Went in here for lunch w friends last week. We had a dog so we ordered take out....We had never been but I have had some of their orzo salad before and it was great, so we decided to try it since we were at the Restore. Walked up to the counter and asked the lady if they made sandwiches to go. I kid you not when I say this... she looked straight at us, said "Pffft .... um yeah" with a HUGE attitude. My friend and i just looked at each other like OMG...I was blown away . I asked for a menu and she told me to take the one that was taped down to the hostess stand. So we awkwardly read it on the stand instead of ripping it off the stand...it was the rudest interaction I have ever had in any restaurant ever. We should have walked out but we were starving and we were sending our friends back to Nc. And we wanted to feed them first. We will never go back. The food was great but the older woman behind the counter was extremely rude to us and I do not recommend this place at all. How is this place still in business treating their customers like this. We stopped here to get some dessert. The parking lot was packed, and there were folks waiting outside to be seated. Since we wanted baked goods to go, we walked in & over to the bakery case. They had 3 or 4 cupcakes which looked pretty good, they had lemon bars and brownies and a few other items including whole layer cakes. They also had a few different sampler packs - a really great idea! Nothing really caught our fancy so we left without making a purchase. I from time to time order carry out omelettes from Carrot Tree. The menu didn't change for quite a while and then did change. The new additions to the winter menu are lovely and delicious. My family and I were looking for an alternative to IHOP and found the Yelp reviews for this restaurant. When we arrived for breakfast we were greeted and seated immediately. The decor is really warm and pleasant. Our server was really affable and patient as we asked several questions about menu items. The portion size for the kid menu is huge. We left with a to-go container. The pancakes were fluffy and the bacon crisp. The seasonal fruit was fresh as well. I ordered the spinach and mushroom frittata. Unfortunately, this dish was not very good. The mushrooms were too slimy and quite frankly too plentiful in the dish. The frittata lacked seasoning as well. Carrot Tree is not in the business to show any kind of compassion or customer service. The owner flat refused to seat us because we needed to bring a small lunch bag of safe food for our 6 year old son who has multiple life threatening food allergies. My son left in tears because this man wouldn't allow him to eat safely in the restaurant with our family. Here's how it happened... My family arrived a few minutes after my parents, who had already been seated. They mentioned we would have a lunch bag for our son who has allergies. He told them, very straight faced, we could not bring in food. We walked in as he was returning to the front and we said hi, meeting my parents, they are already seated, etc. He then said he was aware and that we were not allowed to enter the restaurant due to health regulations. (....No. Not a real thing.) thinking he must be assuming I have an uber picky child or something of the sort, I told him Mason has severe life threatening allergies, it's just his lunch, we will all order meals. He then again denied us entry saying we couldn't feed him here and asked what I was bringing in. I opened Mason's Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles lunch bag and showed him the soy yogurt, applesauce, peaches, and allergy safe ham(we were going to order apple juice for him). He again said no. I was already upset by this point, obviously, and all I could think and say was Shame on you! And we left. I can understand if we had a McDonalds bag, a Cheese Shop bag or an item from another restaurant. This was prepackaged safe food for my 6 year old. I'm still angry Carrot Tree Kitchens. Great quality of food, definitely overpriced, but HORRIBLE SERVICE!! Appalling. My grandma is 86 years old who can't walk without heavily relying on a walker/rollator. We approached the hostess podium, there were plenty of empty tables; all the wait staff (they're definitely not short staffed) either looked at me and looked away or simply didn't acknowledge me. My grandma needed to sit - high priority- so after 12m I said let's seat ourselves at one of the empty tables. After I got her situated and sat down, an older woman comes RUNNING over and asked who sat us I said my grandma is elderly and needed to sit so I sat us. She said well you need to move to a two top I'm seating this table. I said well there's so many other empty tables, she said I have a list and you need to move to a two top. I was dumbfounded. I gathered my grandma and shuffled her to the opposite end of the restaurant where it was challenging to squeeze her in the tiny space. Following that, we were ignored a whopping 15m I kid you not. The waitress was "fine" but curt to say the least. The food portions were much smaller than you'd assume with the price. It was $35 including 20% tip for lunch for 2, no appetizers or desserts. Seems awfully high. The experience sucked due to awful customer service. I'll absolutely never go back. I remember the original carrot tree off of Jamestown rd and how lovely the experience was 100% of the time. My, have they gone downhill. Carrot Tree Kitchens is NOT a kid or allergy friendly restaurant. We bought our kids to see their "Pops" sing during church. After church we decided to try this restaurant, which ended up being a big mistake. Our 6 year old son has several life threatening food allergies (dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, etc), so we usually bring him food from home (soy yogurt, organic ham, and applesauce). The owner told us that we were not allowed to bring in ANY food and that it was against health regulations to allow any outside food into his restaurant. We showed him what we had and he continued to say no and never once acknowledged our son. This means no infants/toddlers with Gerber products, goldfish crackers, apple sauce, or other snacks would be welcome. The owner didn't even say sorry when our son left the restaurant crying from embarrassment. This is the FIRST time we have ever been told we can't bring safe food to a restaurant for our 6 year old son. I am very disappointed in this poorly owned/run business and hope they reconsider the needs of the growing population of food allergic people. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

I love this place. Everything is made from scratch and tastes like it is homemade. I am always in favor of eating at home so this place is a MUST GO TO again in my opinion. We were big fans, going about monthly with the family... enjoying even the old location. When the food is cooked correctly it is wonderful. I like the variety and the pastries are fabulous. Which is why I am giving 3 stars. The last few times there has been something I chose to ignore... sausage given instead of bacon, food taking longer then necessary to come out, a few other odds and ends.... just little things. This time I think we are done. After a 25 min wait (the restaurant wasn't busy at the time) They over cooked my eggs and brought my daughter the wrong meal. They did give me new eggs, but what bothered me was what happened with my daughters meal. The person bringing out the food immediately acknowledged it was wrong, but tried to convince my daughter why she should just take what she brought??!!!?? My daughter is sweet and was going to just take the meal until I said something! It was just a slice of quiche. That sat wrong with me. So we watched my son finish his food, my daughter got hers, then finally, mine came out. We all ate at different times. :( Made for not a great experience. It will be awhile before we go back again. Our food was cooked to order. I had Grandad's breakfast with cheese grits and over-medium eggs. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the grits were packed with cheese. The Old Dominion biscuits were tasty. Next time, I would get without the chutney dressing. My husband had the carrot cake pancakes. It was topped with fresh carrots. He loved it, me not so much. I've eaten here many times and enjoyed the food, service, variety of breakfast options, and relaxed atmosphere. However I am choosing to give carrot tree a one star because of my latest experience. If they fix this issue in the future I would be happy to revise my review. This morning I went to order a takeout breakfast. I settled on the Europa crepes which were clearly labeled $6.49 on the menu. When I ordered, they rang up at a higher price. When I questioned this, the waitress said that the basic crepes were $6.49 but that because the Europa crepes had more premium ingredients, they were more expensive. Fair enough, but it's dishonest of a restaurant to label an item as one price and then charge another. I'm sure this was an oversight and not intentional on their part, but she was unable to honor the menu price, and so I walked out. I'm the end I walked to Chickahominy house and paid $13 for a lunch special. Hopefully Carrot Tree will fix this issue in the future or at least honor listed menu prices. read more

I think Carrot Tree is a great example of Internet hype. It's pretty hard to miss, especially if you're heading to Jamestown. It definitely looks cool from the outside, as it was obviously a motel. The folks inside are very friendly. It's obviously very popular among tourists. But....there was nothing outstanding about it. I had the crab cakes and the stew. I was disappointed by the rather small portions. And of course the carrot cake. The crab cakes tasted fine. The stew was a little salty, but okay. The carrot cake was tasty but it just didn't taste any more memorable than any other carrot cake I've ever had. It could be that compared to other cakes, carrot cake has a more subued flavor. Either way, I think Carrot Tree Kitchen is a neat place to stop by, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to do so. Nor would I lose sleep if I somehow missed it. There are far better dining establishments in Williamsburg, and if you are vacationing (like I was), I would recommend you look elsewhere. I have a feeling that most of their business is tourists, especially the Internet-savvy ones. Definitely over-hyped. read more

The Carrot Tree is a favorite of my boyfriend's, who grew up in the area, so on one of our last days in Virginia, we headed here with some friends. The restaurant itself doesn't look like much at all; I'm pretty sure it's just a converted motel. Will and I both ordered The Quartermaster, which is a roast beef sandwich on wheat, with melted Swiss, fried onions, and blue cheese. It comes with a side of delicious potato salad. We really should have just shared a sandwich, because while delicious, it left us with very little room for dessert. But that's never stopped us before. We split a slice of carrot cake, which was so tasty, although I've had better frosting before. Still, I was super impressed with the Carrot Tree. This is a quaint little hidden gem. I would have never known about if it wasn't for my fellow Yelpers. We stopped in to try them out for lunch and were not disappointed. We were greeted with pleasant smiles and were seated right away. The dining area is not very large but it was a chilly day and they had the Woodstove burning and was nice and cozy. They have all there desserts displayed and are so tempting as you enter. The food was served fast and was very fresh. The service was excellent. The lunch specials come with a small dessert and they are just as good as they look. I have to say the carrot cake was probably one of the best I think I have ever had. I still agree with my previous review - the food is DELICIOUS - but having gone back in several times recently, my mother and I have both realized that the staff is really just not very friendly. We've both gotten the feeling that the staff just seems annoyed or put-upon by doing their jobs. And twice, my order has been slightly wrong. This is not enough to make me stop coming for take-out, but I generally don't want to come for a sit down lunch anymore. Anything from the Carrot Tree is a true treat, from their deliciously moist cakes to their ham biscuits to their awesome tomato basil soup. My brother and sister in law had their wedding cake from here (it's been years ago now) and it was amazing. I've had just about all of their cakes over the years and my favorites are the sour cream pound cake with raspberry filling and the almond. Ohhhh the almond! So delicious! The best part - when they don't have just a slice of almond cake, you can get a read more " two-bite "pretty four" - almond cake, some type of delicious almondy syrup, buttercream frosting, and an almond on top. I agree with reviewers to blast the "internet hype" of Carrot Tree. Sure, it is no five star restaurant. It is a glorified deli/bakery. However, as bakery/delis go, it is quite good. When you keep that point of reference in mind, you won't be disappointed. The tuna salad at Carrot Tree is some of the best I've ever had. During our last morning of our holiday, we stopped in Yorktown to walk through the Nelson House and to walk through the streets of this quaint waterfront village. We spotted Carrot Tree Kitchens on our way to our car. We stopped to take a look at the menu even though we didn't have time to stop in for lunch. We did, however, have enough time to have some dessert before rushing off to catch our flight. We ordered a slice of carrot cake and a slice of chocolate cake. The carrot cake was amazing moist and tender covered with a light, sweet cream cheese frosting. Even better, they make their carrot cake without raisins. The chocolate cake was dense and moist with a thick chocolate frosting. The cake itself was so rich that I had to scrape off most of the frosting for fear I might go into a sugar overload. You should be aware that the restaurant has limited days and hours which are posted outside. Reservations for dinner are recommended as they are open only a few evenings each week. Don't be put off by the weird carrot themed costumes that the staff wear. read more

Yum yum yum! We stopped by for lunch after visiting Jamestown. Getting out of the car, we could smell all sorts of wonderful things baking. Once inside, we were warmly greeted and seated quickly with cold drinks. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, the ham biscuits (more on these in a second) and a roast beef sandwich. The pulled pork was decent - it seemed out of place in this quaint little restaurant, but my son enjoyed every bite. My roast beef was very good - savory roast beef, sweet caramelized onions and a bleu cheese spread hiding inside. The absolute stunner of the meal were the biscuits with Virginia ham. They weren't southern style fluffy biscuits - instead they were little discs of buttery, flaky, crispy edged bits of heaven. They were topped with slices of sugar cured virginia ham and an onion chutney spread. Absolutely amazing. In fact, I ordered 4 to go! We also took home 2 enormous cookies and a piece of the most wonderful scratch made carrot cake. You'd have to bet a place named after Carrots would have epic carrot cake - and that's a winning bet. All in all, this was a great little spot and worth visiting after exploring the history triangle. read more

Perfect little lunch spot! We just finished seeing historic Jamestown and were wanting a light lunch before heading to Yorktown Battlefield. Since my fiancée is vegetarian, I figured a restaurant named The Carrot Tree was bound to have some vegetarian options, and we were not disappointed! The place is super quaint with great food and service. I wish I could remember the name of the girl that helped us but she was so friendly and made good recommendations. As we were leaving she was telling us the history of the restaurant and we had to take some carrot cake to go. I had the Turkey wrap and my fiancée had The Yorktown Onion. Oh goodness is this place adorable! After doing the Jamestown Settlement with my sister we saw this cute motel and I realized I had heard the name before on Yelp. Loved it! Not packed with tourists, a bit unorganized about getting seated and checked out during rush, but the service was sweet and the food was just so good. Like going to a friends house for lunch....with disposable plates and cups. Oh well. As long as I get a metal fork it's doable. I had the egg salad wrap with orzo veggie salad with feta and it came with a dessert so I brought home some carrot cake. They have food packaged to go and our vacation condo is not set up for more than reheating...so I snagged some lemon salmon, chicken Marsala, and some carrot muffins to go (loved that they weren't too sweet!) I always get the Old Dominion Ham Biscuits, Brunswick Stew, Strawberry Fields Salad with Apple Cider Balsamic dressing and finish with the Amazing chocolate cake. These items are always consistent and never disappoint me. I've always hated Carrot cake but I decided to try theirs and I actually loved it. The Carrot Tree has opened a new restaurant in Williamsburg on Jamestown Road. I have lived in Williamsburg for 35 years following this business. There new restaurant is delightful offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a lovely bakery with many choices to purchase. Outstanding Carrot Cake. This restaurant offers a variety of what I refer to as selections that have survived though the years. Everything is fresh. You will find it busy at lunch with many locals frequenting it. That is a good sign. I have not yet tried breakfast or dinner, but doubt that I will be disappointed. read more

With a restaurant that was mostly empty, the staff refused to put tables together for our party of 9. They tried to stuff us all into 1 booth. Then offered to put 2 square tables together, still not enough seats. Refused to allow us to slide tables together by the booth bench. Staff was rude, off-putting, and unwelcoming. "Manager" was incredibly bad at customer service. When the owner would rather turn away 9 people than move some tables, I can tell how much they care about their business and reputation.
