Wright's Tavern is Clayton's neighborhood upscale seafood and steakhouse: a small dining room, an intimate bar, good luck trying to get a reservation before 10pm. For those of us who eat at 5 and are in bed by 8, that's a non-starter. So for a birthday dinner we did the thing you're not supposed to do, showed up on a whim at 5 p.m. on a Thursday with no reservation, fully prepared to be turned away. All four bar seats were open. We took two. Sometimes the shot goes in. The room is modern chic with an old-school soul, green-and-white striped plates, the footprint is small, the kitchen is open, and the staff are polished and professional without being stiff. Jose, the bartender, has been behind that bar for most of the time the restaurant's been open, and he was the best kind of host, warm, unhurried, and honest. Yes, walk-ins are possible. No, don't count on it; some nights there's a line out the door of people hoping to squeeze in. Get there early and pray, or plan on a late supper. The Old Fashioned was solid, served over a mound of crushed ice with a fat orange wedge, which is not how I usually take one, but it went down easy. The crab cake, though, won the night, among the best I've ever had, on par with our favorite Chicago steakhouse...Bavette's. Thick, honest pieces of crab (not filler pretending to be crab), a perfectly crisp golden crust, a scatter of chives, sitting in a buttery sauce you'll want to chase with bread. Order it. Share it only if you must, even though I'm about to tell you to share everything else. Confession, I don't like spending money on pricey salads. Moreover, I don't like blue cheese. And yet the wedge, which they graciously split into two plates for us, turned me into a living contradiction. I'd order it with enthusiasm. Don't look for me to bring that spirit to any other restaurant, this is an exception, not a new rule for me. Crisp iceberg, blue cheese crumbles, a crunchy crumb topping, and a pool of herby vinaigrette underneath. Then there's the bacon: not bits, a full thick-cut slab draped over the top like a trophy. Bacon GOLD. It deserves its own line on the menu...Wright's Tavern, follow Bavette's lead and put the bacon on the menu, we'll all thank you for it. Now the steak. We went with the 22 oz. New York strip, and for what you're paying at a place like this, I expected the main event to be the main event. It arrives pre-sliced, showered in chives, sitting in its own jus. Beautiful plate. The flavor was spot on, no complaints there. The problem was the cutting. I don't know whether it was the cut itself, whether it got pre-sliced with the grain instead of against it, whether it didn't rest long enough, or whether the steak knife just wasn't up to the job, but I was sawing our medium-rare steak. More pressure than I'm used to, the knife catching on the fat, and by the end I'd left a small graveyard of partial segments and rubbery fat on the plate. Maybe it was just a bad cut on a good night. It happens. But at a steakhouse, the steak is the franchise player, and the franchise player had an off game. The side, though, quietly stole some of the steak's minutes. I'd never had dauphinoise potatoes, so I had to try them: paper-thin sliced potatoes baked au gratin until the top goes golden and the middle turns creamy. Excellent. And here's my free consulting for the kitchen: crumble some of that wedge-salad bacon over the top as bits and you've got a stellar side. You already have the bacon. Just walk it across the kitchen. Dessert brought it back. The apple cinnamon cheesecake is really light, none of that giant, dense brick that's the calling card of many cheesecakes, topped with soft spiced apple slices and a streusel crumble, and it was excellent. The scorecard: crab cake and cheesecake were the spotlight, the salad and the potatoes were the surprise, and the entrée was, oddly, the letdown. If Wright's Tavern were a TV character: it's Don Draper. Stay with me. Handsome, clearly talented, a real man's man and a ladies' man, magnetic in a small dark room with a drink in hand and flawed in a few key places. Everything Don touches at the office is brilliant; it's the thing that should matter most in his life (being a father, husband, good business partner) that he can't quite get right. That was our steak. I'm giving Wright's Tavern some grace here, because everything else was so well delivered and this little nook of a restaurant has "future regular" written all over it. I'm coming back for another steak, and I'm expecting redemption. Until then: 4.5 out of 5. The only thing keeping this from a perfect score is the one dish that's supposed to carry the team. read more

After hearing about it for ages, finally made it to Wright's Tavern! Yes, reservations are annoying, but if you stay up until midnight before the first of the month and have multiple days and times in mind, it should be doable. The restaurant felt very upscale - service was extremely attentive and fantastic. We ordered the following and did a lot of sharing: shrimp cocktail, crab cake, Caesar salad, halibut, French dip, and steak frites. Everything was fantastic. My personal favorite was the crab cake - I've never gotten so much crab meat in one before and the sauce was incredible! Caesar salad was good too. The steak to fry ratio on the steak frites was a bit off (steak was fairly small) but I appreciated that they don't skimp on sides at all! The French dip was the most meat I've ever had in one. 3.5 stars. After my last visit, I'm torn. The food we had that night was mediocre with the best dish being the Caesar salad with anchovies. My filet au poivre and my husband's French dip were forgettable at best. My steak was overcooked (ordered medium rare and came out close to medium well). With such a lean cut of meat, the overcooking of it ruined it. The Au poivre sauce which likely had cognac needed to be cooked off as it was extremely bitey (and salty). There was no peppery flavor at all. My cocktail, on the other hand, was delicious and well made (old fashioned) and our server was efficient, helpful, and timely. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere. I've had the crab cake before so I didn't get it this time, and it's as good as people say. It is huge and can be shared with at LEAST two people. It's perfect for a girls' night, date night, or just treating yourself. Our server was AMAZING and handled our table so seamlessly, which made the experience even better. Recommend. Steak was amazing. So tender. Reservations can be hard to come by. There are four seats at the bar. Go early and wait in line if you want to ensure you get first dibs on the bar seats. On the Saturday I went, there were four people waiting prior to opening. The bartender and entire staff was great, respectful, polite, attentive. The bread and butter was so good. The butter had olive oil and spices with it. One of the best bread dishes I had. The crab cake was large and full of crab. Very flavorful. The Caesar salad was fresh and tasty. Not overdressed and each element well put together. The filet was amazing. Soooooo tender and seasoned well. The sauce was ok, I like having sauce but the taste was just ok for me. The steak was great, perfectly cooked and didn't need any sauce. The fries were good. The onion rings were very good. These are large sides. I wanted to try dessert but was full. Today we shared the Tavern Onion Rings and Crab-cake for starters. Full portion of freshly battered Rings with an Aioli dipping sauce and ketchup. The Crab-Cake was generous with Fresh Maryland Blue Crab served atop a special Remoulade sauce (slightly salty today). I actually enjoyed the Aioli dip sauce more with the Crab cake. And the Rings made a good shareable. Next time I'd like to try some Oysters or Shrimp Cocktail. For dinner, we ordered the Scallops Special entree, Steak Frites, an extra Crabcake and the French Dip Sandwich. Each dish was thoroughly enjoyed and tasty! And I can honestly say this was one of the BEST French Dip Roast Beef sandwiches I've ever eaten; generous portion, tender beef, havarti cheese on a warmly baked sesame roll with Au jus and creamy horseradish sauce ... oh and the fresh pommes frites fantastic too - YUM! Went on a Wednesday night and it was packed--definitely make a reservation. You might get lucky with a seat at the bar, but I wouldn't count on it. They really use every bit of space, so it feels a little tight, and the noise level is higher than you'd expect for a high-end spot. The service was excellent--attentive, polished, and detail-oriented. They kept our bottle chilled on ice and refilled glasses right on time. Still, the overall ambiance didn't quite match that level of refinement. The space feels packed and a bit loud, so while the staff delivers fine-dining service, the setting leans more energetic and bustling than elegant. Cocktails were great and well-made. I started with the shrimp cocktail--good, fresh, but nothing to rave about. The Caesar salad was solid, and as you'd expect at a place like this, anchovies are an option--though our server didn't seem aware of that at first. I had the much-talked-about burger; cooked perfectly to temperature and you could taste the quality of the meat, but it leaned a bit dry overall--maybe could use a touch of sauce for balance. Fries were excellent, crispy, and disappeared quickly from the table. For dessert, we shared the sundae, which the server said was "big enough to share." That was an understatement--you could easily split it among six people. Generous ice cream, plenty of toppings, and a fun way to end the meal. For the good, we got shrimp cocktail, which were big and done well. We also got a Caesar and a wedge salad. Wedge was super interesting and delicious with a perfectly cooked slice of bacon on top. Reserve it through Resy, keep your eyes open. But it is definitely worth it. It's a hidden little spot. When you are walking down, Wydown, you will miss it if you blink! And keep in mind it is street parking only. So on the weekends and busy dinner times... Allow extra time to find a spot. Everything on the menu is better than the next. Service is impeccable. I've been wanting to try Wright's Tavern for a long time. I snagged a reservation and I was delighted! First of all SERVICE. It's tip top for StL. Priscilla (proper spelling) was our server and she was perfect. She gave us time but not too much time and answered all of our questions without seeming like we bothered her by asking. She was so knowledgeable about every topic in which we inquired. She was so so so good. Super kind and very attentive. Her assistants for the evening didn't let us get our water glasses very empty until they were refilled. The hostess was at her station when we arrived with a kind smile and sweet greeting. Every single person we encountered was so ready to serve and help. My hubs dropped a knife, he had a new one within 10 seconds, same with his napkin. AMBIANCE: simple, sweet and charming in the most delightful way. Good pencils and paper covering on the table to doodle and sketch and play games if you'd like. Perfect lighting. Perfectly quaint. Great first date night place or special occasion or just a delightful Tuesday night dinner. ;) FOOD & DRINK: Wow. Hubby had an Old Fashion and I had a Pink Lady. We both loved them. Hubby gave his OF the highest score he's given and OF anywhere. Sooo good. We had the bread with butter / olive oil and this is just silly but it was insanely amazing. Seriously next level bread and "butter." I would go back just for that. He chose a (medium) burger and fries. I had a (medium rare) filet and dauphinoise potatoes. The filet was like butter, perfectly cooked and amazingly delicious. My hubs couldn't stop talking about his burger so I gave him a bite of my filet and then he couldn't stop talking about my filet. Hahaha We both ate my potatoes and thought there were soooo scrummy but he really loved the aioli that came with his fries. We decided to share the wedding cake for dessert at Priscilla's recommendation and it did not disappoint. My hubs originally said he wanted it more dense and I disagreed because it was the most light and airy cake I've ever eaten. After a couple bites, he agreed he wouldn't change anything about it because it was so so so good. He ordered me a little 10 year port to finish off (my fav) and it was perfect. PERSONAL PREFERENCES: The bathroom! It was clean. The light was on a dimmer () which was nice and there is a optional fan switch. The towels are linen-like meaning you can use one and get your hands entirely dry which is less waste and more sanitary. All said, we couldn't have hoped for a better experience. We went to Wright's to celebrate my husbands birthday as it his one of his favorite places. Not a lot needs to be said on here as far as a review goes because once you walk in, everything speaks for itself. The staff is wonderful, knowledgeable with pairing drinks, wines with your foods as well as a great job describing specials. We have been there several times and have probably ordered everything on the menu. You really can't go wrong! Presentation, preparation and taste of the food is always superb! This is the kind of place Clayton needs, it's friendly, neighborly and you can tell the owner knew exactly how to run a well established restaurant. Normally I go into more details about the food, but anything you order, you can't go wrong and it's always going to be top notch! Even if you are wanting to maybe spend a little less, the Tavern Burger and the French Dip are well executed, full of flavor and again, you can't go wrong! If you blink, you'll miss it, which makes stepping inside the warm, upscale atmosphere part of the experience. The ambience enhances your meal. It's such a small detail, but I love how after entering the restaurant, you walk slightly up to enter the dining room. The perched, limited seating, the dim lighting, and the exposed oyster bar make it feel an intimate, cozy NYC-style dinner. On the tables, each covered with white paper, sits a cup of freshly sharpened pencils. I wish I didn't have to limit myself the both times I've gone, but the Martini & The Car, Wright's Caesar Salad, the Steak Frites or Filet Mignon Au Poivre, and the Tavern Hot Fudge Sundae. If half stars were an option, this would be a solid 4.5. The atmosphere is great, and sitting at the bar made the experience even better--the bartender was outstanding and provided excellent service. We started with the avocado salad, which was nicely presented and a bit different, though not especially memorable. The crab cake appetizer stood out with great flavor and a generous portion. I also ordered the crusted halibut, which looked beautiful and tasted very good, though it could have used a touch more seasoning. Definitely worth trying at least once. We heard great things about this place and we were excited we finally got a reservation. We arrived on time, were seated promptly and greeted by our server. We treated ourselves one cocktail and one mocktail, the crab cake, Cesar salad, NY strip special (grass fed) along with pomme frites. Service was ok - warm in a performative way. The drinks were watered down. I've never had a watered down mocktail before. The steak and pomme frites were warm, not hot. To clarify, the plate was hot, the food was not. Not worth the price of the special. Were the staff distracted by all of the social media photos/ videos being taken? Maybe? It was distracting and took focus away from the whole experience. Wright's tavern was **chefs kiss. Waited a bit to get a reservation due to small dining area but was so worth the wait. Chris, our server was so friendly and fun. We got the specials at the time - scallops for an appetizer and the 20oz NY strip rare+ with the green beans. I have NO notes. It was all to die for. Will be back. read more

Need to update again because Wright's Tavern simply does not miss. There is something about that french dip. It has me in a chokehold. I can't help but order it every time. And, every time it gets better--which I did not think was possible. Everybody knows the food at Wright's is great. The macaroni, onion rings, burger, steak, shrimp scampi. Basically, every single menu item. So, I do not want to Belabor that point. I do, however, want to indulge you in the magic that Wright's is beyond their food. Wright's, for me, feels like home. The meticulousness is magnificent. The art work is elegant, yet accessible. The paper and pencils on the tables makes it feel just a bit whimsical, while still feeling elegant. Yet, you feel welcome no matter your background, outfit, status, etc. it just feels like anyone can walk in and be exactly who is supposed to be there. Every server shows genuine interest in serving you. Always willing to chop it up, they are dressed to the nines, but remain beautifully folksy. It's intimate. But, also a place you can take the family. Wright's is an enigma. Artistically balancing upscale with casual, high end with affordable, intimate with friendly, professional with whimsy. Maybe none of this makes sense. I may just be rambling. But, beyond the generous portions of a simplified--yet perfected--traditional steakhouse menu is a cozy space we all can call home, even if just for the evening. St. Louis is blessed to have a spot as special as Wright's. Can't wait to get back for another french dip... hopefully sooner than later! read more

This is truly a hidden gem. Parking is easy and the building is small and unassuming. All the food is delicious and the cocktails are well-made. I was surprised to even see giardiniera on the menu. The waiter was awesome and chatted with us throughout the night. I will definitely be back! read more

It took us over a year to get our reservation. We ended up FINALLY got in on a Monday at 8:30 and it was worth the wait. It IS small, but I think that's what gives it its charm. Our server CK Was knowledgeable, attentive and very personable. The onion rings were amazing and the horseradish aïoli sauce they serve with it is not to be missed. We enjoyed the cocktails the food and had an amazing experience. read more
