Stumbled upon an incredible hidden gem while roaming along south Granville street: Talay Thai Restaurant! It's a family-run establishment and I loved the bright yellow decor which gave an authentic vibe which immediately drew me in. Their Kaeng Khiew Waan (green curry) was a flavour explosion--spicy, fragrant, and perfectly balanced with the pillowy white rice. The Pad Thai with prawns hit all the right notes with its tamarind-infused deliciousness. I appreciate they use tamarind sauce as at other establishments use ketchup variation. And seriously, the Thai Tea was exactly what I needed (fresh and not too sweet). Big thank you for having alternative rice! We opted for brown rice for my dietary needs. Having the Pad Kee Mao right now for lunch. It is piping hot and the flavour is bang on. Thin rice noodle with ground beef, onion, bell peppers and basil stirfry. I also tasted kaffir lime leaves, needs to verified with the restaurant but I love it. I have been eating here for more than 6 years now and honestly, no other Thai place in town hits the spot like this place. We came here for dinner and it wasn't busy. We were able to get a table very quickly. Seats were spacious and roomy. We ordered the green papaya salad (mild), fried chicken wingettes, fried prawns, beef fried rice, and seafood pad Thai. The green papaya salad was really good -- savoury and not sour at all. The green papaya was crunchy. The fried chicken wings were crispy and so were the crispy prawns. The beef fried rice was very flavourful with basil and lemon grass flavour. The pad Thai had seafood that were cooked just right and not chewy at all. They used Tumeric sauce instead of ketchup sauce. **they don't have thai ice coffee anymore even though it's still on their menu. read more

This Thai place was on my to visit list for some time but I was never hungry each time I drove by! Therefore, I was glad when I had the opportunity to drop by for lunch when hunger set in. It's a very humble-looking place from the outside. You might not even notice it driving by. Inside though, it is decorated like a few small places I have seen in Bangkok. The service was friendly and prompt. It appeared that everyone working out front as well in the kitchen were Thai...a good sign when it comes to more authentically prepared dishes. I tried the green curry (kaeng khiew waan), spring rolls, and the green papaya salad. All were very good in terms of taste. One minor thing is that the serving sizes were not big. I was full mind you, just not stuffed. Overall, I would say that this is one of the better Thai restaurants in the area and on my recommended list. read more

Skip the Dishes So was suppose to be in Thailand, and of course due to COVID 19 the trip was cancelled. Why not order Thai food since I cant be there. There aren't any options in Richmond so ventured to Vancouver and Talay Thai. I ate here a long time ago and remember it was good, but that was dining in. We decided on a Tom Yum with Seafood, Pad Thai with Chicken and Calamari. When the food was delivered it was still hot..Marpole to Richmond pretty impressive. (Kudos to the Skip driver). Unpacked the food and smelled so good. The portions seemed small, but was enough food for two. Calamari - this was nice and crunchy, seasoned well and came with a sweet Thai chili sauce, just wish had more of it. Pad Thai - I'm not a big fan of Pad Thai in general because of the sweetness, but this has good flavour and was sweet but not overly. The noodles was cooked well and decent amount of chicken. Tom Yum with Seafood - it had the spicy and sour and was a bit salty. There were two prawns, one mussel, 2 small scallops..not a lot of seafood. This was just ok. This review is more of a 3.5/5 rather than a 4/5... The décor inside is very traditional and authentic to what you would expect to see in Thailand. From the looks of it, all the servers are Thai as well! Came here for lunch and all their dishes are well priced at $11. Didn't even want to finish it. Not worth $1, let alone $5. 2. Spring Rolls: 2/5. Crispy, yet the crunch wasn't very light. Appear to be homemade. Decent. Nothing to write about really. 3. Paid Thai: 3/5: Lots of flavour! Got this with prawns but it only came with 3 prawns. Kind of skimpy....easily shared between two people but will be more than enough for one person. 4. Green Curry: 4.5/5: This was easily their best dish. Lots of different flavours that came together really well. Food was actually really good compared to all the reviews I had read prior to my visit. We ordered a few dishes to share and I loved every single one of them. Food: - Pad Kee Mao - Penang Curry - Coconut Rice - Pad Thai - Tom Kha (I think that's how you spell it) - Fried Calarmari My favorite was definitely the curry and it went so well with the coconut rice. One issue that I had was the Pad Kee Mao. Normally this dish is made with wide rice noodle but they had made it with the same noodle as Pad Thai. It wasn't as good since I usually get it with wide rice noodle. Overall, highly recommend! read more

Just had the good old green curry with beef. It was tasty and had a reasonable portion. I always like the jasmine rice made by Thais. The restaurant was nice and quiet, making it a good place for simple working lunch. I will return to try other dishes soon. read more

I'm always on the lookout for Thai restaurants that I've never tried before so Talay Thai has been on my radar in case I ever found myself in the South Granville area. We showed up for lunch one weekday in early November and tried some of their lunch specials. The Kaeng Khiew Waan ($11) or Green Curry Chicken is one of my go-to dishes when I visit a Thai restaurant. Both lunch specials come with a freshly fried up crispy springroll filled with tightly wrapped on vermicelli noodles. My impression of the Pad Thai Prawns ($11) was very much like the green curry chicken... a bit basic and the flavours appeared to cater more to the western palate. There was nothing wrong with the food and it was a fair price for the somewhat smaller lunch size. But there was nothing here that would make me go out of my way to try their food. Very flavourful Thai on S Granville which make it perfect for a quick meal on the way to YVR airport or on the way back to Vancouver. We ordered the panang salmon, crispy rad na (or lad na if you don't like pronouncing your R's lol), pad kee mao w beef plus crispy spring rolls as an appetizer. Portions are not huge but decent size. The inside of the restaurant is simple cheerful and clean with some thoughtful decor of Thailand. During our meal I heard the beep beep of what appeared to be some of the takeout delivery apps. This is a good sign that the lazy click and order crowd dines here also. My hope is that with Covid that places like this can weather the storm. Definitely worthy of a return back visit! So it turns out there's a Thai restaurant in this part of town. Only one way to find out if it's good. Parking is available on Granville outside of the afternoon rush hours, as well as on the side streets. The interior looks like it was once a Japanese restaurant, with the thin walled booths, and a counter that looks suspiciously like it was once a sushi bar. In any case, the interior is nice and cozy. Staff were friendly, though the waitress needed a bit of flagging down. Pad Thai - nice mix of sauce and flavourings. Sweet and spicy. Quite good. Red beef curry - they use lychees here. Again, nice sweet flavour. Goes well with rice. Battered prawns - this is where the review falls apart. The prawn batter was so thick they looked like cheesies. One can get a better quality product at a mall food court. Knock 1 star off. My other complaint with this place is that the portions are a bit on the small side for the price. left hungry. The place is a decent choice, but I would also consider other places in the area. read more

NOT GOOD! I ordered the pork kra pao and i had to drive back because i thought they gave me chicken. When they check the food, they said this was pork but why was it not ground pork? Why is this place serving pork kra pao with pork slices? The pork was so tough and dry no flavour at all. I found 2 pieces of basil in the whole dish... And the dish doesn't even come with rice. Basically, there was almost nothing that made it a kra pao. Super disappointed had to drive to chad thai to make up for it. read more

What. Pad Thai was good. Great flavour. There was a dish in the menu right below the pad Thai , just with some veggies. Server recommended this and said it was spicy. Great, I thought. We keep coming back to this restaurant. They know us by our first name If you love or like Thai food, Talay Thai is the place to be....hands down. One time, they have to close the restaurant for few hours as they were serving some Thai diplomat and guest. We were requested to come back after few hours. Well, we did and it was worth it. We were asked if we would like to try other items that was not part of their menu and we gladly said yes. After downing these sample dishes, we were told these are exact dishes that was served to the previous guest earlier (Thai officials). I don't care less if it was leftover....it was good to the last drop. Therefore, due the sample dishes, we end ordering just 2 dishes instead of four from the menu and some take home that was given to us as well. i think this is geographically, the closest restaurant to my house, thus i have great expectations for this one. I have to say, its actually really good. i think their stirfries are the best. pad thai, fried rice, cashew chicken... but it doesnt matter because 99% of people order pad thais anyway. if u order to go, u better nail the timing, if u come in too early youre stuck waiting awkwardly right in front if the counter, trying not to make eye contact with the front lady. im sure she is nice but im only there for my food, no offense. read more

Unbelievably good! Truly authentic right down to the waitresses and the music. The decor was sparse but the food was delicious. I had a simple stir fry with green beans and lime leaves. Every mouth full was a taste explosion. The menu said "spicy" but it was not HOT. I could taste the flavours without the burn. Everything was fresh and expertly prepared. There was nothing on the menu for vegetarians but the waitress explained, the whole menu could be vegetarian. However, they do prepare most entrées using fish sauce (fine by me). My meal came complete with rice and a spring roll that had a smokey taste - yum. All for $10.....what a deal! read more

I had to come back to write a review for this Thai restaurant after a month since my first and last visit. My girlfriend and I ordered a take out on a Saturday evening. After arriving back home and unwrapped all the containers, I immediately realized how unauthentic this Thai restaurant is. As a Thai person, I'm honestly a bit embarrassing at how the restaurant managed to sell Thai food. The most striking part is that the ratings are both Yelp and Google reviews are very high. The three dishes we ordered that day were green curry, Som Tom (papaya salad), and Larb (pork salad). Again, it's incredible on how high the ratings are for this restaurant, because none of the dishes looked anywhere close to the Thai dishes I've had. The taste of the green curry was like a coconut soup. I barely tasted any of the actual green curry spice. On top of that, I felt very thirsty for the rest of the night, which implies the amount of MSG inside the food. The same story goes for Som Tum and Larb, it just lacks the key components to be called those Thai dishes. It would literally have sounded better if the dishes were called something else. Originally the chef from Urban Thai Bistro in downtown, the owner moved off and started her own place with a few family members, all originally from Thailand. Great flavors, all the Thai favorites, in an atmosphere you would find in casual restaurants in Thailand complete with local music, bright colors and fabrics. We had a Tom Yum, Tom Ka Gai, padthai and green chicken curry. The soups are cup sized for small. Plenty of delicious, creamy, spicy goodness to be had. Luckily, I found this place around my neighbourhood and those who left reviews on it. I never even noticed this restaurant at all and I always drive on 67th towards Granville! Shoot me please! When we got there, the lady greeted us and was friendly throughout the entire meal. Everything I ate, I posted it up already because there wasn't any pictures posted when I searched this restaurant except for the business name/sign. The spring rolls were very tasty! Chicken and pork satay was good! Tom Yum soup could've been better if they served it hot and more spicy. Green curry with beef was my fave! Stir fry was good but less salty was be better! Calamari is the best amongst the thai restaurants i've been to. Get it. Just the right amount of crisp and batter. I would take one star off for the very mediocre green curry, but everything else more than makes up for it. My favorite Thai spot in the city--now! Talay Thai is one of my favorite restaurants in the city in general. Very close to my home, affordable prices, and delicious Thai cuisine all make it the perfect lunch takeaway place for me! I used to frequent Baan Wasana in Kerrisdale, but it has since been closed after a small kitchen fire sometime in the summer of 2017. I wasn't too upset, however, since I found Talay Thai as a better replacement! The workers are always so kind and polite when dealing with their customers. The problem dining with a bunch of friends is always deciding where to go. John wants Asian food, Jane doesn't want to travel too far, Joe wants it cheap... you know what I'm talking about. Everyone has an opinion why we shouldn't go to a particular place but no one provides a solution. This was my predicament last night and thus ended up here. Talay thai is a small mom and pop operation in the south Granville area. The place is small with seating for 25 guests or so. It's not a fancy place but rather cozy with yellow walls and various gold statues of Thai deities at the counter. Despite being a Saturday evening, reservations weren't required for our group of 8. The servers (I think one was the owner) were friendly and quick to respond to our every need. I ordered the yellow chicken curry which turned out to be an excellent choice. The curry itself was flavorful with just the right level of spice (maybe a 4/10 for the average person) but the chicken was a little dry. I found it odd that the curries didn't include a bowl of rice. Who eats chicken curry alone?? Anyways, I ordered a bowl of coconut rice which complimented the curry well. I also ended getting a Thai Icedtea. Liquid goodness! Definitely worth a try. I have a bad habit of trying other people's food (with permission of course). I managed to try the green beef curry and the pad thai. The green curry was equally as delicious as my yellow one but the pad thai was disappointing. The latter was a soupy mess of noodles, bean sprout, chicken and nuts. This dish had so much potential but ended up tasting like wet ketchup noodles. Value-wise, Talay thai is just okay at $12 for a bowl of curry (+$2 for rice). It may be worth checking out if you're in the area but I wouldn't go too far out of my way. read more

On a recent trip to Vancouver, a couple of my friends wanted to grab dinner here since it was their favorite Thai restaurant in town. I'm always down for some quality Thai food, so I happily agreed. We showed up at around 7:30 PM on a Friday night, and every table was occupied. A lot of folks were grabbing takeout. We decided to wait. The staff were extremely friendly and let us take the four open bar seats while we waited, and promised that we'd get the first table that opened up. I also noticed that it was an all-female operation (not sure if that was just this night or every night), which was very cool. 15-20 minutes later, a table opened up. We ordered the four different curry options among us (red, yellow, green, and Panang), along with some rice. All the curries were extremely flavorful and made with very fresh meat and vegetables. The spice levels matched our expectations (and this is a group that can handle spice--we were split between "hot" and "very, very, hot" for our spice levels), so don't be too flippant about what you say! None of us had any issues with portion sizes, and we all left nicely full. read more

Spring rolls were hard and greasy (without much in them). we ordered a duck curry off the special menu, and a mixed seafood with peanut sauce on spinach (and some coconut rice). Both these dishes tasted ok, but there really was practically nothing in them. The curry had about one ounce of duck chopped in to tiny pieces, three pieces of green pepper, four lychees and a few small chunks of pineapple. The sauce was good though! Our mixed seafood dish had two shrimp, a couple of bits of squid, and a couple of tiny scallops. Peanut sauce was...ok. nothing was very hot when it arrived. Talay Thai has been around for a long time, and that already speaks volumes. There is a good variety of restaurants in this stretch of Granville and having a good place for Thai food is a bonus. I used to work near here so I have eaten at this place a fair amount. I don't work in the area anymore but when a former colleague and I wanted to meet for lunch this was the first place that came to mind. I had a green curry with beef and the lunch combos for $11 include rice and a veggie spring roll. In my experience the flavours are good and authentic. My friend had the Pad Thai with prawns and it looked good too (I've often ordered it myself). Like I said, it's been a while since my last meal at this place but did the portions get smaller? I've been meaning to try this place ever since they opened a few months ago, but thanks to my weird eating schedule, the fact that they close between lunch and dinner (on weekdays), plus a roommate who never wants Thai all conspired to keep me away. I finally walked in this evening and was greeted by a very friendly waitress and Thai soft rock on the sound system. So far so good. Since the afore mentioned roommate declined my invitation, I was dining alone. Unfortunately for me Talay seems to be exclusively a family style type of place. Not a big deal, I just got a whole order of chicken pad thai to myself. It was a little milder than I'm used to, but extremely flavourful, especially when complimented with the lime. If you want authentic Thai food, this is the spot to go. I should qualify that, a bit. It's not the only place to go for good Thai food, but it's one place that is as close as you get to eating real Thai food without hopping a jet to Bangkok. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, I have been to Thailand and eaten the real stuff, not just the stuff tourists get - although I did get some of that, as well.) I've tried many Thai restaurants in the Lower Mainland - some are so-so, some are pretty good, some are really good. Talay Thai fits the latter category. (If you don't want to come this far west, there are a couple of other Thai eateries in Burnaby that are also very good. See my other reviews about those ones.) We've been back more than a few occasions, so you know it's good. Anyone who's read my other Yelp reviews knows I have a bit of a fetish for matching beers of a particular country/culture with the food of that country/culture (since I'm not really a big wine drinker.) If you're an Italian, you better have Moretti or Peroni, or you won't get my business. Ditto, Thai. This place offers not only Tiger (a ubiquitous Asian beer available in most Asian eateries) but it also provides Singha, an actual Thai beer. Two thumbs up, just for that! It doesn't really matter what I've tried here, it's been really, really good: the satays and other appies, the curries, the stir-fries - it's all good. So is the service - very prompt, very friendly. The lady who owns the restaurant is Thai and also the main cook, that may explain why the food is so good.
