The old restaurant here, Tom Yum Thai, changed owners and now it's called Chad Thai. The owners are super nice and are actually from Thailand (including the chef). They have a larger menu, I think. The prices are still reasonable. They did renovate the space and it looks a lot classier than a "hole-in-the-wall." The nicest part was that they new to be careful with my fish allergies. After I placed the order, saying no fish sauce, they called me back and asked if Oyster Sauce was okay. My favorite is their cashew chicken and coconut rice. I got the Lad Na as well, and it was tasty, but it was really messy when I got it as take out because it leaked out of the bag. I wasn't the biggest fan of the sweet and sour chicken, but that's just my own personal preference--I was trying something new. Also, if you want something to be spicy, you have to ask for it very spicy because the medium spicy was not even a little spicy. Nonetheless, I will definitely be coming back here. A lot. read more

It's quite nondescript from the outside and the interior is spartan but the food is good and the flavours are derived from fresh ingredients. My party tried the spring rolls, pad Thai, cashew chicken another noodle dish (can't remember the name) with beef and green curry chicken with coconut rice. The green curry was very liquid and there was a lot left even after mixing it with the rice. The mild spice option is very mild, the medium is balanced and spicy has got a kick to it. read more

My favourite Thai place. I've tried others and always come back here appreciative of the delicious food and friendly service. I always get take-out so I don't know what eating in the restaurant would be like, but my order has plenty of food, enough for leftovers. My most-ordered dish is Penang curry with chicken. Came here for a birthday and all I can say is..YUM! The restaurant itself is kinda small, but it was clean and had a nice little bistro feel to it. I also can appreciate the fact that it was a full house so that was really comforting. Service was prompt and they were very good at catering to our party. Food looked AMAZING and I couldn't wait to try their green curry. For me, I test the Thai resto based on their Green curry and wow, I was impressed. I forgot the price I paid of the dish but it was very generously portioned and I even had leftovers for the next day! Super flavourful and lots of ingredients were had! My guy ordered the chicken cashews dish and it was tasty too but nothing in my eyes could compare to my green chicken curry. *drools* I didn't really pay attention of my friends dishes because I was so busy eating mine but everything looked super yums and that COCONUT RICE..OMGG. SO GOOD! Since it was a birthday, the servers and kitchen staff even plated us a huge serving of fresh fruit CARVED with beautiful flowers and shapes. This place has a casual and relaxing atmosphere food worthy of a 5 star restaurant! They had all my favourite tastes in their dishes: sweet, sour, spicy, creamy, savoury. All their dishes was super flavourful and they offer different levels of spicy-ness to suite your taste buds. We ordered a started of Laap, an appetizer salad of ground pork and and herbs on lettuce. Followed by the most delicious green curry I have ever tasted (and I have tried many) with a side of rice, and also pad ki mao, a rice noodle dish with veggies and beef. I noticed other people in the restaurant ordered a soup noodle dish with curry spices, which looked amazing too. When I come back, I will definitely try that dish! The staff was very friendly, attentive and quick! If you are ever in the Burnaby Heights area, definitely consider this place for lunch or dinner. read more

This place is great. It's clean and mellow inside, it looks pretty good for a small Thai place. The Chad Thai fresh rolls were super good, and they looked really good too presentation-wise. They were actually done fresh, right as I was waiting. The wrapper had a slight taste to it, but the inside was very flavorful. I got pad kee mao, and it was decently spicy at the hot level. The veggies tasted good, and there was plenty of protein. I didn't like the noodles as much though, and the basil didn't taste as nice as it has in other places. I'm going to echo Reena's comments that the people that worked there were very nice, and went out of the way to make me happy. They brought me water, the paper, and when they thought the order was taking too long to make they brought out a free spring roll. Top notch people, and overall a pretty nice meal. read more

I don't eat Thai food often, and I am by no means an expert in Thai food, but Chad Thai on Hastings has consistently delivered delicious food time and again. I always get the Tom Yum Noodle with Chicken . This dish consists of thin rice noodles in spicy and sour creamy soup with white mushrooms, coriander, lemongrass, red onions, kaffir limes leaves and galangal. It is my go to dish here, and I love it! I always have the spicy version and it really packs a punch! read more

I came here as I was looking to have some Tom Kha Gai and this was one that was in my neighborhood. I came with my partner and his mom and we ordered 5 dishes between the 3 of us. It's not a big place but it wasn't busy so we didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered the Tom Kha Gai soup, Pad Thai, the curry fish, yellow curry with chicken and the pork belly gai lan. Since I specifically came here for the soup, I base most of my judgement on that. I thought it was pretty tasty. I make it at home sometimes and this one tastes home made. I like they don't use MSG. I feel the food here is authentic and the menu has a great variety. The next best dish was the pork belly and gai lan. I haven't had that combination before and it was great. You can't go wrong with pork belly! This definitely makes my list of places I would frequent! read more

To keep it short and simple the best thai food in burnaby. I am about the sauce and every curry sauce there is tasty tasty tasty. The noodle dishes are exceptional. All the appetizers are delicious and well worth the price. The only dishes i do not recommend is the noodle soups they are too plain. This is also because i am a pho lover. I really did want to post this review simply because the restaurant it self is small and already so busy. But the owner and the workers are so nice and kind I just had to. Love the lunch special, great price for the portion size and dinner is just as good! Many Thai places I've tried don't make their curry spicy enough for me even when I ask for extra extra extra extra hot but this place extra hot satisfies my need to burn my stomach until I get hiccups :) Love that most dishes you can customize spice level from soup, curry, fried rice and noodles. Curry has great flavour and they have 5 different varieties where you can actually taste the difference between red, green, yellow, pangang. Never disappointed with their pad Thai, noodles are always made right and good portion of protein, never skimp on the meat! Would recommend coming here for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is nothing fancy but the food is most important! I wouldn't bring someone here for a romantic date but if they're a foodie craving Thai this is the go to place in Burnaby. read more

Chad Thai - another hidden gem in the Heights. I really appreciate small, family owned businesses because in most cases, the food would be top-notch. That is what it is at Chad Thai. Although the venue is extremely narrow with minimal seating, the staff are extremely welcoming and genuinely friendly. The food is on the better end of Thai food I've experienced. For example, when ordering a satay dish, you're not served multiple pieces of chicken. Rather, you're given one entire piece of chicken that accommodates the length of the skewer. Green curry with pork (my favourite) is robust and flavourful with coconut rice (served separately as much as I wish it was sold together). Prices here are comparable to other places in the Lower Mainland. You'll leave full and wanting more. The only bone I have to pick about this place is that upon entering, the smell reminded me of a hockey locker room (no offence!). read more

I went there for dinner with my husband. The place was packed but there was only one waitress. We were impressed by her friendliness and great service. She was very nice and never let our glasses get empty. My husband had Green curry and I had Sukho Thai noodle. Wow, totally impressed. Surprisingly, I wasn't using Yelp to find a place, and was just picking based on proximity and the fact that they were open and I love Thai food. I was with my Thai food-loving and connoisseur friend. She was also impressed. Very sweet staff, and the food is authentic. What a great place. The Tom Ka Gai was interesting. Very strong smell and flavour, and at first I was a little put off, but it was really quite good. Make sure to get it with coconut milk. We also had a curry, and despite what they tell you, a large rice is not necessary for 2! That was a lot of rice... wow. Anyhow, I quite enjoyed my meal and the staff here. I went here with my family for lunch. At first we didn't know what to expect as the place was quite small and not busy (not a good thing to see). But once the food came out, wow! They all looked appetizing and tasted great. I wanted to give 4 stars because of their decor/service, but I'll be frank and admit that I'm often more moved by food than anything else. Their curries were slightly sweeter than other curries I've had in the past, but I like it that way (if you are not a fan of slightly sweet, try something else). The prices for the desserts were slightly steep but I really enjoyed all of them. My favourite was the home-made coconut ice cream with palm seeds-- they were delish! Came here one day after finding out the other restaurant we wanted to try had a 1 hour wait! We couldn't wait that long so started to walk down the street and saw this little restaurant and thought we'd give it a go. Well, we were pleasantly surprised! It is owned and operated by authentic Thai people the chef is also Thai. Their lunch specials are very well priced and I will definitely be going back to try some of their other dishes. L2 Khao Gaeng (Panang Curry Beef with Rice) $8.99 3.5/5 - not too thick nor spicy. It could go a little spicier too when I asked for mild. Less beef than expected. There were a lot of peppers. -It comes with 4 pieces of wontons (mainly just deep-fried wonton skins) and a bowl of rice. The rice was pretty soft. rice cracker $3 - They sell some snacks by the cashier. They were pretty good with a hint of sweetness. Service - I called at 11:20am asking for take out. Was intending to go to Broken Rice yesterday night, but was turned away at the door because they were "fully booked" (with empty tables). But that's for another review. Pulled out Yelp and found this little gem half a block down. So glad Broken Rice turned us away! This homey little place had great food and service! Menu was authentic and food had the proper spice levels - we ordered medium and it definitely had a kick in it as you would expect from an authentic Thai restaurant. We ordered the som tam, pad Thai gai, Thai noodle soup (gway tiao) and a Thai iced tea. Everything was very flavorful and delicious. I was especially excited about the gway tiao, as most of the Thai restaurants either don't carry this extremely popular Thai street food item or they just don't do it justice. This really hit the spot - soup base tasted like it did in Thailand and the noodles were perfect. I just wish it had a wee bit more cilantro and fried garlic in it! But next time I'll remember to ask for more :D Overall this place definitely deserves repeat visits in my books. read more

Everything is clean though (cutlery, tables, chairs etc.) We ordered the deep friend prawn appy and I ordered the chicken Pad Siew. Pretty good - not too soggy and wasn't soaked in MSG or salt like most asian restaurants. For a tiny little restaurant I think it's pretty good. Serving size was fair as well. I was under the impression that if a menu item has an "S" beside it they would ask for spicy preference - I completely forgot to mention it and the server didn't ask so i was kind of disappointed that my dish wasn't spicy at all. read more

Ordered the Tom Yum Noodle lunch special and found it to be too cloyingly sweet and overly pungent with fish sauce and vinegar. I usually like my food aromatic, but this was just too much! It also bothered me that there were chunks of fibrous lemongrass and kaffir lime that I had to pick out. It's not like a Laksa or pho in the soup base at all - so be warned! I wish it would have had more coconut milk in the soup base. The thai iced tea was tasty! The price was good value, as the lunch special it included a salad appetizer for $7.99. I am a regular weekly customer here for the past year or so. I always order the pad thai and fried rice. I am only reviewing based on the take out service. I always order their HOT level for spiciness and 2 weeks ago they messed up my order. Both of my dishes were cooked as non spicy. There was zero chilli or spice in the dishes but I figured it was a one time mistake since I am a regular. Today, I ordered the pad thai in HOT and again there is zero spice in it. I was so upset that they messed up 2 times in a row. This is not based on the item not being spicy enough. THEY TOTALLY FORGOT TO PUT THE CHILLI IN! I called to inform them this time and they offered 10% discount. Thats probably about $1-$1.50 discount. NO THANKS I WILL NOT RETURN. I find that so unacceptable and poor customer service. read more

I always go to Thai Cafe down the next block but I came to Chad Thai to try something new. The service was...not bad but just super amazingly slow. I know the ladies who work there are very sweet, but the service was just so slow that I was beginning to get a little irritated. It took us about 5 minutes to sit down, another 15 to get the menu, etc..we were in there for about an hour before we got the food and they weren't even that busy? As soon as we go the food though everything was A-OK because it was pretty good. I got tom yum soup for the first time and i LOVED it! We also got a curry with fish (I think it was Bass?) and it was delicious. It literally melted in my mouth and it's all I'm getting when I'm here now. I didn't like it as much as Thai Cafe, I think I prefer the service there a bit better. But, I'll come back here for the fish + curry heh read more

What a pleasant surprise. From the exterior, I was expecting a bare bones place with a few tables but it's much larger and nicely decorated. The service was very good and the waiter was nice and patient, answering all of our questions. The Tom Yum Goon soup was spectacular, spicy and sweet with very nice flavours. The beef fried rice was tasty and the chicken satte was plump and juicy with a nice peanut sauce. The chicken green curry was delicate and so nice. They had a very nice chai iced tea too. Almost everything else was a home run. Don't dare order regular rice here when you can get this massive amount of fragrant coconut rice for a pittance. It's not subtle - it's a freaking coconut explosion which is the way I like it. Curry - freaking awesome. Pad Thai was good, more tamarind-y which I prefer. The menu is really cheap but we ruined it by ordering too many appetizers. You should easily walk in and out of here for $15.
