I bought and traded a car in at this location. Dealing with Carmax is defintiely a mixed bag. Read lots of reviews and be careful dealing with them. One of the good things is that you can shop online. I knew what I wanted so I shopped for about 3 months on various online sites. Finally found one - a 2021 BMW 330i with 29k miles. Carmax has a set price - no negotiating - take it or leave it. Price was good so I had the car shipped for $200. The bad - they only offered me less than 1/2 KBB for my trade-in. I took it because I didn't want the hassle of selling it myself. You do all this on their website which sucks. For a company who does the transactions online they need to invest more in it. For example, I had to upload my DL, car registration, proof of insurance etc 6 times! Everytime I logged in to check my status it would ask me to upload documents I already uploaded. You also deal with multiple people at different call centers. This wouldn't be so bad if their website worked well, but it doesnt. The real people at the store were all real nice and apologized for all the redundant work. You can take the car for 24 hour test drive which is what I wanted to do. But it required an insurance declaration that nobody told me about, including the website (bad). I could have easily uploaded off my PC but couldn't download it to my phone. So I just went ahead with the purchase. You have a 7 day money back return policy (good) although I've heard it takes a while to get your money back (bad). I took the car to my trusted BMW wrench for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) which I highly recommend. He found no mechanical issues but did find the car had been painted in a couple of areas. The Carmax report showed no accidents so I suspect Carmax took out some dents and painted the car. Despite reviews saying the Maxcare is a good deal, especially on expensive-to-repair BMWs, I passed. I have a good mechanic and dont drive much. The Maxcare contract was 15% of the purchase price for 5 years, which only would pay for itself if a major repair like an engine or tranny. I drove my last BMW for 18 years with no major repairs so I took my chances. So, at the end of the day I'm happy with my purchase. If you want to buy a car from Carmax - BE CAREFUL. Deal with a real person at the store and that might help with the sucky website. And definitely get a PPI. read more

I sold my 2015 Lexus RX 350 car today. I compared quotes online between CarMax and Carvana. CarMax had the higher quote. I was anxious after reading some of the reviews on here about how it could take 2 hrs to sell your car. I made an online appt that said Express. I arrived at 11am and was able to leave by 11:40am with check in hand. The check was the exact number from the online quote. No questions asked during car inspection. Easy peasy! I came to LOOK at cars with my husband. A person named Aria kept lying about the mileage on each car. There was one where he claimed a car was 33k miles but when I started the car, it was 73k. He also followed me EVERYWHERE, didn't really let me take the time to look around. He then pressured me to buy a car , along with the other coworker (I forgot his name.) It was super hot and I was telling him that my 4 month old BABY is overheating and we need to leave to go buy my baby a fan across the street. He didn't care. He kept negotiating prices and following us . My baby has health problems already. I repeated it 5/6 times that he is OVERHEATING. AND THEN, he said "no your baby is fine." Car was brought out promptly and super well maintained. We ended up getting warranty for the car and had an issue with the battery but they got us a repair quickly in our city so we don't have to drive an hour away. Got an offer online for my car. I stopped by, scanned the barcode and activated my offer. They inspected my car. Everything checked out. They honored the offered price. I agreed to proceed with the sell. I still owed some money on the Loan so Carmax called them up and sorted everything out. The whole process took about an hour. I signed some paperworks agreeing to the prices and everything. They gave me my check and I was on my way. Very nice group of people working here. My business is in Pleasanton and I have purchased 4 trucks from the Pleasanton CarMax. I have had issues with 2 trucks but the last purchase was the worst experience I have ever had. I paid $42,000 for a 2024 F150 with only 3,000 miles on it. CarMax said the truck was in great shape and passed all their inspections. I paid to have it shipped down from Reno. After having the truck for one week we found an exhaust leak and took it to Livermore Ford. Livermore Ford found a laundry list of problems and bad history on the truck. The frame was damaged, engine was replaced, along with many other problems. This means that CarMax really didn't check the truck or they lied to me. Thank God we found the problem before the 10 day return policy was up. I will never ever buy another truck from CarMax. They should be held legally responsible for lying about the vehicles they sell. DON'T BUY FROM CARMAX!!!! read more

Bought a 2019 ram 1500 from Carmax Pleasanton. 20 something days after their 90 day warranty was up, the engine completely failed on me. Took it to the shop and was trying to deal with Carmax legal team as we were hoping that they would take care of maybe a portion of the repair cost, but instead they were not wanting to take on anything. Come to find out, it needed to be a whole engine rebuild quoted at $9600. I shop at Carmax because they pride themselves on having quality used vehicles - but let me tell you , you're better off purchasing from a private seller to avoid everything that comes with purchasing a vehicle from a dealership. Car max...because the agents are hourly/salary paid and not by commision, dont expect to get that pushy customer service because they are a haggle free company. The car buying process was really straight to the point, you like it, get pre approved, accept the terms and sign. We were working out a few financial aspects and SEAN was very patient with us answering my thousand questions, he didnt force us to buy their service warranty like others stated but he did give us the pro's of it. This place sucks. I got an appraisal on my car for trade in and was unable to turn in the car that day. They told me the offer was good for 7 days and I called bc I could not get back there to turn in the car until 8 days (12 hours) later and I went through the trouble to call them and was assured there would be no problem over the phone since I had put less than 100 miles on the car no accidents nothing. When I got there they said they had to reappraise the car bc it was 12 hours past 7 days well the new appraisal was $1000 less with no reason stated. They could not even print out my old appraisal to see what the differences were. This is a bait and switch. Recently came here because I want to sell my 2006 Honda. Friendly staff and wait times are not long at all. The appraisal and selling process was very straight forward and easy! You bring your car in and they take about an hour to test drive your car and then write up an appraisal offer for you. The offer is good for 7 days. CarMax offered me a very reasonable amount for my car so I went back the next day with my pink slip and registration documents to sell my car. Super smooth and easy process. Within the hour, I received my check and they helped me process the DMV paperwork so I was not liable for the vehicle anymore. We needed to sell one of our vehicles and turned to CarMax website since I saw the commercial a few days prior. Got an online quote and scheduled an appointment for Sunday afternoon. Arrived and checked in to the main area and was told to proceed to the left side. There were two representatives at the help desk with one already assisting someone. Oscar and I exchanged eye glances which meant he's available. Greeted him and showed him my printed offer letter. He informed me to get my phone and scan the qr code to do the check-in which I complied. Gathered my items and said he will be with us shortly. We checked the vehicles on the lot, hung out at the kid's corner and finally settled down in the main waiting area. The whole transaction took about an hour and some change to complete. Smooth transaction and only know about the selling you vehicle aspect of it. Buying/trading your ride could be a little different. Sounds like a headache right? Wrong! Miguel at the Pleasanton location was nothing short of AMAZING! He thoroughly explained everything that was happening. When we got there, we were given to a sales rep -Injila Fakiri. She was completely uninterested in our business. Asked no questions about our trade in car besides the bare minimum to generate a lowball quote. We asked to go look at the other car we had our sights set on and she told us to go ahead and go find it. We got to the end of the car lot and realized it wasn't open so we had to go back and ask her to come open it. Zero interest in selling us on the car and she had no knowledge of anything beyond what was available online. Ultimately, the appraisal was lower than a week prior and she couldn't speak to why. We also asked about financing options and she told us whatever was online was probably right. We left and will be taking our business literally anywhere else. read more

Our first stop to car shop. We were invited to browse the lot, no pressure. So ... adventure here we come in the searing heat...we were told if we found something come back in and someone would help us. There were many names posted for appointments on the board. Fast forward to the car lot. We searched about 2 rows and the heat was intense. We were almost going to turn around to the main sales office when we spotted a white volkswagon then a yellow fiat. Took photos on our phone of the info posted on the car side window and the license plates. Once inside we were assigned to a sales person. After 2 test drives and deciding on financing, credit check and Carmax Care servicing figures, a downpayment check was written. Car was sent down to be cleaned and presented with a huge ribbon prop for photos, keys given then away we drove with the "new" car by 9:24 p.m. Returned the next morning at 10 am opening for an appointment to get an appraisal done as we had arrived in a rental car, left that there overnite and brought Rattles in, said goodbye to her for her years of service crosscountry and numerous road trips to various National Parks. The greeter, finance person that closed us out last night and Rocky who we met this morning were very smiley and made what usually is a stressful experience, a virtually painless one. Had a car shipped to my local store. I asked for a 24 hour test drive and was told no. I told them that this model year is missing significant features like a 360 camera and it also had some rattles in the sunroof and hatch and some other things and that I would like to try it out in the real world to see if those features were a dealbreaker. They flat out said they were not authorizing it and gave no reason why. They said that I should just buy the car and return it within 30 days if I don't like it. THIS IS DURING A PROMOTION WITH DUNKIN WHERE THEY ARE ADVERTISING THEIR 24 HOUR TEST DRIVES. I have bought and sold vehicles since 1969 (good year). I have sold them privately and bought them from dealers. I find, selling vehicles privately invites haggles, unwanted buyers, and unsure deals. Selling vehicles through CarMax saves a lot of time and hassles. Surfed through KBB, CarMax, etc, I've decided on CarMax. Although I have an appointment with them, it still took about 2 hours for the transaction to complete. The people are great but the process is slow, probable contacting a third party for reports (DMV?). I would probably use CarMax again with my other vehicle which my daughter doesn't use. read more

After you get your appraisal, they require a 1-mile "test drive" before you can officially sell your car. They handle all of the paperwork--all you have to do is sign! Gisel walked us through the process and made it as stress-free as possible! I also felt very safe here in terms of COVID--all staff members were wearing masks, hand sanitizer was readily available, social distancing markings/signage everywhere...they even have individually wrapped pens for signing the paperwork! My review is for selling my 2000 Ford Expedition to CarMax today. I'd already purchased a new vehicle through a private seller and through COVID I'd had enough private sales and dealing with the DMV (still waiting on title and vehicle transfers after 2 months - huge hassle). I knew CarMax would take care of the DMV from research, though I wasn't aware until today they have their own certified DMV staff onsite which is awesome! This DMV transaction will probably go through before my other two from Aug and Sept. I wasn't sure what to expect except a month ago I'd looked online and they were offering online appraisals so I knew they would offer around $1200. If I were to sell privately I would have listed for $2K and settled for $1700, so the $1200 without hassle would be fine by me during these crazy COVID times. When I went back online I saw they were doing appointments only at this tine for appraisals so I scheduled 2 days ago, went in today 10 min before my 1 PM appt time. The gentleman that greeted me explained the process, to wait in my car, and an appraiser would be out. He went through approximate times for the entire process and stated it would be about 45 min total as the appraiser would send his findings back and then he would be out to review the offer. I wish I paid better attention to names. The gentleman that did the appraisal was kind, patient and though wearing a mask, had a warm feeling of a smile. It was a pleasure to interact with him. About 15 min later, the first fellow I spoke with returned with my appraisal of $1000. It was about as I expected and just wanted to get this task done so I could stop paying insurance on an extra vehicle and avoid dealing with Craigslist, private sellers and mostly, the DMV! He had me drive my truck to the service bay for a test drive and leave my ID, title and registration at a desk inside. I was then asked to wait out front while they took it for a test drive. About 5 min after I dropped all documents off I saw them drive out with my truck. That was fast! It did take about 15-20 minutes once I saw them return from the test drive before anyone came to find me. Everything else was so fast and smooth I actually worried for moment they were going to change the offer. However, that wasn't the case, they had to scan my ID and get documents in order for me to sign.. well now, that doesn't seem that long after all. I had another gentleman help me with the final paperwork. No sales, no hidden agenda, just a great explanation of everything I was signing. He also asked if I had FastTrak, "yes", and that I should remove my vehicle from that. I took care of that task while he handled the DMV papers. He then reminded me to cancel my insurance, which I did on my Uber Ride home. I did ask about a Lyft ride home as I'd heard they did that. However, he explained with COVID they stopped that and apologized they didn't have that available. However, this was the easiest car transaction I've had to deal with from start to end, including appraisal was just over 90 minutes. All COVID guidelines were covered, I didn't encounter anyone that seemed to be having a bad day. It seems the employees here enjoy their job, perhaps because it's all "no-haggle". It was explained to me the cars on the lot are no older than 5 years old and others are auctioned on Wednesday - that's where my old faithful will find it's new home. Glad to have that out of the way so I can get back to waiting on hold, writing letters and sending endless emails to the DMV for my new trailer and truck purchases through private sellers... CarMax is the way to go if you want a fair price on your old vehicle (figure about $700 less than you'd get in a private sale - WORTH it!) and it appeared to be very low pressure on those looking to buy as well. Make an appointment for your appraisal and if you make one for a new car purchase you get your own priority parking space while you shop. read more

I found a car I liked and was told it went thru a thorough pre-inspection but when I test drove the car it had multiple malfunction lights on that I imagine would have been discovered during said thorough inspection? I was told it was most likely a simple fix, and a month later, still waiting for the *simple fix* to be remedied. Updates from them are few and far between and when I ask a question about what's wrong with the car, no response. The car I want has a mark of 30% compared to other options out there. Initially I thought ok maybe if I have a great experience, transparency, and ease it may be worth it? But after this last month of dealing with them it feels to me like CarMax is more of a wolf in sheep's clothing, pretending to not be your typical dealership experience but on par with them. I wouldn't recommend them. And if you do decide to purchase a car from there or anyone for that matter, make sure to get your own pre inspection purchase done. read more
