A little hidden gem of a place in Clayton. Hadn't heard of it before, but had a gift certificate, so had to give it a try. Menu is on the smaller side, but that means "what they do; they do well". We both started with a glass of wine (one red and one white). Again, limited options but both were enjoyable. Ambiance was cozy and inviting. Server was knowledgeable and efficient. Clearly several regulars were in that night as both the servers and chefs/cooks interacted in a friendly manner. We both started with Spinach Salads, which were basic, but good. I had the Peppercorn Filet and my wife had the Cajun Shrimp. My steak was great and came with mashed potatoes and green beans. Shrimp dish was not spicy, but had good flavor. Almonds I love you and I've missed you. I forgot about you but now I'm back. The menus on a chalkboard are it because paper menus are for quitters. I got a tuna-crawfish situation! My appetizer was the crawfish in a rich and decadent sauce served over bread. Wow! Then I moved onto the tuna steak that I inhaled because it was simple and perfect and I couldn't stop enjoying. Overpriced, under-staffed, and bland. My wife and I made reservations to celebrate our anniversary. We waited almost 5 minutes at the door to get greeted and sat. There was no acknowledgment or happy wishes on our special day. The flatbread we shared as an appetizer was stiff and the toppings were uneven. Gumbo was tasty as was the chopped salad. My wife's pasta pleaser (chicken in a creamy sauce) was overcooked. I ordered pork tenderloins which were dry and lacked seasoning. Service was unfortunately very spotty. Great place on the near-Westside of St. Louis in downtown Clayton, just off the business district. Set in an older, walk up commercial strip, the restaurant is classy but comfortable from the moment you walk in the door. Our Wednesday dinner was a work function with a variety of people from three organizations and came at the end of 4.5 hour highway commute from Indianapolis for me! But the food and the ambiance refreshed, and set the stage for the invigorating dinner conversation as well! Our service was impeccable and the Trout dish that I had was crispy, light and yet substantial. The snow peas side dish were perfect for the mid-June season and I happened to get extra as my dinner guest was not a fan, so I got extra! We dined at Almonds last night. It was recommended by a family friend. It was delightful experience. It's a relaxed comfortable setting frequented by many long term regular customers. We all started with the Gumbo. Entree choices included the grilled salmon, the tuna steak and the peppercorn beef filet. They all looked great and tasted even better. I wish I took pictures to share. Another lovely dinner at Almond's. Always dependable and enjoyable. The service is always spot on, and the restaurant is a calm and relaxing space itself. Although the menu doesn't vary other than a few daily specials, a pasta, a soup, a pizza and a main. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in St. Louis! I love coming here with my family and friends. Perfect little spot in Clayton and owned by a great couple. My favorite dish is the pan fried chicken or the pork tenderloin, I can always order anything else but one of the many reasons I love Almonds is it is always consistent. The food tastes the same each and every time I go and I know it'll be just as good as the last. Additionally, if you order dessert, try and get the bread putting or ask for a large brandy Alexander! Almonds is one of our favorite restaurants. Family owned and operated, they really care about the service and food. On top of that it is reasonably priced. We came in late at 8:00(we did call ahead) and they certainly accommodated us. I started with a cup of the Gumbo(excellent) and then the Cajun shrimp, which had 8- 10 nice size shrimp. It came with their homemade mashed potatoes. The wife really wanted their crab cakes ( but they were sold out) so she went with a chopped salad and the peppercorn steak. What? How have I not been here? I went here on a mid-week lunch date not knowing anything about this place besides the fact I've walked by it a handful of times. Don't let the white table clothes scare you away, their prices are more than reasonable, the atmosphere is casual and their a foodie destination. Their lunch menu has a wide variety of sandwiches, entre-esque dishes, salads, soups, pizzas and quesadillas. Most of their items are cooked over an open fire visible from the dining room. I stole some bites of my girlfriend's soup of the day. It was a cajun bisque that was unbelievably tasty. It was packed with flavor and not too creamy. For my main dish I went with their Marinated Burger per my waiter's recommendation. It's under $10 and huge. The meat was cooked perfectly. It was the quintessential grilled burger. If you're looking somewhere new to lunch in Clayton then put this spot at the top of your list. read more

So I was just flipping through the reviews of Almonds (notice, Yelp, no apostrophe in the name) and I can't believe anyone would complain about the mashed potatoes or any vegetable that Tony cooks as a side. I have dined there for dinner many times and LOVE the mashed potatoes. I can never make them at home that delicious! At various times, Tony has made green beans or snow peas as the vegetable which were also delicious. The consistency of the food is the reason I keep coming back. There are many restaurants that I quit going to because they changed the menu and got rid of my favorite item. Please don't listen to the haters!! I have to say that I was excited to be going back to Almonds after not going there in over a year. I was craving their pan fried chicken. The food was great as usual. Unfortunately the service was lacking this night though. We had reservations but still had to wait for 45 minutes. Then the waitress was gruff and not pleasant. I hadn't been to Almonds for quite a while and another couple invited us so we went. I ordered the salmon which was served with snow peas and mashed potatoes. I am diabetic so I don't eat carbs. I asked the waitress what I could substitue for the potatoes and she said there was nothing except double vegetables. They only have one vegetable snow peas. They have had the same vegetable snow peas for as long a I can remember years. I like the restaurant and the owners but I think they need to have more than just snow peas and mashed potatoes. So I ordered double vegetables and when we were served I got the same amount of snow peas as everyone else at the table. The salmon tasted good but the tomatos salsa was ice cold and the result was it made the fish cold. Ate a couple of bites and brought the rest home to reheat. read more

Not even a star. We had very high expectations after hearing friends rave about it. The place wasn't too busy for a Saturday but the whole night was just a waiting game for drinks & food. We had to flag down people several times for drinks and the check plus wait to order or run down of menu. We are very patient people and we're very polite about it but at some point it's hard not to share the experience. Aside from the service, the food was sub par...not something to crave...very basic. I would say something that we could make better a home. We could elaborate but we won't. We ended up finishing the night elsewhere which exceeded expectations when we just went there drinks and dessert. Food is always delicious and atmosphere is great except for tonight. This place is small and it was very annoying when a few tables started talking and it got ridiculously loud. It could and should have been handled by the manager or anyone working there. We suggest when that happens again that restaurant has some say so as to take extremely loud people just standing in the aisle of the restaurant smooshing and drinking without any consideration for any others read more

In the 3+ years that I worked in Clayton, never made to Almond's - it always seemed too fancy for my hot dog loving ways. Turns out that this place *is* a tad upscale but nothing that the average pants wearing, wipe your nose with a tissue Joe couldn't handle :) Called ahead the day before to make a reservation (again, was under the impression that they needed to know these things ahead of time) and the table they saved for us was super cool and comfy. Instead of regular dining chairs, we both sat in padded armchairs. Cool! Soup of the day was gumbo, which we had to try due to the impending Mardi Gras celebrations. Spicy and hearty. For lunch, I had the BBQ sandwich, which was a little too heavy on the BBQ sauce for my taste but I'm really picky about how I like my BBQ sammies. It was my bad for not specifying how I wanted it... My dining companion had the cheeseburger and practically had a food orgasm at the table. It was just that good! Dessert was an added bonus - a chocolate lava torte with a side of vanilla ice cream. Yum! I could eat that all day! Our service was exceptional! In a restaurant that has actual linen tablecloths, you always wonder if the staff is going to be snobbish or rude. Not at all! Our server was friendly, funny and attentive, but not "in your face". I would go back just to have him wait on us again. I think the beef filet at Almonds is extremely UNDERRATED in this town. WOW! I have ordered the beef filet twice in a row, and was SUPER amazed at the quality. It is cooked EXACTLY how you like it and it comes with sides all for less than $20! It's a steal for the quality, taste, AND location of the restaurant (Downtown Clayton). I took an out of town guest here recently, and he agreed that the filet was outstanding. My favorite places in STL to get steak would be Citizen Kanes and Annie Gunn's. Almond's is very close to the quality of the filets at these places, but at a WAY cheaper price. My personal opinion: Morton's down the street in Clayton is WAY overrated and overpriced. It's good - but not nearly as good as the above three. Give this one a try. I have had other entrees at Almond's and they were good, but it's the filet that stood out and made me want to write this review in the first place. I like this restaurant. I like the family that owns it. I like the location. We frequent them quite often but...... Tony....you need to shake it up. The menus tired, the mashed potatoes have gone the distance and you have to have cornered the market on snap peas. It's time for a change. You spend the money on white tablecloths and your silverware is that right weight in feel. You have nice stemware. You, repeat you, do the cooking. It's time to stand back, take a bow for all of your hard work, but realize, change needs to happen. Get rid of your scoop of potatoes and shake it up a little. Buy a new inspired cookbook. Throw out the snap peas. Think young. Think fresh. Think current. Change. What was isn't. What worked doesn't. You have a really nice family business and you work your butt off, but the last year or so it's been tired. The tarragon sauce is soup. The pork tenderloins dry. On and on. We're in your court. We want you to succeed. But, I'm standing on the side lines for now and spend my money elsewhere for a while because I feel taken advantage of. I can do what you do at home. There is only one other review of this restaurant so far, and for the record, I will have to agree to disagree with the author. I am a huge fan. I spent two birthdays here (both mine) and thoroughly enjoyed each experience. I also went on non-birthday occasions, and would make many more reservations here if I still lived anywhere near the area. Every dish is perfectly cooked here, but if you don't like southern food, this is not your place. Originally from Nashville, I revel in southern-based dishes. And what a place to revel! I ordered to die for pork chops here one evening. They were succulent and perfectly seasoned, which is hard to do considering I have had a plethora of dry pork chop dishes. I would recommend making reservations here, otherwise you might be in for a wait during busy times. Also, make sure you reserve a good block of time for your experience. Staff are wonderful and appropriately attentive, but may be on "southern time," which is often much slower paced and relaxed than most people are used to. There are so many other places to eat lunch so I will not bother to go back to Almonds. The acoustics were horrible. It was so noisy that my lunch partner and I could hardly carry on a conversation without shouting. I ordered the crawfish tail salad. The beautiful crawfish on baby lettuce were covered with melted shredded mozzarella cheese which totally ruined the taste. The chef should omit the Mozzarella - it isn't needed. In fact, the crawfish and cheese turned out to be a melted blob on my fork. Despite the cajun spice and salad dressing, the salad needed something else to make it tasty. I tried salt and pepper but it didn't work. The waitress was not easy to find for coffee refills. She did ask once but only after we'd had the coffee for a few minutes. Boyfriend's grandparents took us here before the symphony last week. They had been several times before, but we never had. The atmosphere is very pleasant and cozy and definitely on the intimate/romantic side. I was a little thrown by the simple chalkboard menu on the table but OK. Our server also explained it to us - everything basically comes with the same side, and there is a soup, risotto, and pasta special. I got the tomato-spinach-parmasean soup of the day to start. Boyfriend got their chop salad which was really good - kind of different with the right amount of crunch! I got the salmon, and the side was mashed potato with string beans which was rrrreeeaalllyyy good! Love mashed potatoes. BF got the tuna, and both grandparents got scallops.
