Really cute spot for breakfast! It's on the smaller side, so not a ton of seating, and the decor is kitschy, but cute. The food is very good and the staff is friendly. There is bar seating as well. My husband got the Lumber Jack breakfast which was very good and I got the Spanish omelette which was also delicious. If I went back, I would definitely indulge in their specials, like the black garlic smash. Those looked incredible! I was definitely envious of my neighbor's choices. Where do I begin? Small informal shop, self-seating, friendly service, convenient on-street parking. Very large selection of breakfast foods, all of which are fresh-made on-site. Their specialty is the pancakes! A stack of three cakes (my favorite are the Whole Grain) fills a large plate and weighs a few pounds! The Whole Grain cakes are big and hearty and full of nutty flavor. Nuts, seeds, and grains are abundant in each bite. Their coffee is not Starbucks-strong, yet not just hot brown water. Great little neighborhood restaurant that serves fantastic breakfast and lunch. All their breads are freshly baked on site. I love the fact that even their soups are all homemade. My favorite breakfast is their homemade corned beef hash and eggs. Sooo incredibly good. Their hot sandwiches are all very tasty and have that special taste all of its own, unlike any sandwich you get at any diner or restaurant. They also have freshly made pies for dessert. The place isn't for me. If you are lucky, you will get your own table but most likely you will sit at a big wide table next to people you don't know. If I want to do that, I'll go eat at a cafeteria. The food is very average breakfast food. Had much better at Hapgood's in Mountain Lakes or Alexis Diner in Denville. Pancakes were average so were the omelettes. The place is incredible noisy which adds to the cafeteria experience. I can't get enough of Carver's! Small breakfast and lunch spot in the heart of denville serving up fresh omelettes, French toast, delicious pancakes and other quick fare. I went on a rainy day one Saturday afternoon with my teenage son. The place was packed. After waiting awhile, we were lead to the counter. Although someone else came to sit next to us and seemed to get good service, conversation and a smile. We were ignored for the most part. I think you have to be a regular to get attention. True 5 star place. This is the second time going here. It's a 1hr 15min drive for breakfast an well worth it if you ask me. I don't mind driving to get good food an service. Fairly small place inside maybe 12-15 tables & booths very comfortable. Was seated right away by a guy that's name was Kevin, had our coffee right out, I ordered 3 Giant homemade bread French toasts, side of well done home fries, a 1 giant custom chocolate chip an pecan pancake. Food came out within a couple minutes an they were almost fully packed. The order came out correct an everything piping hot. Carvers food is okay and the price is a bit high. There is nothing special about this place. They have homemade bread which we can say that store bought bread is just as good and even better then their homemade bread. Their bread is not special at all. We have been here four or five times with Jebp Garrabrant and tried both breakfast and lunch. The owner, an older woman is not friendly or courteous to your needs. She will ignore you at times if you ask for something like more coffee or extra napkins. The younger guy is okay but also tends to forget if you ask for something. I could recommend Missy's on Main in Rockaway which blows this place away for breakfast and lunch. Not even close. We will not return to Carvers. read more

I've been dying to try this place back when it was called "Doc's Kitchen." I've always lived within 10 min of the place. I was happy to find out it was still the same owner and food so I didn't miss my chance. I went with a group of four around 1pm on a Sunday. It was packed, but we did not have to wait for a seat. The young man who greeted us had a big ol smile on his face and was very friendly. He seated us right way. The waitress asked for our drink orders. Cool. After examining the menu for a few minutes we placed our breakfast order. I think I had a question about the syrup or something that wasn't on the menu and she was able to answer. You kinda get the vibe that a lot of the same people/locals go there because the staff would be chatty with other customers, but not overly friendly to us newbies. After maybe 5 min I look over and there is a board of specials and they all looked amazing. The others I was with noticed too and were kinda bummed the waitress didn't mention the specials. Our food came and everything was great. The service improved a little (maybe she was tired or something) and I will definitely be back to explore more of the menu. read more

My husband and I are locals and would love to become regulars. However, when we walked in they were busy. While that's a great sign, it's NOT okay to not greet your guest. A simple "we will be right with you", nod, wave, waiting pointer finger would have been nice. 3 workers looked at us and just kept doing their thing without recognizing us for 5 minutes. The food was 5-star; the service was friendly enough, but sluggish and a bit inattentive -- maybe they were tired because it was about 45 minutes before closing time. However, the resturaunts building is quite small and there is almost always a long wait to get in because everyone saves their delicious homemade food. I absolutely love this place! The only time I eat pancakes is at the Carver's restaurant. It has the most delicious multigrain pancakes where you could add nuts and/or blueberries and strawberries. We went here on a Sunday morning at around 9 o'clock. There were a few people gathered outside waiting for tables, but we were only a party of two, so we were seated in a few minutes. While it was nice not to have to wait, it was unfortunate that we were put a a communal table which was really a two seat table butted up against a four seat table right in the middle of the restaurant. I am familiar with this kind of set up in busy breakfast places like Raymond's in Montclair, but in this situation it just felt like poor use of space. The decor was pretty terrible and sloppy; the tables and chairs were mismatched but not in a cool Monica's-apartment kind of way, but in a we-found-this-on-the-side-of-the-road way. I don't know if it was because of the conjoined table situation, but after having been seated there, it felt like we were being overlooked by the waitstaff the entire time. The menu wasn't too extensive (and they also only allow one substitution on they omelets which I thought was unusual), so we decided what we wanted pretty quickly. Despite our menus being closed and placed on the edge of the table, it took them 20 minutes to take our order. The whole time, it was nearly impossible to catch anyone's eye for a refill of our beverages. I could understand this if they were extremely busy, but they were not that busy-- some of the workers were refilling ketchup bottles. The food came out and it was ok. It took them another 15 minutes after our food was packed up in boxes for them to give us the check, and then another 10 minutes for them to take the credit card and process the payment so we could leave (they never actually took it, by the way, we had to find someone to take our payment so we could get on with our day). At this point, it was about 10:15, and there was a swarm of people outside waiting for tables. I don't know if it's part of their business strategy, creating the appearance of demand when it is really just inefficiently run, but on this particular Sunday it felt like a waste of our time. Their specials are always delicious and creative and their staples are consistently and equally as good. I been coming here for years! I love the homie feel and the service is always wonderful! The chocolate chip pancakes are perfection! I came in falltime wnd they had pumpkin pancakes- I'm still waiting to go back to them from in fall to get them again!! They were soooo good !! I love bringing my family here and they are always so aware when your coffee is getting low- they always come up and fill it back up! Great service and great environment for breakfast. My friend recommended this place and raved about..so I've been there twice and I really can't see what's so special about it... When you first walk in, you have to wait for someone to acknowledge you exist...initial service was slow...it seems like there is 1 server for every 3 tables, and its a little place, so I cant see why its hard to get their attention.. when you get the food, its average to small servings and completely bland...tiny slices of toast, a few eggs...nothing special...and I think im paying 7 to 8 dollars a plate? I could make a better, heartier, tastier breakfast at my place! If you can get a table here, you'll really enjoy your breakfast. Carver's has remarkably good toast - random, but a nice surprise, good eggs and pancakes. I also think the staff is very warm and friendly. I wish i could give it 4.5 stars - the two areas it falls a little short in is portion size and venue size. It's a very small luncheonette and at times you can feel cramped/rushed. I wouldn't go here with a large group - really 4 people is the most you should attempt. read more
