I was here on Nov 9th with M and we had a great time having Thai dinner. We had #47 Thuua Phat Phrik King (green beans $16.50) and #25 Gaeng Kari (yellow curry $17.50) they were so delicious. Our food came piping hot and fresh it was so yummy. Green beans were spicy and flavorful just the way we liked. I didn't know the rice had to be ordered extra. We had to order rice for our food afterwards. Curry and rice itself had a huge portion. I'd say it was suitable for 2 servings and leftover was packed for my lunch the next day. Even though this place seemed Chinese owned the food was great. It was better than we expected. Mango Colada ($5.25) was great as well. Fast and attentive service. I arrived at the door and waited to be seated. A server at the cashier or counter bar totally ignored me or did not pay attention to the customers at the door. I had been waiting for a while and he still did not come to the front. My friend finally arrived and both of us walked to the server and asked to be seated by ourselves. Not good.... right at the beginning of a meal. We looked at the menu. It had a wide variety of food. We picked a pad Thai with shrimp and pad see iw with chicken. The pad Thai tasted only okay. It was not the good pad Thai that I had at a real Thai restaurant. The pad see iw was basically rice noodles cooked with soy sauce. I had a really good pad see iw that was cooked by Thai chef. I had expectations before I tasted these two dishes. Unfortunately, they disappointed me. The server did serve us okay during the meal. He kept refilling our water and packed the leftover for us. The lunch specials are quite value for money as you can get it for about $10 (including tax). I decided on the chicken green curry which came with rice, soup, a spring roll and small salad. It had 3 chilies to indicate the level of spice, but errr...it was really not very spicy. It had a bit of heat but it would be considered mild to those used to the spice level in Thailand/South East Asia. The green curry chicken was quite tasty and I liked it came with lots of gravy to go with the rice. It was a lot of rice, which would be good for those who needed plenty of carb energy. The spring roll was crispy and nice. The soup was plain, just sour soup. It was fairly quiet when I was there, with only one person taking and serving orders. I've tried a few thai restaurants in Vancouver, but Green Basil Thai was definitely below average. The quality and taste of the food did not reflect the price. We ordered the Tom Yum soup, chicken and beef skewers, as well as the yellow curry (recommended by the server). The tom yum soup was decent. It contained 2 shrimps and some mushrooms, as well as tomatoes. The skewers were dry and tough, not tender and juicy like some other skewers I've had before. The biggest disappointment was the yellow curry. The ingredients wasn't paired well and it felt like just some veggies cooked in sauce. There was no Thai flavor in the curry and I didn't feel so good after eating it. Despite the quality of the food, the service and atmosphere was okay. The server was kind and offered recommendations, as well as refilled our drinks several times. The restaurant is also quite spacious with some decor. There is limited parking behind the restaurant. I don't each much Thai food so I don't know how authentic the food are but the flavor of the food that we ordered were not bad at all. We ordered their lunch specials - pad Thai and a chicken yellow curry which is around $10 each. The flavor of the pad Thai had a slight sweetness to it and it's not too spicy. If it didn't have the shellfish in it, I would have eat more than a bite of it. The yellow chicken curry with pineapple and coconut cream was really good! Really not a very good thai place but with the entertainment book coupon, this was a pretty good deal. We came at lunch so we ordered two entrees off the main menu as well as al lunch special. The pad thai was made with thick noodles and was really really sweet. It had way too thick of a sauce and although had some prawns, the proportion of noodles to other ingredients was way off. The chicken stir fry with thai black bean sauce was again, sugary sweet and extremely oily. Because of the coupon, this was an okay deal but it was no different from chinese style stir fry. I was surprised to see some of the negative-mediocre ratings on here. I came into Green Basil before an event in Burnaby without looking at any reviews beforehand and had a great experience. We walked in around 4:30-5ish and the place was completely empty, so we were about to get a table for 2 right away. Our server came over right away with some waters and menus. As far as their menu goes, they've got all the traditional Thai dishes: curries, noodles, and soups. We decided to split the chicken satay, chicken pad thai, and chicken pad seew. Chicken overload over here. The chicken satay came out first, and it was delicious! Perfectly seasoned and spiced and fell right off the skewer. Both noodle dishes came out shortly after and the portions were so large! I was shocked at how much was on the plate. I wish I could say we finished it all, but we definitely didn't and they made for great leftovers. We were in and out of there within an hour! My partner is sensitive to strong spice and they were great with chatting with him to figure out what could work and adjusting the spice level for him! Visited a few days ago for lunch. I witnessed one of their customers going berzerk. She had just finished lunch(I presume it was her son she was with) and wanted to use her entertainment book coupon in addition to their lunch special(which is already only $8). She kept insisting that she had phoned beforehand and that they had said they would honor it. The staff tried to quiet her down but she would not be reasoned with. One of the servers walked away and I certainly could not blame him. Not long after, he came back and told her to just pay and leave, which I think was warranted. If you can't afford $20 for lunch for two, well, perhaps you should make yourself a sandwich or some cereal at home. On account of the above, I'm going to cut the restaurant some slack. This was my second visit here - both were for lunch, with one weekend and one weekday visit. The weekend lunch menu has a condensed menu. My waiter on this occasion was the same guy who got lambasted above, and was efficient but not warm at all. The restaurant itself was chilly on this rainy day, which didn't set the mood very well either. I ordered the yellow curry - they presented it nicely with some fresh ingredients. The Pad Thai was different - an odd kind of noodle which was much moister than I'm used to. It was good, but I'm not sure I'd order it again. No one came to ask how the meal was, and as it happened I only had room for about half of the curry. I asked to have it packed up with the curry and the rice packaged separately and was told that I would be charged for that. In all my years of eating out at Thai restaurants, I've never been told that. My bill was brought with the to-go bag and totaled $8.35 for the lunch. I paid with a $10 note and was asked if I wanted change. Another poor move on their part. I still left a 15% tip but in retrospect I wonder what I was thinking. One thing lead to another and I was in and out of the restaurant within 25 minutes of arriving. I think that says something. I probably would not return to this restaurant of my own accord, but I realize that a lot of my experience was probably part and parcel of the stress that this crazy client put the staff under. read more

Parking is free if you go a block north. They have a Lunch menu for 1100-1500. It comes with soup and spring roll. I had the #24M tiger prawns with red curry paste and coconut rice ($9.95). I asked for it to be "3 peppers" spicy, but honestly, it was mild. My friend had the "1 pepper" curry and I couldn't even tell it was curry. Maybe this place had a ton of really weaksauce customers or something. The soup was some bland cabbage soup. Being a Thai place, you'd think they'd give you tom yum. Nope. The spring roll actually wasn't bad. The dipping sauce is pretty good. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place. Frankly, the food was quite disappointing. A wonderful, veg friendly Thai restaurant on Kingsway across from Metrotown. I've visited on a number of occasions, and have always had good experiences. The service is friendly, the ambiance is nice, and the food is delicious - I especially love their veg curries and their veg pad thai. On the first couple of occasions that I visited I specified "no egg" for my vegetarian pad thai (in order to make it vegan) and they assured me that when they say vegetarian it includes no egg, which I thought was nice. I would say that it is a little pricy, at approx $16 for the curry (plus side order of rice) and $15 for the pad thai. Our total for the two dishes tonight came to around $40. But for a nice night out and good food, I'm not complaining. One of these days I will save space for dessert and try their mango sticky rice! read more

I'm shocked at the only 3 stars Green Basil has gotten on Yelp. This is one of the best Thai restaurants in Vancouver ~ and I am hard to please with Thai cuisine. My friend and I tried to get into Cactus Club a few doors down one Saturday night, but with a 30 min wait for a table, we decided to wander Kingsway for an alternative. The entrance to Green Basil is narrow~ this restaurant is divided into 2 separate sections, with beautiful Thai ornaments decorating each side. We were very quickly seated, given menus and water, our server was very attentive and efficient. Very clean inside, I'm particular about that. We decided on a Phat Met Muang Mang Him Ma-Phan (!) but asked if we could modify it down to MILD, as it was "3 peppers" hot in seasoning. Yikes. That, and a chicken Pad Thai to share. Note: I have spent SUBSTANTIAL time in Thailand, over many visits, for months at a time, so I have eaten 'real' Thai food ranging from top restaurants to street stalls ~ and am tough to please with Thai food. Our food was promptly delivered with 2 or 3 different servers looking after us. Both entrees were delicious!! And, they modified the stir fry cashew dish perfectly. The pad thai was very close to the noodles I ate every day in Thailand and were perfectly cooked, and seasoned. Our food, and service could not have been better and I am really impressed with everything about Green Basil. They dropped off a small dish with a tiny bowl of soup, a spring roll, and a salad. The soup was watered down - I think there was a hint of something coconut/lemongrass...thingy! The spring roll was the standard tidbit - not good. The salad had a huge piece of lettuce head and it was sort of rotting - EW. The curry itself was decent and I finished it with the rice. I left most of the chicken behind - you know, it was old, hard, and it was boiled like nuts to make some broth before they dropped it into the curry. I have eaten at this location many times before, and as of last Friday due to service I was outraged. Me and a friend were looking for a close place to eat while we were at Metrotown shopping, and decided to use the 'Entertainment Book' Android application, as I have this coupon book. I set the application to search in the area for places that were able to be redeemed by mobile app coupon. The closest place was Green Basil. The food is ok, knowing the history of the place and it is opened up by people who used to work at Thai House so you know it's going to be affordable, and middle of the range in what your expectations are going to be. On this night, there seemed to be many tables reserved, but no one else showing up. The male working there (I think he was a manager of some sorts) asked if we were going to be fast... What does this mean, are you telling me to eat and get out, fine, I can do that, and I was planning to do this anyways. When I sat down and looked at the menu, me and my friend were ready to order, and I showed the mobile application to the waitress server there. She quickly glanced at it, and without even looking into it, dimissed it, and rudely raised her voice in a rude town and said "we have never had this option". I told her to look at the application on my phone, it says, "redeem on phone", she dimissed me still. I asked to speak to a manager, and she still said, "no you cannot speak to my manager!". I do not usually raise my voice back in a public place, but on this night it was well warranted. Note to whoever runs Green Basil, if a customer wants to speak to manager, you allow it, and to brush me off like this in the manner and fashion the way that it was down made me wonder why in hell's earth I even waited, and used to say good things about your place. I work just down the block from this place, and frequent it for lunch because of their amazing deals! I usually do not go right at 12 because it tends to get busy but I find that the service is always good, and the food is fast and piping hot. I HIGHLY recommend trying one of their $7.50 lunch special that includes soup, a spring roll and coconut rice. My absolute favourite is the Beef with Green Beans and Homemade Spicy Sauce. I found their spices to be a bit more Chinese rather than Thai for my beef dish. I liked their egg roll...it is a big deal that I ate the whole roll since I try to refrain from all deep fried foods these days. This was only my first time there and I only tried 1 dish so need to sample more foods to give more feedbacks. Been to many Thai places so I am a bit pickier and thus I only give this place 3 stars. I would still give this place another chance for the lamb curry and may update with more stars if I like :) Stay tuned! read more
