Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub - Sausage roll

I always want to like it more than I do. I always want to come in, look at the lovely downtown pub…read more(I don't bother with 21st Street), and say "you know what, it's about on par with anything I've seen in Boston, Hoboken, New York, Philly, Baltimore, or Chicago." I want to say it's on par with the better Northwest offerings like the Irish Heather in Vancouver, The Irish Times in Victoria, or Murphy's in Seattle. But I can't. Because every time I'm here I'm just reminded of all the things it isn't. The menu looks somewhat right on paper, but it's little things like the spice and bake on the sausage rolls, the fact that they won't give you curry and chips without ordering the whole chicken entree ordeal, the somewhat dry and mealy burger. Then there are the drinks: There's a Guinness on, but the Magners is in the bottle. And then there's the whole brewpub element that was introduced a few years ago that baffles me. There are so many breweries in town, and so many quality Irish breweries, that I have no idea why you'd brew a middling beer lineup of your own AND make an Irish stout and red, of all things. But the most disappointing part of The Kells is that it's all the worst parts of the pubs in cities I just mentioned without containing any of their finer points. Stripped of history, taplist, menu, and other comforts, it's just a place where suburbanites come into the city, get loud for a few hours, pay their few quid, and leave without doing much else in the area. Compared to the Leaky Roof, T.C. O'Leary's or the city's English pubs like the Rose and Thistle or Moon and Sixpence, The Kells seems detatched and at arm's length from anything. that might resemble a community. I've heard they've done (double-decker English) buses to Timbers and Thorns matches, and I hear they're basically propping up the city's St. Patrick's Day festivities, but there's something artificial to it. It's a shame. I know the founders came from Belfast and I know the family is still very much involved, but although the staff is always pleasant when I come in, there's very little about the place that makes me want to return. It doesn't repel me, but a pub should draw me in more than this one does.

I don't generally give 5-star reviews, but Kells is a Portland treasure. I've never had a bad meal…read morethere. From fish and chips to sausage rolls to Irish stew, it's a rustic Irish Pub that does itself proud every day. Speaking of the fish and chips: They are to die for. The batter is crisp, and the fish is light and tender. The tartar sauce is not cloyingly sweet, and compliments the fish nicely. The fries are delicious as well, and they stay crisp through the meal. in the past, I have had the Reuben, the Sausage roll, and the Irish Stew among others. I recommend them all. Stop by, you will enjoy the rustic atmosphere and the excellent service. Be sure to ask them why there are dollar on the ceiling.

Note-- the reviewer (me!!) was born and raised in Ireland and has left a few particles of his liver in various pubs around the globe. And now onto the show... The wife and I just came off of an incredible pub experience at Nana's in Newport, OR. Great band (St. James Gate), great craic, great food, stiff drinks, grand company, etc. We were anxiously watching and waiting for this spot to open up. Arrived to be greeted by a sign that stated their grand opening, was just a soft opening predicated upon the fact that their liquor license had yet to be issued. I get it. Things happen like that. Being faced with a negative, an owner should throw all they have into drawing folks in despite the lack of stiff drink. (I actually own a pub, and know a wee bit about the "game". 4 green balloons, does not constitute that effort. Also, when we called earlier inquiring about a happy hour, we were told, "we no longer have that." and no other info was offered. End of phone call. You just opened..how can you no longer have that??? Chalking this up to yet another coastal disaster that will be vacant in 6 months, some mates of ours popped out and asked us to join them. Came in to a beautifully decorated establishment, with spot on acoustics. The lad singing and playing guitar in the front of the house (not very well...not totally bad, but not totally good either) could be heard clearly at the back of the house. During our spell there, not one Irish / Celtic song was heard. If I heard one more poorly executed and out of key Neil Young song I was going to vomit. Damn lad...expand your catalogue. Polite / friendly / attentive service from the owner and a a couple of other sexy Irish lasses in short kilts. One was making a critical error in telling customers that it was "okay to leave" when they heard that there was no alcoholic drinks being served. Entice them with the food...the music sure wasn't going to do it. I can promise you that the Triangle Tavern next door and Mary Todd's across the street had a bump in profits from the opening of the pub last night. Quite a few folks at both establishments commented that they came and went. The food prices were fair. My wife who is the brie cheese connoisseur, was disappointed in her order. The brie had some sort of jam added to it prior to baking it that really took away from the flavour of the cheese itself. The grapes were sour, the apples were fine and the two types of crackers were perfect. I had the "Irish stew". The Irish aka we, are not known for food that kicks you in the arse and makes you crave it. We were the inspiration for catsup no doubt. Oh, and corned beef and cabbage isn't traditionally Irish either. I am sorry to share that, but now that you know the truth about Santa, the Tooth Fae, and The Oestra Bunny, you can get a better results from your therapist. Oh, back to the stew... It was a watery mess with very small bits of beef in it, and a blob of mash dumped in the middle with a piece of focaccia bread atop. The Irish are used to things boiled. We like our potatoes in chunks, as we do our meat. We like soda bread, not Italian bread with our "Irish" meal. The flavour was not bad, but it was very watery, messy and odd. All was not lost. We discovered The Triangle Tavern next door, and met some really cool mates. We closed the night at Mary's as we have so many times before. Workman's can make it a trifecta when and if they get their affairs in order. With some of the infamous "Luck of the Irish", maybe it will happen. Sláinte mhaith !! ** A note on parking. The oppressive hotel has dominance over the entire parking lot behind and around the pub. One can park on the street (very limited) or at the Memorial Park to the south. As an owner, I would be obtaining spots adjacent to the property in the back lot for my customers. Lack of parking (including ADA) can be a death knell to a business. **Another note on the name of the pub...Workman's is very close to the already established Worker's Pub. Google drops you at Worker's when you search for Workman's. For non-locals, this may be an issue.

Kind of like the feeling of coming home. The place was packed -- just a testament to their very good food and excellent drinks -- there was even a couple sitting outside and they had a fire going. Wish I had taken that photo. It was a really beautiful moment. The place was decorated and felt very holiday festive with small bright lights reflecting off the tin ceiling. Excited to have a couple of days on holiday here. Stopped in to pick up their latest version of fudge because Christian the Baker keeps evolving the art of fudge making...and you don't want to miss an iteration. Using the owner's grandfather's recipe as the base, he makes some of the best fudge in Oregon. Tonight I was told he decided to explore a Mediterranean approach and added nutty sesame to the fudge. The sharp but soft chocolate is a perfect compliment to a delicious drink on a cold, cold night. While I was waiting for the fudge to be packaged to take back to the fireplace in my room, I spied their latest culinary endeavor sitting in jars on the counter... and actually started salivating. They are now serving Pickled eggs. Incredible. When was the last time you had a pickled egg? When done right, pickled eggs are among the most satisfying and clean bite of delicious ungrilled, ungreasy proteins in the world. And the lounge has decided to serve two different kinds, so we might've died and gone to heaven. If you love eggs of every kind, as I do, boiled eggs hold a special place because they are hearty and compact and completely whole. So when you add a spices and acid to that perfection...it emerges as "wow." The service was attentive and thoughtful always, and I was told they're open New Year's Eve until 9.
