This was the second stop of my "progressive birthday dinner" (three stops; one for apps, one for entree, one for dessert). After a whole lot of research, knowing I wanted scallops for a main, I chose The Crossing. Our meal started with a complimentary offering of their bleu cheese soufflé with crisps and bread service--both delicious. I enjoyed a glass of their current "by the glass" Chardonnay, and my boyfriend got a Yeungling (poured table-side). I got my scallops, as planned, which certainly did not disappoint. Cooked perfectly, fresh and delicious. The wilted romaine seemed odd at first but totally rounded out the potato mash at the base, with the absolute flavor-bomb of the shiitakes. Highly recommend this dish any day! My boyfriend opted for the NY Strip; we both agreed it was one of the best steaks we'd ever had; seasoned perfectly and cooked masterfully. There was a slight mishap whereby a food runner gave him a tasting portion of the strip (likely meant for another table); we first didn't realize and were very disappointed with the size. However, without a word from us, the chef came out and personally explained, apologized, and corrected--I didn't snap a photo of the full portion when it came out, but it was perfect and much more what we expected. That brings me to the service, which was spectacular. Several staff members gave us a personal touch and they all seemed to be genuinely happy to be there. The space is beautiful and intimate. It was moderately busy and still quiet. The atmosphere feels upscale, but not pretentious or unapproachable. This place was on my radar for a long time, and I sure wish I'd gone long ago. This review is long overdue considering we cam in February (whoops!) This is a celebration/special occasion spot for sure, but your money will be well spent and every bite is worth it. As we were celebrating my birthday, we opted for the "Premium Tasting Menu" with wine pairing. Though not stated on the menu, you can swap in the majority of the dishes from the a la carte menu. Menu highlights for me included the Spanish octopus & the quail. At the recommendation of our server, we tried the Lemon Semifreddo for dessert and were pleased. No dish was bad though, unless you are absolutely opposed to some flavor I don't think you can go wrong. Other special touches: a card at the table wishing me a happy birthday and a bonus sample of the octopus since we had mentioned to our server we wanted to try it. Our server was top notch - perfectly attentive, provided good advice, and didn't rush us. I loved the art (from a local artist) around the restaurant, and our table in a small nook was a fun spot. I have been here before, but I haven't reviewed it. This place is fantastic!! Its located in downtown Clayton and has valet parking right in front of the restaurant. Its relatively small inside, but cozy. A nice touch - is they offer a free coat check, so you don't have to carry your bulky coats to the table. The service here is really outstanding- but I think a huge benefit is they cook seed oil free- meaning everything is cooked either in butter or olive oil. They source local ingredients- rotate lots of different seasonal specials and also have a chefs tasting menu. You can really tell they care about food quality here. Many of us did go with the Chefs Tasting menu which they are also very flexible about- meaning if a special isn't on the menu you can subsitute it, etc. You truly could put together your own tasting menu. They start the table with crackers and a blue cheese souffle. Then they also offer a plain bread with butter which is amazing! Such a nice touch! Then we got stone crab as an appetizer - which was a special and came with a mustard dipping sauce!! It was great- I just wished they cracked the stone crab a bit more as it was hard to get into. We got a variety of menu and special dishes- Tuna Tartare, Soup of the day- Mushroom, Mixed Green Salad, Spanish Octopus, Pasta special, Sea Bass special, Missouri Trout, and Porkbelly Special. We also had a Chai Creme Brulee for dessert. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. This is one of my favorite spots! I also love how they will bag your leftovers and leave them up front by the coat check so you grab it on the way out. They think of all the little details here. Overall experience 5/5. read more

There is nothing happier than a French girl at a French restaurant eating foie gras and cheesy bread. This is to say, I loved this restaurant. Perfect date night spot. The vibe is definitely classy, and you want to dress up. Our waiter was SO friendly and we quickly had a good rapport with him. You can order a la carte here or get the tasting menu. I recommend the tasting menu. For value, it's pretty great, and you get to try a lot more things (especially if you and your partner get different things and split). We each got the 4-course tasting menu, at around $75 per person with some upcharges for certain items, allowing us to try 8 dishes. ALSO, they came out with complimentary crostinis and melted cheese, as well as bread and butter, before our courses began coming out. I'll give a brief description and rating of each course, but I'll just say that generally, you likely can't go wrong here. Steak Tartare: 5/10 - I love steak tartare but the ratio of yolk to meat was too high. The steak was fresh and tasty, though. Also a hefty portion for a starter. Beet Salad: 8.5/10 - Loved this! It comes presented in a unique "layered" style, and the interplay of the creamy goat cheese and crunchier beets is awesome. Foie gras: 9/10 - Like I said, I just love foie gras. It's rare that places do it well without turning it into a paste. This is where it's at. And pairing it with berries is something I do when I make it at home too, so overall, big win. I do think this is a special, though, so unfortunately may not be available always. Escargot: 8/10 - This was a fun take on escargot, as you usually just see it in garlic butter. This had a bit of a different sauce, thicker and emulsified. The escargot were also well cooked and not too chewy. Quail: 8/10 - Surprisingly had a good portion of quail meat, which can sometimes be hard to find with this foul. The butternut squash and mushrooms on the side felt like a good umami coupling to the less rich meat, which itself was super moist1 Steak: 7/10 - Not the best steak. We got it rare which it was, but even then, the meat itself was so soft and squishy that it was a bit texturally weird. I normally get steak "Pittsburgh" style, so it's not an issue of it being too "rare." Otherwise, the mashed potatoes on the side were SO good we couldn't get enough. Chocolate Torte: 9/10 - YUMMY! If you like chocolate, you like this. The fudginess of this torte is so lovely. And with the vanilla gelato, you can't go wrong! Chai creme brûlée: 7/10 - A bit soupy for my liking, but the chai flavor, while subtle, was fun and unique. read more

Wowwwwww. I'll start with that. I was looking for a good spot for our first wedding anniversary and this spot kept coming up in recommendations. There's a reason for that. We made a reservation and they had a cute little note at the table for us. The service was incredible all night. We were so amazed at how well we were taken care of - not just by our waitress but the bar staff, kitchen, literally never went without anything. We did the grand tasting menu and holy. Moly. This was one of the best meals we've ever had. Truly. I'll try to remember all the courses - Tuna tartare with creme fraiche for our first course, seared cod (I'm not a huge fish eater but woah), whitefish stew (flaky fish), house made pasta which was incredible, tender duck, local beef, dessert. So much food, we did not go hungry. Everything was so well spiced, sauced, and cooked to perfection. This is definitely a splurge meal, we shared a bottle of wine and with tip it was upwards of $500 but for our first anniversary it was 100% worth it. My partner and I placed a reservation for Valentine's Day on January 17. However, we were informed via email just two weeks prior from Valentine's Day that the price of the Premium Tasting Menu ($75/person; 4 courses) would be doubled to $150/person (same 4 course dishes but called Valentines Menu). With other Valentine's Day dinner spots fully booked at this point, we moved our dinner to a week earlier and chose the Chef's Grand Tasting Menu ($150/person; 8 courses). Some dishes, like the Lemon Semifreddo and Alaskan Halibut, were outstanding. However, when we received our bill, we noticed an unauthorized $15/person charge ($330 total). The restaurant had added truffles to our dishes without asking if we wanted this additional ingredient, and therefore added the charge. They removed the charge when we questioned it, but the practice felt dishonest. For a great fine dining experience, I'd recommend Sado or iNDO instead. read more

This is definitely a place to celebrate a special occasion or to have just an all around great meal with great service. When you first walked in you are greeted by the hostess and if you have a reservation (and you do need reservations here on the weekend) they walk you to your table. It is a classy feel with white tableclothes and proper silverware that they refresh after each course. We alway get the tasting menu (4 courses) which is a great way to get a taste of so much of their good food. It is smaller plates than their regular menu but you will definitely be full by the end of the night. They also have a great bar and wine selection. Their menu changes based off the season. Usually they do have the Tagliatelle with beef ragu bolognese which is amazing. Ask the waiter/waitress for their suggestions and guidance, we have never been steered wrong. Also if you like the complimentary cheese souffle they give you at the beginning you can order another one. Overall we try to come here a couple times a year. It is highly recommended. read more

I enjoyed an excellent birthday meal here back in April! My mom found the restaurant online, and thought it looked great for a special occasion. She was definitely right! The environment is unique-- upscale and refined yet very comfortable! Our server was very friendly without crowding us, and gave us great service throughout the evening. I opted for the tasting menu, which I thought was an excellent value at $65. They said the portions would be a little smaller than ordering each course a la carte, but I have a pretty big appetite and was totally satisfied. Of note was their delicious mushroom tagliatelle, which I had as my second course. But every course was excellent, from their complimentary homemade bread to the warm chocolate torte! Girl Dinner October 2025: The Crossing in Clayton We did the prixe fixe tasting menu for $75 each... First Course we opted for: Roasted Beet Salad - Goat cheese, mascarpone, toasted pine nuts, shallots, sherry vinegar. (I dont normally care for beets but this was delicious!) Hamachi Crudo* - Lemon zest, chives, wasabi creme, trout roe, chili oil. (I could eat this every day!) Second Course: Spanish Octopus - Tonnato, basil, English peas, smoked potatoes, arugula, pickled peppers, balsamic reduction. (I LOVE octopus but this one left me slightly underwhelmed. It was a little overcooked and chewy.) We also had chefs creation spinach cannoli but I don't recall how it was made. Main course we opted for Missouri Grassfed Prime NY Strip with Pomme purée, broccoli, carrots, bone marrow butter Plus Nantucket Sea Scallops with Crushed potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, romaine, Parmigiano-Reggiano, lemon truffle. I will never visit this restaurant because of how they treat people. I parked outside the restaurant to grab a drink at Starbucks next door. I did not notice the blue street sign that said the space is for valet parking from 5.30pm. Even though they sat in the window & watched me park, they didn't say anything. When I came out at 5.40pm, the police was already there and the tow truck was on the way! That means they called the cops at 5.30pm sharp. They could have looked for me - I was right next door. I have a lot of friends in Clayton and was told that they do this a lot! read more

On this visit I started with the Italian Burrata and Tomato salad. The burrata was rich and creamy and the tomatoes were perfectly ripe. I next had the Spanish octopus with peas, etc. The octopus had a rich smokiness about it that was exquisite. For my main course I had the Berkshire pork belly. It was fork-tender and melted in my mouth. However, for me, as delicious as everything else was, the fried blueberry pie stole the show. It was a perfect size hand pie with light and flaky dough, served with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato. Decadent! The tasting menu is so well done. You get to sample so many different items and be full at the end without feeling stuffed. I can't hit submit on this review without mentioning the outstanding staff at The Crossing. This is a small, romantic restaurant in the Clayton area. It's sort of in a cool area, that seemed to be very walkable. We opted for the tasting menu, with the wine pairing. Well executed dishes, came out one after another. The menu was protein heavy and if I had a poke, it was that we needed a breather as we got later into the night. The pacing felt a wee bit rushed. To be honest, their website is kind of jank but at least all the important information like the menu and reservations are on the first page. - Complimentary Bread - I really enjoyed their complimentary bread which seemed to be like a cheese and roasted pepper focaccia. Definitely one of the more flavorful complimentary breads I have had although I feel like it was a bit oily. I thought the side triangle was cheese but turned out to just be butter. - Tagliolini - This was actually one of the best pasta dishes I have had in St. Louis as the pasta was very flavorful but not heavy which I'm not sure how they managed to do that. I also really appreciate that all the pasta is handmade in house and you can really taste the difference. The mushroom were a bit too salty though even though it is quite tender. I wasn't able to finish the dish so I asked them to put it into a take out box for me which they gladly did. However, after I came home and opened the box up I saw a hair in the box which was honestly extremely disgusting. Overall, pretty good minus the hair part. Went here Friday night with friends! Made reservations beforehand Bc restaurants are crazy these days! Started with a cucumber martini, which was a little sour for my taste but still good. We did the tasting menu! The good thing about their tasting menu is that you can change things out for anything on the menu. I started with the tuna tartare. Husband and friends got the Buffalo mozzarella salad, and the beets. Good portions and flavorful! For the 2nd course I switched out the tasting menu for the Raviolo, husband got the octopus. Both dishes were flavorful and delicious. Main course was the Alaskan halibut, which sadly was my least favorite course but still good. Ended the night with the hazelnut cheesecake, which was over all delicious. Service here was amazing and we felt well taken care of and waited on. They even switched out our used silverware between courses. Parking in Clayton is not always easy and this place offers complementary valet, which is also nice!!! After dining at Louie's on Demun the night before, we were extremely disappointed in The Crossing - mainly the service -it was terrible. Joshua was our server and he was very rude. We were 4 women out to celebrate a girls' trip. Joshua misrepresented the menu and cost. I guess he thought we were stupid. The tagliatelle with mushrooms I ordered was $34 for a small portion or $60 for a large portion. I ordered the large portion. I was billed for $75! I also ordered a tomato salad with goat cheese for $28, but asked if two of us could split it. He said we could. We were each charged $16. When I questioned the salad, he denied that we had asked to split it. When asked about the $75 pasta dish, he told me that morel mushrooms were the most expensive mushrooms in the world- the pasta I ordered did not have morel mushrooms. It was quite the scam. He BEGRUDGINGLY adjusted our bill - he was not happy and he let us know that. We will never be back- Louie's was far batter in food and definitely in service. read more

The food, service, and wine pairings were all wonderful and the portion sizes ensured we could enjoy each course without being stuffed, but satisfied. I had the beet salad, venison ragu, short rib, and strawberry cake. The beet salad was beautifully presented and every dish was flavorful. The strawberry cake was my favorite course, as the cake had a noticeable - but neither overpowering nor artificial - flavor with a substantial yet light texture that wasn't dry or crumbly. The strawberry ice cream was the perfect complement for it though the cake could definitely stand on its own. The standout of our meal, however, is the ahi tuna. It. Was. Remarkable. Seriously the best ahi tuna I've had (and I've eaten it in larger cities, on the coast, and was not expecting my favorite to be here in the Midwest). If it's on the regular menu, I'll come here just to reorder that alone. We enjoyed every bite of our meals with the only miss for us being the shrimp bisque (very strong fish flavor). I booked a reservation for my girlfriend and I to celebrate her birthday. I didn't even remember that I noted it was her birthday in the reservation, but as soon we went through the door and told them our names, she was greeted with a "Happy Birthday!". There also was a Birthday card on our table - I really appreciated this gesture. It really made her feel special. For dinner we each enjoyed the 4 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Each dish was fantastic- I tried dishes I wouldn't normally have, and was delightfully surprised. I had the Tuna Tartare, Octopus, Rainbow Trout & strawberry cheesecake.
