WOW, just WOW! Came in here on Friday night with my boyfriend and his family who are locals. Make sure to make a reservation because this is a cute, but small restaurant. We were quickly sat, and I ordered the blood orange margarita, yummy and strong, just how I like my cocktails. I ordered the special of the say which was a bbq thai salmon, it was probably the salmon I have ever tasted. My boyfriend got the seafood linguini, with prawns and chunks a lobster and veggies. I cant even tell you how creamy and delicious the sauce was. It is a little pricey, but the quality and quantity of food was definitely worth it. Sadly one star in spite of good food and drinks. Why? Well it is my birthday, which the waiter knew. A midweek dinner with probably 5 tables trying to enjoy the not inexpensive special night out. BUT, one table of six unbelievably loud party people made such obnoxious noise for over an hour that we could hardly hear one another. The only time there was some peace and quiet was when they got some food. I think the restaurant lost a lot of good customers tonight by not moving them along. Very thoughtfully prepared food! Absolutely bursting with flavour. You can tell they put a lot of effort and love into this place. Everything from service, to food and drinks is great! We had lamb rolls for an appy, chicken curry and pork chop for mains, and cheesecake for dessert. Everything was very tasty. Portions were generous. We ended up packing half of the curry to go. We had reservations for 5:00. When I made the reservation the representative did not mention the restaurant opens at 5:00. Like good customers, we arrived about 15 minutes early. Another gentleman was also there and waiting outside. It was raining and windy with no awning or anything to provide any relief from the elements. There were at least 2 employees who did their best to avoid eye contact. Soon, 4 more people arrived. Having a banking background I understand the need for security. As I assessed the situation, if I were the owner or manager, I would want employees to let the customers in! A simple comment such as, "I'm sorry we're not able to serve you yet. Oh my goodness this place was awesome! There was so much sophistication in every bite! We had the seared tuna and croquettes as appetizers and Jambalaya which all was outstanding! It was a quaint place that you did not have to get dressed up to go to, and the food was better than some of the fine dining we have had. The owner came out to greet us. His attention to detail with pairings and flavors was phenomenal. We didn't even have to think about seasoning. The food was so impressive. The waitress and staff were amazing as well. My mother, previously a nurse with some personal harrowing experiences with food poisoning, and I sat down and Collin asked us what we'd like. My mother started and asked for their filet mignon served well, and said that she's even ok if they have to butterfly it to make sure it's completely well. We were flabbergasted when we were met with resistance, Collin said that the chef is "proud of his product" and therefore unwilling to serve his beef well done to meet a customer's preferences. They can serve it a certain way but they wouldn't butterfly it due to the chef's preference. I've been to many Michelin rated restaurants, NEVER have I gone to a restauraunt with the audacity to say that the chef's preference is over ours. Collin was very proud of the fact that they weren't willing to budge and made sure that we got his name and that we appreciated that they are a family owned business so that can serve their food however they want. read more

Let tonight be a lesson to me - don't always stick to the same old haunts. Be willing to expand your horizons. For a few years I have heard from local friends that I HAD to go to Castaways. But I have my favorites that I hit in Cannon Beach, so I failed to go - until tonight. One word - amazing! Wonderful ambience. I sat in the bar and saw one of my friends that has been telling me to try it. I started with a Makers Sour - excellent. Big thanks to my bartender/server/hostess of the evening. I decided to have two signature items - the seafood chowder and the crab fritters. Both were fantastic. The chowder had excellent flavor with prawns and crab. The fritters had many layers of excellent flavor. If I could only choose one to have next time I really can't say which it would be. A MUST stop in Cannon Beach. Glad I finally made it in. THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WITH KIDS! For the first time in my life I faced discrimination at a restaurant. We reached there with our baby in the stroller. The gentleman came outside, looked at us, then at the stroller, and curtly said there was a wait time of 60mins. As we turned around, two ladies walked upto him and he politely told them the wait time was 20mins for the same table for 2! If you want to discriminate, at least be smart about it. He could have waited until we had left to tell them the real wait time. This place might have good reviews, but they discriminate against people with kids/babies. If you really dont want families, just post it outside instead of insulting people. Shameful! read more

He food here may be great -- we won't know. We showed up for our reservation to be berated by the hostess who had us down for 6:30 rather than 7:30. While it is possible we got it wrong (as my wife quickly granted), I have rarely seen such a rude handling of the situation. Rather than acknowledge a miscommunication, the woman just kept saying 'no, I am sure, I have it down'... now we can't seat you for another 45 minutes. Here's the kicker -- we were in the Hotel 5 minutes away killing time. She acknowledged they had our number but were too slammed to call (for the entire hour, presumably)... We appreciate good food and were looking forward to the place, but in a service industry, repeatedly talking down to customers when you clearly haven't helped the situation is often the beginning of the end. For me, seeing someone so rude to my wife who did nothing but apologize is enough -- one less cover for the night and one potentially enthusiastic customer lost. My husband and I went here for dinner and drinks while celebrating our anniversary during a weekend stay at Cannon Beach. We decided to try Castaways one evening based on the very positive Yelp reviews and the fact that it's hard to go wrong with a fun tiki bar. Our overall experience exceeded expectations and we highly, highly recommend this fun restaurant! All of the food was exceptional. Everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavour. The curried prawn dish was fantastic, even my husband who's generally not a fan of seafood dishes raved about it when he helped me finish the last few bites. The chicken skewers appetizer was also very good, it comes with two dipping sauces, a plum and a peanut, both were delicious! The drinks here could be a little bit more interesting they're not as extravagant as some at other tiki bars we've been to but nonetheless everything we tried was great. If you like Mai Tai's or you don't like Mai Tai's get the Mai Tai! I'm usually not a Mai Tai fan but after trying my husbands I ended up ordering one myself because it was so good. The staff are another reason our time at Castaways was so wonderful. Despite how busy it was everyone was very friendly and service was prompt. It was clear the staff truly care about their guests having a good experience, the chef even came out at one point to stop by a few tables, including ours, and ask how everything was. Anyway, I could keep rambling on about what a good time we had at this restaurant but I'm sure Yelp would like me to end this review at some point. FINALLY, such a relief to have real cuisine in Cannon Beach! We missed our chance because of packed house on Saturday, but had a wonder sleepy Sunday quiet dinner. After two failed attempts at finding good food, we hit the jackpot with Castaways. The server was hip, knew the menu, and was sweet to talk to to. You could tell she genuinely cared and enjoyed her job. The food was satisfying and delicious. The Big Kahuna Ahi Tuna was beautifully presented and perfectly portioned. My boyfriend had the Curried Prawns which were perfectly spiced to the desired heat temperature, and the curry was flavorful and creamy! I can't say enough about how great this place is. The menu is varied, and I want to keep coming back to try everything on it! We arrived before they opened at 5 so we could sit right away - if you arrive after 5:16 or so you can expect a 45 minute wait, but it's worth it - if you give them your number they will call when they are ready. The people were all wonderful - very nice and enthusiastic about the food and drinks offered. The food was spectacular - I had the seared scallop appetizer (the special) and the chicken haystack, which was fabulous - chicken, goat cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions in a pastry shell. My husband had the chicken skewers, which were lovely, and the incredibly flavorful and perfectly spiced jambalaya. I had several delicious drinks from the tiki bar. As I am re-reading these reviews after our experience last night, I am wondering if we ordered poorly. To start--the staff was incredibly nice and we were seated immediately because the bar was empty, so that was nice for 6:30 on a Saturday in peak tourist season. Sadly, the food was incredibly sub par. The restaurant and prices gave off a vibe of a trained chef. The food was something a 20-something year old male would make trying to impress his first real girlfriend. The prawn linguine had a very odd soupy red sauce with uncooked cherry tomatoes and large asparagus shavings that seemed incredibly out of place. The curried prawn dish was a bit better, but as some other commenter mentioned, not sure blueberries belong in this dish either. Lastly, we had the Texas egg roll appetizer that was basically spicy cream cheese fries in an egg roll wrapper. It was absolutely horrible. We had the same weird encounter with the chef asking about our meal (which was very nice but we too had to lie through our teeth). We were sorely disappointed at this $100+ meal. read more

Delicious, pure and simple. We had the butternut squash fried raviolis and the burrata cheese appetizers to start. The fried raviolis were NOT greasy at all. So good! The burrata was delicious, and the figs and tomatoes that came with it were a surprise taste delight. Our main courses were the Louisiana Mop and the filet. We ordered the mop with 1 star of spice and that was perfect. Still spicy but not "burn your mouth off" spicy. Just right. The pasta was al dente with GREAT flavors all around and totally delicious with every bite. The filet was "melt in your mouth" delicious. We ordered it medium rare, and the chef's delivered big time. Cooked to perfection. With the lobster cream sauce on top, it was unreal. Highly recommended. We came here on a rainy Saturday and luckily got the second to last table for two. They drinks a good, but strong. Be aware. Staff is friendly, even though they were pretty slammed. We had the crab fritter which were wonderful. Crispy outside and tons of crab on the inside. They are served with tasty pineapple salsa, a perfect paring. The chowder was a bit under seasoned, but had a ton of meat. I added a bit of salt and was just okay. The pork is a great dish as well as the jambalaya. Plenty of food to share. We came back at 5:21 and the same "reserved" tables that were empty at 5 were still empty. But the guy would not even acknowledge us standing right in front of us. He just kept wrapping silverware in napkins! Unbelievable customer service by an industry that has been hit hard by lack of business. I settled for the amazing Filet Mignon with mash potatoes and veggies. I also couldn't resist trying their Seafood Chowder. Zero point zero Never have I seen a place work so hard to turn away business. That's just what happened here last night. I have absolutely no idea what they are doing here, refusing business can't be a solid strategy. Not taken reservations annoys me, but we were starving from a long travel day and didn't mind giving it a try. We walked past a clearly disgruntled couple on our way to check in. Here's where it all went wrong. We were quoted an hour wait. A quick glance around the tiny house showed no less than four tables empty, clean and just waiting. Waiting for what? I have no idea. We took it outside and chilled for a bit waiting things out. That other couple sensed our mutual frustration and we bonded over our shared dilemma. Why are we waiting when there are empty tables?!? After killing a few minutes, we thought we'd have a beer at their bar and watch the game that was on. Not so fast. The Louie CK looking host was now working at the bar. My wife was checking out the taps, wondering if perhaps someone might move to free up two seats together for us or how about this...maybe an employee would step in and help us pass this ridiculous wait. I'm still red hot about what happened next. This jerk yelled at my wife that he couldn't have her standing at the bar! She gave me a jaw dropped look and we both nodded and said "We're outta here!" After we stormed out, we got a clueless call about our table being ready. Way to be on top of things guys. A one trick pony of being one of the few restaurants in a busy coastal town swarming with people. Go elsewhere, unless you feel like dealing with some tool that thinks he is working the velvet rope at Studio 54. read more

First of all, let me start by saying that I was really looking forward to eating at this restaurant. All the reviews were really good & on a good night, they're probably spot on. Tonight was not that night. The front of the house was nice & friendly, it was the back of the house that I had a problem with. The head chef in particular. We were sitting at the table right by the kitchen door, which I don't mind at all, but as soon as we sat down the chef was yelling at his kitchen staff. Dropping the f- bomb more times than I could count. Being a chef myself, I can understand, but you're supposed to check your problems at the front door & get through dinner service. You don't walk off the line 4 different times. That's not what a professional chef does. The couple behind us walked out, because they couldn't take his yelling anymore. We finally got our dinner, 45 minutes later, & my jerk chicken was dry as cardboard. So, I ate the veg & rice, I lost my appetite the chef was yelling & cussing so much. I realize this may sound like an oxymoron, but there's nothing more American than Castaway's Tini Tiki Hut. As soon as you walk in and sit down, the history becomes apparent. Josh, the owner/chef opened this place himself a few months back after honing his chops in Jamaica. The cool thing is that you can get meals and cocktails here that you can't get anywhere else, especially in Cannon Beach. Josh has really taken the time to create some truly original drinks that really compliment the well thought out dishes. Another cool thing is everyone here is really friendly and wants to be there. I love the local, small business mentality and try to support it whenever I can. If you prefer generic food in a corporate atmosphere served by people who have to wear uniforms, hate their jobs, and check the clock every ten minutes, might I recommend the Lumberyard up the street?? The meal came out like I ordered a #4 from a local Teriyaki dive. I love good swamp seed, and appreciate when it's done right, but you left Mt Rainier on my plate that tasted like a nuked cupcake... The Ahi was great.. but plate it with a fresh salad...you live in an area with so much fresh produce!!!!... I think overall, it's a decent tourist restaurant, but the arrogance of table conversation without meaning causes me to think either a) you don't mind soliciting my feedback while I'm paying for my meal (wasting time) or b) the table service is part of the kitchen checklist. read more

I took my girlfriend here during a birthday stay at Cannon Beach. They opened at 5:00, we arrived at 5:15, at which time we had to overcome the Cannon Beach parking problem. We entered and we're seated IMMEDIATELY. We ordered the "chowder" and dungeness crab fritters for starts. Forget everything you knew about chowder because this place rewrote the book. The seafood was bountiful with salmon, prawns, etc. They give you an extra large spoon for this chowder, your going to need it. The dungeness crab fritters were AWESOME, the presentation alone was world class. We each ordered a cocktail, one hurricane and one zombie. Both were absolutely fantastic. .....and one was all we needed. For dinner I went with the Fillet and my other have had the Ahi Tuna.......stellar! Service was top notch, right at the point of making sure you are happy, without being a bother either. Service, TOP NOTCH, food, TOP NOTCH, cocktails, TOP NOTCH. Which is a double edge sword, I do not see how they can improve, it's that good, it can only go down. How good was it? For my first time ever I tipped 30%, it's that good. read more

First, let me say that I am generally a food snob. I'm very particular because I know what I like. I eat nearly everything, but want what I eat to be delicious, and not just fill my stomach. Castaways was a breath of fresh air, in a small town that needs more good, simple, delicious restaurants. Cannon Beach has 3 - 4 different styles of restaurants. 1. Tourist Food 2. Crap Food 3. Deliciousness #1 definitely serves a purpose in Cannon Beach, as the town is more touristy than most other Oregon beach towns. I can't fault or even dislike this type of food, as it's goal is to make sure people know that adequate food can be found here. #2 is all over the place, in the local pubs, even in the supposed nice, local fish restaurants. There is no excuse for the garbage food in this town. We ate at four different restaurants during our last visit. We found a worm in a salad at one, and the other dinner outing was just uninspired and ridiculously expensive #3 was Castaways. We were incredibly surprised. The Yelp reviews are dead-on with this place (4+ stars). The cocktails were delicious, and very well described by our waiter. They were simply structured and weren't pretentious. The food that arrived at our table was well presented and assembled, and beyond affordable. When we left Castaways, my wife said that she'd return the next day. We should have, as our meal at the large fish restaurant in town turned our stomachs, was 2x the price of Castaways, and didn't cast a positive light on the otherwise wonderful town. To summarize, and not get long-winded, I believe that Castaways Tini Tiki Hut is one of, if not THE BEST, place to eat in Cannon Beach. read more

This place is kind of surprising as the name would not imply a high quality food experience. However, after reading several reviews it seemed that there was something special about this Tiki restaurant tucked away on the north side of Cannon Beach. The place is fairly unassuming, located next to a Mexican restaurant in a small building just off the main strip in town. The interior is straight up tiki bar, with tiki masks, bamboo, and everything else you would think of. The menu however consists of dishes that I would not expect in a standard tiki bar. The tiki drinks themselves are very good, I've had several at this point and all were excellent. For food, my favorite item is the Cajun Mac and cheese , which comes with andouille sausage and can be ordered with a heat level between one and five. This is hands down the best mac and cheese dish I have had, even beating out the mac and cheese dishes I've tried at some of my favorite places in Portland. I usually get it at a two or three levels spice which has a good kick and still remains very balanced. The pork chop dish I had previously was also very good, perfectly tender and very flavorful. I will say that my most recent visit here I ordered the jerk chicken dish and the chicken was somewhat dry. The flavors were still spot on, so I wonder if it was just a new chef in the kitchen or if the dish is normally like this. Definitely expect to wait, especially during the busy season in the summer or even on weekends in the winter. The place is not super large, and as you can see from looking at the reviews of the restaurants in Cannon Beach, it is one of only a few that are well received. The other that I've been meaning to try is the Irish table, however it was closed in January when I was here so I'm assuming it opens during the tourist season only. Overall this place is a must if you are looking for something unique and delicious while staying at Cannon Beach. All the entrees are between 18 to 25 dollars, so this is not a place to go if you're looking for something more affordable. read more

It took all the self control I could muster to not rub my man bits on this place and its food. Delicious sexy cocktails... Amazing food... Great service. Our server was a smokin hot MILF that had only been working for a few days. She was funny and attentive and seemed to know the menu well. Our cocktails were delicious boozy cocktails made with fresh ingredients and in big people glasses... that was a good start! I like booze! I think any meal that is not preceded with at least one cocktail is a wasted meal. Any meal that is preceded by 7 cocktails is a wasted me. We had the East Meets West Thai Sate` Chicken as an appetizer with it's 4 delicious and unique dipping sauces... freakin amazing... For dinner, my beautiful sex partner had a ridiculous delicious Wagyu Beef Filet-Cut Sirloin smothered in mushrooms and onions and an amazing demi sauce with creamy mashers and fresh, not overly cooked zuchinni. I had a Jamaican Jerk Pork steak with the same delicious sides. It was a little weird being at the coast and not having the typical bucket of clams or some kind of seafood. It was definitely worth the departure though. The food was relatively reasonably priced. The flavors were amazing. The portions were perfect (I hate giant portions... these weren't, but still we weren't able to completely finish either meal). The food was delicious. I had read the reviews before coming so I knew reservations were required. Only thing keeping it from a five star review is the halibut portions. Excellent food and unusual menu. So nice to have the standard fish and chip,fare you find at beach locations. I had at jerk chicken, it was juicy and the spicy exotic flavors were wonderful! It was served with a mango salsa and rice...terrific! My wife had the waygu steak and this missed the mark. It was chewy, something waygu should NEVER be. And we got a lecture that it would be cooked to the chef's the, not my wife's. A little snooty for a glorified beach snack. But the server was a lot of fun, witty but not over the top and the enormous dessert...a play on bananas foster with the addition of macadamia nuts was mind blowing. Defiantly worth a stop.
