I've been coming since the beginning and have always enjoyed the food and service. But something is off this time. I ordered the Tom Kah Kai, satay, and pad Thai. All three were unusually sweet. For Tom Kah to be sweet, something is missing. I could y taste the galangal even though it was in the soup. Dipping sauce for satay ws also sweet. The meat itself was not very hot and had no flame flavour. Pad Thai had some heat but it was also too sweet. Perhaps too much tamarind. I hope this is just an odd day. We had to try the oldest Thai restaurant in Vancouver! We made a reservation after hearing it can get quite busy, and I'm glad we did. Even on a weekday evening, the restaurant was nearly full. We started with the papaya salad, which was fresh, crisp, and nicely seasoned. We also ordered the roasted duck curry. I'm not usually the biggest duck fan, but the curry itself had great flavor. The broth was a bit looser and soupier than I was expecting, but it paired wonderfully with rice. I was also surprised to find pieces of whole fruit in the curry, something I haven't encountered in Thai curries before. The standout of the meal was definitely the Crying Tiger platter. We ordered it with both beef and pork jowl. While the beef was excellent, the pork jowl was especially memorable. Both meats had a wonderful charred, smoky flavor from the grill and were served alongside fresh vegetables and sticky rice, making for a satisfying and well-balanced dish. The prices were also extremely reasonable for the quality and portions. There are still so many dishes on the menu I'd love to try, and I'd happily return on a future visit to Vancouver. read more

Within a few minutes of our order, pad tai noodles arrive the table. It's quite shocking and made me wonder if they premade them in advance waiting to serve. Decent portion on each dish. The papaya salad is a lot tangy than I had it in Bangkok last month. Pad tai noodles are okay, also more sour and tangy than i like. The half roasted chicken is on the dry side. Chicken satay uses chicken breast so not my liking. The basil stir fry with minced pork is overly salty. In terms of service, they are friendly. However they ask to give us the bill before we are ready. Not particularly welcome customers to sit long. Not a good gathering place. read more

Tip: Make a reservation if you are more than 3 people. My family of four walked in around 6PM on a weekday (back in May 2025), and was told the wait will be over an hour. We came back a few days later around 5:15PM, and was told that we can sit down if we can finish by 6:30PM. I'm glad we came back, because the food is delicious. Make a reservation because this place gets packed! This family run restaurant has been around since 1986. We ordered a variety of dishes to share and the food is authentic and flavourful with big portions. Some of my fave dishes were: Stuffed chicken wings: crispy on the outside with a ton of filling and a sweet dipping sauce. Tom yum soup: I love the tangy flavour with a hint of spice. This time I ordered chicken but I prefer it with prawns. Pineapple fried rice: lots of wok hay. This dish is delicious on its own or with curry. I will be back to try more dishes! read more

Sawasdee is a very busy restaurant and reservations are definitely recommended. We were able to find street parking but it is a busy street and finding parking may be a challenge. We had reservations and had a brief wait before our table was ready. We were given a lovely window seat - great for people watching. The restaurant was full but it was not too noisy, just the happy buzz of diners. The service was very good and we were able to enjoy our meal in the recommended 1.5 hr with a bottle of wine without feeling rushed or pressured to leave. We had tom yum fried rice, bbq pork jowl and duck in a red curry sauce. The food was all delicious and the portions are a decent size. The restaurant has a lovely warmth and vibe to it. The tastes of each dish---Shrimp Pad Thai, Fried Tofu, Chicken Coconut Curry, Chicken Satay, Papaya Salad, Stuffed Chicken Wings, Crying Tiger----all Thai standard classics---are flavorful and authentic,. They are also presented artistically and artfully. Service is quick, efficient and friendly. When we pointed out a faux pas, no nuts in the papaya salad---they immediately made us a new one. This place is super busy and very popular---so reservations are a must. It was my wife's birthday. They gave us a postcard with a birthday greeting in the back of the card. Went with a group of friends and decided to order a few items to share family style. I was undecided on the pad thai or curry and was really glad I got to try both as the pad thai was underwhelming. It lacked flavor, could have had more shrimp, and I was happy I didn't end up getting this 1 dish on my own. We also got the red and green curry, the papaya salad and stuffed chicken wings. I have been going to Sawasdee for about 2 decades and they have remained my favorite Thai restaurant ever since. They offer authentic Thai cuisine and outstanding customer service. We got the papaya salad, chicken skewers, pad thai with tamarind and chicken, green curry with vegetables with coconut rice, cashew chicken, pineapple fried rice. The papaya salad was crisp and refreshing. The chicken skewers were tender and flavorful. Both the pad thai and fried rice were tasty, but could have used a touch more flavor. The grilled squid was probably one of the best Thai dishes I've ever had, and the yellow curry and pad Thai noodles (tamarind) were also both outstanding--high quality ingredients, expertly cooked. Food don't disappoint. Portions are generous, prices are fair, but the service is lacking a bit. I headed to the front desk to ask for water, beer and utensils for our table. As we already waited over six minutes to have someone serviced us, and since we're with visitors, they mentioned that service was slow and since it's summer time, we're all wanting cold water before hot meals arrived. Came here with a friend and it was exactly the kind of warm, comforting Thai meal you hope for, flavorful, generous portions, and super satisfying. The Pad Thai was a standout, nicely balanced between sweet/tangy/savory, with tender noodles and that classic wok kissed aroma. We also ordered the papaya salad (Som Tum), which was bright and refreshing, crunchy, citrusy, and a little spicy in the best way (perfect to cut through the richer dishes). For something cozy, the curry hit the spot, creamy, aromatic, and fragrant with Thai herbs, with a good level of heat that builds slowly. Haven't been here in a while because it's always busy and booked up! The quality of food is still delicious and amazing. My personal favourite is always the Pad Thai because they make it so well. We ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai, duck curry, Sawasdee fried rice, meat platter, tofu and beans, dumplings, and the Thai Milk Tea. I came as a big group and I'm glad we came shortly after opening because it soon became packed! The dishes were delicious and I would definitely come back to try their other items on the menu! I tried the Thai green curry and drunken noodles as well as the Thai iced tea on their lunch menu. My favourite was the Thai iced tea, I love a sweet treat and this definitely hit the spot. It was fragrant and sweet and made perfectly. I liked the toppings in the drunken noodles and noodle texture. I liked the green curry a lot and I found it so fragrant and flavourful. Everything was solid but nothing particularity stood out to me as extra delicious My biggest takeaway from this was the Thai mint candy! The service was very attentive and friendly. We ordered the following: Tom Kha - I'm not even a soup person but loved sharing the soup. The got the small size but the portion was still big enough for two people. Pad thai- this is usually my go to dish at any thai restaurant and it did not disappoint. I got the tamarind sauce and it wasn't too sweet. With level 3 spice it had just enough kick to make the dish come alive. Cashew nut stir fry - surprisingly delicious. I wish the veggies were more soft and less crunchy but I loved the taste Green curry - this was a bit of a disappointment as the dish was a little bland for me. My mother and I ordered Sawasdee for take out dinner and we were looking forward to what we ordered! We got chicken dumplings, the stuffed chicken wings (both said spicy on the menu), Thai green curry with beef, coconut rice, and Pad Thai with tamarind sauce. Overall our biggest feedback was everything with the exception of the green curry was quite sweet so the dishes taste all very similar in flavour. The chicken wings, while in theory I love the idea of a stuffed wing, we got pieces of small bone in ours as we were chewing which wasn't pleasant. The dumplings were absolutely stunning to look at but were much more sweet than spicy. We didn't get any hint of spice. The pad Thai was underwhelming as we've had better before. The best dish was the Thai green curry! It had a great spice factor and was super flavourful. We had the coconut rice as a base and again that was quite sweet. Wanted to try some authentic Thai food after visiting Thailand and this lived up to it! They do accept reservations over the phone and there is quite a bit of seating. They are knowledgeable about dietary preferences and restrictions offering vegan and gluten free options. I did find the veggie spring rolls a little oily and the eggplant chicken lacking a bit of flavour. It could have just been an off day but will definitely be back again soon! read more

Been twice to Sawasdee Thai Restaurant. It's a few doors down from Trafiq. It's been packed both visits. The dining area is huge so it's ideal for large groups. Service was friendly and they'll ask you for spice level, but mild and medium requests have both resulted in zero spice whatsoever. Seems they cater spiceness to their main clientele. The menu is split into appetizers, salads, soups, curries, meat (chicken, beef, pork and seafood), vegetables, noodle & rice and chef's suggestions. Trip #1 - 2x Thai iced tea ($4.95) - not too sweet. - Thai satay (#2) ($13.00 for 4) - chicken skewers were passable but pricey for what you get. - Pineapple fried rice (#61) ($17.00) - stingy with the pineapple but good flavour. - Pad see ew (#76) ($18.00) - plenty of broccoli. Noodles had a nice bite. - Coconut rice (#62B) ($4.50 regular) - Yellow curry (#18C) ($18.00) - curry was flavourful but no kick in the spice department. - Crying tiger beef (#63) ($19.00) - sauce was tasty but the grilled beef didn't wow us. - Kang pak with tofu (#68) ($18.00) Trip #2 - Thai satay (#2) ($13.00 for 4) - tried the pork this time around. Try this instead of the usual pad thai. - Pad eggplant (#55C) ($13.50) - eggplant tasty, sauce flavourful (but a touch salty). - Green curry (#18B) ($18.00) - endless amount of bamboo shoots. Green curry was adequate but standard fare. - Kang panang (#20A) ($18.00) - liked the slightly thicker sauce. Good flavour and paired excellently with the beef. Better than the green curry. We ordered the Cho Muang, Tom Kha, Pad Thai (with tamarind sauce), Red Curry, and Crying Tiger Beef. While the Crying Tiger Beef was a bit too lean for my liking, the portion size and overall flavor were still good. The Cho Muang, Tom Kha, and Pad Thai were definitely my favourites - each dish had a unique and delicious taste that was beautifully presented. Got there at 6, and had to wait half hour since the restaurant is relatively small. To be honest, food itself is average (having high expectation makes it feel worse). We can't get enough of this place. We had crispy wonton to start (no picture cause we were starved) then we had the purple dumplings, super tasty and a must try. Lots of main dishes, crying Tiger beef, pad Thai, yellow Currey with chicken and potatoes, prawn with cashew not, Sawadee House rice with Prawn. So good. The flavors are amazing and we went with medium spicy and had extra hot sauce on the side. We could have gone spicier. Pad Thai with Tamarind sauce There were two types of sauces, we chose the traditional tamarind over tomato. The overall taste is still sweet which I just can't resist! . Hor Mok Gai Ma Praw Onn The rich red curry packed in coconut tastes slightly spicy, not sweet very. The texture is thicker than the normal curry and the entire coconut is full of meat. HOWEVER the chicken stripes was pre-fried and marinated, they were too dry and salty. . Crying Tiger Beef The portion is conscientious for 19 dollars. I like the sweet and sour sauce on the side but the beef texture was too lean. . Green Curry with Fish My first time to eat curry with fish. Absolutely delicious! The green curry is sweet and creamy, with a lot of shredded bamboo shoots inside . Thai Iced Tea Not powdered Thai milk tea, slightly on the sweet side of a throw - I also ordered rice and coconut rice, I love the fragrance of coconut!
