We walked in at 8:30 on a Tuesday night. We've never been here before and weren't quite sure what to do... we walked into the bar area hoping to be greeted, both the bartender and another lady made direct eye contact with us and proceeded to ignore us as we stood awkwardly for a few minutes before we just left. I suppose if you aren't a regular you don't get service? It left us feeling super uncomfortable. Also there was a giant grill in the middle of the room, with meat just sitting on it seemingly unattended. The lack of service left a poor impression on me. Interesting establishment, on the good side. Longfellow's has been around for many decades, but this was our first visit. The food is very good. The waitstaff take your order, cook the protein, plate your meal and serve you. The grill for the protein in the center of the dining area, strange but cool. There is an excellent salad bar (disposable gloves provided for sanitation). Good beverage selection. And the prices are reasonable. I had the New York steak sandwich, with a green salad. I ate the hoagie roll as a roll and just ate the 8 oz steak separately ; I think it cost $21.50. Dinner with beers for 4, including tip was $109. In today's world that's darned good pricing. The atmosphere is old school bar, nicer than a dive bar for certain. It's cozy, friendly and there are bar games to be played. We'll be back. read more

Ok So my wife And in laws were in Scappoose after looking at a boat and stoped in for lunch. This place looks kinda dive ish which I'm cool with if it's a good vibe- which it was. The staff was super super nice and very happy to tell us about the salad bar/steaks/burgers. Well, I'm a product of the '80's and love a good Salad bar, my wife started at salad bar and said it was "Legit" and could've just had that. I had the burger which had 4 types of beef which was one of the best burgers I've had. The meat used was same as our local Market of Choice meat and very high end and very good. Great local beers and this is a must go to place to eat. We will be eating here in the future as we will have a boat on the channel soon read more

Visited for my first proper beer outing after businesses shut for the Pandemic. My brother and I went on an excursion to Columbia County. On our way back, hit up Longfellow's. They had the lounge area open with tables of people and lotto machines. Servers at the bar were cordial. They were out of draft beer, so we got a couple bottles and sat at a table, twice they asked if we wanted menus or were staying for dinner. It smelled great of steak - and they have a brick/grill barbecue set up right in the middle of the dining room upon entering. It was in use - steaks looked great. The room we were sat was empty except one other couple. The other patrons near us chatted with us about getting out of the house. The lady said she had her name on a list to play video lottery. Wow! Committed. It was okay, my beer was stale, but kind of to be expected. I enjoyed looking at the old photos they had posted on the wall, most of Columbia County, St. Helens, St. John's Bridge. Nice Stop - nothing too memorable. Clean, clean bathroom, mostly painted a brilliant turquoise. read more

I thought the food and service were okay. The inside is much nicer than the outside. Interesting concept the waitresses cook your meal on a fire grill in the middle of the restaurant. We took a chance from the reviews and like I stated the food was okay. No French fries so we settled on potato salad. We split the burger and they charged $1 for the split which was fine then we ordered an extra side of potato salad and they charge $5.50. I came on a Sunday and had their prime rib special which was super delicious. One of the best I have had. The place had tons of people and I overheard the owner say that they had sold out (I guess people call and reserve meals because it's so popular). Love the salad and desert bar. We have lived in this area for over 15 years and have driven by this place hundreds of times but never stopped in. It does not look very inviting from the outside and we had heard mixed reviews about the place but last night we were looking for something different and decided to give it a try. First the good, the inside is much nicer than the outside, it is warm and inviting and very clean. It is much bigger than I would have guessed also. An unusual feature is a gas powered grill in the middle of the restaurant where the waitress's cook meat orders, you can cook your own if you want. The have a very limited menu mostly meat and potato, though no french fries which they seem pretty proud of. What is a burger without french fries?? I had a chili burger and the wife had the regular burger with a small dollop of potato salad. It is a large patty, 8oz, and seems to be good beef sadly both patties were way over cooked and very hard and dry, even though we requested medium. I watched the waitress cook the meat and each of them turned them over and over and pressed them repeatedly with a spatula to get all of the juice out of them, I guess we should have cooked them ourselves. The chili burger was described as served with cheese and onions which is usual for this dish but they use green onion pieces not chopped onions as most places do. The chili was just ok, more spicy than flavorful and the wife said the potato salad was just ok too. I doubt that we will try it again, but you never know, maybe we will give it a second chance, after all there aren't many choices out here. read more

10SEP2020 Walked in front doors (restaurant side) with my service dog & a family member to have a late lunch. We saw only 2 people eating. Renae immediately approached and asked what my dog was "for". Obviously, I know the ADA allowable questions are: 1) Is this a service dog? &, 2) What tasks have the service animal been trained to perform? I began, "He's my service dog, he makes space for..." Before I could finish detailing what service he does, she interrupted, and said, "He can't be in here". (He was silent and in heel position, mind you.) We are a team and have never been mistreated this way. In shock, I voluntarily offered my doctor's letter, which she flatly refused, telling us to leave. I told her she might want to check with the ADA and she said she knows the law! I was affected deeply by this. The food in the Mexican restaurant next door is excellent and THEY are ADA compliant, like everywhere else we have ever gone. read more

The only thing you won't get here are fries - they choose not to deep fry anything. Ye old dive and steakhouse! Cool little restaurant bar with an interesting history survived the towns 1915 fire because it was the only building made out of brick. I was told it's haunted but didn't see the ghost I had a T-bone steak with all the salad bar you can handle. So load up on the veggies. Longfellow's is the perfect place for an awesome steak and delicious salad bar in the atmosphere of somebody's dark basement. Seriously, this place is dreary. There are no windows and the main entrance spills you right in to the middle of the dining area, so upon your entrance everybody stares at you. But just ignore all of that because their ranch in the salad bar is SO GOOD. I haven't worked up the nerve to ask what kind it is or to even just run in the back and steal a gallon or two of it, but I really want to. If Jesus cried ranch tears, it would be the ranch Longfellow's serves. I also love the open grill and have never been disappointed by the food I order. Sometimes ther service is slow but you just deal with it. I think I just talked myself in to going there for dinner tonight. read more

Ye Old Longfellows tavern. Technically, I'm pretty sure I've been coming here since I was in utero. My parents have been patrons here for over 20 years, and still continue to support this place as they're reaching retirement. Its 'the' meeting place before my dad's band plays a gig in Columbia Co. And now I can order my very own drink here as an adult! EXCELLENT. This place is famous for its steaks, and additionally, the "cook your own steak" option. But let's cut the bullshit, and talk about the ultra-fresh salad bar. Seriously. IT CANNOT BE BEAT. It is the first and last salad bar you'll ever want to visit. First off: fresh rolls, which you (and I do) can toast on the open grill if you'd like. Why wouldn't you? Second, the salad offerings. Julienned pickled beets, sugar snap peas, sliced cukes, sunflower seeds, trashy yet tasty Reeser's macaroni salad, and blue cheese crumbles waiting to be dispersed. Those are just the highlights. And if you buy a steak or chicken dinner, you're allowed to clock in a few trips to the salad bar. Which you will, and no one will judge you. A FEW DRAWBACKS (to be expected): -the bartenders are easily overwhelmed when it's only "kind of" busy, and get a titch bitchy when you approach them at the bar. That's to be expected. -It's a small town, and patrons will automatically know you're not from Scappoose when you walk into the bar and will continue to stare at you until you leave. Oh well. This is the best place in the county for a steak. Always fresh right off the grill to your plate. Salad Bar is always fresh. Their Swiss dip is one of my favorite sandwiches. Beverages are always delicious. Always willing to keep my Roy Rogers heavy on the Roy, light on the Rogers. Dark setting reminiscent of old steakhouses. The food here is amazing! I am super picky about my halibut. They did not disappoint. I stole a few bites of my husband's steak. It was fantastic! My son had the chili burger, he was impressed. Our server was also the chef, she did a great job. I watched her go from table to table and back to the grill, never missing a beat! The building itself is dark. No windows. Which bothered me at first. The world could have been coming to an end outside and I would not have known. The grill is in the middle of the room, so you can watch your meal being cooked. This place was probably the worst Local Tavern I had ever been to. The bartender Angie, was very rude and snobby the whole time. And wouldn't serve me more than three light beers because I turned 21 a month ago, and I live within walking distance of this place. The slot machines were sticky with booze, and the bathroom had crusted up puke on the floor and on the toilet. Definitely will never go here ever again, there is a much better Tavern down the street. read more

2nd time here, after great experience first time. However, this time was awful. Worst steak in my life! When I first cut into the center to test how it was cooked, my knife could barely cut into it, so I tried the edge, which was easier. The taste was awful. When I asked about the seasoning, I was told it was "Monterrey". I could tell it had been over seasoned, especially with added salt, heavy. I did not finish the steak. I just paid my bill and left.
