This is a review that will undoubtedly improve in time. I hate to be giving a low score, but it is…read morebased on our experience. Note-- the reviewer (me!!) was born and raised in Ireland and has left a few particles of his liver in various pubs around the globe. And now onto the show...
The wife and I just came off of an incredible pub experience at Nana's in Newport, OR. Great band (St. James Gate), great craic, great food, stiff drinks, grand company, etc. We were anxiously watching and waiting for this spot to open up. Arrived to be greeted by a sign that stated their grand opening, was just a soft opening predicated upon the fact that their liquor license had yet to be issued. I get it. Things happen like that. Being faced with a negative, an owner should throw all they have into drawing folks in despite the lack of stiff drink. (I actually own a pub, and know a wee bit about the "game". 4 green balloons, does not constitute that effort. Also, when we called earlier inquiring about a happy hour, we were told, "we no longer have that." and no other info was offered. End of phone call. You just opened..how can you no longer have that???
Chalking this up to yet another coastal disaster that will be vacant in 6 months, some mates of ours popped out and asked us to join them. Came in to a beautifully decorated establishment, with spot on acoustics. The lad singing and playing guitar in the front of the house (not very well...not totally bad, but not totally good either) could be heard clearly at the back of the house. During our spell there, not one Irish / Celtic song was heard. If I heard one more poorly executed and out of key Neil Young song I was going to vomit. Damn lad...expand your catalogue.
Polite / friendly / attentive service from the owner and a a couple of other sexy Irish lasses in short kilts. One was making a critical error in telling customers that it was "okay to leave" when they heard that there was no alcoholic drinks being served. Entice them with the food...the music sure wasn't going to do it. I can promise you that the Triangle Tavern next door and Mary Todd's across the street had a bump in profits from the opening of the pub last night. Quite a few folks at both establishments commented that they came and went.
The food prices were fair. My wife who is the brie cheese connoisseur, was disappointed in her order. The brie had some sort of jam added to it prior to baking it that really took away from the flavour of the cheese itself. The grapes were sour, the apples were fine and the two types of crackers were perfect. I had the "Irish stew". The Irish aka we, are not known for food that kicks you in the arse and makes you crave it. We were the inspiration for catsup no doubt. Oh, and corned beef and cabbage isn't traditionally Irish either. I am sorry to share that, but now that you know the truth about Santa, the Tooth Fae, and The Oestra Bunny, you can get a better results from your therapist. Oh, back to the stew...
It was a watery mess with very small bits of beef in it, and a blob of mash dumped in the middle with a piece of focaccia bread atop. The Irish are used to things boiled. We like our potatoes in chunks, as we do our meat. We like soda bread, not Italian bread with our "Irish" meal. The flavour was not bad, but it was very watery, messy and odd.
All was not lost. We discovered The Triangle Tavern next door, and met some really cool mates. We closed the night at Mary's as we have so many times before. Workman's can make it a trifecta when and if they get their affairs in order. With some of the infamous "Luck of the Irish", maybe it will happen.
Sláinte mhaith !!
** A note on parking. The oppressive hotel has dominance over the entire parking lot behind and around the pub. One can park on the street (very limited) or at the Memorial Park to the south. As an owner, I would be obtaining spots adjacent to the property in the back lot for my customers. Lack of parking (including ADA) can be a death knell to a business.
**Another note on the name of the pub...Workman's is very close to the already established Worker's Pub. Google drops you at Worker's when you search for Workman's. For non-locals, this may be an issue.
