OMG, I'm starting to realize that TX has this food thing figured out like no other! My husband loves chocolate pie and on Louis G.'s excellent information (thanks Mister) I went here today for lunch. I called a taxi from the hotel (which turned out to be a town car when it arrived) and I thought am I crazy doing this for a sandwich and pie, I mean how good can this really be?? I had no idea how small of a price it was for the best Reuben and slice of Chocolate Pie I have ever had! This rueben is beyond description. I have been to Katz in NYC a couple of times and I thought their pastrami was the best, but I was wrong- so so wrong. This sandwich has the perfect ingredients, ratio, and temperature. The meat is flavorful, tender and moist. The bread is special, I can't put my finger on it, but this combination is amazing. My husband liked roast beef on white bread. He thought the meat was excellent but regretted his bread choice. Then he tried the pastrami and it was over lunch fans! I was forced to share the rest for marital harmony. He was blown over and said he would never crave Katz's again. And then it was pie time. Pie and I go way back, my Mom made them for the fair and sold them to local restaurants in Colorado. Sorry Mom, but this pie is kicks your pie's meringue. The crust is no regular crust. It is like pastry, but then again not. The warm filling delights the taste buds, the flavor intense......... This is a true religious experience. I ask the spouse: "Is this is what heaven is like?" "We should be so lucky...." he replied. You have to go here, it is a treasure. This was my first visit to Carshon's Deli located in the south side of Ft. Worth. It's a small building that would be easy to over look passing by which makes it even more of a local gem. The inside is actually much larger than I expected from the outside. When you enter the front door you are face to face with the deli counter and all the meats and cheese that are used to build your meal. To the side is the dinning room which has adequate seating for a few large groups and the usual suspects you'd find in a local lunch spot like this. We sat down and was greeted by a waitress and presented the menu. I knew what I was here for before I left the house but I still took a few minutes to look over the menu. I was surprised at the diversity in the sandwich menu, not many places offer tongue and chopped liver sandwiches. I placed my order - the Ruben sandwich with a side of macaroni salad. My wife ordered a half of a chicken salad sandwich and a cup of the soup of the day - potato. Out first was the potato soup. A nice creamy cup of warm goodness. I was only allowed a spoonful but it alone would be worth another visit. Next up were the sandwiches. My wife's chicken salad looked good. Shredded chicken with mayo, hard boiled eggs, green onion and pickle relish made up the salad which she ordered on egg bread. I had the Ruben, my check point for any restaurant that calls themselves a deli. I was pleasantly surprised. The Ruben was served on grilled rye bread (pumpernickel was available but I went traditional). The corned beef had a great subtle taste, juicy and warm throughout. The sauerkraut had just enough kick to keep the sandwich going and thankfully wasn't so messy as to make the bread soggy. The Swiss cheese held it all together with that aged dry taste you only find in a good quality block of cheese. Overall, this is a great place for a nice quiet lunch of good quality sandwiches. There were several plate lunches available including knock wurst and kraut so I'll definitely be back to try the other fare Carshon's has to offer. A word of warning - the business does NOT accept credit/debit cards so bring cash with you. Also, this is a lunch spot so don't expect to grab a late night snack as they close at 3pm. read more

In all honesty this is possibly the best deli here in Fort Worth, It was established in 1928 by a Jewish Immigrant, and seems to be one of a kind. The Reuben was very delicious, I thought the chili was eh, but you are here for the sandwiches not chili. Soooo I am from the NE and I was extremely dissapointed by this place. I came here with my friend who is also from the NE and she agrees its a big let down. Yeah to start its cash only, which is annoying. The server was nice but slow and kept forgetting straws. The inside is OK but nothing special, not even all that great. I ordered the bowl of matzo ball soup which was decent but again nothing special. The broth was pretty good but the matzo balls were kind of tough. I also got half a salami sandwich on a bagel which was disgusting. They have two tops for the part of the bagel, the salami was gross and my friend who ate her pickle said it tasted rancid. Doesn't look like much but the corn beef and pastrami is the bomb. I am from Cleveland Ohio and raised on the best Slyman's and Vienna delis. Then lived in Detroit where the corn beef melts in your mouth. Been here 8 years and have found zero good corn beef. Until now. The sandwich with coke slaw and Russian dressing is good. Wow! This place is great! A friend of mine has been going here for years and she took me out to lunch here recently. This place has old school charm and mouth-watering food. I have been thinking about my next visit since I walked out the door. My friend ordered for us. We got two different sandwiches (Rebecca and Ruthie) and split them - both were amazing! Love this classic deli. My grandparents came here often. Sometimes it's tricky finding a parking place but it always opens up eventually. My stars are for the food. I've never been let down with taste and quality. The staff on the other hand can sometimes seem rude. And anytime I make a phone in order ahead of time the same lady can barely hear!! Stopped by today for lunch. I had a bowel of the matza ball soup and the wife had the vegetable spread combo plate. Both were delicious. The service was excellent and attentive. We stop by on occasion but this is my first review. We will continue to stop by on occasion as long as the quality of the food and service remains the same. Been going here for years!! Have never found another deli that even comes close!!! Have never had anything I didn't like. Although the Reuben is good I always recommend the Rebecca. It by far is the best sandwich!!! Don't forget to add bagel chips! Although all the desserts are to die for I always go for the lemon bar! They are my favorite and carshons are ridiculously good!!! I love Reuben sandwiches and this was the best one I've ever had. Hands down. Also it was HUGE - you don't need a side dish with it. The chocolate pie was also the best pie I've ever had...possibly ever. It's now my gold standard dessert. I can see why Carshon's has been a Fort Worth staple for so many decades. I've passed by this place probably a million times and not thought anything of it. I mean, it really doesn't look like much. But then I saw that it made FW Magazine's "Best of 2018" list, so I had to try it out. Man, that was a good choice. Turns out, this place is the oldest restaurant in FW. There's a reason it's been around for so long, too; it's really good! I got just a sandwich, the Rebecca, per recommendation by my waitress. It certainly isn't a "healthy" sandwich with lean turkey, wheat bread, and lots of veggies, but I had no regrets splurging on this. I really wanted to like Carshon's since it came recommended by a bona fide foodie friend. The place is really run down and not maintained. Our booth was literally falling apart with the fabric ripped and the dark yellow foam padding sticking out, the paint on the wall was bubbling and peeling, there was a piece of SALTINE CRACKER inside our sugar caddy. If I hadn't had a firm recommendation, I would have walked out after seeing the state of this place. Dirty, old, poorly maintained...what the heck does the kitchen look like? We visited Carshon's with our autistic son who is very choosy about his food. So, before we ordered, we asked the waitress if there was american cheese for the grilled cheese sandwich. She assured us, yes. We then proceeded to order drinks and sandwiches. Mine was very good and the pickle on the side was delicious. My son's sandwich was "not OK" according to him. When we checked out, the cashier told us that it was cheddar cheese, not American. I explained that I had asked, specifically, about the cheese options before we ordered. She said, with much disdain, "Well, we don't have fake things here". O. M. G. You know what? Serve what you want at your restaurant, but DON'T disparage the tastes of your customers! I don't want to be mean because I'm sure there are probably some really great things at this place, but today I ordered for the first time through a delivery service and I ordered a half turkey sandwich and chicken noodle soup. Theres no pictures or description so I figured a turkey sandwich is just lettuce, maybe some tomato and mayo and whatever else. No, it was literally just smoked turkey in between bread. So spread... no lettuce.. just turkey. Very odd aftertaste as well to the smoked turkey. I also got chicken noodle soup, it is mostly broth and at the bottom a bunch of string noodles like Campbells, just little specs of chicken. Doesn't seem homemade to me, its like a can. If it were homemade I would expect to have chicken in my chicken noodle soup. Anyway, I will not be eating my lunch I ordered because I broke my foot and can't get out. Very disappointing. read more

I had a cup of their split pea soup and half a sandwich of the corned beef. Sandwich didn't really impress me much but their soup was great. Corned beef sandwich didn't have any flavor. I thought I'd already reviewed Carshon's but I must have forgotten. Bad Anye. I went here right after opening time on a Saturday morning a few months back and so I went to the menu just now to refresh my memory on what I'd ordered. I was pretty sure I'd ordered the Rebecca, however looking at their picture, the sandwich I remember was nothing like the picture. The sandwich I got wasn't grilled and it wasn't overstuffed. In fact, I don't even remember it having 3 pieces of bread as advertised. So maybe the Saturday morning crew is clueless? The egg bread was good but the pastrami really thinly sliced and bland like lunch meat rather than home-cooked pastrami like you'd get at Langer's in LA or Kenny & Ziggy's in Houston. I was comfortably sated after eating the entire sandwich and the bland macaroni salad, but didn't think either was great. I did buy a loaf of challah to take home and enjoyed that more than the sandwich. So I'm not sure if they were having an off day or what but I wasn't that impressed. Maybe I will give them another try on a weekday lunch. By the way - several other reviewers have called Carshon's "Kosher". Carshon's is not Kosher. It is *kosher style*, which is significantly different from "Kosher" to observant Jews. A true Kosher deli will not serve any dairy products whatsoever, no pork or shellfish, and fish won't be mixed with the meat directly though it can be served on a separate plate. A Kosher deli will have its rabbinic certification prominently displayed, and everything served inside will likewise have been either prepared onsite or will have been independently rabbinically certified. It is also unlikely that a Kosher deli would be open on Shabbat, which is Friday sundown through Saturday sundown. There are probably a few other things I missed but that's the overall gist. A "kosher style" deli simply means they probably don't serve pork or shellfish but they do not actually follow Jewish dietary laws as described above. They are probably open on Shabbat as well. (Carshon's closes for the Christian weekend, not the Jewish weekend). To save you some embarrassment - If you have observant Jewish friends coming to visit and you're looking for a safe place to tell them to eat, Carshon's would not be on their list. As far as I know the only true Kosher establishments in the DFW area are in the North Dallas area where there is a significant Orthodox community, however I have not frequented any of these establishments so I cannot recommend. Occasionally there are bagel chains and coffee chains that are certified Kosher for dairy meals but I can't remember which ones (these might be open on Shabbat, but your Orthodox friends wouldn't go to a restaurant on Shabbat anyway so it's not really relevant). They have a very specific way of doing business at Carshon's, and I have to note that I really do love the idea of any business bearing a true internal compass: that is, tell us who you are from the get-go, be clear, be enthusiastic when it comes to educating newcomers, and keep on doing what you do well. If you've never been to Carshon's, they're not exactly hiding the fact that they still do things the way that they're comfortable doing them: case in point, they take checks. That is not a typo. I didn't pay with a check, of course, seeing as I've not carried a checkbook since the 1990s (and maybe not even then), but they will have none of the demon credit or debit card here, and it's cash or check only. That, my friends, is fascinating. At any rate, there's lots to love outside of quirky payment conventions: a few things I noticed included the fact that they'll serve you up a Paulaner for two and a half bucks at lunch, that the sandwiches are hearty (they recommend the egg bread, and I don't actually think our waitress was listening when I asked for a half sandwich, as she brought me a whole one), and the place is chock full of regulars. My guess is that it doesn't take long to get the gist of the drill around here, and if you're unsure they'll tell you. My lunch was filling (I chose a roast chicken on wheat) and a XXX root beer to pair it with. And I definitely walked full. I'll look forward to trying to get back one day soon, when I can take my time, and when I've been through the protocol at least once. read more

In a sandwich world run by the likes of mcalister's and subway and jimmy john's, Carshon's is a throw-back to those "good ol' days," where, If you're looking for something more deli-style and less chain-ish, this is the place to go. Heck, it's so "good ol' days," it only takes cash or check for payment. haha. but seriously, no joke. Carshon's seems like it hasn't changed in years, and that's part of its charm; you walk in, sit yourself down, order your sandwiches and sides (sides come separately by the way), and get served a good lunch. My friend ordered one of their specialty sandwiches, the Rebecca. Pastrami, cream cheese (yes), turkey, russian dressing. She said she orders it every time she comes and it always scores. I ordered another specialty sandwich, the Rachel. Corned beef, turkey, coleslaw (yes), russian dressing. on rye bread. Another winner. The coleslaw really makes it memorable and distinctive. Carshon's also has a few other specialty sandwiches, but if you want just "normal" sandwiches, they have those too--from roast beef to tuna to chopped liver. Fort Worth is beef crazy, yet not a lot of places seem to explore the idea of pickling cattle for sliced beef. Why not take 10% of the cows we eat and produce some pastrami, good roast beef, or even... CORNED BEEF? Indeed, Fort Worth has had a New York style deli in its grasp for quite sometime, and I, a big foodie, have not eaten there yet! Everyone in Cowtown is probably blown away that you can find some pretty decent deli meats outside of New York; that is coincidentally the reason I came here as well. This long-time favorite is located in the Northwest area, close to TCU. It is no-frills with a grimey, dark atmosphere and solid deli grub. The Reuben is one of the best I have had. The corned beef was great, the sauerkraut was tangy, the Swiss was melty, and the grilled rye bread was crisp. Oh, and it was dripping "fat water," that good stuff that drips off of freshly sliced corned beef. Nice. The turkey and pastrami combination I picked was great also. The pastrami was smoky, peppery, and had fat pieces. The turkey was moist, and thinly sliced. The pumpernickel was very soft, and it held up nicely to the mounds of meat. The disappointments should not really be taken into account, but they must be at a Jew-food deli. The matzo ball soup was fairly boring, and the chili was one-sided. The least appealing thing was that both were lukewarm. All in all, this place definitely deserves some praise for offering the best Reuben in town and staying afloat in such a beat down part of town. I mean I love to order a pound of roast turkey and hot pepper cheese with a half loaf of rye bread and eat Carshon's all week long. Their delimeats are fabulous!!
