How I wish we lived closer, although my wallet is probably happy that we don't! Simply put, there is SO much deliciousness in this one building that I'd eat there every day if I could. It's THAT good! A friend was in town from Washington DC and the three of us went to the coast. I found this restaurant and liked the reviews, so we showed up right around 5 pm for an early dinner. Lucky for us there was a table available. Sadly the restaurant does not seem to have a website with their menu online, and I simply cannot remember all that we ordered. I know my Sweetheart ordered the Jerk Chicken, because I was worried that it might be too spicy. I was wrong, as it was AMAZING. We all had a taste and the chicken was perfectly moist and well flavored. He says he'd go back and get it again without even thinking about the long drive! I had the Caribbean Curry but with chicken, and it was delicious. Our friend had the Tuna ... Sashimi? I had a bite and it was great, and totally what I (a nervous nelly when it comes to fresh seafood) had not expected. We ordered two deserts and they were HUGE and YUMMY! OMG! Our friend is teeny tiny and she packed away most of one desert all by herself, and my Sweetheart knocked off the brownie dessert - and he doesn't like chocolate! I'm sorry I don't remember all the names of things. What I clearly remember is our fabulous server - he was SO much fun and very knowledgable about the menu. He didn't hesitate to ask the kitchen about MSG in their food, and came back with information that I could safely eat everything. YAHOO!! NO headache hangover from MSG'd food! The food, ambience, music, and service was great! I had the Haystack Chicken and my boyfriend had the ahi--both delectable in flavor and to the eye! We enjoyed the banana flambé for dessert, and although it was a bit more than we could muster at that point, the flavors complemented a wonderful meal. Based on Yelp reviews, we chose Castaways and are pretty happy we did. As many know, Cannon Beach isn't a culinary destination, so we've struggled to find good food in such a beautiful place. We've been here twice and had two good experiences. The service has been great, though I do get the sense that it's a family that runs the place, so that means it may not take much to get on their bad side as a few other reviews have mentioned. The restaurant itself isn't gigantic and it can be a squeeze to get in the door. In the winter, though, it's nice and cozy inside, so that's a plus. Both times we ate here I ordered the jambalaya. It's not like the jambalaya I have in New Orleans, but it's good food. Be aware that their food runs on the spicy side, so if you're someone who usually orders 3/5 stars, you probably only want 2/5 here. I think that brings up one other point: I wouldn't label this a cajun/creole restaurant. That isn't meant to be an insult. As I said, we've had two good experiences here and are planning a third next month. However, as someone who lived in the south for a long time and has been to many cajun/creole restaurants, putting that label on Castaways may cause new customers having that cajun/creole expectation to be disappointed in what is otherwise a great place to eat. Once again another outstanding meal at Castaways. The Ahi app was perfect, the seafood soup delicious and both Prawn dinners we had were delicious, full of flavor and beautiful. The newly remodeled dining room is an added bonus and feels much more in keeping with the caliber of food served yet is still very comfortable and lacks the pretension of some of CB's supposed fine dining establishments. Great service from both the front and back staff, would return because of that. Portions are good sized as well, not huge, but definitely not small. Flavors combinations were unique but also began to be redundant. The curry of the curry prawns felt one dimensional. The dish was good, but my palate was yearning for more after a few bites. It was difficult to distinguish the flavors of cumin, turmeric, and other spices one may find in curry. The prawns did not add to the depth of the dish as I felt they could have. Delicious dinner and fantastic service! It's clear that the owners take pride in the quality of food, selection of menu items, service and ambiance. We had two appetizers (ahi and scallops) both were delicious - perfectly prepared with unique presentation. Also split a cup of the seafood chowder, which was to die for! Our main courses were the Bacon and Blue Pork and the Halibut special. Both were outstanding. The server and owners were friendly, service quick and attentive. Can't say enough about this place. Very rude staff and unprofessional. I walked in and did not see the Reservations Only sign. A staff member was rude to me when I asked if I could sit in one of the three empty bar seats, and he acted like I was being a*shole, and I was not at all. He could have behaved much more professional, but butt headed with me right away. I do not recommend this restaurant based on the rude staff. read more

The food is extremely delicious especially the pawns. I loved the pineapple curry special. The sauce is to die for. I honestly wouldn't mind swimming in those noodle. Lol. They had large pieces of crab in it too. The pineapple chili drink was a perfect combination. Must go and can't wait to come back. Only thing is this place books up extremely quickly so you do have to set up reservations in advance. The only thing I didn't care much for is the scallops for $18, they were extremely small. This place seemed to be crowded every time my family passed by the area. It's a small restaurant, but the interior was kind of cute. We came here at 5pm to avoid waiting. The lady who served was super energetic and friendly. We ordered the salmon (special of the day), Jambalaya, and the Caribbean curry chicken. The salmon was grilled nicely, still moist. It came with some grilled veggies and cucumber yogurt sauce. Kind of wish we had some more veggies or salad with the salmon. I had the curry chicken and it's creamy and sweet. There's mango and some blueberries (as garnish) in it and it was alright. Not a fan of a sweet curry, just my personal taste. The jambalaya was the best. A bit salty, but the flavor is quite unique. I don't know what spices were used but definitely never tasted anything like it. It was a good restaurant to try for the experience of it but it was a bit pricey. read more

Went here before COVID and it was under the same management. Over a year later I still remember how I left feeling very disrespected. Head chef Josh was extremely loud, rude, and drunk. Talked to other tables for an hour after we ordered and food arrived cold when he finally got around to cooking it. Chef Josh chased after me and my partner after we left and tried to make all these excuses for the bad experience. It's unprofessional to make such excuses. He also very much got in my space and touched my face at one point. I was mortified with how rude he was and I vowed never to return to this restaurant. DO NOT GO. I am usually extremely patient and understanding of small town family-owned places but I am shocked this restaurant is still in business. read more

We had dinner here on a weeknight. From the outside, it looks like a little shack, but the inside is bright and cheerful. We were promptly seated and the waiter brought us waters. I decided to start off with the Pineapple Jalapeno Margarita, which was delicious. I tried my friends drink, which she ordered on the recommendation of our waiter (possibly the hurricane?), and it was amazing! As an appetizer we ordered the Texas Egg Rolls. There were three of them and they were served with a dipping sauce. The flavor was great, but they were pretty spicy. I also ordered a cup of the seafood chowder. It was full of different types of seafood and the bisque was perfectly seasoned. For my entrée I went with the Cajun Macaroni and Cheese. I probably would not call this macaroni and cheese, but it was still delicious. It had corkscrew pasta and pieces of sausage and was covered in a zingy and creamy cheese sauce and was topped with more cheese. It was also served with a piece of toasted bread that was great for dipping in the sauce. The portion was huge (I couldn't finish it) and the flavor of the sausage and cheese sauce were the perfect combination. This dish was excellent! I am a nerd and love restaurants and bars that decorate their bathroom consistent with the theme of their restaurant. The bathroom at Castaways kept with the subtle tiki bar theme and was really cute and clean (an accomplishment since it is co-ed). Overall we really enjoyed this restaurant and I would definitely eat here again if I was in the area. It is on the pricier side of some of the other restaurants in Cannon Beach (most meals are around $20), but the food and service are excellent so it is definitely worth it. read more

What a fantastic meal at Castaways!! We were at the coast to celebrate a bachelorette weekend! Firstly the cocktails were delightful, Heaven in a glass! The food was incredible, we shared 3 appetizers the crab cake, coconut shrimp and poke, the poke was the best! Very good! Then we all had a different entree. They were all amazing! The curry shrimp was out of this world! The filet perfect, the jerk chicken was the bomb and the seafood fettuccine to die for! Our waiter, Colin was amazing and took wonderful care of us, we realized we had an amazing unique connection with him and we left the restaurant feeling like it was our most enjoyable meal in a long time!!!! If I could give negative stars, I would. Everything started out wonderfully...great music, perfect cocktails and wonderful crab fritters. The lobster bisque was great and so was our jambalaya. The guests seated next to us were also amazing! Then it all changed...we said the wrong thing...we're Seahawks fans...and one of us is a Husky (I'm a Coug...Go Cougs!). Josh, the owner, was so annoyed with our presence. Told us that Seahawks fans are the worst f$@&ing fans. I'm born and raised in Seattle so I'm a diehard Seahawk. Let's leave the college football out of this rating. I couldn't hear everything that was being said because I was talking to the wonderful woman seated next to us but I could hear Josh saying as he walked by "it's time for you to get the f$&k outta here". From the kitchen I could hear "f$&@ing Seahawks didn't win a playoff game this season" (Josh is a Dallas fan). Most of his comments were made while he was walking by or in the kitchen where we could hear him. His wife or girlfriend kept telling Josh to be quiet. Josh told her to shut the f$&@k up. I was so offended. I feel so sorry for her...she was great! I sat there quietly while my husband tried to be "Switzerland" as Josh kept making comments and putting us down. I quickly paid and then had enough. And told Josh he needed a Valium. I didn't appreciate how he kept making comments back and forth. Well then it got worse...he called me a b$&@h and I turned to walk away and push my husband out the door who was livid with a man talking down to his wife. My thumbs are getting tired...so I will say ultimately...Josh came out of the restaurant and took a swing at my husband. Yes, I'm telling you the truth. The owner tried to punch my husband. Another cook came out and told us to leave...we were happily leaving. I thought to go to the police...still debating. The food was good. But the service was unacceptable (going to talk to my lawyer). You probably don't believe this review as I still can't believe I'm typing this. Go here if you have no opinions, like Dallas and the Ducks. We live in Seattle and eat out weekly. We've never been treated this poorly in our lives. Cannon Beach is such a wonderful place and we've met so many wonderful people this experience completely blows our mind. WOW.....absolutely fantastic!! Let's start with the appetizer. Local crab crostini that had a simple drizzle of sauce that was to die for!! We shared a bowl of lobster bisque that was so flavorful, and full of meaty bites. We shared our two entrees three ways, and were so glad we did. We walked into the bar area with 4 seats open. We sat down and a person came over and said she has to check with the owner or manager because she thought the bar seats were reserved. She returned and said yes the bar seats are reserved. I have never been to a restaurant where the seats at the bar ar reserved. Esepcally considering they had to check with someone a manager to make sure. The entire experience left me with a weird feeling about this place. I'm not sure what the deal was and don't care. We were looking for a place to eat dinner one of the first nights while we were in Cannon Beach and stumbled upon this quaint restaurant. We definitely didn't expect the amazing quality food that we received. I ordered the Caribbean Curried Prawns and my fiancé had the Cajun Mac and Cheese. We loved this place SO MUCH that we went back for a second time a few days later! That visit, we had the Haystack Chicken and the Bacon and Bleu Pork Marsala and that definitely did not disappoint! My husband and I got takeout from here last week. They squeezed us in if we were willing to come early, which was very generous given they were short staffed and having COVID restrictions.
