Had dinner at the Klondike Tavern in St. Helens and it was exceptional from start to finish - I'm talking really, really good. I ordered the pasta bolognese and a seasonal lemon drop, and both were genuinely the best I've ever had. The bolognese was rich and perfectly balanced, with deep, slow-cooked flavor and pasta cooked exactly right. Every bite felt thoughtful and well executed. The lemon drop was just as impressive -- bright, fresh, and not overly sweet, with a clean citrus finish that made it hard not to order another. The atmosphere strikes that ideal balance of relaxed and refined, and the service was attentive with a splash of "feels like home." Everything was clearly itemized on our bill, and there were no surprises. It's clear they care about quality and providing a complete dining experience beyond a great plate of food. Large portions, delicious food, well-made cocktails, solid service, and a unique setting compelled us to tip handsomely. It was a great experience. We went here the day after Thanksgiving because we wanted to have something that wasn't the traditional holiday food. And I knew I had to Eat it again on Saturday for a second thanksgiving. So Friday night we came down and had Klondike. And I ordered this lovely egg nog seasonal mocktail drink and then we ordered food, and I had a Mac and cheese with I believe pulled pork? Or brisket? Idk, it's some magical long cooked meat, and pickled onions and i believe I had him add a stupid amount of jalapeños cause I love spicy. I can't even tell you what my wife ordered, honestly I was so into the flavor of the food, and how savory and high quality it was.... She may as well have been invisible lol We had the best waiter, forgive me cause I can't remember his name. But his energy was radiant. And he asked me if I wanted a free refill on the nog, and I said "oh I didn't think this came with a refill, but I'd love one" he ended up grabbing one, and told me it was his mistake it actually wasn't on the free refill part, but he covered it on the house cause he saw how much I loved the first and since he had gotten my hopes up with a second he wanted to take care of me on the house.... It worked out well for him when bill came lol I love when people do this kinda stuff. Also his personality was like an infectious happiness.... Gosh I wish I knew who it was... Anyways.... Give Brooks a raise! Walked in here with my husband when we were visiting St. Helen's for Halloweentown and we absolutely loved this spot. We came back numerous times while we were in town to grab a delicious cocktail. The first time we walked in was right when they opened and Brooks greeted us at the door as he unlocked it. We were able to take up a spot wherever we wanted. The history of this place is SO COOL! Definitely ask the servers and whatnot. The bar is awesome and they showed us how it even changes colors. This place really feels like you're stepping back in time. And the food and drinks are just as good! The truffle fries were definitely my favorite. I also ordered chicken alfredo pasta which was delish, too. The cocktails were *chefs kiss*. Brooks even told me about one with gin that wasn't on the menu yet and I kept ordering that one. This place is magical! We came here for our anniversary a few weeks ago and we had the best time. The staff were extra thoughtful and took the time to make sure we felt welcome. I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere was solid. I was there around 4:45. He got busy. The first thing I ordered on the menu I was really excited for, they didn't have it they were out. I ordered the beat salad, it took 45 minutes. I get cornbread takes longer, but it was way more than the 25 minutes claimed on the menu. When I asked, they said it had been fucked up getting it out of the iron skillet. Then asked like they were doing me a favor by not charging me and not giving it to me. the servers were nice and it was understaffed that's not enough. Make it right people. read more

I have seen this place and perhaps I have been in here before in the way back while coming to Saint Helens to visit Halloweentown. It just seemed so familiar but perhaps that is because this place feels a bit like a friendly hug. I felt comfortable upon walking in and that was not just because I was there with a few friends to attend a Drag Queen Brunch. The show was starting when we got there and the gent working the front door was boom there when we needed him and guided us to our table. What a great space and if they offer another show like what we attended - go to that! If you have a bad time at a drag show you are definitely doing it wrong. But even just for a meal this space seems to be where you should be. I was a bit sad as the afternoon brunch did not have their breakfast offerings and we were stuck with the lunch menu. It was hard to be mad at some of the better fries I have had though. They were pretty perfect. I tried my first Cubano sandwich and that was a respectable morsel I could only finish half of. One thing I was able to grab off their brunch menu was a strawberry lemon drop. That drink got extra points for being beautiful, delicious and coming in a Marilyn Monroe level champagne glass - pretty perfect for the Valentine's Day theme. Food was cold on top of it. 50 something minutes later and the chilaquiles are cold, the grilled cheese is not even melted and cold. We were starving at this point. What would you do-OOH-ooh for a Klondike bar (and grill)? The answer to that question is: wait in line on the patio to order from a limited menu, as the swarming masses that attend the Spirit of Halloweentown event put a bit of governor on what entrées the kitchen here can crank out in a reasonable amount of time. I'm not complaining, just calling it as I saw it, since this was our first visit to the Klondike. Most of the things offered this last weekend were things that could mostly be prepped in advance and kept heated until needed: pulled pork, polenta, chowder, stew, etc. Other grill staples like burgers and dogs, which can be fired continuously in anticipation of orders, rounded out the selection, along with a medley of seasonal cocktails, about half of which had sold out already (around 2pm). Despite the ready-made nature of the entrées, the sheer number of people crammed into the limited patio seating area, awaiting their orders, meant that our order of prawns and polenta still took about 20 minutes. Our meals arrived in to-go boxes with disposable silverware (likely to cut down on dishwashing labor during the peak of the festival); a wise choice on their part, yet not the ideal presentation method for something as...gruel-y as polenta. Still, both of our meals were delicious, although not particularly mind-blowing. The interior of the building looks and feels like a vaguely-Victorian haunted house; an observation reinforced by the after-hours ghost hunting tours being advertised, led by a local "psychic", who was down in the patio area, performing tarot readings until the first tour of the evening. Maybe next time? One thing I noticed (or more accurately *didn't* notice) was the presence of a ramp, or an entrance method that is ADA friendly. If there is one, I didn't see it, which meant I was forced to carry our baby stroller up and down a steep-ish flight of steps. Maybe it's out back, somewhere near the patio? There were too many people to try and investigate. Maybe I should have asked the psychic? Overall, my wife and I enjoyed our visit to the Klondike, despite the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the festival shaking things up a bit. It's easy to tell that this is a quality operation, with good food, great service, and a building with lots of character. All of my critiques should be taken with a grain of salt (and thrown over your left shoulder, for luck). Despite a few ghosts and gremlins tripping things up, we'll be back in the off-season, to see whether the Klondike can exorcise these irksome spirits, and turn them into a delicious cocktail that will pleasantly haunt our memory for years to come! read more

The service was great and the wait time for the meals was not long at all. The truffle fries and the garlic fries were cooked perfectly. I absolutely loved the Brussels sprouts and the squash grilled cheese; the Cuban sandwiches were also huge hits at our table! Joined for brunch during St. Helens' Halloweentown celebration without thinking about how busy they might be. Really impressive how they handled the rush and got us some delicious cocktails while we waited (pluot old fashioned and Room 212 are both recommended!). Space is quaint and comfortable, all the staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was also delicious. We both had burgers which were good sized and tasty, though be forewarned, the blue bacon one was messy! The first time I came in after new owners, our meal was a disaster. We had the fried chicken dinner. I won't even go into particulars as that was a while ago. I vowed to not return. Then, earlier this last fall, my good friend/neighbor and I were chatting about local restaurants and Klondike Tavern came up. My friend said I must try it because food and service was exceptional. I told her what happened when we had gone and she said I must give it another try because menu has changed and it's very good. I thought"well it's been about a year, so maybe Klondike worked out the just opened bugs". My husband, brother and I tried it and to our surprise the entire meal was amazing from the hostess greeting us until the dessert! We've been in several times since and it's been consistently excellent! I've read other patrons felt it was pricey, however I dine in Portland often as well, and though Klondike is on the higher end of the price scale in Columbia County, nothing compares it's menu! And if I am to compare to Portland eateries, it's very reasonably priced and portions are large/easily split between 2 guests. Mind you this is not a local bar or cafe as that's all we seem to have(or fast food joint). This is a dining establishment and you feel like you're going out to dinner(or brunch) from the professional yet friendly staff to the creatively prepared entrees and tasty cocktails to the wonderful desserts. If you want dive bar food and a beer, go to a dive bar. If you want to dine and not have to drive 25+ miles or pay Portland's $150 for 2 meals for an evening out, go to Klondike! read more

They were slammed on Oct 12th Saturday due to the Halloweentown event and the hostess was still kind and did her best to make all seem calm even though people were being very rude to her, she communicated kindly,clearly, and efficiently. Our server was friendly and made the experience better one of the only reason for the 4 stars is because we clearly ordered no mushrooms and there were lots of mushrooms when our food arrived, not sure if it was kitchens fault or the server but they took it back and just removed the mushrooms after making sure it wasn't an allergy which was reasonable and I rather that than wait for them to remake. Either way a good experience due to how they handled when things went wrong and I would come again next time I'm in town. The cocktails are decent, not like a nice Portland cocktail spot but for out here ya can't complain, especially when they do fun garnishes and don't make a big deal if someone asks for a classic cocktail/something that's reasonable off the menu (probably better to go with what they got for special/seasonal drinks) Not bad but not great, 6.5-7/10 on cocktails, espresso martini tasted so much like vodka it was as far as they could push it without it being 100% unenjoyable but it was still cool they did it. A child was screaming right behind me for about 40% of my time there. This absolutely in my opinion does NOT seem like the place to bring a screaming child, there are plenty of other places in town where that's much more respectful and suitable. Not the restaurant's fault though, but no children would be a great policy but they would probably lose money so not gonna happen I'd say, which is reasonable. So it is what it is I guess just hope you're not near a screaming child when you're trying to have some cocktails, a nice dinner and relax. Nice art on the walls. Nice employees. When my drink were empty they quickly checked if I wanted another. My wife and I ate here for the first time yesterday. The food was great and I loved eating in a spooky old tavern/hotel. The thing that impressed me most was the service. Our server was working so hard to take care of all her tables. You could tell she really cares about making sure everyone had what they needed and that her job was done as professionally as possible. I can only imagine the stress and pressure she had, trying to satisfy of all the customers in the place by herself and she did an excellent job. Our server deserves all the kudos in the world for a job well done and as far as I'm concerned, a raise as well. I would love to come back to the Klondike, simply because of her. Food: I will say that the brussel sprouts were delicious! You know that taste of brussel sprouts... it hits you like a ton of bricks. These didn't have that flavor! I could've eaten a whole plate of those. As for the rest of the food, I was bummed to find they were out of paella, so I had the Hoppin' John instead. It's a southern dish that was pretty good, but like many stews, it's great for the first few bites, then I wanted to try something else. My colleagues said the Rockfish was good, but it was rather small. Service: Perfect service, can't complain. Our server was kind, she didn't come by every 5 minutes to check on us and she didn't want to interrupt us when we were talking. A+! Atmosphere: So cool inside, it's like a quaint cottage. The decorations are really cool and the bar was really lit up well. They took an old house and made it into this restaurant. If you didn't know this place was there, you would totally miss it from the street. Price: Fair prices, it's a nice place inside so I don't expect it to be cheap. Overall though, 30-35$ for a good meal that is unique and with nice atmosphere. Overall: The menu was a Little small... that can be a plus OR a minus. Fried chicken, ribeye, pork chops... these are all standard items, I always like to go someplace to get something I have never had or heard of before. So while the food was good, service was great and atmosphere was delightful, I don't see anything else on the menu that I really NEED to try. But you never know if I am in the area again. read more
