As a first time visitor for Sunday brunch, I thought the food was pretty good. It was a bit awkward walking into what I assume is the bar area because we not were greeted or directed where to go. This kind of set an impression of being unwelcoming in the beginning but when we walked around the corner past the dinning area to the host stand we were greeted and seated. We ordered shrimp and grits, which was good but I personally think the dish would've been elevated if they used a tempura batter instead of just grilling it in order to give the dish some different textures. The biscuits and gravy were kind of hard and we ordered the fries with the same gravy and for some reason the gravy on the fires tasted way better than on the biscuits. I also had pancakes which were delicious and the cheesy grits which were delicious and very creamy. I have just started taking a looking to grits and so far these are the best I've had. I didn't need to add anything to it. I would definitely love to go back for the grits, fries, and pancakes and try something new. read more

Went for Sunday brunch with reservations. Would not seat us until we were all present. Service was fine. It is a VERY noisy place. Carnivore was busy on a Sunday but great. They handled our large party with grace & pleasantries. Just before the weather broke so we were able to dine outside (enjoying both the weather & atmosphere of The Hill). I enjoyed the shrimp & grits with an added over easy egg. It is Dine out with our County friends night. It is our turn to pick a city restaurant. We chose Carnivore since we have not been there for quite a while. We made reservation for Thursday (tonight). They do have a waiting list when it gets busy. Tonight the table had a mix of choices for entrees. Two chicken Risotto dishes ,one ribeye steak and one caprese flatbread. My wifes friend and I had the chicken Risotto and it was delicous. A smooth creamy taste and melt in your mouth cubes of chicken, with sundried tomatoes and asparagus in a white wine sauce. This combination was a fantastic blend of flavors and textures. My wife had the flatbread. A flatbread brushed with olive oil with roma tomatoes ,mozzarella cheese with a balsamic vinegar drizzle glaze. She said the crust was crunchy and a tangy flavor with the balsamic drizzle and melted mozzarella cheese. My friend had the ribeye steak medium rare blackened with a baked potato side He enjoyed it and made quick work of it. This restaurant has lots of choices which makes this location a good place to have a quiet little dinner or a special family occasion. Everyone can get what they want with out just getting a steak which Carnivore is known for. Do not miss this fantastic restaurant in the Italian "Hill area of St. Louis. Our server was fantastic, very attentive, and on the ball about everything. My boyfriend and I's steaks were definitely overcooked, and the pasta was alright, just kind of watery. They were busy so we didn't say anything. It was a nice night, and the place was warm lit, relaxed and a good atmosphere. Came 2 times in a single week. Came my first time for brunch and had the fluffiest pancakes and best bacon of my life. Idk how they make the pancakes so thick and fluffy (ricotta?) but i'll never be able to eat other pancakes again. The blueberry butter on top was to die for. My only wish is that they move away from disposable smuckers syrup. I came back 3 days later for dinner and got the lemon chicken with a side of pasta, it was delicious and was a massive portion! I was texting a friend last week about Carnivore and for my review, I'll share excerpts from what I sent her: "Btw next time you're thinking The Hill, if you haven't tried Carnivore yet, I cannot recommend that place enough. I've had almost every item on their menu since it opened 6 years ago. Flavors and textures are unique and thoughtful. Specialty cocktails and desserts are also well crafted...I get stuck on faves at a lot of restaurants. But with Carnivore, I like to go there when I don't know what I'm in the mood for... a few years ago they started making tacos and speciality margs on Tuesdays so good..." and the brunch options are delightful. Overall, the atmosphere supports a comfortable dining experience.. One final note--Carnivore is one of the few restaurants these days where I've seen the same servers which I assume is a testament to good ownership and management. read more

Just dined at this steakhouse this evening. Disappointed is the best description of our experience, especially for a $116 check (for two people). Girlfriend got a 6 oz filet that was ordered medium well but arrived well done with no hint of pink in it at all and was completely flavorless, it had no sear on it and appeared to be incorrectly cooked by steaming it. She also got the carnivore potatoes and they were surprisingly bland. Neither the potatoes or steak appeared to be cooked with any salt or garlic. I ordered the steak modiga which we both came to the conclusion that it was a ribeye trimmed to pass as a filet cut. Very suspicious grain of the meat plus it had marbling through the middle of it. This was supposed to be a filet according to the menu. Ordered as a medium but arrived as a rare to medium rare depending on the part of the steak. Another couple a few tables away from us had to send their food back at least once and ended up getting food taken off their check. So they disappointed at least two tables tonight. We have no interest in returning. read more

We had arancini and the stuffed jalapeño appetizer. Arancini weren't what we were used to, there is no meat inside. The jalapeños were good and spicy hot. Loved the salsiccia inside. I have been to Carnivore several times, and each time I have been impressed. My favorite thing about Carnivore, is that you have items on the menu that typically only residents that call The Hill HOME know. Seriously, I have never seen luganiga anywhere on a menu (btw, it's delicious. And we love it) Once I stopped in before heading to The Fox. There were happy hour specials, so my girlfriends and I ordered several appetizers to share. I have been reminiscing about the arancini ever since! They were amazing Then I went to Brunch with friends. My husband who grew up on The Hill ordered the Italian Slinger. (He is hard to impress) He LOVED it, could not stop talking about it. Service was okay. Waitress was very attentive. The food, not so good with one exception. A very tasty side salad called the herbivore. My partner had a steak which was hard to cut, tough and chewy. He figured this place was known for its steaks so he couldn't go wrong but that turned out incorrect. High price for a pretty average hunk of meat. I tasted a piece and was taken aback by its lack of taste. It was like it was not aged properly. My chicken risotto was pretty bad. First, a risotto is supposed to be creamy and dreamy; cooked down over a long time. This was rice, just plain rice. It was extraordinarily salty. I know parmesano can be a salty cheese but this was beyond that; more like rice cooked with too much salt, then salt added, then parmesan. I took half home for next day but couldn't stomach any more so threw it out. So that was $11 plus in the trash for half an order. There was no ambiance to the place. The age of exposed pipes and industrial finishes has got to come to a stop, right? Standard Hill bread with tacky packets of butter. Unfortunately there's no desire to go back and try again. read more

That's a darn good Burger... ok, I skipped ahead. Brightly lit and open space, the Bar is separated from the dining area, but it gets pretty loud in here, so sit close to your dining companion. Noise level aside, the food and service was great. Reservation for 3 at 7p and was seated promptly at arrival. Started with the Shrimp appetizer and man that's an awesome sauce! So good in fact that I dipped the complimentary bread in the sauce, oh yes! The portion on the appetizer is large enough for 3 people, unless you're starving, then 2 people. Next up, the Burger and Fries. Medium-Well on the cook add American and crispy Bacon. Seasoning was on point and it was definitely juicy. Fries were crispy and also seasoned, but not overwhelming. My meal companions ordered the Shrimp Scampi Pasta and Salmon w/Salad respectively and nothing left on their plates if that gives you an idea. Enjoy! read more

By mishap ended up at Carnivore for dinner. Not your typical The Hill place however, such a nice mistake for me. Looking for steak near The Fabulous Fox and found this gem. Unassuming inside and out, we ate a high top bar table and still had exceptional service from the bartender Dalia! Both is us selected the steak special which was a wonderful encrusted strip steak with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, and white wine sauce that did not distract from the meat. Cooked perfectly. Took home Strawberry cheesecake which was equally good. Only four stars for a being a bit pricey for steak and salad but will return soon. read more

Came for brunch, the French toast was delicious but they only had breakfast syrup, no maple syrup. For such delightful French toast they really should have something better. This was our second trip and it was every bit as good as we remembered from last August we live 45 minutes away in Illinois so we can't get there as often as we'd like to, but in my opinion, you will not find better food you will not find a more friendly competent and attentive staff With fair pricing. Stephanie!! Let me start with her. Talk about a good waitress. Other restaurants should send their wait staff to Carnivore to learn from her. She was friendly, attentive, funny, and honestly made us feel like we were the only ones in there and they were busy. I even (this is rude...I know) yelled across the room for her because we were seated and found out that HH ended in 15 minutes. We ordered drinks - house Chardonnay, limencello martini, pearl vodka with 7up and a whiskey sour. She mentioned to the whiskey sour drinker that they add a little lemonade. The drinker said it was the best she ever had (she's 86 and has had her share of them, so if she said that I'm believing her). The house Chardonnay was really good, I was told. My drink vodka, cherries, and 7up was exceptional and the martini was (I was told) perfect. We also ordered a couple apps. Honestly, the steak modiga app was really, really rare. They set the plate down and the beautiful mushroom gravy turned into some purple sauce because of all the blood. The arancini were huge and the sauce they were in... that meat sauce and I are going to be pals FOREVER!! I want to mention that the place was clean but that is set up a little wonky. If you go through the door on the corner where the bar is in order to see a hostess you have to walk through the whole place to arrive at the other entrance. I was with 3 women. One had a stroke and she walks with a cane and another is 86. This is really inconvenient for them. HOWEVER, as I walked away to the other end to mention our reservations someone saw those 2 leaning against the wall and asked if they could help them. Nice!! Whomever reached out was going to get them seated. When I went to the hostess station she asked if we could wait for a minute because the kitchen had just had a big party. I said it wasn't a problem at all. I mentioned my 2 friends and said we were early but that if she could seat us and we would happily wait however long we needed to as long as those two were able to sit down. We had a lot to talk about so we would happily wait. She said (with a smile) "of course" and led me back into the dining room and sat us right inside the room where my friends were standing. I am willing to believe that she planned on putting us somewhere else but that she didn't want them to have to walk too far. It's those little things that can really make a difference. For dinner, I had the Grilled Chicken Limon. This was tender chicken (my friend who also got this has no use of one of her hands from a stroke, and she was able to cut hers with a fork). The unsung hero on this dish was the sautéed capers. Seriously... I'd buy a drink for whomever thought of doing that. It really elevated this dish. There was provel on the chicken too but they knew that chicken could stand by itself so it wasn't too much... just the perfect amount. I planned on getting the naked potato as a side, but with the option of pasta with that meat sauce as an option, it wasn't happening. The other 2 people at the table got burgers, and they were good and took 1/2 with them. I took half of my dinner home, too. I'm an eater, but when you give me 2(!) Chicken breasts and a sizable bowl of pasta I can't eat it all. (I woke up this morning and found out my boyfriend had eaten my leftovers...grrrr.) I'll be going back there soon, and honestly, I'm probably getting the same thing. read more
