I've been by this place a million and a half thirty-two times and have never stopped in. Well on this fine sunny day I found myself famished after hitting the local grocery store. I hungered for some pad see ew and this place reared it's head from around the corner of thurlow. The place is small, tighter than I'd like. I sat myself outside. The cold nipped at my fingertips but the warmth of the sun made me not care. It was going to be a joyous afternoooo..... Ok, back to the food. Pad See Ew was exactly how I like it. Just enough saltiness but not over the top. I wish I had a bigger portion but my tuba belly says "thank ya Thai lord for puttin the stop to my thigh horde from becoming its own zip code!" I will return. read more

We were taken to this place for dinner because its our friend's favorite thai spot and he knew a few people who worked there. We were lucky and snagged a seat outside. Seemed like a small space inside. The waitress was cool peoples but remember I am biased :) I got the Tofu Pad Woon Sen. The brown rice vermicelli in the description won me over. The taste was even better. It was not heavy or oily at all. It was light, refreshing, perfectly seasoned. I shared some of it with our friend but ate most of it up. It was just so delicious. And unlike a lot of cheap thai places, I didn't feel sick or too full afterwards. The Boy got the Vegetarian Wok with garlic sauce. It looked great, tasted great. Not too oily. Good garlic flavor. Our friend had the spring rolls. They looked good! I didn't try because I didn't want to get too full before my dish. I thought it was great taste and great value. Sitting outside was nice. Not crazy busy like it is on Davie but great spot to people watch. All in all a great experience. read more

Still a solid four stars for me. I have since tried the yellow curry(outstanding, a little spicy) and pad thai(mediocre, quite bland). Value for money is still excellent, and service is still very good. Self-serve water jugs and cups right at the front counter. I only wish they'd find a larger location and better tables/seating - seems to me like they're busy enough to justify a bigger space. read more

I used to eat there all the time, for flavour and value, but recently they pulled a stunt on me which i didn't appreciate. I guess i was kinda dressed like a tourist and i have not been there during the pandemic. Anyway, i had ordered one of their delicous soups , which always comes with chicken. Well you guessed it. They short changed me. There was no chicken! Did they think i didnt know? They brought me a new soup, but no discount or on the house kind of thing. They tried to screw me, now i wonder if i am the only one. Generally their curries are delicious. They also have brown rice, which is better for diabetics. I will give them another chance, but if they try it again i am gone from there forever...its very small in there for dinning in. They added a patio (street eating) with 2 extra tables (during the restrictions). Metered parking everywhere. read more

This place was great! Good food, decently priced, clean and the staff was friendly! The space is a little small but they have seating outside as well. I enjoy this restaurant read more

Had the Pad See-Ew. Average dish, no flavour. Wouldn't order again. The spring rolls were tasty though.

We rang the restaurant in advance to enquire about gluten free choices for my celiac daughter. The employee assured me their gluten free choices would be safe. Disappointingly my daughter got sick within 30 minutes of eating in the restaurant. We were especially annoyed as we repeatedly put the front of counter employee over the gluten free aspect of our dinner. Not celiac safe- staff are not knowledgeable about celiac safe protocol. read more

I have ordered before & been happy, but tonight's order was not good at all. No flavor & just pale noodles & pale chicken. Very disappointing. The Door Dasher texted that he had waited over 20 minutes for the order, so maybe new cook? Won't be ordering again. read more

This is my new favourite Thai restaurant in Vancouver! I've been here twice in less than a week which shows how much I like it! Now... it also happens to be located near the Vancouver Aquatic Centre - a convenient and tasty choice after hitting the gym. Which means my ravenous appetite from working out *may* contribute to why I'm such a fan. Well, it still gets stars for a fantastic location just off of Davie Street. And because of the curry! I grew up having thicker curries whereas my partner craves the thinner, soup-like curries he had while traveling all around Thailand. To him, this place gets closest to the consistency he remembers and loves. And I love it too! The restaurant itself is quite tiny and several people stopped by simply to get take out. With lunch specials starting at $5.95, I can see why! Great value of food for what you pay. That's why Basil gets a solid 4 stars for me. And i'll probably continue being a regular for as long as my new years resolution of hitting the gym sticks around :) read more

Thai Basil - Green curry lunch special with chicken - great value at $7.95 :) - Thai Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

We were looking for a quick and quality meal on our way to the movies and decided on Thai Basil in the West End. True to other reviews, there's really not much seating inside (14 squished in, if I counted correctly), with a couple of small tables outside. We ordered the red curry with pumpkin and the swimming rama, both tofu, with a large side of jasmine rice. Both dishes were delicious! They were served up when ready and hot - no silly waiting for the rest of the meal to be ready. The curry was lovely, but lacked any spice at all. Others have complained about getting broccoli with their rama, but I think it was the perfect pair! Use those florets to mop up all that peanutty goodness! Portions were good - both my boyfriend and I were stuffed to the gills for just $20. And be sure to partake in the extra condiments on the counter: crushed peanuts, hot sauce and the like... While eating or meals, Thai Basil got lots of traffic - it's nice to see a good place busy with sit-in and takeout orders. I'll definitely come here again! We'll certainly be getting takeout soon enough. Om nom nom... read more

Quick last min take out dinner. Such efficient service. We were in and out! We ordered a red and yellow curry. Prices are reasonable. Food was pretty good especially the red curry but it is a little on the watery side of curries. Portions were a little smaller but enough. Will order again! read more

Thai Basil - Red and yellow curry beef mix. - Thai Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

Delish. Large portions. Quick. Reasonably priced. Will order again. Green curry and pad thai.

Picked up the eggplant dish with tofu and side of rice. It was so good. Enough food for me to have 3 meals

Took out an order of Pad Kee Mao and spring rolls. The spring rolls were pretty good. The Pad kee mao was exceptionally poor. Bland, too much red pepper just slapped on a bunch of undercooked ingredients. The chicken in it seemed sans any spice, just plain boiled meat. I have hardly ever thrown out food. Guess will have to throw away this one. read more

I have had takeout from here that was delicious. Thai green curry and Pad Thai. Definitely going back. Friendly service too.

Oh my. I'm sure other things on the menu might be okay, but based on my order (can't remember the name, but it was chicken with peppers, garlic) I would never go back. I've never had flavourless Thai food before. I'm pretty sure I don't have Covid as my taste buds are intact, so I'm sure it was the food. Sorry guys. Great service and friendly for sure. Based on the number of people waiting for take out and those who seemed to know the people working there I'm sure it was just not the thing to order, but still won't go back. read more

Since the closure of Mango Thai, I've been going here a lot more often The food has improved, and they have gone thru a series of renovations I always order the Phad Krapow with pork. It's delicious, much improved. The egg acts as a sauce to bind everything together Another dish that I order is Phad Thai Bangkok. It's real phad thai, none of this foreigner phad thai with ketchup nonsense So, if you're going here..order the phad krapow or the phad thai Bangkok. It's authentic as it gets for thai food in Vancouver Seriously, it will transport you back to Thailand..and on a rainy day in Vancouver that's a blessing read more

Good portions however a little bland. The garlic broccoli is a joke... do not waste your money. Shrimp appetizer is also mediocre. No, won't do this again read more

Green Curry Lunch Special: Watery curry and was actually yellow curry, not green. They said green - haha! I'm not blind or stupid. Not sure what happened there. Chicken was plentiful, however a few pieces had an odd taste ie. cooked before and re-heated, or not fresh, but they are busy so that's hard to believe. Eggplant was fried in oil and plentiful. Some thai basil leaves fried and put in - nice flavor but oily. Rice was just enough. Salad was just iceberg lettuce. Sad. Lunch order of pad thai - FYI only comes with one prawn. Regular order is 3 prawns -standard i am seeing at other places. Use tomato sauce not tamarind so its not the classic pad thai. Cashier: The guy behind the counter is nice enough but always scratching and spreading his hair and flakes every where, When you work indirectly or directly with people edibles DONT TOUCH YOUR HAIR OR FACE! I lost my appetite. Tables were not cleaned. Smelled like urine a bit. Need a drape to cover their cooking area which is tight. Servers are students but really they all need a lesson in hygiene. read more

Well I came back and my fish was better but it was deceiving, instead of ordering the lunch special pad Thai I opted for the dinner or regular sized portion. I got the take out and was shocked to see only 3 prawns and the lunch version got three. So I paid extra for what? It was basically the same thing. And this is my fault for getting take out but by the time I got to my office the dish had basically solidified into one large glob. It was ok, definitely better than the last time but it was still under whelming considering the lack of prawns at a higher price. I'm thinking with this place you should stick with the curries read more

Thai Basil - Dinner sized pad Thai yet same amount of prawns as lunch size :( - Thai Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

Super friendly staff, affordable price, fast service. Only downside is that you can't choose the spice level. I like their pad thai, not too sweet, lots of prawns. Red curry or penang curry are great too. read more

Ehh... I hate when yelpers rank high because something is cheap. Sure it can weigh in a 1/2 star but this is a perfect example of a place that simply serves "food," free of spices, herbs, fresh ingredients, service, cleanliness, disorganized and frazzled staff with no system for seating or pickup.... Just food. So why is it ranked 4 stars? Because everything is half the price as the other Thai restaurants in town. And trust me when I say that after tasting the flavors; you'll know why. Again, not saying it was bad, but it's just lackluster food, the type you eat to survive, not experience Thai cuisine. I definitely won't be back. I'll stick to the $14 plates at pink elephant or Sala Thai and enjoy a tasty Thai dish. read more

Having eaten here many times over the past couple of years, I am always expecting a 3 star Thai take home meal. It's not the greatest by any stretch, but on a Friday night when you just can't be bothered to cook, it'll do. However, tonight's Basil feast was a dud. Apparently they ran out of spinach for the Swimming Rama, and the floating/drowning broccoli was a pretty sad replacement. The red curry was the same as usual. Tiny, but A-OK! As always, pick up is ready in ten minutes, and they always greet you with a happy hello. Hate to admit it, but I will no doubt return the next time I just can't be bothered to open the fridge and think. read more

We eat here regularly (once a week) and most of the staff (I am certain) can recognize us. Our last experience made me reconsider eating here. After walking in and seating ourselves, we had to get our own menus, get our own water, and order at the counter (not new - their service is extremely inconsistent). We then observed the waitresses actually provide service to other customers - taking orders, providing menus, even providing water. Frustrating, but we usually suck it up because we like the food and the price so much. However, the food can't make up for the attitude and rudeness that I experienced after I ordered our food at the counter. I asked if they could wipe down our table, as it was a bit sticky, and had some remnants of food (gross). The waitress rolled her eyes and sighed, as if it was such an inconvenience! Remind me, what am I paying 15% tip for??? Ugh. 4 stars now reduced to 2 stars because of the service. Might as well get take-out instead. read more

My favorite Thai restaurant! After having bad experiences at Sala Thai on Burrard (one of the major tourist trap places with way overpriced menu items) I was looking for a good Thai restaurant. I discovered this neat authentic Thai restaurant walking down Davie Street, and I have been a regular since. I order take out here and I like their lunch special #31 - Pad Thai with Salad. It cost about $8.00 and the ingredients are very fresh and not greasy like other ones I had before and no MSG. This week they have a Barbeque Chicken with sticky rice and Salad for $10.00. The chicken was cooked perfectly which pairs great with the sticky rice. The papaya salad was a huge portion and it took me two sittings to finish it. The fish cake I ordered was light and crispy. One of the major problems I have with Thai restaurant foods is that they are too greasy but you won't experience this here. Other points: -This place is popular, and seating is always full. There are only about 4-5 tables inside the small restaurant, and 2 outdoor seating. A lot of people wait outside for their take out as its cramped. -It is an open kitchen, so you can see exactly what the chef is doing. -I believe there is only 1 or 2 people making the food, so the service is slower than the average. I wanted close to 25 mins. -No atmosphere or ambiance so come here for their fantastic food! Can't wait to try other food from Thai Basil and will definitely take friends here. Highly recommended for lunch, and remember to skip if you are looking for a pretty dine in restaurant. read more

I've eaten here twice in the past 2 weeks and love it! The first was take out and the second time we went to sit down for lunch! In the city, I have yet to find a good value Thai place so my friend was adamant in coming here since he has been a regular here for years! The food here is pretty solid - the pad thai and yellow curry were both so good and cheap. The staff was friendly and our food came quickly! Definitely fulfilled my hope of at least one Thai place in Vancouver with decent prices and good food!! read more

Just ok, The curry was good, actually a tad expensive for a space like this but the taste was on par with good restaurant style curry. The pad thai started out ok but got less tasty as I ate it and the sweetness of the sauce came through. Thai operated but just didn't hit the marks like Sawasdee Thai on main. read more

I have been to Thai Basil several times it is right in my neighborhood so I always get take out and drag it home! That restaraunt is also just way too "intimate" for my liking...It seats about 10 inside and 4 outside. Since I have never ate inside the restaraunt I can't vouch for how good or bad thier service is so I will just give my personal opinion of the items ordered. Spring Rolls: Love, love, love spring rolls! Their spring rolls are a little too oily but I can forgive it. Grilled Beef Salad: Not great but I could eat it again, the beef was really good but it was a little spicier than I am used to. Massamman Curry: Once again spicier than I am use to but well worth it this time. I have yet to be dissapointed in their curry and hope that doesn't change anythime soon. They also have really good dinner combos, you pick any entree and you get a mini portion of that along with a spring roll, jasmine rice and mixed greens. I usually get the Vegetarian wok in curry sauce and it's really good but also on the spicy side! For quick, decent quality take out you it is difficult to be both the price and quality! read more

Thai Basil is about one block from my BFF's place - where I stay whenever I visit Vancouver. She and I get Thai Basil to go at least twice each visit. The restaurant is tiny, and we've never ordered to stay, mainly because you can picnic on the beach only 3 blocks away! The portion to price ratio is fantastic - I'm hard pressed to find a Thai place that good, convenient & reasonably priced in my town. I always get the Green or Masuman Curry which tastes pretty darn close to the curries I have had in Thailand, although the salad that is included with the meals is decidedly not Thai, and more just lettuce with dressing. When I go back to visit, I will absolutely be eating here again. read more

What a disappointing experience. They use a lot of filler -bean sprouts and noodles and the flavours are bland- not what traditional Thai food is all about. Complexity and spice please. We had 3 dishes and they were all mediocre at best. Better to pay a few dollars more and get a special meal somewhere else read more

The food is ok, but it is way more expensive than it should be. I'm not sure where else I would pay $10 for fried rice. Also, their space is about 1/4 the size they actually need for their operation. So if you're lucky enough to get a table, there will be people waiting for their take-out, in your face, the whole time you're there. If you're there for take-out, you'd better be prepared to push, because there's no obvious lineup and it's a scramble to get to the counter to place your order. I will say this: the girl at the cash might be the best multi-tasker I've ever seen. She took my order, sent another order to the kitchen, charged another customer, and handed out menus to some more customers without breaking stride. I wish I had those abilities at my own job. read more

This is for the new Cornwall location. First of all, I LOVE that this place is completely open to Cornwall/Kits Beach. It's like sitting outside. Very beachy feel to it that gives it four stars just for its location and open store front. I opted for the Chicken and broccoli with peanut sauce. Great mixture. Not spicy. Cooked well. Nothing over the top exceptional about it, but it was tasty. Our daughter had the chicken satay and she enjoyed it. Rice is extra here...which is the norm in this area. A cacophany of fresh, bright, varied flavours. Quick service, tiny space, this place does a brisk take out business. Thai Basil is the very definition of 'hole in the wall', as previously stated by several observant yelpers, but don't let the appearance fool you. In a neighborhood with no fewer than 6 Thai restaurants in a 3 block radius (this may be an exaggeration), Thai Basil is my favorite by a landslide. Okay, the decor isn't great and it's about as spacious as eating in your closet, but the service and food are absolutely fantastic, and it's reasonably affordable to boot! Get the yellow curry with sweet potatoes and prawns, and tell them Derek sent you. (That won't actually hold any meaning for them, but it'll make me feel good about myself). read more
