We eat a lot of Cantonese food and throughout all of our years of donating our paychecks to Cache Creek Casino we have never dined at Chang Shou. Why? Cantonese Snobbery and other good non-Chinese CCC restaurants to choose from like the Buffet, the Sports Bar, the Deli with its great Garlic Fries, and the fast food Mexican Restaurant with its decent street tacos. So we dined for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised. They ask you if you want tea or water and we opted for the not-free, they don't tell you, Hot Tea. Ugh! Not a good start. We perused the fairly extensive menu and opted for: - Peking Porklets - Salted Fish and Minced Chicken Fried Rice - Sautéed Seafood with Asparagus - Dry Fried Beef Chow Fun All the dishes were tasty, hot, and decently priced. Enough food for four people. We also asked about the lobster and crab and both were priced over a Benjamin Franklin, next time or if we hit a jackpot... Overall, we'd go back. One of my favorite restaurants at the Casino. Food is fresh, hot, and tasty. I saw hanging ducks at the Hanging Duck Noodle Station, and found that to be cool. I also got visual tips on how to crimp potsticker edges from a sous chef who was preparing them in bulk. Had a good dining experience but wasn't a fan of staff hovering at my booth during the meal. I guess it was their break or they just didn't have customers at the moment. A PANCIT FOR ONCE I LIKED I arrived at Cache Creek Casino on Juneteenth via the bus from Union City. Before gambling I needed something to eat as I took the bus from Union City at 11:45 AM and arrived at Cache Creek Casino past 3:00 PM. I looked at certain restaurants at Cache Creek Casino. Not wasting too much of my time I ended up at Chang Shou. One item that stood out was beef pancit. As a Filipino I never liked pancit because the noodles tasted too dry. Since I came to Cache Creek Casino to gamble I decided "to roll the dice" and order beef pancit. For appetizers I ordered har gow. For the har gow there are two dipping sauces. One of sauces was slightly spicy. The har gow was a nice, light appetizer to start off. The har gow was tasty in either the spicy or regular dipping sauces. The next dish was the beef pancit. Because of not liking pancit I set low expectations. From the appearance the beef pancit didn't look dry because was a shine on the noodles. When took a bite of the beef pancit the noodles were moist as they were soaking in some gravy. I didn't have to relive of eating dry pancit at Chang Shou. Also having beef in the pancit was different than I'm used to because I've eaten only eaten pancit with chicken. As a Filipino who hates pancit the beef pancit at Chang Shou is the best pancit I've ever eaten. I don't know when I will go to Chang Shou anytime soon. I am beyond disappointed with the dining options at Cache Creek. While the estate is beautiful, the restaurants--specifically Chang Shou--is a total disgrace to the property's reputation. I ordered the duck wonton noodles, and it was easily the worst bowl of noodles I've ever been served. We ordered honey walnut shrimp, pad thai, fried rice and duck. Surprisingly the dishes came to our table rather quick! My favorite were the walnut shrimp, and everything else was good.. EXCEPT for the pad Thai.. I took a bite into the chicken and realized that it was undercooked. We let the server know that all of the chicken that was in the pad Thai were undercooked. That plate of pad Thai was also not flavorful.. very plain. The manager came back with a newly cooked pad Thai (waaay more flavor & cooked chicken), apologized & let us know they took it off the bill for us.. and even offered us dessert! The food at restaurants in Cache Creek is surprisingly good and the same can be said for service. I found the front desk staff and the wait staff at Chang's, particularly at the counter to be quite rude. Here are a few of the specific details related to my experience today: - front desk receptionist was rude; did not greet me cordially; pointed to the "wait here" sign and told me to wait a few minutes - got tired of waiting so I sat at the counter and was greeted by a surly helper who was replaced by yet another helper who was even more miserable - the dish I ordered was lukewarm, otherwise good, although the helper essentially slid the plate toward me along with the bowl of rice - I didn't receive a customary 'thank you' when I paid my tab It wasn't a particularly busy day at this restaurant, so I don't know what issue may have been. I certainly didn't give any of the help a hard time. I picked up a "ghetto" vibe from most of the staff and will never dine here again. I've dined here previously and every prior visit was uneventful. I hope management either replaces or train their staff to behave (conduct business) in a more professional manager. Patrons spend a lot of money indulging in their vice and supporting employees that are paid to serve them. It all starts from the top down. The people I'm citing in this review all happen to be female. Maybe, they were having bad days or too self absorbed. I could get more personal about this but I won't go there and bring myself down to their strata. I didn't realize that there was a good Chinese restaurant right inside Cache Creek Casino. We had a 6 pm sit-down reservation and we were called right away at that time. Our server, Saule, walked us to our table and took our orders. We were a party of 4 and decided to order a la carte so that everybody could share. There are so many choices but we ended up getting the following: Spring Roll, Pot Stickers, Shrimp Fried Rice, Thai Salad1 Beef, Pancit, Thai Crispy Chicken, SN Pale Ale, Tea Green and Eggplant. Since we ordered 8 items, we thought that we had to wait for the food to come to our table. However, within 10 mins, some of our menu started coming. Within another 10 mins, all items are served. Their service was fast. Saule had been a good server and she made sure that our orders were correct. The eggplant was delicious and not soggy. It's firm and cut at the right size. The pot sticker and spring roll are perfect and everybody had a portion to enjoy. The Thai salad is highly recommendable. The Thai crispy chicken is crispy outside and tender inside. We thought we would take home some leftovers but all of them were so good that we finished them. Both our sons have birthdays in March as well as I do. As a treat, my husband and I treated them to Cache Creek since they weren't members of any casino. Fortunately, the wait was only 15 minutes. I was happy to see a good variety of comfort food offered especially Dim Sum and Congee. My husband is white and enjoys pot stickers. Our waitress was Flavia and an Asian gentleman was bussing the tables. Both of them were kind and attentive to our needs. The plates we ordered and found very tasty were: Shumai Siu Bad Pot Stickers Pai Gow Congee Kung Pao Chicken Chicken Fried Rice Special Fried Rice I live in Vallejo and don't often have the opportunity to eat good Chinese food. I ordered the pad Thai noodle, initially the duck egg roll - but they were out of this option. I got the abalone and dumping as a substitute. The pad Thai was visually composed well, texture was good, but the flavor was very very tart close to being sour - this was without me squeezing the limes. As for the abalone dumping - there was no abalone inside or out. Super over priced what this is. My husband and I saw this restaurant while walking around the casino and when we checked in we were told the wait was going to be awhile so a few weeks later we came back and attempted to try this place out and we were seated right away. I never been here before but the place is beautiful inside. Today is the day, I had to do it. This is my second time ever dining at Cache Creek Casino Resort. The last time I was here, I noticed how the decor here is pleasant. And look at what I have here, a Cantonese Roast Duck. Roasted in the Chef's special blend of spices. I had Peking Duck more than a few times. I'm very familiar with this cuisine. According to the Michelin Guide, both Peking Duck and Cantonese Duck are cooked in different types of ovens and vary in how they are processed, sliced, and consumed. In recent times, hybrids of the two have begun showing up on the market, with Peking Duck becoming more similar in style to Cantonese Duck. They say that the Peking Duck is more subtle in flavor, to Cantonese Duck. And I've had it both with, Bao Buns and Chun Bing or Crêpe. I can say that the Bao Buns are as relevant as the Crêpe. But to be honest, I don't see that much difference between a Peking Duck and Cantonese Duck. Some parts of the Western world might want to make it look like there is, but there isn't. A lot of times, I liked the Cantonese Duck more for its deep and complex flavor profile. Yeah, this isn't an Erewhon Strawberry Skin Glaze Smoothie. I liked how the Five Spice permeated through the Duck. It wasn't gamy at all. It was so succulent. My parents are avid Cache Creek visitors and they always enjoy dining and using their points here. Since COVID and even prior they are always busy and usually require a reservation or a long wait for dinner. We made a reservation earlier on in the day for 3. My parents enjoy their steamed sea bass or whatever fish they have available. I like their eggplant and I also got some dim sum. It's like every other Asian restaurant but they have a variety of different Asian cuisine here-- chinese, korean, Filipino, Japanese, you name it. They also have a bar and I ordered a cocktail, I don't remember what it was called but it definitely was strong and sometimes they get backed up and I got my appetizers prior to my cocktail. The food is consistently good but the service was lacking this last visit. We were told at 6 pm that there was no availability to be seated until 10 pm. It was Sunday evening so we did not expect it to be as busy. We stood there waiting for an hour to sit at the bar which is first come, first serve. Meanwhile, we saw several empty tables that sat empty for over an hour. Understaffing the issue? Seems to be as the kitchen was slammed and our Chang Shou rice came out after we had finished our other dishes. There was a sign: no take out but we watched as many customers carried their orders out. If we would have known, we could have ordered and taken the food back to our room. Finally seated at the bar as we had to wait for 2 seats to open up. The bar only had 5 chairs but had the space for at least 4 more. We were told that chairs had been broken but never replaced. Poor management! We are frequent customers. I will always make reservations no matter which day or time. Hopefully the poor service this last visit was just a one time glitch and not indicative of ongoing management issues. read more
