I used to like this place, but Just had dinner there and things have sure changed. Asked what could be made gluten free and they said the Pad Thai Bkk. To say it was disgusting is putting it mildly. It was drenched in goopy sickly sweet sauce. I might as well have poured half a bottle of syrup on a bunch of rice noodles. I couldn't eat it so my friend tried it and found it just as gross. The food here is inexpensive and healthy! In fact instead of going to a fast food restaurant, for the same money you can get a nutritious meal here. Service is friendly and you don't have to wait too long for them to freshly cook your meals. It's a smaller space but it works. (Finishing up some half-written reviews.) We have been to this spot multiple times, as it is near my workplace. It's not fancy, but it's a decent option for reasonably priced food there on Broadway. My notes from this particular visit tell me that we ordered: BBQ chicken lunch (8.95 -- that was a bargain!) Pineapple fried rice (My friend ordered this; I typically don't order fried rice in restaurants, as I think of it as what you do with leftovers.) Yellow curry Everything was well-executed and very reasonable, especially compared to nearby options. Value is decent. Service was decent, not memorable. I haven't paid much attention to parking, as we always walk over, but best guess is that parking is free in the neighborhood, if not right there on Broadway. Came in the other day because I was craving Pad Thai and wanted to take advantage of their lunch deal. It was already busy at 1pm and all the indoor seating was taken, they do have two little tables for outdoor dining as well - I decided to just wait and ordered my food ahead, within 5 minutes there was a table ready inside. The pad thai lunch deal came with a side salad and was $9.95. You're not able to choose which protein you like so mine came with tofu and 2 prawns. I was kind of let down because they used ketchup instead of tamarind sauce and the shrimps were precooked so they were dry and not juicy at all. Nevertheless, it was still very filling and affordable, Thai Basil is Thai fast food so I wasn't expecting too much but with other fast food Thai restaurants like Rice & Noodle using tamarind sauce and letting you pick your proteins for around the same price, I think they can do much better. read more

This was the first spot we tried when we arrived in Kitsilano. I like this location - easy parking, very walkable and so many great restaurants to choose from. Our food was pretty good...and the portions were just right. Everything tasted really fresh. The price was pretty reasonable, maybe partly because we're from LA and everything is so expensive. We got the Green Curry, pad thai, pineapple fried rice, basil ground pork stirfry with egg, and basil and eggplant stirfry. Disappointing tonight from Thai Basil. The chicken pad se ew was bland, lacking flavor and spiciness. The Massaman curry had more flavor, but the meat tasted like it had been pre-cooked and tossed in at the end; bland and rubbery. The restaurant was busy so our delivery took a long time to arrive. Perhaps they were under the pump and the food quality was lower than usual? It might be worth giving the once another shot. It's gone downhill. They load up on cheap ingredients and skimp on the tasty stuff (and have even gotten rid of pumpkin from their red curry). Cost effective and delicious. As a student, meals that are more affordable are obviously favourable, but I hate compromising flavour... and at Thai Basil I don't have to. Me two favourites are their peanut pad Thai and their yellow curry. I started with these two and haven't progressed past these two dishes because they were so good, but some day I will. It's really easy to takeout from here, in fact I would probably recommend taking out rather than dining in as it is a fairly busy place that always has a line of people waiting for takeout. This little gem opened a few weeks back and immediately filled a hole on West Broadway which was lacking in variety (mostly sushi and sandwiches). The employees were quick about making themselves known by hand-delivering menus to local businesses. Working just down the road, I was immediately open to trying the new spot for lunch. The lunch specials are incredible affordable - $8.95 for a lunch sized portion of Pad Thai, or curry and a variety of other delicious meals. I call ahead maybe 10 minutes and the food is ready as I walk in to pay. The sit-in section is well decorated, fresh and modern and both employees I have met so far have greeted me with a smile and engage in enough conversation that they remember me the next time I come through. I highly recommend trying the Pad Thai and while you're at it, grab a full coconut, freshly opened to sip on as you enjoy your lunch. read more

Thai Basil makes eating pad thai on a daily basis TOTALLY ACCESSIBLE! They're more than generous with their portion sizes. If you order the entrees (not the lunch combos,) the portions are enough for 2. Or pack it home and have it for lunch the next day! Everything on their menu is under the $12 mark (after tax!) Can you say affordable? Their menu is quite extensive so you could theoretically eat here and everyday without having to repeat your order. Sure, it's not the best thai food I've ever had, but the prices, generous portions, and friendly service (they even recognize me now!) make up for the lack of finesse. A staple in my rotation! Tip: If you want something different from your usual pad thai, try their pad thai BBK!! It's more shrimpy in flavour (and supposedly more authentic!) read more

The curries here have a bit more flavour than standard Thai take-out fare. My favorite is the green - made an eggplant believer out of me. The panang is okay, but too sweet for my taste. They get bonus points for having condiments on offer! The chili fish sauce and hot sauce allow you to control the spice, pungency and salt far better than choosing a spice level upon ordering. I've never understood why so few Thai and Vietnamese restaurants provide fish sauce. Or why they'd have soy sauce instead?! Atmosphere is casual but nice. Service is friendly. read more

I love Thai Basil - the food is very close to authentic Thai food, the price is affordable and the portion sizes are pretty big! My friends and I have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered here. My favourite dishes are both the items on the special dishes; the Pad Thai BKK and the Pad Gra Prow. If you prefer rice over noodles, I would recommend the latter. It's a combination of minced meat of any kind (I always go in for minced pork) with rice & topped off with an egg. Another great option is their Tom Yum Koong. It's perfectly spiced and a great option for a cold day. Overall tip: If you cannot tolerate spicy food just like me, I would suggest going for mild/no spicy. read more

Really mediocre food. They don't ask what spice level u want. I ordered the green curry w chicken. Bland boring and inadequate green spices and basil. Ordered eggplant tofu and basil too. Cooked like a poor bland Chinese stir fry rather than Thai. Eggplant was undercooked in both dishes. I sent both back to be recooked after I'd scooped out some chicken and rice. I had an absolutely awful experience at this restaurant. I went there with my friend as we were both craving some Tom Yum, mostly because it's got great flavour, it's a cold night, and is vegetarian (EVERY SINGLE other place I have been to on this planet serves it vegetarian, minus the shrimp paste in the broth which we can both tolerate just fine). I ordered two Tom yum noodle soups off the sandwich boards above the cash register, paid right after, and tipped 16%. When we got our food, to our surprise and disappointment, there was not only whole shrimp in it but also ground meat on top and throughout the soup. I went up the the register, apologized profusely and explained that we were unaware that the soup had so much meat in it. I explained that we were both strict vegetarian and I even offered for both of us to pay AGAIN for REPLACEMENT soups. I was met with glares, dumbfounded looks from all the staff, and they refused to do anything. Not only were we fine with paying again, but they continually gave me hell for not knowing that theirs has meat in it. My friend and I said that we could just leave and go somewhere else, and they didn't offer a refund or any form of accomodation. Having served for the past 5 years, I think it's safe to say that I have never had such a negative experience in a restaurant in my entire life. This place is great for a cheap eat, lunch or dinner. Kind of a cross between a take away and a casual cafe. The hostess is nice. I had a green curry and the OH had red curry. Wished that the curries came with more than one type of vege in them. I had the Pad Thai at the one on Thurlow and preferred that. Thai basil is between food court food and a full on restaurant with servers. The inside is pretty small, about the size of a regular coffee shop. You have to order food and get water by going up to the front desk and there were no servers other than to bring you the ordered food. I was completely okay with the lack of servers since I've always found this more convenient anyways. The set up makes it perfect for eating alone or having a quick meal while studying. The food is ready pretty quickly. The combo (and other dishes) are very affordable and the serving sizes are more than I've seen at other Thai places. The taste is pretty good considering the price and they are not stringy with the amount of meat. They didn't have different spice levels here. I thought the curry was good, but I've heard that the dishes here are hit-or-miss. read more

If you are looking for very good, authentic Thai food eatery then you must eat at Thai Basil West Broadway !! I've travelled and lived in Thailand. Finding tasty, inexpensive real Thai food in Vancouver until now has been hit and miss. The restaurant is smaller in size but delivers a great menu selection, quality food with good proportions of whatever might suit you. The staff is hard working and polite. Quick to offer some suggestions for those who might be less knowledgable about what's what. The head cook is Thai, most of the staff is as well I believe. My sever was speaking Thai, but perhaps she was Japanese. She was patient and good spirited ! Eating is quick and simple, self serve and is great value for the money.
