    New England seafood chowder
    Kisha F.

I struggled with deciding on where to go to celebrate my birthday. When I learned it was Clayton Restaurant week, we decided to try a place we haven't been in Clayton and chose Oceano Bistro. We had reservations so we were immediately seated. Our waiter, Maxwell was very helpful, friendly and provided exceptional service. My husband and I tried a glass of wine. My daughter had the Smoked Peach Martini. She thought is was OK. She wanted to the peach flavor to be more prevalent. For Clayton Restaurant week, they offered a 3 course meal for a great deal. We had the Maryland lump crab cakes, New England seafood chowder, Warm water sea bass, 12 ounce Prime New York strip, cheesecake, and flourless chocolate cake. My favorite of the appetizers was the crab cakes. They were very meaty and delicious. I enjoyed the chowder as well but I needed to add a little salt. My daughter had the strip which was cooked perfectly. She enjoyed it very much. My husband and I both had the sea bass. It was really good but our fish was not cooked the same. His was perfectly seared with crispy edges but still moist and flaky. Mine could have used more sear on it. The flavor was still good but where I thought it was good, he felt his was great. I chose the cheesecake for dessert and they chose the flourless chocolate cake. The cheesecake was good but the chocolate cake is the clear winner between the two. Oh, they also offered bread service at the beginning of our meal. The oil that they prepare for dipping was really good as well. Overall, it was a pretty good experience and I would try other options.

This is a picture of the halibut in orzo. It's not right from the kitchen. I had already started eating when I snapped this picture.

We stumbled upon Oceana during lent. Happily, were able to make a same afternoon/early evening reservation. Walked in during happy hour - it was hopping!. We were just in time to order a calamari happy hour appetizer. it was hot can cooked perfectly. I then moved on to the halibut and orzo - it was exactly what I was looking for! A perfectly cooked halibut with orzo - nothing heavy. We did however have the cookies as dessert.....and while they take 15-20 minutes to cook - IT IS WORTH THE WAIT!! The cookies arrive hot and gooey to the table - yum. The only 2 drawbacks I will mention...it seemed very loud and we were sitting under one of the arches so we were trying to determine was the restaurant really that loud or were we getting conversations from other areas because of the arches? The other item I will mention is the website does not seem to be up to date with the latest selection - or maybe it needs to be broken out into Lunch and Dinner menus...a person in our party looked at the menu online and when he went to order, he wanted one of the sandwiches shown online (which was not identified as lunch only) and he was not able to order the sandwich. General observation: I would guestimate 90% of the seating is booth seating...it just seemed high and just an observation - not good, not bad.

We hosted a surprise engagement dinner for my brother at Oceano Bistro, and it was absolutely perfect from start to finish. I was the party planner for the night and had the pleasure of working with Max, their events manager, who was incredible, responsive, kind, and so easy to work with throughout the entire process. We had 12 people in a semi-private setting, and everything ran seamlessly. From helping select menu items to ensuring food came out on time and well-paced, the service was attentive without ever feeling rushed. Truly top-tier hospitality. We started with salads, then shared calamari, grilled prawns, and roasted vegetables--all delicious. Everyone ordered their own entrée, and every dish arrived hot, beautifully plated, and with generous portions. I had the scallops with Parmesan risotto, which were cooked perfectly. The cocktails were strong but well-balanced and thoughtfully made. We ended the night with a champagne toast, and the fathers ordered the peach cobbler--I snagged a bite, and it was amazing. Highly recommend Oceano Bistro whether you're planning a special occasion, a large group dinner, or even a date night. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

I stopped by tonight for a quick bite to eat and Oceano, again didn't disappoint. With a European feel they have a great bar, wonderful staff and a big happy hour bar menu. At 5:00 the place was buzzing and the bar quickly filled up. I chose a Macon Villages, Bourgogne French Chardonnay and Ahi Tuna Roll - thinly sliced tuna covered an amazing, crunchy slaw dressed with a simple ginger mustard sauce. It was light, fresh and delicious. $10 for the wine and $14 for the tuna also makes it a fantastic value! The bar tender made it special by being friendly, helpful and welcoming. That along with the manager checking in to make sure everything was ok sets this happy hour apart. Oceano has become a mainstay in Clayton and this wasn't my first visit. It is always a delightful experience with a varied menu of delicious food for brunch, lunch and dinner. It's also a comfortable spot to just have a cocktail. Happy hour 3-6 M-F 2:30-4:30 on Saturdays. Choices for food range from $10 - $16 and with a wide variety including fries, flatbreads, Kobe sliders, crab cakes and more. Outdoor dining available during good weather.

Stopped by here for drinks after dinner at another place. To be quite honest, I wish we would have had dinner here. I had a local ipa at the bar. Bartender and staff is very friendly and attentive. While bar is casual, restaurant appears upscale. Great date place!

We came here fairly late and I was afraid the kitchen would be closed. We came in and they were very welcoming and assured us the kitchen was still open and ready to take our order. I ordered the halibut and a side salad. The bread came out first and the olive oil had a pepper paste sprinkled in. The flavor was unreal. We asked the waitress/bartender what it was and she said it was a homemade paste they make and incorporate in some of the dishes. The flavor was amazing! Then our salads came out fresh and quick. The star of the show was the main dish, the halibut. The fish was cooked perfectly and again that flavor was devine. We will be coming back here when we are back in the area for sure.

Great food, service & ambiance at Oceano! We had a bunch of apps: oysters, crab cakes, carpaccio and the seafood pasta & soup. We loved the homemade chocolate chip cookies! We had a large group, and they were very accommodating and kind!

I had the pleasure of visiting this place for the first time and I was completely blown away! Delicious food, beautiful ambiance and awesome service! We started with the crab cakes for an appetizer and they were phenomenal, 3 crab cakes came with the order which I thought was a great value for crab cakes. I had the spinach salad and my aunt had the seafood chowder, both were delish! For my main course, I had the seafood linguine that had lobster crab, shrimp and mussels in the dish, it was good. A little oily, since it was an oil based sauce but very flavorful. My aunt had the halibut and she said it was superb. We finished with dessert, I had their seasonal strawberry cake which was outstanding and my aunt had the bread pudding which was paired with vanilla ice cream. Our server Berkeley was great, attentive and friendly with just the right amount of table touches. This was our first time going there but won't be our last. It is one of the few restaurants open all day in a Sunday and even though it was in Clayton, parking close to the restaurant was easy and parking was free on Sundays. Check out Oceano Bistro!

I was there for dinner and I ordered the Pan Seared Alaskan Halibut and it was served with a vegetable orzo. The Halibut was cooked perfectly. Sometimes it's overcooked and dried out. The halibut was moist and flavorful. The halibut was complimented with a vegetable orzo. The orzo was also delicious. My taste buds were very happy. For me this meal was very filling. I usually like to try a soup or salad but not today. The gentleman that was our waiter did an excellent job of making recommendations and listening to our needs. The restaurant is in Clayton. After 5pm you do not have to feed the meter for parking. Great food and service!

Went for brunch. Service courteous, maybe overly solicitous. Comfortable atmosphere and maybe a bit noisy which I find to be the case in many restaurants. Food was nicely prepared but not as impressive as the prices indicate.

This place was amazing--from the food to the service! My fiancée and I had a large family dinner there to celebrate, and everything was perfect. The staff and manager were incredibly helpful and stayed in touch with us in the weeks leading up to the big night to make sure every detail was covered. We couldn't have been happier. It was our first time there, and I know this will be my future wife and my new go-to spot!

Clayton Restaurant Week is always great. We have gone to a lot of restaurants during this time. None have disappointed. We had gone earlier in January to Oceano. It was so good we decided to go this time again for restaurant week. The menu had not changed since the last one and I was happy because one of the menu items is lobster. You get two 6 oz lobster tails. They are prepared beautifully with drawn butter and a vegetable. Really delicious! The menu has three areas to choose. Apps, entrees and desserts. Base price is 59$. Last time I got halibut and it was fantastic. We had great service from Ran. He was attentive and super friendly. Thank you Ran! Manager/owner checked on us. That's a really nice thing to do. Restaurant is tastefully decorated with a nice bar. If you ever see restaurant week advertised in Clayton or anywhere else in the St. Louis area, go! You won't be disappointed.

Clayton was busy, so street parking was hard to find. Once seated, we were greeted with friendly service and were brought water. I ordered a ginger beer with cranberry juice added to it for a refreshing mocktail. We ordered the Squeaky Cheese to start, the golden-brown cheese curds were gooey and had the perfect crunch. They were served with marinara and a serrano dill aioli. The aioli had just the right amount of spice, complementing the dill flavor. The marinara was saucy and also good. I ordered the Bacon Jam Burger with fries. The burger was juicy, sweet, and had a nice crunch. The bacon jam was subtle, but it enhanced the overall flavor. My only complaint was that the bottom bun came out a bit soggy causing the burger to lose structure as I ate it. The fries were thin and crunchy! I had a lovely experience and would like to come back to try a cocktail!

Nothing divey about a hip cocktail or hip deviled eggs -- these are sophisticated modern twists, the exact move wine bars make and dives don't. A chalkboard of specials and weathered seating gesture at the aesthetic; the rest of the room knows. Kendall Roy of restaurants -- comes from privilege, wants badly to be of the people. It's a bit, and mostly the kitchen and bar back it up. Nevertheless, we arrived to a full room, hour wait for a table, but we fortunately arrived to snag the last first come patio table. The bar was also full, by the way, which felt neighborhood like, people clearly like this place during happy hour. The old fashioned makes the case: Old Grand-Dad Bonded, pickled rye, cognac, butterscotch bitters. Two whiskeys and a bitter you won't find at an actual dive. Rich, a little sweet. The harissa deviled eggs keep going -- fried shallots, roasted red peppers, cilantro, marinated tomato jam. You know, just like the old dive with the $1 PBR.Deviled eggs for people that don't like deviled eggs. However, we love deviled eggs...foreshadowing. The short ribs are the headline -- fall-apart tender over whipped potatoes substantial enough to stand up to the meat, gravy spot on. Eats like a perfectly executed roast dinner. The brie burger is the sneaky second hit, genuinely decadent, bacon with the cheese melting into the beef. The service was good and pleasant and that felt more like dive-friendly, where you might expect a wine "bar" to be snooty or full of themselves. 4.4 Stars Picking Nits: hip deviled eggs that reach past what they can hold. Tomato jelly on top is a lot going on, in the wrong way, and the egg disappears under it. These are trying to be hip deviled eggs more than they're trying to be good deviled eggs. Every ambitious kitchen has one plate that tries too hard; this appears to be one. A 5 needs those eggs landing, in the same way the entrees excelled. Regardless, we'll be back.

Cooked perfectly, fresh and delicious. The wilted romaine seemed odd at first but totally rounded out the potato mash at the base, with the absolute flavor-bomb of the shiitakes. Highly recommend this dish any day! My boyfriend opted for the NY Strip; we both agreed it was one of the best steaks we'd ever had; seasoned perfectly and cooked masterfully. There was a slight mishap whereby a food runner gave him a tasting portion of the strip (likely meant for another table); we first didn't realize and were very disappointed with the size. However, without a word from us, the chef came out and personally explained, apologized, and corrected--I didn't snap a photo of the full portion when it came out, but it was perfect and much more what we expected. That brings me to the service, which was spectacular. Several staff members gave us a personal touch and they all seemed to be genuinely happy to be there. The space is beautiful and intimate. It was moderately busy and still quiet. The atmosphere feels upscale, but not pretentious or unapproachable. This place was on my radar for a long time, and I sure wish I'd gone long ago. I don't even remember the food that just popped up in my memories because apparently, I never finished the review! So let's try this again. First of all, this place has such a dark, romantic, and all-around great vibe. It's the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to sit back, enjoy your drink, and take your time. The staff was doing their best to accommodate everyone and keep things moving in a timely fashion, even though they were pretty busy. When you're single, there's almost always room at the bar, so I squeezed in and ordered a drink I've been partial to lately. The barback had no idea what I was talking about, but no worries. He asked the female bartender, she Googled it, and she made it wonderfully! I forgot to mention that I like my drink served up, martini style, so I ended up having it with ice this time. No big deal because it was still made amazingly and tasted great. And while we're talking about ice, I'm the same way with my water. I like my water COLD, but I do not want ice in it. Then came the $10 burger and fries, and let me tell you, I was NOT expecting what came out. For $10, I assumed I was getting some tiny slider-sized burger, but nope! Out came this BIG ASS burger with a gorgeous pile of fries. I was shocked! And even better, both the burger and fries tasted great. I am so full right now I can hardly breathe!!! Overall, this was another great solo date with myself. The atmosphere was amazing, the staff was accommodating, my drink was delicious, and that $10 burger and fries was an absolute steal. Sometimes taking yourself out is exactly what you need, and this was definitely a date worth repeating. And the best part? Extremely affordable!!!
