I agree with the reviews I'm seeing here - it's a diner. So long story short, back when I first moved to the area we had a bunch of diners we tried on Route 10. From east to west there was: * Ritz: only the longtime residents went there out of habit * Golden Touch: the "Roach" for what you might find there, but our go-to as cheap teenagers * Whippany: tiny and food was decent * Brookside: the best atmosphere and food, our choice if we were willing to drive a bit Well, two of the above have changed hands - the RItz still has the name but isn't the same diner, and Golden Touch is now just East Hanover Diner. Brookside is gone for reasons unknown. Leaving Whippany Diner as the last place I've known since... I guess I can call it my childhood at this point, going on 30 years. And no, not much has changed. Stuck in the middle of a jughandle, you're still going to be tested trying to park without scratching your car or someone else's. Try their lot, or park across the jughandle ramp? And then cross that on foot? Huh. Once you make it inside, it feels as cramped as the parking lot. We were led to a table up against a mirror that's next to a door, so my right eye saw people coming and going while my left eye saw... me. Short story long: Ambiance is not doing any favors here. Service? We were attended to well, food came out on time. Only odd occurrence was my friend's water was refilled and mine wasn't, but ours were at the exact same level? I'll let that slide. Finally, the food. My friend's chicken fingers looked rather weak and burnt. My crock of French onion soup was fine; though rather light on onion, the cheese came through. The spinach and feta omelet was actually a winner - fluffy, full of chunks of feta. But the side of hash browns? I would more call them pressed frozen potato slices. The verdict: Took me way too many years to write this review. Some things never change. Small old school diner updated just enough to keep it current. Spotless. Amazing service! Truly the best service we have ever received from a diner. We were there on a Saturday afternoon at lunch and it was a full house. How ever hard I tried my coffee cup never made it to empty without being refilled. The food was excellent as well. I order the same breakfast every time I go to any diner. A spinach and feta omelette. Some diners call it Florentine. Some call it a Greek. The preparation was perfect. Firm, no burn spots, super fresh spinach and just the right amount of feta. The home fries were on point as well. My wife ordered the patty melt which she said was superb. Again, perfectly prepared. The fries were terrific as well. The Whippany Diner was in our regular rotation for many years and then we stopped going altogether. I have no idea why but we will certainly return again soon. We were seated promptly at a small booth. The menu had a decent selection of interesting meals. The waitress was mostly friendly. She seemed ticked off when we were ordering when I wanted to make specifications on my daughter's children's meal, but was friendly at beginning and end of our dining experience. I had the chicken fajita panini which was tasty and came with fries. My husband got a cheeseburger deluxe which was a pretty small portion compared to other diners we've been to. Stopped by on a weekday for a late lunch after work. It is pretty standard as far as diner food. I was seated immediately. I got my meal pretty quickly after giving my order. My server was really nice. After you're done, you're given your receipt and you pay at the counter by the entrance. There is plenty of parking. It's easy to get back on route 10 going east or west as well which is convenient. read more

Wish I could leave a review regarding the food. However, I never had the chance to order. I walked in on a Sunday evening...more than 2 hours before closing time. A server looks at me, approaches me, but never says anything to me. She reached for a menu as I stood two feet away from her. At this point, another server at a table by the hostess area and her got involved in a discussion on where to sit a party of one (I was the only person waiting to be seated, there were only three other tables that had customers. One table had two people, two tables had one person....and then there was one person at the "bar".). One server had a party of one and a party of two and the other only had one table of one (As I picked up from their conversation). The server that approached me put the menu back, turned around and walked away (I am standing less than two feet from her the entire time). At this moment, another server comes out of the back and says to the person sitting at the bar "I am outta here". Just then, a woman walks through the front door, so there are now two of us waiting to be seated. The third server who was leaving then asks the woman that entered after me "how many" and the woman says "just me". She then seats the woman......which had to tell me to move so she could get by to follow the server to her table. I stood there for about 15 seconds...the server that originally began the conversation was one table away from me the entire time. I checked to make sure I had not somehow become a ghost by pinching myself....laser stared at the server closest to me and finally just said "that's ok, I don't need to be seated". That comment then prompted her to say "I will be with you in just a minute sweetie". WHAT? The other two servers could not have at least seated me? Moreover, would it have killed ANY of the three of you to have even greeted me or Acknowledged that I was standing there by myself for almost 4 minutes in an otherwise empty diner? So, instead I drove down the street to East Hanover Diner and ate there. I will leave East Hanover Diner a glowing review...5 Star. VERY good food, quick and very polite service and my server even shared a fun story with me about his niece from the past week. Way to go East Hanover Diner....I will be back! Mediocre diner with mediocre food. Server forgot my potatoes and toast. Potatoes were strange, like they made baked potatoes and squished them on a flat top. Toast was barely toasted when it finally arrived. Server wasn't rude, but not very attentive. Never got a refill on soda or even asked if I needed one. Came here twice during 4th of July weekend and ordered the Eggs Benedict two days in a row. The first day, the Benny's were cooked and on the second day those Benny's were oozing out once that fork cut through the middle. Changed our order from hash potatoes to French fries since were saw them on someone else's plate. My friend had the pancakes and they were fluffy. Next day, he had the egg white omelette and was please with his meal. Wait staff was friendly and accommodating with menu changes. Owner of restaurant engaged in conversation as she walked by. As you walk into the Whippany Diner it's a very homey feel. Locals dine here. On the way in, I asked if they have breakfast specials. The answer was, "yes." The check for eggs, meat & coffee came to $14.95 on a weekday morning. I told owner, "Jimmy," that a diner up the street in Livingston does the same for $7.95 including meat. "I don't believe it." "No, it's true," I advised. Jimmy, the "Master of Customer Service," told me in a nasty voice that it's impossible and he doesn't believe me. Say what? The breakfast was fine and the server very nice. She received a 25% gratuity, but old Jimmy won't see me again for sure. To offer full disclosure, I advised James to take a customer service course. My copilot and I were in the area for some training and decided to stop here on a whim one night. We are so happy that we did! What we found was an absolute gem of a diner! The menu is vast, breakfast served all day, good prices, and really amazing staff (Julia is astonishing!) We ended up eating at least one meal here, with few exceptions, every day while we were in town (2 1/2 weeks!) We trained almost everything on the menu at least once and can say that the Chicken Marsala, pancakes, and pot roast were my favorite. The food was ok, and we were promptly seated upon arrival. Our initial service was quick, and the food arrived in a reasonable time frame. However, as the restaurant became busier, I noticed that the owner, who initially welcomed us warmly, kept looking over at our table repeatedly. Towards the end of our meal, we wanted to order some more coffee, but it seemed to slip the hostess's mind. When we requested a warm-up, another waiter came cleared our plates prematurely, asking for coffee was a communication issue and when we asked for coffee the waiter look at us confused. The rushed service made us feel uncomfortable, even though our dining time was relatively short, around 35-40 minutes and that includes waiting for food. While the food and initial service were good, the constant attention from the owner and the rush to clear our table left a less-than-ideal impression. It's unfortunate because we would have liked to enjoy our coffee and stay a bit longer. This experience may make us hesitate to return when we come back to this area for a visit. read more

Tasty food, great service, and another in a long line of great diners I've been to on the road. Came here with a larger group for dinner, and we were accommodated quite quickly. Our server was very quick, had great recommendations, and made sure our drinks were filled and everyone was satisfied! I opted for a tuna melt, classic diner fair, and it was exactly what I wanted with that delicious potato salad. The pickles and slaw on the side also were quite good. My companion got the chili, which he said was quite good and had a lot of chips with it! Been here many times over the years and it just isn't what it used to be. I know I'm tough on diners, but we just didn't have a good experience with our last visit. We went on a Saturday, at lunchtime. We were seated right away, but then sat at our table waiting for a server for almost ten minutes. Finally had someone come over for our drink order (just some iced teas) and then we took more time to review the menu. We finally got our order in a few minutes later - I ordered a cup of chicken orzo soup and the Santa Fe Panini with well done fries and Wifey ordered a Turkey burger deluxe also with Fries well done. Food was just ok. Fries were NOT well done/crispy, my chicken panini was pretty bland and the very small piece of chicken only covered 2/3 of the bread. Wifey's burger was fine Service was ridiculously slow today. Table next to us had one order arrive then another five minutes later. The guy sat there complaining that his food was cold and the women, who ordered gluten free toast, had to wait even longer for that to arrive. Went for breakfast this morning and ended up finding an infestation of ants beneath our table. Granted a few ants here and there may happen, understandable; but when there are hundreds crawling around, maybe, at the very least, don't sit anyone at that table or close to address the issue. When we discovered the ants marching after finishing up eating, we told the waitress who said she would let someone know. On our way out the hostess (maybe manager?) about the situation who was extremely unapologetic. She then said that she was aware and an exterminator would be coming tomorrow. Chicken marsala sauce tastes like flour and loaded with sugar... Every time you order a chicken picata, marsala or chicken parmesan, they give you chicken fingers.... this is absolutely ridiculous... It is as if they have extra leftover fingers and they are using them. read more

We tried the Whippany Diner twice. The first time was just average diner food. It was nothing spectacular, but we figured we would give them another try. Tonight we decided that we will not be going back. My husband and I ordered the appetizer sampler and it was disappointing. The Buffalo chicken wings were not cooked thoroughly and were inedible. When this was mentioned to the waitress, she said she will let the kitchen know that "The wings need to be cooked all the way". "They should know that!" place was empty. I'm 6'2" and broad shouldered. i went in for a late lunch and got seated at a single booth. it was very cramped for me. I asked if i could grab the bigger booth by the window. they said, i have to ask. about three people had to run this small request up the flagpole before the powers that be granted me permission to sit at a bigger booth.keep in mind it was EMPTY at 2:30 pm on a tuesday. lunch rush is over dinner rush is over an hour from now. you are a DINER, an empty one at that and not the four seasons, FYI.really? i can't just take one if your many open booths without it being a hassle? Walked in with a party of 9, we were immediately greeted by a very rude and unprofessional hostess. She asked where the rest of our party was (reasonable question) we told her that they were parking. Then she doubted us and asked, are they parking here? We said yes, with a smile. While we waited, she seemed very bothered by our presence, we did have 5 kids with the us, but the place wasn't crowded and surprisingly the kids were well behaved. The waitress was much more welcoming and nice to us, especially the kids. The food was decent, typical diner food, nothing out of the ordinary. The guy at the counter was a piece of work. Didn't greet us when we walked in nor when we went to pay, didn't acknowledge us on the way out, just seemed bothered to be there, no "hey thanks for coming, have a nice day" or "how was everything", just a disinterested look. No small talk, just pay and get out. You would think that the food was free or something. Not asking for a red carpet or anything, just basic manners and civility.
