I'm usually obsessed with it at Thai Express. I also grabbed the Thai milk tea to drink. I thought their serving of it was quite good. The pad sew ew i didn't feel as great about. It felt kinda underseasoned. The noodles didn't seem to have the right amount of cook either. Maybe it was just a bad day but not a great first impression. Ok....how do I put this delicately.... The quality of the Pad Thai's were extremely poor....I'll explain why. The rice noodles were overcooked and stuck together, which could only mean one thing....they pre-cooked the noodles then refrigerated it then reheated it, and not fresh....oh and they don't know how to cook noodles. Stingy on the protein (beef and pork), and whatever protein there was it was extremely tough. The pork tasted and looked like a door mat and the prawns were not cut/detailed. Had a Thai craving and decided to check out Thai Basil. I ordered delivery which sometimes lowers the quality and can't speak on what the in restaurant experience is like. Spring Rolls - 7/10 They were good but not my favorite. I live for a good spring roll and they were just missing something. They also didn't have any carrot in them as described on their website. It was strictly cabbage with some vermicelli. The one pro was that they were not greasy which you often find with spring rolls. Pad Thai with Chicken - 7/10 I was pleasantly surprised to see two shrimp included in my chicken pad thai. I'm not sure if that was an error or how their orders come. The portion was large for lunch (enough for leftovers - which is always appreciated). There was nothing wrong but again, nothing extremely memorable either. Pad Sew Ew - 8/10 Super tasty but I'd say it's hard to go wrong with some egg noodles, veggies and protein. I wasn't a fan of the side salad that came with the orders. The flavor of the dressing wasn't too my liking - but i think that's just a personal preference. The veggies seemed clean and fresh. read more

I grew up in Thailand and I find most of the thai restaurant in this city "fancify" the food and ambience so much, but none of those in that basil. This place provides average service, street foodish/minimal ambience, and good portion, which is what I look for in a authentic thai restaurant. we ordered tom ga kai. This is tom yum with evaporated milk, and we loved it! there were lots of ingredients with different textures for you to enjoy: cubed chicken breast, mushroom, veggies etc. A soup that is perfect order for both summer and winter and anytime really :) Thai basil is known for their curries within my friend circle haha. We ordered their weekly special: keang phed saparod ped. Think red curry with pineapple with duck. An interesting combination, in my opinion, but it worked out ok. Would want to try their massaman next. for dessert, I got mango sticky rice. the sticky rice is a bit over cooked (mushy) and they were a bit stingy on the coconut milk. the mango was stringy. but overall a solid mango sticky rice because honestly you cannot go wrong with this dish. read more

Took my partner there for dinner. Am in a wheelchair and asked for a table for two, waitress went and talked to another employee who was replying to her quite sharply and animated. Waitress then came back to us and said that unfortunately the cash register wasn't working properly and we wouldn't be able to be seated. the restaurant had no one at any of the tables, they were not cordoned off, and the entire time this was going on, people were coming in to pick up their take out orders And yet the entire time the cash register seemed to work just fine every time someone picked up their order. after going there several times per week, they will never get another dollar from me ever again. read more

I was just walking around and decided to pop by here to grab lunch since their Green Curry Lunch Special seemed appealing. The restaurant itself is a small little place with very cute vintage decorations like mail boxes and a cute bike. The food was OK, it wasn't too flavourful and there was hardly any spiciness. For a family birthday dinner, Thai was the birthday girl's choice. We picked up an assortment of items for dinner -- each of us from the family chose one thing we typically like from other Thai places.... Panang Curry, Cashew with Chicken, Pineapple Fried Rice, and Pad Thai. They were all decent, but surprisingly, not as flavourful as other places. I've even had the Panang Curry from another Thai Basil location (Kits), and it seemed much more intense in flavour and rich in colour. Not sure why! I'm a little shocked at the other reviews of this location of Thai Basil! This is my first visit to the West End location. (I'm a fan of their Kitsilano location.) While I'll agree with other reviews that the green curry is really more like a yellow in flavour (and in colour,) it's still pretty damn scrumptious. We found the heat/spice level okay, though the two guests sitting beside us seemed to find it challenging. We also ordered the Pad Kra Pao which was flavourful in its chilies, but could have used more basil. Overall, decent portion sizes. Other notes: Seating here is limited (4 small indoor tables and 2 outdoors, none seat more than 3-4 people) and there is metered parking around. read more

What I really appreciated was that they told us upfront that the panang curry cannot be made without shrimp paste and therefore can't be vegetarian. Chicken was dry and overcooked, even some inedible bits. Curry is watery and fillings a bit sparse. The restaurant itself is also starting to feel run down and dirty inside. Wow! This place was a pleasant surprise. If I had walked past it- I would of kept on walking..It looks like a dive hole in the wall. There are a few seats and decor consists of a Buddha picture and a few other assorted Thai decorations. They did NOT try to impress by the looks of this place- BUT looks can be deceiving. I only found out about this place, because of Yelp. I had searched Thai and found this place to be inexpensive, with a 4/5 star rating. I had wanted to check it out last week, but it was closed. Last night, I was on Davie around 8pm and it was open. I was with my BF and another friend. I told them I was buying. We sat down and checked out the menu. Food selection was really good, and prices were great. We decided what we wanted, and Vaughn went up to the high counter to order. It really didnt take too long before the order was ready. Total without beverages was 65$ which seemed a bit higher then I had expected. but whatever. Its Vancouver, and we were starving! We had 3 orders of chicken on a stick ( 4 skewers each) with peanut sauce, prawn wraps, some side rice, beef thai salad, pad thai, and some soup and another salad my BF ordered. All I can say is YUM!! OMG!. The beef salad was amazing! Chicken skewers were also wicked. I mixed my chicken with the rice, which helped with the burning tongue (from the chili in my salad) I was stuffed by the time I ate all that and a few prawn appies. I skipped my pad thai Too bad, by the time I tried it it was cold so I left it for Vaughn.who raved about the food. This is a very good sign as he has been to Thailand 8 times and is a chef so he is pretty picky. \We have ordered take out from them again, and will order in the near future as well. read more

A recommendation from my partner's co-worker (who is Thai) brought us to this little place. I don't venture this part of downtown much, and that it is not on the main strip of Davie makes this more of a destination spot, but not too far off as it is right around the corner on Thurlow. We came in here once prior to close just to take a look at the menu saying we would be back, well we came back to finally try their food and we decided to sit in. Me and my partner needed to kill some time before dinner, what better place than another place to eat and order food to ruin your dinner so we ordered a snack, actually we ordered a dish of the 'pad gra prow'. We happily sat in the corner while the chef in the back was turning on the fire cooking our meal to be. I had to use the washroom, and it's quite an experience cause you actually have to go through the kitchen to get to the tiny washroom. They work in tight quarters here, but the first thing you realize is that this place is very clean. I was more confident of my meal from walking back to my table, and I told my partner to go use the washroom to see how the kitchen looks. Our meal finally arrived in front of us, hot, steamy, and totally ready to be devoured. There was a nice sunny side egg on top of the minced up meat, and mixed in with the thai basil and chili's. This was a plate that would be so good on a cold day as it can make you sweat, well, it made me sweat. You could taste the mixture of garlic, onions chilies and basil in this great dish, it was something very homey at the same time for me, I wouldn't be producting this in my house. At least now I know a place where I can get good take out food, this place is a little, so don't come in with too many people, but if you like little quick joints like I do, and some solid food take a step into this place. I will come back to try their curries, and maybe go for the 'pad gra prow' again. They use good ingredients, and if your in here you can really smell the cooking to the point you may come out smelling like what you just ordered. Another one to add to the Thai list. read more

First time trying Thai Basil. First impression, small, cute little take out place and numerous people in and out of the restaurant for take out, which is a good first impression. The staff was super friendly, also recommended us the Bangkok style pad Thai, since we wanted something that tasted super spicy and authentic. So we ordered the BKK style pad Thai and Thai chicken green curry to go. The green curry was delicious with a lot of eggplants in it and had a semi sweet, spicy, flavourful curry base. The pad Thai was decent for my taste buds, it didn't meet the expectations of the flavour we were expecting. Overall a good take out place and I will try out more items and review them accordingly. For both items + a side of small rice we paid around $24. read more

Three Stars might be pushing it a little bit, the food is decent, the price is amazing and you get fed quickly. You can get VEG/AN food here so that's a huge bonus! Cheap lunch curry is the ONLY thing I've ever eaten from this tiny little place just off Davie Street. In fact, I have only ever had the VEG/AN food here, so please take that into consideration for this review. You get a side of rice and a laughable little iceberg lettuce salad with the lunch curry special. My personal favorite is the Green Curry, it has Japanese Eggplant and Basil and I (obviously!) get it with the Tofu. I have tried the other curries; Red = Pumpkin & Basil and Yellow = Potato & Onion, the Green one has the most robust flavour. The restaurant only has like 4 or 5 cramped tables to sit at. So getting take-out might be more appetizing than 'someone waiting for take out' bum, right next your head. read more

My regular Thai joint to get my Thai food hit. Not as authentic as I'd like to be but I can't be too picky for the price and location. I normally get their Pad Thai or Pad Thai BKK. Their regular Pad Thai is a tad sweet but edible and their BKK version is more $, savoury with 4 pieces of shrimp and 2 slices of beef. Both have a ton of bean sprouts. I hungered for some pad see ew and this place reared it's head from around the corner of thurlow. The place is small, tighter than I'd like. I sat myself outside. The cold nipped at my fingertips but the warmth of the sun made me not care. It was going to be a joyous afternoooo..... Ok, back to the food. Pad See Ew was exactly how I like it. Just enough saltiness but not over the top. I wish I had a bigger portion but my tuba belly says "thank ya Thai lord for puttin the stop to my thigh horde from becoming its own zip code!" A complete tasty dinner that hits the spot. I got a good portion for about $9...will last me at least 2 meals. The restaurant is easy to find and is located near the corner of Davie and Thurlow. I used to eat there all the time, for flavour and value, but recently they pulled a stunt on me which i didn't appreciate. I guess i was kinda dressed like a tourist and i have not been there during the pandemic. Anyway, i had ordered one of their delicous soups , which always comes with chicken. Well you guessed it. They short changed me. There was no chicken! Did they think i didnt know? They brought me a new soup, but no discount or on the house kind of thing. They tried to screw me, now i wonder if i am the only one. Generally their curries are delicious. They also have brown rice, which is better for diabetics. I will give them another chance, but if they try it again i am gone from there forever...its very small in there for dinning in.
