We stop at the Blue House in Vernonia regularly when we ride the Banks-Vernonia State Trail. We absolutely LOVE the food here! Our favorite item is the giro sandwich. It's delicious with a great pita, perfectly flavored lamb-beef giro meat, tzatziki sauce, etc. The size of the sandwich is very generous. It's the best giro sandwich we have found in the Portland area. Highly recommended. read more

Our first order of business in Vernonia was to get our Greek on, and where better to pop in for lunch than the Blue House Café? Blue is definitely the operative word when it comes to the interior décor: everything from the walls, to the seats, to the little bottles and glasses on the mantle over the counter share a deep, radiant cerulean hue that creates a nice, casual, welcoming ambiance. I like it. Instead of table service, ordering is done at the counter; grab a table of your choice (indoor or out; there's a little patio up front, and on the side as well), and your order will arrive in a reasonably short amount of time. My wife and I split the Dolmades platter, hummus with pita bread, and a side of beef/lamb with tzatziki. The Dolmades were thankfully fresh, handmade and delicious: too many casual Mediterranean places skate by on the canned stuff, which is vastly inferior to the real thing. In fact, these were the best I've had anywhere. Similarly, the only flaw with the hummus and the meat is that we ran out of them; we would have ordered more, if we weren't stuffed already! True to the name, you can order all manner of coffee, tea and espresso drinks here, as well as a small selection of ice cream, pastries and other desserts (baklava!). Other available beverages include a complimentary water station, seasonal lemonades, and alcoholic options such as beer, wine and...gluhwein? Okay, *THAT* is a little out of place, but I do enjoy a mug of the stuff on occasion...but usually only on a cold winter evening. I couldn't see myself sucking one down on a hot midsummer's day, as it was during our visit. But hey, to each their own! Despite being swathed in sapphire and absorbed in its azure ambiance, it's impossible to feel blue after dining here at the Blue House Café! Although our experience in town is limited, there doesn't appear to be a finer dining option anywhere in Vernonia. Very recommended, all around! read more

Great Greek food, had their massive Gyros, yummy! Disappointed that they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays when were last in town.

The Blue House is simply the best restaurant in Columbia County and is as good as one could wish for anywhere. I only visit the restaurant 2-3 times a year, making the trip from Scappoose, but I am always pleased and impressed by the excellent food and the friendly service. The family run restaurant is indeed a gem. The only negative is (the well deserved I am sure) lengthy vacation that the owners take every winter to revisit the old country. read more

Wow! I didn't expect this place to be a quality destination restaurant. They exceeded expectations quite nicely. I ordered a Lamb Gyro Sandwich and had an Arnold Palmer. The owner informed me that they make the lemonade individually for each order. That's very rarely done. I was in for a treat! My sandwich was excellent! The lamb was juicy and fresh, the sandwich was huge. The bread was warm and very tasty. They gave me a tiny side of two black Kalamata olives and some sliced peperoncinis. The servers were quick. My Arnold Palmer was fantastic! The fresh lemonade was tart and not to over powering. A truly great drink instead of the pedestrian norm. It's a great spot. read more

Hot from bike riding? Thirsty from shopping? Don't feel like cooking? Then this is the spot to go if you are in Vernonia. Mediterranean eat in, or sit on their patio and enjoy some fresh air. Meat and vegetarian options available. My favorites were the babaganooj (smokey eggplant dip), zaatar flatbread, red pepper dip, tzatziki sauce, and the salads. Portions weren't huge but were good. Vegetarian dolmas were filled with slightly sweet beans which was fun. I tried a couple of the different flavored lemonades and like the rosewater one best so far. We took an early morning bike ride from Stub Stewart State Park to Vernonia and back on the Banks/Vernonia bike path. I had previously looked at Yelp for some ideas and this place stood out. Most people loved it and so we thought we would ride to it and give it a try. We arrived lamenting that we had not brought our bike locks with us. As we rounded the corner we spied on the front window that there was bike parking inside the restaurant. What a great idea. That quickly became my favorite thing about this place but it got better. We ordered and also wanted some water. They have cups and a water cooler so you can help yourself. You can also fill up your water bottles there. I ordered a burger which came on their own bread. Very tasty and a side salad that was quite big. All in all a great meal. I stopped in their restroom and they allow writing on the wall. They provide the pens. You must adhere to their rules, however. See the photo. Tasty home cooked Greek food. The YS had some hummus and other greens which was also tasty. Yes, he let me taste. I'm visiting my daughter in Vernonia and we came to the Blue House after swimming in the river with my 2 Granddaughters (what a great community)! Oh my heavens is the food great!! My daughter is a vegetarian and the vegetable platters with various dipping sauces are extraordinary, we especially love the red pepper and baba ganoush dips, yum! We also get the veggies dolmades-savory and delicious. I had the various flatbreads and highly recommend the pesto and artichoke! If you do not have room for food, definitely come just for the variety of hot and cold drinks! The raspberry lemonade and rose lemonade are scrumptious and the Tallab (Jallab?) tea with raisins and pine nuts is a treat- order 1/2 sweetened for a less sugary jolt. I begged to go back a second time and would gladly eat there every day of the week. The neighboring table had the rockin' looking fyros, so swing by! read more

Who knew the best Mediterranean food in Oregon is in Verona and not in Portland. I've been regular of Nicholas and Hoda's for years, but they run a far second to the Blue House. The beef platter was soooo good: the gyro lamb/beef was probably the most tender and favorable I've ever had, the Pita Bread the softest. The Jalab Ice Tea was excellent. The Kanafe was good, but better if served warm (or at least drizzled with warm honey.) The Dolmades were different than the usual thin and rolled kind. I think the counter gal's mom makes all the food. I overheard a few tables comment, "this is so good." One didn't care for the couscous, but loved the flat breads. read more

I have not been here since the shut down but several times over the years before, they may be closed for the reason right now. I recommend calling ahead to make sure they're open before making the drive year round, they do close for family affairs sometimes, but this is a delightful stop when out on the banks-vernonia trail. Their lavender lemonade is the best drink I've ever had (not sure if seasonal), their veggie options are delicious, portions are a bit small for the price but still filling. Their deserts are next level, I'm terrible with the names but I've tried most of them, my favorite was I believe a pistachio baklava. The restaurant itself is very warmly decorated and feels like the family owned restaurant that it is. In the summer months there are lots of bikers stopping by but there's plenty of seating inside and out. We've even sat on the patio with our dogs after walking them at the trails. They closed while were there but didn't chase us off as they were still cleaning up. Very friendly, welcoming place with delightful food. It is worth noting that this is in a rural area though, the town is small and conservative. read more

Fun blue house in the middle of a small town with some excellent food, amazing Mediterranean coffee (I had two cups), and wonderful service! Enjoyed a couple of different combo platters - if memory serves me correctly, one was a gyro platter (the lamb was outstanding!) and the other was a variety of hummus. Had some unannounced musicians swing in and play some great acoustic melodies which added to the eclectic ambiance of this fun place. Will definitely go out of my way to come back again! read more

Five star food like this deserves to be served on linen tablecloths in cozy, candle light! But I can see how the casual atmosphere is popular with bikers of both the motorized and the pedal-powered species (there's even an indoor bike rack). I'd heard good things about Blue House and after only cursory on-line investigations my taste buds were set for Mediterranean cuisine. Along with another couple we drove the 40 minutes on the winding back roads to Vernonia and found the Blue House (in a yellow building) on the foodie side of the Main Street through downtown. When we stepped through the door I was immediately disappointed. This was supposed to have been a bit of a "special" night out with friends, but this place looked like a gyro sandwich and coffee shop, not like a romantic Greek restaurant. It easily seats 50 at plain tables inside and in an exterior alcove out front. You order at a window and bus your own tables. The menu is up on the wall, but they also have photos of their dishes on the bar at the window, and laminated yellow menus you can take to your table and study, which we did. I'd made the reservation for four the day before (not required - there were only two patrons when we arrived at 6:30 on Saturday night, although several more trickled in during our meal). Many of the tables seat just two or three, so the proprietor had placed a large (yellow) "Reserved" sign for us on one of two or three long tables that seat ten or more. Grin. Reasonably priced burgers, gyros and coffees are indeed available, but we settled on platters for three of us and a flatbread entree (Greek pizza) for the fourth, and a sampler "side dish" for an appetizer. I'm sorry I didn't take photographs of all the dishes. The are masterfully prepared and artfully presented. You know this food is going to be good the moment you see it. The pita bread was fresh and warm and wonderful. And the olives, oh my! The lamb was a generous portion, thicker slices than most, cooked to perfection with a fabulous sauce. Everything was just excellent. We probably should have known, but I wish the wait staff would have warned us that the flatbread takes longer to prepare than the other meals. The three of us who ordered platters were halfway through before the flatbread arrived. Also, we were trying some items new to us and asked the waitress about culturally contextual correct modes of attacking them (fingers or forks?), and though she appeared to be a member of the family operation, or so we assumed, she wasn't able to offer us a clue. Now that we know what to expect, I'm fairly confident the next visit to Blue House will merit FIVE (yellow) stars. read more

My wife and I bicycled up to Vernonia from Banks on the Banks-Vernonia Trail and stopped for lunch at the Blue House Cafe. We both opted for the Lamb/Beef Gyro sandwich, one with feta and one without. The sandwich was delicious, one of the best I have had for a while. Very generous portion which I did not think I could finish, but with the 21 mile ride back to the car I managed to store the calories for the return ride. Nice place with several patios, indoor and outdoor bicycle parking, and very nice people. I recommend this cafe. read more

Wow, great food in Vernonia! We ride through Vernonia on our way to Astoria (via Jewel and Berkenfeld, but I digress). Used to dread having to find food in Vernonia, as the choices tended to be bar food or greasy burgers. Not the best for being on the road. Happy to discover the Blue House in Pittsburg a few years ago, and really sad when they appeared to close down, but they simply moved to the main part of Vernonia (hope you're following all this.) Anyway..... Very nice food, very fresh, generous portions, nice people. The new location is very light, airy, open, spacious. The staff are very friendly. Very good selection of coffee drinks and teas. Lots of desserts. Vegetarian and meat dishes. Organic and local ingredients. Wow. read more

I've been here a number of times over the years, it's always been excellent. Today was no exception, re staff was friendly and made reasonable accommodations for my girlfriends dietary needs. The food was excellent and fast. I've had hummus and gyros all over the Middle East and Turkey and the food here was as good as any of the places I've been. (I've never been to Greece so can't compare it to that). I always recommend the Blue House to friends who come this way and will continue to do so. read more

We used Blue House Cafe to cater our rehearsal dinner just down the road at Vernonia Springs and it was a tremendous hit! Guests were raving about it being the best Mediterranean food they've had in years and were delighted by the opportunity to get seconds and even thirds. While the food was fantastic, the service that they provided was equally matched. Extremely thoughtful and supportive customer service throughout preparations, ordering, and pickup. All at an incredible value. While I won't be doing an event on this scale in the area (or perhaps again), I will surely be stopping for a gyro sandwich anytime I'm in the area, and so will many of our guests. What a wonderful place. We are gluten free. We had the chicken gyro, with GF chips on the side rather than the pita bread. Also the Meza platter, orange salad, and the stuffed grape leaves.
