I used to work in a Jewish deli so I dream of Matzo Ball Soup because it's really hard to find. I also dream of corned beef. When I do get corned beef, it's usually not that great. This place nailed it! Their corned beef is so delicious. It has no fat but you can taste the fat in it and I mean that in the best way. They even have bagel chips but by the time we got there, they were sold out. But their Matzo Ball Soup brings back memories. It was really good. It looked like they are remodeling and they need it. It's not the best aesthetically pleasing place. And they only take cash which sucks. I went back yesterday and forgot that and so I had to leave. Outstanding Ruben sandwich - really one of the best we have had - anyplace - Including the famous Carnegie Deli in NYC Times Square (Now Closed) Chili was really quite good - different than I was used to - but quite good. We got there just before 11AM - and were given a lunch menu - had originally thought of having breakfast, but decided to go with the Ruben sandwich & Chili for lunch. Now will have to go back (a bit earlier) to try breakfast. Bit of a drive for us - I should have picked up some stuff at the Deli counter to bring home. I'm giving this place 2 stars, one due to location and the other due to menu selections. My husband and I wanted some good Jewish deli food and this place came highly recommended. I ordered the pastrami and my husband ordered a chili cheese dog...not so Jewish, but he was hungry and craving it. I did find the menu limited, I for sure can say, it is not a Jewish deli. Don't be fooled by the out-of-date appearance of this place...you may feel like you're stepping back in time, but it's all for the good. Just remember, no one can stay in business for 90+ years on gross food. I got the Rueben on rye which was delicious! All entrees come with their homemade pickles which are tart and crisp and, in my mind, a perfect representation of a New York style pickle. The meat is all made in-home and has excellent flavor. The potato salad wasn't the best...I don't like mine sweet, but that's insignificant. This was the first time I've been there in a year.The corned beef was almost shaved and apparently kept in a steam table. When I saw the steamer it was kept open..so the CB was dry and warm. It's a restaurant that sells deli sandwiches AND just deli meat by the pound. Honestly, their meat is GREAT. And their service is EVEN GREATER! Husband and I heard great things about this place so we decided to give it a try. When we told them it was our first time (and that we will be taking our orders to-go), the lady behind the deli counter suggested some sandwiches (letting us know of her favorite), AND she gave us some meat to try! We got two special sandwiches to go - the ruthie & the Rebecca. Since the meats are good, the sandwiches are good. BUT theyre just TOO MEATY (which then makes it too salty. I see why men would like it, but it was a bit overwhelming for me. Ruthie - comes with roast beef or corn beef, turkey, and cole slaw. I ordered it with the roast beef. I chose this one because of the Cole slaw. I knew I couldn't eat a whole sandwich without having any greens in it. However, it was still too meaty. Rebecca - pastrami, turkey, and cream cheese. My husband got this one. It was recommended to us by our friend AND the worker. He loved it, but I wasn't a fan of the cream cheese part. Again, it was too much! Meat itself is so hearty and the cream cheese only adds onto it. The deli meat is so good that I definitely would like to enjoy this place more. When I moved my Grandparents to Fort Worth 5 years ago, my Grandpa would often say that he would like a real Jewish pastrami sandwich. This is before my active Yelping days. I remember passing Carshon's, but it was always too late in the day to get it since they close at 3. He and my Grandma would reminisce when they used to go to legit Jewish Deli's in Miami. They say I've been, but I don't remember. So every time Grandpa would say he wanted a real pastrami sandwich, I would go get him a pastrami sandwich from Jason's Deli or Schlotzskys, some deli in Grapevine, or even Arby's. *Hangs head*. Of course, he would say it's not bad, but this isn't a real Jewish pastrami sandwich. I'm like wth is a real pastrami sandwich then?? Grandpa passed away 2 years ago and a real pastrami sandwich hasn't been mentioned since. Until recently, Grandma reminded me that she wanted to try Carshon's. It's hard for her and I to go out for a nice, quiet, non rushed lunch without kids, so we waited for the husband to be off so I could take her without kids. I now know what Gramps meant about a real pastrami sandwich. Every other pastrami sandwich I ever had does not compare to this pastrami sandwich! I now know why Gramps always made his sandwiches 10 feet tall too. I felt incredibly horrible for going to Arby's and getting a pastrami sandwich when he wanted a REAL pastrami sandwich. I've been hearing about this Matzo Ball soup and Pastrami sandwich for years, so that's what I got. Along with macaroni salad and a pickle. Grandma got the Matzo Ball soup, but half a chopped liver sandwich and half corned beef. The soup was good, it reminded me of chicken noodle soup with this dumpling like ball in the middle. Grandma said it was good, but not quite how she remembered. The pastrami sandwich was huge and delicious. I could only eat half. The pickle was probably the best pickle I have ever ate. OMG, I'm starting to realize that TX has this food thing figured out like no other! My husband loves chocolate pie and on Louis G.'s excellent information (thanks Mister) I went here today for lunch. I called a taxi from the hotel (which turned out to be a town car when it arrived) and I thought am I crazy doing this for a sandwich and pie, I mean how good can this really be?? I had no idea how small of a price it was for the best Reuben and slice of Chocolate Pie I have ever had! This rueben is beyond description. I have been to Katz in NYC a couple of times and I thought their pastrami was the best, but I was wrong- so so wrong. This sandwich has the perfect ingredients, ratio, and temperature. The meat is flavorful, tender and moist. The bread is special, I can't put my finger on it, but this combination is amazing. My husband liked roast beef on white bread. He thought the meat was excellent but regretted his bread choice. Then he tried the pastrami and it was over lunch fans! I was forced to share the rest for marital harmony. He was blown over and said he would never crave Katz's again. And then it was pie time. Pie and I go way back, my Mom made them for the fair and sold them to local restaurants in Colorado. Sorry Mom, but this pie is kicks your pie's meringue. The crust is no regular crust. It is like pastry, but then again not. The warm filling delights the taste buds, the flavor intense......... This is a true religious experience. I ask the spouse: "Is this is what heaven is like?" "We should be so lucky...." he replied. You have to go here, it is a treasure. This was my first visit to Carshon's Deli located in the south side of Ft. Worth. It's a small building that would be easy to over look passing by which makes it even more of a local gem. The inside is actually much larger than I expected from the outside. When you enter the front door you are face to face with the deli counter and all the meats and cheese that are used to build your meal. To the side is the dinning room which has adequate seating for a few large groups and the usual suspects you'd find in a local lunch spot like this. We sat down and was greeted by a waitress and presented the menu. I knew what I was here for before I left the house but I still took a few minutes to look over the menu. I was surprised at the diversity in the sandwich menu, not many places offer tongue and chopped liver sandwiches. I placed my order - the Ruben sandwich with a side of macaroni salad. My wife ordered a half of a chicken salad sandwich and a cup of the soup of the day - potato. Out first was the potato soup. A nice creamy cup of warm goodness. I was only allowed a spoonful but it alone would be worth another visit. Next up were the sandwiches. My wife's chicken salad looked good. Shredded chicken with mayo, hard boiled eggs, green onion and pickle relish made up the salad which she ordered on egg bread. I had the Ruben, my check point for any restaurant that calls themselves a deli. I was pleasantly surprised. The Ruben was served on grilled rye bread (pumpernickel was available but I went traditional). The corned beef had a great subtle taste, juicy and warm throughout. The sauerkraut had just enough kick to keep the sandwich going and thankfully wasn't so messy as to make the bread soggy. The Swiss cheese held it all together with that aged dry taste you only find in a good quality block of cheese. Overall, this is a great place for a nice quiet lunch of good quality sandwiches. There were several plate lunches available including knock wurst and kraut so I'll definitely be back to try the other fare Carshon's has to offer. A word of warning - the business does NOT accept credit/debit cards so bring cash with you. Also, this is a lunch spot so don't expect to grab a late night snack as they close at 3pm. read more
