During a very special trip to Durango CO, we had the opportunity to eat dinner at just one place. We chose Carver's and were happy that we did. If you happen to be staying at the Best Western Rio Grande, I recommend that you do exactly what we did. Pre-destine yourself to eat at Carver's Brewing Co., walk down Main and keep an open mind about eating other places. If nothing else appeals to you (and maybe something will), then by the time you get to Carver's this is where you should eat.
We knew going in, because we had talked to a few people ahead of the trip and on our walk through various local shops, that we wanted to be seated outside. This was the litmus test. The hostess (although they were male, so is that a host?) greeted us warmly. This is important at a place, because it can be pretty nerve-wrecking to decide whether you are settling on a restaurant when you are on foot and there are SO MANY other choices for where to eat. But they were so polite and assured us that they had a spot for us, that it bestowed confidence in our decision to commit. And yes, they had a spot outside.
They walked us back through an impressive amount of square-footage of tables and party rooms, to an outdoor patio environment. If you are like my Mom or my Wife, I know what you are thinking--"oh sitting outside, I hope it wasn't too cold. I would have brought a jacket. I hope no one was smoking. The servers always forget people who are seated outside." etc. Let me put all those worries to bed. No one was smoking; the server came to our table very often and at short intervals; there was a canvas roof, preventing rain and wind and general cold. So relax, it's a great spot for outside seating. It was even a little chili and windy that night, but we didn't feel it on this patio.
Here's what really drove this place home for me. As we were being led towards the balcony, it was clear that a band of some kind was playing. I thought, "oh great, live music." That's always a nice added touch (provided you can still talk over it) at any restaurant establishment. Oh, but it was so much more than just a local sensation on the patio of Carver's on a Wednesday. This was apparently a Blue Grass Jam Band, if I have that right. I saw no less than ten people in a circle with various string instruments, and then some, playing long drawn out tunes. Some of them were familiar songs, such as Jonny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and some were completely new to me, but the group seemed to be right there playing in one big harmony. This is about as classic as it gets. As guests, it made us feel that we were witnessing the equivalent of a barber shop quartet. I love every moment of it, as did my wife.
While that was clearly the highlight, the food left nothing to be desired. I ordered the Buffalo Green Chili burger (not sure if I have the name right) and it was--no exaggeration--one of the top ten best burgers I've ever had. If you are a burger lover, I would highly recommend this one. In two words--Juicy and Flavorful.
I can see that there are a number of disappointed customers that have visited this place. I wouldn't put it past a large establishment to disappoint people every once in a while. This is especially true of bigger, more well-established restaurants. That just increases the chances of a bad experience for someone out there. But I want to defend this place and tell you that we had a great experience and would definitely return to try it again! read more
