Being a single man, I needed a place for Christmas Dinner. Typically I have always done dinner with cousins, but they now have married children and grandchildren to have holiday dinner with, so I went out on my own. I researched the internet for restaurants open on Christmas Day and picked, The Preston. I picked them based on their pre-fixed menu and price. After my dining experience, I would say it was a good choice and value. My Christmas dinner started off with a, Seared Scallop. I love Scallops and it really got my holiday meal off to a great start. Then I had a Beet Salad. It was the first time I had a beet salad with greens, but the spiced vinaigrette pulled it all together. My entree was, Prime Rib. It came with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Asparagus and Mushroom Bordelaise. The Prime Rib was fork tender. I enjoyed the potatoes and the asparagus still had a snap to it, which I like. I wasn't a fan of the Bordelaise. Yes, it did have a good flavor, I just wanted my prime rib, plain. My dessert was a, French Silk Tart. You can't go wrong with chocolate. When I arrived I told the host since I was a single diner, I wouldn't mind sitting at the bar. He thanked me and told me I'd be pleased with Madeline the bartender. He was right, she was attentive and made my Christmas dinner enjoyable. read more

My friend and I stopped here for breakfast not realizing it was inside the Chase Park Plaza, but because they took reservations, which we needed ahead of a morning flight. First and foremost, I loved the ambiance. It was bright and open with modern, upscale touches. The menu looks pretty appealing and had some upscale takes on standard breakfast fare. I ordered the Good Morning Mr. Preston sandwich. Unfortunately, it was very dry and lackluster - even after asking for an extra side of aioli, it was pretty disappointing. We were looking for a good spot on Christmas Eve and my mom stumbled upon this one. She loved that it was in a hotel because she knew it would be great photos, and she was right. We snagged some adorable ones next to all the holiday decor and trees! The restaurant itself is very modern, I think we expected fancy but it was a mix. Definitely some people in casual and some dressed up. There were only two servers which was expected on Christmas Eve, and we thought they did fantastic. We had Greg who was attentive the whole night! Very friendly and easy to talk to. The cocktails were unique and delicious. We split the charcuterie on the table and it had some really great cheeses. The pickles were fantastic. We also got beet salads which I loved because they had CHUNKS of beets! I got the chicken and my husband got the lamb. Both were so tender and flavorful. So good. The star of the show was the s'mores parfait that they even lit on fire in front of us! So amazing! This isn't a come in for dinner and you're out in 45 minutes. It's a slow and enjoyable dinner. Came for Easter brunch with the family and loved it! We normally are at a different hotel for our annual Easter brunch but this year I booked too late and found space at The Preston and was absolutely blown away! They have amazing appetizers including tuna tartare, they had an oyster bar, everyone gets an a la carte main, the dessert tables are to die for and the mimosas are bottomless! We were trying to find a new brunch spot and remembered this restaurant inside the Chase Park Plaza. We got here around 10:30am and the hotel was busy. We waited at the host stand for quite sometime before we were greeted, and then waited for an additional 25 minutes to be seated. They had a small, but great menu to ensure there's something for everyone. We ordered right away and the food came out piping hot! We ordered the Classic, Good morning Preston and the blueberry pancakes. The Good Morning Preston dish was a take on a Croque Monsieur and it was Devine! But I will say the blueberry pancakes is what I remember. They were perfectly fluffy and flavorful. This is a must see place especially if you've never been to the Chase Park Plaza. We had brunch at The Preston the other day inside of the Chase Park Plaza. From the time you walk in everything is super charming and tasteful. You can tell it is an old building but it still sparkles and is endearing. We had a group of 10 of us and a reservation at 11:30 but did not get sat until 11:45am, which is not atypical for large parties it seems. Our table shared a couple bottles of champagne and my mother in law shared the avocado toast and the eggs meurette. The avocado toast lacked some 'umps' but it was good. The eggs meurette was definitely my favorite. I would have liked a little more of the pork belly but overall the dish was very good. One other perk was that the restaurant was able to validate our valet parking so that was complimentary which was nice. read more

Hot water took 30 mins, said he had "the kettle brewing." When we voiced a concern he said bar and kitchen were backed up. There were 3 other tables of guests besides us!!!I and when food arrived the 3 people who ordered Pea soup didn't eat it because it was too salty. The Cauliflower entree was uncooked and the chicken overcooked. The ambiance is casual and room filled with cooking-smoke (no ventilation), not as they present it upscale. Talked my friend into walking over to the Chase Park Plaza for breakfast after the 8am mass at the Cathedral Basilica. The selections on the menu were perfect. I chose the Eggs Benedict and added fruit and potatoes, which surprisingly were not included with my entree (and the reason I deducted one star.) Calm quiet atmosphere, as there were only a couple other diners eating when we arrived. Attentive service and they take Apple pay, thank God, because I left my wallet 0.6 miles away in my car. I loved the shrimp Francese dish it was excellent as well as the unique crab cake. The breakfast was amazing. My egg, sausage, arugula and cheese on a crossiant was so delicious. It came with a huge portion of the most delicious fried potatoes. I had the pancakes too and they were very good. Oh, I did not like the s'mores dessert or the crème brûlée. They both were pretty awful. My review is for the food and not desserts!! We received good service from all staff members inside of the restaurant. No complaints at all! The drinks were good, the small plates were bigger than I was expecting and the space is quite beautiful. Fried deviled eggs came in a set of 6, which was perfect. They were good, but not as good as the calamari. Calamari was spicy and large. GET THIS STUFF. Salad was simple but acceptable and risotto balls were delish. They will validate valet parking, but beware that (at least on this evening) the valet was not accepting more cars, even for hotel guests. They had to self park. This is a great spot to go before an event, dressed up, to grab a drink and apps. I will be back for this very purpose. It's not really a dinner spot. read more

I can't believe the Preston has been inside the Chase now for so many years and I have not had the pleasure of eating dinner here before now. The interior is beautiful and classic. Our dinner was in the back private wine room, which was very comfortable yet grand. First of all.... the pre meal rolls...omg. Even the most carb conscious needs to eat these. I ordered the mushroom from the small plates menu. I was expecting mushroom tart but it was actually a bowl with an incredible assortment of wild mushrooms, pearl onion, bacon and a puff pastry. For my entree I had the duck and grits. It came with a squash broth to pour over. It was glorious! I could not have been more pleased with the food and service. That added an extra star because really the experience overall was more of a 3-star situation. Nothing over the top extraordinary. But if someone needed a new spot to try I'd suggest it. I've been to this restaurant when it was whatever it was before and it seemed more upscale for some reason then. But that's not to take away from the environment now. I can just tell there's been a change. I wouldn't recommend the buffet brunch because it was continental-breakfastish. I wouldn't pay $22 for muffins and eggs and sausage. The Preston really came through last night. We sat at the bar where Dustin took great care of us. He makes a mean margarita. If you're not sure about the parking situation, read my previous review to decide what to do. As we sipped our drinks, we looked over the menu and I was pleasantly surprised to see some new items on it. We decided to share the deep fried deviled eggs. They had a great crispy crust on them with trout roe, capers and dill. Six to an order or three whole eggs. They were very good. On to our second course. He decided on the parsnip soup with a scallop and mushrooms. He scraped the bowl clean. I went with the crab salad which was quite tasty. Rice granola, pickled apple, a green onion puree made the dish. Yes, we are going to get another course. Remember these are small plates. He went with the pork belly which came with brussel sprouts. There was a big discussion as to whether he wanted them on his plate (he does not like brussel sprouts) but he finally relented when I said I would like to have a few. I chose the pan seared branzino which came with a small panzanella salad with vinaigrette. I loved my fish and the salad was just the right accompaniment. I looked over at his plate and most of the brussel sprouts were gone. I quickly grabbed a few and they were delicious. A crispy outside with an Asian flavor. I know a certain fellow yelper that I believe would absolutely love them. Of course we had dessert. We picked the chocolate cherry which came out like a type of mousse cake with brandied cherries and was outstanding. Would I come back here? So I still think $48 brunch is ridiculously extravagant but I'd gladly fork over twice that amount for the dinner offered here. I was a bit indecisive on both cocktails and dessert so I requested Glenn surprise me. He arrived with winners on both occasions. I could actually go on & on about how awesome Glenn was but it wouldn't be fair to The Preston lol. I just wanted to wrap him up in a doggie bag and take him home. Here's what you should order: 1. Our food-oriented tour of St. Louis featured places having a historic connection to Route 66. Back in the day, the Chase and Park Plaza (then separate hotels) represented the pinnacle of luxury for travelers. Following many changes through the years, fine contemporary dining landed at this beautifully restored landmark with the opening of The Preston in early 2016. Anticipating a glorious repast, I studied the online menu--a list of 19 'small plates'--prior to our visit. As it turned out, our group had a private dining reservation for lunch along with a set menu (the Preston is not otherwise open for lunch). Chef Nathan Sandknop graciously emerged from the back room to welcome us. Then we were served a salad (greens, pickled onion, and seasonal vegetables), bacon meatloaf with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts, and gooey butter cake with cranberry compote and oatmeal tuile. Now, I know meatloaf is a Route 66 staple, but there is no food on this planet that I loathe more. Just hearing the M-word makes me cringe. The typical response I get from well-meaning cooks, "... that's because you haven't tasted MY meatloaf!" is tantamount to the hideous screech of fingernails on a chalkboard. Anyway, this version must've been really scrumptious because everyone else in our party gobbled it up. And--rare for me--I managed to swallow several bites without gagging (hey, Nathan, that's a compliment!). The salad and accompanying sides were more to my liking, but having anticipated a more upscale meal, those seemed pedestrian. Only afterwards did I grasp that our entrée actually derived from the menu of Chase Club, the hotel's informal gastropub. Oh, well. Inside the Chase Plaza with free valet service (needs validation) or Uber is the way to go now-a-days, I love the Preston, not for dinner - but for pre-drinks and appetizers/tapas by the bar. It's sleek, modern, sexy - it's like where you go to feel pretty with my red lipstick and little black dress, have a cocktail on a first date or just to rekindle an anniversary. Pros: 1) Open Table option, but again just go to the bar 2) Cocktails. HorseFeather b/c I love Ginger Beer and Whiskey 3) Monkfish, Octopus, and in general the Seafood items were not overcooked and spot on. 4) Tiramisu!! 5) Attentive Service. But mostly because I have generally never seen it busy when I go Cons: 1) So- the reason why I don't think you want to come here for "dinner" - this places seems like it's a small plate place or it just hasn't quite figured itself out from plates to share, to appetizers vs entree. Consequently, the weekend personality is the worst yet that's when the prices are the highest. I will start with my first experience and then merge into the last & worst. Dinner: Just getting seating was odd. I was walked by the Hostess to a table only to find it wasn't ready. I was told to stand there & it would be cleaned shortly, ok. While I stood there, in a very nasty tone a man walked over & said "what is she doing here" so I responded "I'm waiting for the table to be cleared". The man still didn't address me & told the woman who seated me "take her outside." As soon as we walked back out, someone came to the Hostess & told her to bring me back. WTF!!! Talk about feeling uncomfortable I was just walked in, out, in & now I'm being gawked at. That experience is what led to 4 stars for dinner. I will say I'm glad I didn't let my immediate first bad encounter deter me from having a meal that night. Word to the wise, if there is a room full of people that all look alike & one person that doesn't look like them walks in the room instead of ostracizing them you should be mindful that they're even there. I felt like my standing brown presence was a bother. I didn't come to protest or fill out an application; I came to pay money to eat - like the other people here. My service after that was so awesome (shout out to Anthony), as well as the food. My appetizer came before my drink that I ordered first but all was well. The Korean Chicken Wings appear in a set of 3. The wings were intertwined like synchronized swimmers; I hate having to handle cooked meat but this rough housing was worth it. They were layered atop the sauce so you get the chance to catch the flavor of all the components. The kitchen let the beauty & delicacy of the Barramundi show & didn't mask it with a heavy sauce. Sunday Brunch: When I was here for dinner before I inquired and the server brought me a menu that had the name "The Preston" on top, the word "Brunch" and $22. I thought why not give it a try. How embarrassing! I was scouting out brunch places to hold an Unofficial Yelp Event & I foolishly invited another Yelper to try the place out with me. Imagine my shock & loss for words when we were both given a $50+ brunch tab that only included the subpar food (we both left hungry), dismissive service & incoherent Management. NOTE: there are TWO brunches at the Preston - they wont be clear with you so make sure you let them know if you want the $22 brunch of the $50 brunch. Our server, an older gentleman whose name I never really caught didn't come unless he was prompted to come over. Oddly enough he stood at the door with the Manager for at least an hour. When we tried to show him the Yelp check-in offer, he got defensive as if it was coming out of his pocket & actually said, "I just work here." Before that he was saying the offer was only for dinner but it stated no such thing - just 10% off of any visit. Preston Management, how do you have a public offering that not only your servers don't know about but not even the Manager that was on duty?! For there to be such an elaborate spread there is meat discrimination. I saw so much pork, beef & seafood but no turkey or chicken options or even vegan options. The Chefs at the omelet station & one younger server who helped me carry my plates to the table were great. If the food was good then personally $50, ok but nothing was delicious. Dry waffles & not even pancakes. Brunch came with a mimosa but it was below basic too! If you don't like frozen macaroons/pasties then go elsewhere. As we gazed around the room we could see others shock when they saw the bill. It almost makes me feel like the server & manager were standing guard at the door to make sure no one ran out after they were presented with that high bill. I live in walking distance, I go out to eat 3+ times a week & do brunch somewhere EVERY weekend. The Preston is brand new to St. Louis and easily one of the top ten new places I've eaten in STL the past year. Located just inside The Chase, this tapas style bar is exactly what you'd expect from an upscale hotel. The space is freshly renovated; they did an amazing job. The massive open kitchen is a great backdrop to the upscale ambiance. Anyways, let's cut to "the chase"...see what I did there? The food and drink is boss. It's New American cuisine served on small plates to share. My girlfriend and I split the Charred Octopus, Bread Plate and Scallop Chowder. They have the best damn bread plate I have ever had. Don't think of the bread plate as, "oh it's just a filling dish" because it isn't. It came with three different flavor-packed spreads, two pretzel croissants, one wheat roll and one jalepeno cheddar biscuit. All of the bread was fresh and warm but I basically could have eaten those spreads alone. As for the Charred Octopus and Scallop Chowder, get them. They're extremely decadent and filling. Their cocktail list is nothing short of unique. I got the Nancy's Night Out that comes Bulleit bourbon, Big 'O', grapefruit and crystallized ginger. The ginger is basically candy and who doesn't like candy with their booze? They definitely don't skimp out on presentation here. Loved it. Sometimes when you hear 'hotel bar' you picture sad businessmen in droopy suits, tourists in khaki shorts, and watery, overpriced pours served in dim lighting. Gratefully, The Preston is none of these things. Yes, it happens to be in the lobby of the Chase Park Plaza, but once you set foot through the doors you'd never know you were in a hotel. I loved the decor - sleek and clean without being cold. The bartenders were serving up intricate craft cocktails (fire was involved) but they were friendly and nothing about the place had any pretension. The menu helped conveyed that they had a sense of humor - the drink I ordered was named Big Trouble in Little China after the delightful mid-80s John Carpenter flick starring Kurt Russell. Since it's my boyfriend's favorite movie (tied with Rocky), I couldn't not try it. All I have to say is that ginger beer and five spice were meant to be friends. It was supremely drinkable and I wish I hadn't been so tired so I could have stayed and explored more of their cocktail menu. read more
