seem knowledgeable about ingredients. Having said that, my youngest has food allergies and the only thing he could have is the cheesy grits. Good thing we brought him his own food. Also not the person taking orders also brings in the bucket of dirty dishes and restocks, so when he's doing that, no one is taking orders. We're allium-free vegetarians and ordered: BUTTERMILK PANCAKES: This came with 5 4-inch pancakes, a decent amount of fresh blueberries and strawberries, two butters, and a small container of syrup. Not bad at all! They weren't the fluffiest but I enjoyed the slightly crisp outside. The bees also enjoyed the syrup that remained in the cup so I entertained myself by watching them. On that note: if you have a bee sting allergy, beware if you're outside and order something sweet. Because the outside tables aren't serviced, you may need to wipe them down. AVOCADO TOAST: sliced avocado on a thick slice of sourdough and pea shoots with a medium hard boiled egg. It comes with pesto but we asked to have it taken out. There's no other spread on it but still tasted good. Plus a side of Phoenicia potatoes, which are deep fried and salted. A pretty good savory option! CHEESE GRITS: standard cheese grits but I think it's just cheese and grits. The amount of cheese in your grits determines the amount of sodium in your bite. I got this for my kid with food allergies... he didn't like them but the adults finished it. MAC AND CHEESE: a generous amount in a bowl. Not sure why my kid didn't eat more than a few bites but I ate some and it tasted good. She finished it later when she was hungry enough so maybe she was just feeling peckish at the time. FRESH SQUEEZED JUICE: Got this in both orange and grapefruit. Truly fresh squeezed. It's got pulp and my grapefruit had a good amount of seeds. But they tasted good! My kids are sometimes not into fresh squeezed but the orange juice was the perfect amount of sweet and they finished it while we were waiting for food. COFFEE: coffee is coffee... but it took forever to come out. In fact, my husband had to take my phone with the receipt to the food truck again to ask about it (after I already asked other people few times) when we were almost done with our food. According to the guy, they're supposed to call out your name for coffee but it never happened. One of my kids wanted lemonade but they were out at the time. After paying, you give them your name and they'll call you when someone brings out your order from the main building. It took a while but everyone else was also waiting. There is a self service station nearby with utensils and napkins but it was half empty. If that's the case, note there's another similar station through the side doors into the diner. No table service means just that. Overall, it was a good trip? Sitting outside, you get an up close feel of nature in the form of insects inspecting your food but you also get to see the view better... including if it rains. Unless you're in the covered section, only a few tables have an umbrella. Not much service where we were but the food was good. No issues with cross contamination or getting ingredients we don't eat. All that in mind, a solid place for sustenance but they seem to be busy a lot so expect slower service. If you're in a hurry, I spotted a strip a little further down with smaller places to eat at. I believe that it is always appropriate to express both the good and the bad, and so my review offers a little of both. We had just finished our 8 mile excursion at Rail Explorers last Friday and could not wait to get a bite to eat. We worked up quite an appetite, but did not mind that there was a line out the door. It would be worth it. We were told 20 minutes and so proceeded to wait patiently, just like everyone else. 20 minutes came and went and I was starting to feel my blood sugar plummet. We decided to wait in the bar area where I thought I could at least get started with one of their specialized breakfast drinks, but no one working behind the bar even asked if I wanted anything. I was ready to pay and tip appropriately, but it was like I wasn't even there. They were busy, so I chalked it up to that and waited until we were seated to order something to drink. We were seated at 40 minutes of waiting. Not a problem for me because I knew they were busy. We had agreed to a counter spot, but after waiting beyond the 20 minutes we were told, it would have been nice to have a two person booth. Our server, Kate, was very friendly and took our drink orders immediately. As our drinks arrived, we were joined to our right at the counter by a couple that had been on our excursion. There was another couple to our left, that were into their meals already and enjoying their food. We ordered our food and enjoyed the bustle of the diner. There were so many delights on the menu, but I was like...I just worked my butt off, I'm going to try something decadent and new. I ordered the jalepeno popper hash-browns. A little out of my comfort zone, but I knew they would be good. Within a few minutes our fellow excursion couple received their food. No big deal, right? Sometimes that happens. We waited...and waited. Coffee was refilled and Kate came over to ask if we wanted more juice. I'm thinking, yes! The food should be coming out soon. I watched the kitchen counter like a hawk...my stomach was now growling. The people to our left had left and a new couple arrived, the people from our excursion were finishing up their meal. Yes, that's right, the people that arrived after us were finishing up and we had still not been served. Kate, as sweet as she was, did not come back to reassure us that the food was coming, or notify us of any issues with the preparation of our food. We didn't order anything that would need 40 minutes to cook, so it was odd. Our excursion people left, the new people ordered and we were finally presented with our food. Kate did offer a "sorry about the wait". I smiled as I was just happy to finally have food presented. The people to our left received their food immediately after ours came, so the kitchen was working efficiently for everyone around us. My food was very good. It was an odd choice for me, but the jalepeno popper was decadent and Just what I needed after being there for about an hour and a half total. My fiancé's food....not so much, but I'm sure you will hear from him. All I have to say about his food is that he never complains....ever, but this time, I could practically see the steam coming out of his ears, as it was most certainly not coming off of his plate. He ordered a griddle meal, and oddly enough, it came out cold, lackluster and after the wait we had, it pretty much was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm thinking that something happened with my meal which caused his meal to have to sit under the lights for 30 minutes....regardless, we should not have been served well after the people who sat down beside us were done and on their way out the door and a griddle meal should be so hot that you have to be careful not to burn yourself. Am I guilty of not expressing how I felt that day and instead choosing to write this review. Yes. But we were annoyed and looking at a 2 hour plus drive into the city and mainly just wanted to get out of there. Saving grace- sweet and friendly Kate and your adorable logo. Came here because of Severance and so glad to have checked it out! Definitely experienced the old school diner vibe once we pulled up and walked in. Our server was attentive, provided good recommendations, and checked in at appropriate times. The 3500 was a good sampler of breakfast items like the buttermilk pancake, French toast, bacon and sausage. The pan fried trout was excellent. Both dishes were reasonably portioned. Took off a star honestly only because of the restrooms. I get that it gets busy, but it just wasn't the best feeling after the meal to walk in and wash my hands in there. This diner definitely gets packed, but thankfully, the wait usually isn't too long! The milkshakes were a little disappointing--they mostly tasted like melted ice cream rather than an actual milkshake. The cinnamon roll was the same one I had back in March, but unfortunately, the texture wasn't as soft this time. It was noticeably harder, although it was still generously covered in frosting like before. The scrambled eggs were soft and cooked well, but the biscuits and gravy were pretty heavy. The potatoes, however, were amazing! They were nice and crispy, which I really enjoyed. My daughter really enjoyed her meal. She ordered the French toast, sausage, bacon, pancakes, and eggs, and she was very happy with everything. Deemed a Catskill staple, the experience at the Phonecia was largely underwhelming but one I would be willing to give another shot in the future. At peak season and dinner time on a Saturday, the wait time (30 minutes) was nothing outrageous or out of the ordinary of what to be expected. The hostess communicated well and informed us where we were in line as time continued to pass. Once seated, it took quite awhile to be acknowledged by our waitress, which left us wondering if we had potentially been overlooked or forgotten. When she arrived, she was largely impersonal and cold. Unfortunately by the time our orders were taken, 4+ menu items were no longer available. We ordered the vegetarian Reuben, the chopped cheese, and a side of mac and cheese (unfortunately not pictured because we were starving) all of which were pretty mediocre (although generous portions). The Reuben was sour (with beets in lieu of protein for the veggie menu item) and the chopped cheese lacking the basil, thai chili and shallots that were advertised (they were in there, but very scarce...). The mac and cheese was good but desperately needing salt which we were happy to add. In general, the atmosphere felt authentic and like a piece of Catskills history, ingredients locally sourced, and a unique menu with generous portions. Perfect place for our first meal in the Catskills. Place has been here for ages and I felt like I walked on to a movie set, a true classic. Staff could not have been nicer. I had a genuinely uncomfortable experience at Phoenicia Diner because of the repeated and completely unnecessary commentary from our waitress about what I chose to order and eat. It started when I ordered two orange juices. Instead of simply taking the order, our waitress responded, "You going to drink all that?" I found that incredibly off-putting. I'm an adult ordering and paying for my own breakfast--I don't need my server policing or commenting on how much I choose to drink. Then, when I asked if an omelet could come without the onions and cheese, she responded, "Okay, so make your own omelet." I clarified that I simply wanted the remaining two ingredients: ham and peppers. Again, the interaction felt needlessly judgmental over an extremely basic modification. Finally, I left most of the accompanying arugula salad because I don't particularly like arugula. When she came back around, she felt the need to comment yet again: "You're not going to finish that?" At that point, it was a pattern. Once would have been an awkward comment; three separate remarks about how much I ordered, how I wanted my food prepared, and how much I ate made me feel like my eating habits were being monitored throughout breakfast. A server's job is to take an order and provide hospitality, not provide unsolicited commentary on a customer's appetite or food choices. People can also have all kinds of personal, dietary, or medical reasons for what and how much they eat, none of which are a server's business. The food itself may be perfectly fine, but I left feeling scrutinized rather than welcomed. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, I expected much more professional and gracious service. When I imagine a classic American diner, this is what I picture. You must get the buttermilk pancakes (comes with 5 pancakes, berries, and housemade syrup) and the breakfast burrito. Those were the highlights of the meal. Orange juice is also great, but I'm not sure it's worth the $7 for a cup. We also got the chicken pot pie which has really tender chicken and a delicious slightly salty biscuit. The jalapeño cheddar hashbrowns do taste like a jalapeno popper on the inside, but the crispy fried layer of cheese doubled with the heavy cream cheese filling was a lot. Came here for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon and we were worried that there would be a wait but thankfully we got seated right away. The moment I stepped foot in the diner, I was instantly enveloped in a nostalgic and cozy atmosphere. It was full of charm with all the decorations. Definitely what you would picture in those classic movies/shows. Food was 10/10!! I ordered the buttermilk pancakes which is what they are most famous for and for good reason too! Fluffy and light and amazing portions (5 big pancakes with mixed berries)! The pancakes were so good that we bought a bag of pancake mix to take home. My sister ordered the eggs any way and she loved everything that came with it: eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, potatoes, and toast. Everything on the menu looked absolutely delicious and it was hard to decide what to order. They have weekly specials as well. This was the BEST diner I've been to in a long time. My boyfriend and I are from NJ and drive up to Belleayre for weekend ski trips, and we stopped in on our first morning. From the second we walked in, we were greeted with such a warm welcome. The inside has classic, cozy diner vibes -- booths, counter seating, and even a separate bar area. Our first visit, we ordered over-easy eggs, potatoes, bacon, and sourdough toast. Everything was cooked perfectly, and you could genuinely taste the quality of the ingredients. We loved it so much that we came back the next morning. We arrived right at opening and were treated to warm cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven with homemade cream cheese frosting. We shared one, but I could've easily eaten the whole tray -- soft and doughy inside, slightly crisp outside, and generously frosted. I ordered the "3500" (pancake, French toast, bacon, sausage, and egg), and again, everything was spot on. My boyfriend happily went for another round of eggs, potatoes, and bacon. On our way out, I noticed a Pressed Penny machine. I'm a HUGE collector but didn't have change. When I asked, the waitress went out of her way to find the shiniest pennies so I could make the best ones. It absolutely made my day. If we were locals, we'd be here all the time. It had been a while since I'd eaten at Phoenicia Diner (last was outside, during the pandemic) so I was happy to go on our most recent Woodstock getaway. Eating inside is so much more pleasant. No wait for a table on a Friday late morning. I started with a bloody Mary and a vanilla latte. The flavor of the bloody was really good, but I do wish it was a little bit less chunky while drinking it. The vanilla latte was just OK. We ordered a table pancakes, because you have to when you're here - pancakes are a highlight. We chose buttermilk, but I can curious about the buckwheat. They come with real maple syrup, which is everything to me... so important for me to enjoy my pancakes to the fullest. I was being really indecisive, and I just could not decide what to order. I finally selected Phoenicia Breakfast which came with beans tomatoes sausage, two eggs, sausage and I upgraded to an English muffin. Everything on my plate was delicious, but the food was on the cold end of lukewarm. The beans were actually not warm at all, but the flavor was very good. The English muffin was really tasty for what it was, but it did not remind me of an English muffin. It was incredibly dense, almost more like a crumpet. I did appreciate that it was very generously buttered There's a few things that could've improved, but overall it is an excellent meal and a really fun place to visit. I feel like this place is an icon and it's definitely worth it! We went here because hello, it's a staple of New York mixed with the fact that it was recently featured in a very famous Apple TV television show!!! I would say be prepared to wait because this place is popular. But the staff is used to that! You can drink at the bar while you wait and during nice weather times they have outside seating. The food was good. My favorite thing was the pancakes. We heard that they were amazing and they were. They are thick and fluffy but crispy at the same time! The long awaited Phoenicia Diner experience has finally arrived. There are no reservations, got here around 11 am on a Saturday morning was told an hour wait, which wound up being about an hour and a half. They give you a random number on a vintage key chain. It's an old school feel, with lots of outdoor decor. While we waited we went to the bar section and got fall inspire Aperol spritz's that came with apple cider as well as cappuccinos. The cappuccino was delectable. This helped pass the time. The wait was definately worth it. PANCAKES 10/10. We got the buttermilk pancakes which were fluffy, tasty, and epic! Also got a farmer's skillet with over easy eggs and added bacon. The bacon was some of the best bacon I have ever tried. We also got the chocolate chip cookies to go! This diner is quite a popular destination in the area. It was packed with people and by the time we left, cars had started to park along the highway shoulder because the parking lot was full. You can choose to order from their pick up station and eat outside or wait for a table or bar seating indoors. They initially told us the wait for two would be 25 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 15. I ordered a non-alcoholic mocktail and they served it to me with alcohol. I am pregnant, so this was very distressing, but given people's alcohol sensitivities these days, this is a pretty egregious mistake in general. When I alerted our waitress, there was also no apology or attempt to make things right, so this soured my whole experience of the place. To eat, I had the jalapeño popper hash browns. This was a unique dish that I was excited to try. The hash browns were crispy on top, with cream cheese and stringy potatoes underneath. The dish came with eggs and roasted tomato. The hash brown mix was way too salty so that made the dish hard to eat, but I think it'd be tasty had that not been the case. I also got the pancakes, which were fluffy and served with fresh blueberries and strawberries. They actually paired pretty nicely with the hash brown cream cheese, for a sweet and savory combination. My husband got the arnold bennett skillet and enjoyed it. They have a great menu, so I can see why this place attracts a crowd. However, the issue with the alcohol was unacceptable. read more

This was recommended to us by a friend as the perfect way to start our weekend in the Catskills and I am so happy we listened to her. On a Friday afternoon we got a table right away (which was honestly a surprise because the parking lot was completely packed). This feels like a perfect old school diner with booths, counter seating, tables, and menus along the wall. And then you realize that they have a full bar and there is trout listed on the menu at least 4 times. I love a little old and a little new. We got drip coffees (perfectly hot and strong) and a couple cocktails to properly kick off vaca. My Bloody Mary might have been the best Bloody Mary I've ever had. It was so good! I am craving another just typing this review. I got the Farmer's Skillet with scrambled eggs, which is some variation of my usual at a dinner and loved every bite. I also tried a bite of The Mitchell (a tuna fish sandwich) and agreed it was fantastic. Tunafish should always have pickled in it in my opinion! A great lunch and a great stop. read more

It's a Catskill relic, so it was only right that we went! What a cute little diner!!! We got there right when it opened because its first come, first serve. That was a power move on our part. It started to get packed quickly! The food was good! I got the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were nice and buttery. So soft. The gravy was great, too. It was lacking a TAD bit of flavor. I wish the sausage pieces were a little larger, too. The pancakes, which they are known for, were good! They were soft and pillowy. Delish. The service was good. I've always heard from folks in surrounding towns, in not surrounding towns, from people all across the internet even, that Phoenicia Diner is AMAZING and a must-go if in the area. I never knew why or if they had any stand out food items other than their pancakes, but we happened to be in the area and made it a point to try -- but I definitely was left disappointed. Pros: - This is such a unique diner menu, where they're not just serving your average wraps and diner plates. This definitely is the only diner that I've seen have a burger mac and cheese burrito and the only diner where the staff has recommended the shrimp and grits to me (because who goes to diners for seafood?) - Outside patio area is extremely cute and perfect for those in the area with pets! Cons: - I just truly didn't think the food was that great. The shrimp and grits were tasty but nothing special, the burger mac burrito fell apart immediately after receiving it making it super hard to eat. The mac and cheese itself was creamy but lacked flavor and the onion rings were just filled with oil. All the food just seemed extremely heavy and rich. Was this our fault since we didn't get the pancakes? Possibly. But I had such high hopes when the staff raved about these items prior to ordering that it just couldn't meet these high expectations. The decor and vibe in there is of a retro diner, but the food is much more elevated than a typical diner. We stopped in around 2:30pm, after the breakfast/brunch rush and were seated right away. Started with coffees, fresh squeezed OJ, and a giant cookie. I had the jalapeno popper stuff hashbrowns and my husband had the corned beef skillet. Both were unbelievably good, made with fresh ingredients (including house cured corned beef). We went the breakfast route for this meal, but the lunch options around us looked fantastic as well. Service was kind and attentive. We will not hesitate to return next time we're in the area. We may even drive out of the way for it. read more

Coziest spot in the catskills to get some damn good pancakes. We love this spot from the pancakes to the lunch to the drinks and the fresh squeezed OJ. the maple syrup is NY maple syrup and wow it makes all the difference. Can't say enough good stuff about the staff too. They sell the pancake mix so you know I got one to take home too. And vegan pancakes too!!! So don't be shy there's something for everyone. read more

I do like this spot but I do think it is very overhyped and over priced as a result. The atmosphere is true retro diner vibes and the service was lovely despite the fact its always bustling. We shared the tortilla soup, chicken pot pie, and the jalapeño popper hash. Soup was ok. The chicken pot pie/biscuit dish was super rich, filling and hearty. The star of the show was definitely the jalapeño popper hash- so much carby goodness. Nothing was bad but given it has such a mighty reputation, I always expect my socks to be knocked off and it was just an average brunch/lunch in my opinion! read more

Stop by this popular spot after 2 hrs on railsroad track. Diner is so nice, clean and welcome. They are so busy I think from local and tourist. We ended up sat at the bar because no line on that, table waiting 15 mins. Our service is so welcome and polite. I got full Phoenicia breakfast, my man got meatloaf with both came in big plates. 1 & 1/2...Nah...Like surely countless others I was drawn in here by it's updated classic diner exterior and amazingly scenic location on the curb of the road on a gorgeous stretch of Rt 28 in the Catskills, along with the jammed packed parking lot on a glorious September late morning one Friday. I'd also heard and read about this place here and there through the years in the context of talking with NYC friends or reading NYC periodicals about visits and moves up into the Catskills that I knew what I was walking into, a longtime local institution purchased and spiffed up and given the hipster treatment by some of many NYC transplants that have flooded into the region in the last decade plus, a trend which was turbo-charged during the pandemic and it's aftermath. Unfortunately what I experienced wound up being what I consider to be a worse case scenario when it comes to Upstate gentrification. I had been craving a classic upstate diner breakfast of corned beef hash so I sidled up to the lone available seat at the packed counter in the still classic looking albeit slightly Memphis-Milanoified dining room, scanned the menu and selected the corned-beef skillet. What arrived was decidedly not hash but an extremely half-assed alternative, which surely ranked as one of the worst breakfast's I can remember having anytime recently and likely also one of the worst meals I've had this year. Rather than properly cooked hash it was a random assortment chewy fatty grizzly chopped up scraps of corned beef carelessly and joylessly tossed with random peppers onions, eggs poached as requested and extremely undercooked cubes of potatoes, along with some random mystery flavors I was unable to recognize other than the fact that they were extremely prominent and very unpleasant. I probably made it through about 1/4 of the gross plate before calling it a day and requesting a check. As if the horrible meal wasn't enough to make me loath this place, it's important to note that this nasty plate of thoughtless slop, alongside the rest of the menu was priced at a Manhattan scale of $18, surely out of the budget range of most of the actual longtime residents the community and catering primarily to wealthy NYC transplants and visitors and further reinforcing and exacerbating the affordability crisis that has resulted for longtime residents as a result of these trends. There's still a great many longtime beloved local diners and hole in the wall greasy spoons across the region that not only support longtime residents and local traditions but also surely have much much better food, it's surely our duty, especially for us visiting Citiots to patronize those establishments and especially avoid this one like the plague. Horrible overpriced food with the worst of NYC pretentious and rude service and elitism combined, truly the worst of all worlds. read more

Absolutely loved this gem! The vibes of this diner are immaculate. I love the old school feel about this place. Makes it feel like a little slice of home! We sat at the counter and had wonderful service. My husband had the Wittenberg bagel with trout and said the flavors were awesome. I had the house made granola with yogurt and it was the perfect light breakfast I was looking for. We were in and out in no time, which is just what we wanted. A very classic diner right outside Woodstock. Stopped in for a comfort breakfast with a group and it was full within 30 min of opening! I went with the basic egg, sausage and potatoes and loved that they had a gluten free toast option. However, was pretty disappointed by the potatoes and thought the meal was pretty bland! They had food for all dietary restrictions which was appreciated but I didn't get to try the gluten free pancakes this time. Overpriced in my opinion and can't say it was worth the price. read more

I had so much about the famous Phoenicia Diner, so we had to visit! The food and menu is pretty standard American diner fare. I really liked that they had a good mocktail selection. When you go upstate, this is the place to be. It's a MESS of a DISASTER of a parking lot to get in but once you do, there's tons of space inside and out. Great menu with lots of options for everyone. Keep in mind that it is BUSY. Like REALLY BUSY. So be patient, expect to wait. Everything here is great. read more
