We had to return a different day because we forgot some paperwork and now that we drove all the way back, they're changing it up. Not professional at all. I went to CarMax after having a car accident. The car I was looking for was not in Modesto, so they told me I had to pay the transfer fee, which was $199. I did the transaction on a Sunday. They told me I was going to receive notifications. I received a text when the car was picked up from the location, and after that, I didn't hear from them. I kept calling them, and they told me the car was in Modesto and that they were inspecting it, and I had to wait another week. If I wanted to know the status, I had to call them. Otherwise, they would not contact me when my son went to see what was going on. He saw the car in the lot, and the car was horrible. The interior was torn out. The pictures they posted were not from the vehicle--they used other car pictures. Prior of us paying the transfer fee we asked about the pictures because it look so nice and clean and they had other car same make that had the same pictures. They use picture they had from similar models so people get excited. If you are in Modesto, go to Roberts Auto sales instead. I went in yesterday 1/24/16 and was thinking of buying a prius. The kind salesman Dan showed me the 2 prius they had on the lot. But unfortunately one of them had a dead battery and was unable to start. And the other one had a messed up screen for the temp control along with the arm rest that was damaged. This raised a big red flag for me. Since CarMax always advertises that they fully inspect all the vehicles prior to selling or putting them on the lot. I also feel like the cars were very over priced compared to Toyota dealership for the same car that is in a better condition with less miles. Took it to Carmax last Friday to fix it and your employees were awful to my husband as if we were bothering them. We received my car back with what looked like a scratch on the back bumper. We were told to come back Monday to fix the scratch. We came back and more hell happened. THEN the service engine message came on again days later. Just spent ALL DAY there. Drove all the way from the Santa Cruz Mountains specifically to get a particular car that we were very excited about. The car was overpriced. I knew that going in. I was able to take it to get it inspected by another mechanic before purchase (good). But when the mechanic pointed out about $600 worth of repairs that needed to be made, I got the runaround from CarMax about it. Then we came to purchasing my car. I knew CarMax doesn't pay top dollar. I know low trade-in value for my vehicle is about $7000. So imagine how I felt when the written offer came back at $4500. But, my plan was to drive away in a new car, so I agreed. To recap so far: I'm getting screwed coming and going. Then we get to the signing room, and I've signed the agreement to purchase the car. Now we turn to the purchase of my vehicle (which I already have misgivings about, but I came alone and can't tow the new car). Turns out due to a very minor technicality regarding the title, they decide they can't buy the vehicle. REALLY!? We've gotten all the way to this point and NOW you decide you can't buy the car you've already screwed me on?! Okay, there are two cars here and one of me. I can't tow the new one home. So which one stays? The clerk looks at me and says with a smirk, "Whichever one you decide has to, sir." I'm sorry to admit this was not my most Christian moment. I lost it right there in the signing room. I mean, come on. The car I'm buying is overpriced, I've agreed to practically GIVE you the car I'm selling you, and NOW you decide you don't even WANT it? When I was in the market for a car, carmax had the car i needed for a somewhat reasonable price. It was everything I wanted, a black 06 subaru wrx. I was in the market for about 3 months and I was very ready to buy. The first day actually went well. I made the drive from San Jose to Modesto with traffic which was 2 hours but I didnt mind. The sales reps were preoccupied talking about last nights party but I didnt mind because someone eventually helped me. His name was Sam, I guess he was a nice guy. We test drove the car, did some paper work, check my credit, but we cant finalize the deal because it was around 9 o clock and the banks have been closed. No big deal I guess? Sam the man and his "boss" tell me that they feel sorry for me and that they will hold the car for me until tomorrow. So I make the trip back home and make the mistake that all car buyers should never make. I fell in love with the car. I was confident with my credit and I have been waiting very long for a the specific model that I wanted. The next morning, I call Sam to check my credit before I get there. He calls me back a couple of hours later and apologizes to me that the car has been sold by another sales rep. WHAT THE? He tries to make everything better by telling me hes going to find an identical car, hes going to give me a great deal, hes going to meet me half way with the delivery expenses (what?), and that he could lose his job because of this mistake (oh really now???). I lose faith in Sam so I call Carmax and ask to speak to their "boss" and apparently, he doesn't give a damn about me either. He wasn't the guy that promised me that he would hold me the car because to my understanding, they have more than one bosses at Carmax. Great way to run a business and a great way to diffuse responsibilities. I stay on the phone to attempt to get a complete understanding of why this happened and the boss #2 did his best job explaining to me. He first calls me a dumbass, tells me I need to shut my mouth by putting a penis in it, then he starts disrespecting my mom. Lost cause. I understood the situation very well. I am not surprised if someone gave them a better deal. I understand money talks. Sure a few hundred dollars sounds nice, but its a small price to pay to build your business. This also goes against their "no-haggle price" rule. You know, the rule that states you cant get the car for any cheaper then the sticker but you could pay more to get it? I don't know. CarMax - This is how I got my car!!!! Dog food in center console. - Used Car Dealers Near Me - Modesto, California

Where can I start this nightmare??? First, I had the funds to purchase the vehicle I ALWAYS wanted, BRAND NEW, CASH MONEY... I found the vehicle listed online at CarMax in Huston Tx. After about a dozen calls and three days of dealing with that dealership to get pictures of the described vehicle with no luck, I asked for someone to go out and describe the vehicle to me, I got two hang-ups from them. I guess they were to busy for a $40,000.00 cash sale. I finally asked for the GM and DEMANDED the for him to go out to the vehicle and describe it to me since they were "TO BUSY" to post the pictures. I liked the vehicle so paid the $599.00 to have it transferred to California. I was told it would take 28 days, FIRM. I said that was fine, for the funds for the sale were also 28 days out. It arrived 14 days early and I was treated like I was lying about the funds and was asked for PROOF that the funds were soon to be available. I showed the deposit receipt for almost $94,000.00 and the funds would be available in 5 days. I was asked to give a check and it would be held for the five days and then deposited for the sale of the vehicle. THEY LIED..... The check was deposited the SAME DAY... and it BOUNCED TO THE MOON and completely RUINED my vacations because my account was in a multi-thousand dollar NEGATIVE amount... PLUS the day I did pick the vehicle up it looked like SHIT, I asked for it to be detailed and it was nothing more than rinsed off and not even vacuumed out. I was then apologized to PROFUSLY and PROMISED it would never happen again and CarMax, I was then asked to provide a cashiers check for the amount since the check bounced (CarMax's fault). I went to my bank and acquired the cashiers check as requested. In the infinite wisdom of CarMax, they REDEPOSITED the check when I had ALREADY taken the funds out in a cashiers check... SO, this check has now bounced for a second time... My checking account, for the second time, is now over $50,000.00 over drawn and checks are bouncing all over the place. I spent several hours on the phone and at my banks ATM doing damage repair for what CarMax had done to my account and had to re- deposit the cashiers check to keep other checks from bouncing, namely checks written to my daughter that they, employed by other banks, had any holds waived. Had these checkes bounced they would have lost their jobs due to CarMax's stupidity. CarMax Modesto PROMISES they will reimburse me ALL expenses... BUT what I am saying WHAT ABOUT THE INCONVIENENCE AND THE DEFIMATION OF CHARACTURE AND THE REPEATED TRIPS TO MY BANK AND THE "HOURS" SPENT ON THE PHONE WITH MY BANK AND CARMAX FOR THEIR SCEW-UPS? PLUS, WHAT IF MY DAUGHTERS HAD LOST THEIR JOBS BECAUSE OF THIS? Total tally: Pictures of the truck... three days Arriving 14 days early and demanding proof of the money... This carmax gave me and my boyfriend a terrible experience as first time buyers. My boyfriend was interested in a vehicle that was at another location and needed fo be transferred for a small fee except it was obvious there was a dent in the back of the car and I requested an inspection at the location it was at (palm desert) while at the Modesto one. I call an hour later just to be told that the person inspecting the car decided they wanted to purchase it! Fixed that situation myself and ordered the vehicle since the Modesto location said they would fix the the back damaged bumper since they didn't want to deal with the other carmax. I pay the $249 wait two weeks and wasn't told that it would take an additional 24-72 hours for "inspection" and I wasn't called that the car even got there. 72 hours pass I call and see what's taking so long since it's passed 72 hours and they say they need additional time because the cars CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON and they needed to fix the vehicle! I ask for the info on what was wrong with the car and they don't tell me anything except "the check engine light was on when it arrived but we drove it and it turned off so it's fine". Ridiculous!! Obviously we don't want the damn car anymore it was a $30,000+ vehicle why would we take that chance if the check engine light was coming on and off?! So now at this point they ran my boyfriends credit 3 times for this car, I got in an argument with another carmax branch over a car I had placed on hold, didnt disclose this information to us about the check engine light (I called and found out MYSELF), and the wait for THREE weeks was all for nothing!!! The only thing I got back was my shipping and they appraised my car honoring the offer and adding an additional $200 to it but that doesn't fix anything. I have no idea what the experience is for buying a car, however our experience for selling our car here was horrible. They tell you they based it on market research and use the wholesale price. However they can't show you that price they base it on. It is basically whatever the computer spits out for your car. They will always give you much much less than KBB or any other resource the common public has access to. Our car was valued at around 10K with KBB and other NADA sites. However they offered us 6K, which is a slap in the face. The paint, interior, engine was in ideal condition. They found no problems with it. I even installed a new set of tires just to drive it here. They don't care and it is not factored in their "market" value. Do yourself a favor unless you are willing to take at least 3K off the KBB price don't go here to sell your car, better off taking your chances at ANY other dealership or even craigslist. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! their price for your car is not worth the time and effort you put into it. read more

Sales people and inventory are nice. They don't do much of an inspection on their cars though. I bought a truck and the refrigerant was low so I had no a/c and my tires were not balanced. Both were things that would have been easily caught if they did an actual inspection of the truck. The extended warranty I was told covered everything but that turns out not to be so true. My exhaust manifold cracked and the warranty I bought did not cover it. read more

I had a wonderful experience five years ago when I bought my Lexus RX SUV here. So when I totaled my Lexus RX SUV this year I had a very easy seamless time purchasing my car and getting preapproved online with CarMax. I was over the top happy with the sales portion of this transaction. But when it came to making the necessary repairs to my new car via the 30 day warranty that Car Max had offered, it wasn't so easy. It took the service department eight days before they started working on my car and when no one contacted me regarding the status of my car I kind of flipped out and started working with corporate. But Sierra at the corporate office made everything happen and Steven the service manager followed through and made sure everything got done within the next two days. Bottom line Car Max came through for me in the end and they redeemed their name. I would recommend anybody to buy a car here from Carmax and to take advantage of the 30 day warranty that they offer. All of the employees have always been very nice. I just wish the repairs got fixed a little sooner and I wish the communication between Car Max service department was better. I finally got the service department to fix my car. It took many months and a personal letter to the manager. The service department sent my car to the dealership to try out new tires to see if this would fix the alignment issue. It did. Camax replaced all 4 tires on my car. I am happy with the outcome but wish the company would have been more on top of it. If you buy a car here, make sure you get the service needed on the car and hold them to it. As for buying the car, the sales department was great. I would definately go back to buy a car here. They said go to the local Ford dealer order manual and they would pay me for it. When book came in I fax invoice to them. It cost $70.00. No response in over a month! They quick to sell you vehicle, no one called me after sale, That was 2 months ago.Im very happy with truck.My advice to anyone buying from them is to check for owners manual ,because your on your own after sale! I had an outstanding experience selling my car to Carmax. The process was quick, with no games or misinformation. I think the wide disparity of reviews here stems from people not having an objective appraisal of the market for their particular vehicle. I sold a 2012 Infiniti coupe which was in pristine condition with low miles. I decided to use Carmax after considering the following options: (1) private party ads; (2) Autotrader Trade-In Marketplace; and (3) dealer quotes. I decided against selling the car myself because the car wasn't paid off and I did not expect a buyer to provide me the payoff funds and wait for the title to arrive from my bank in the interim. Moreover, I didn't want to spend my weekends fielding phone calls and setting up test drives. Before visiting Carmax, I reviewed their site and noticed that they did not have any similar vehicles to mine on the west coast. With this in mind, I felt confident about the offer I would receive. I appraised my car using Edmunds.com which is more accurate than KBB. I arrived at the location at 9:30 am on a Saturday and was immediately greeted in a professional manner. The associate escorted me to their lounge while my car was appraised. That process took about 40 minutes. Once the car was appraised, I was given a no-obligation seven day offer. The offer was only slightly less than the maximum value I could hope to obtain by selling it myself. I accepted the offer and after completing all the paperwork left around 10:45. My bank received the payoff check that Thursday. Please keep this in mind if you are considering using Carmax: My car was relatively rare in their inventory so the market value was high = great offer. If you are selling a 5 year old Kia with high miles and Carmax has 20 of them on the lot, you are not going to get a great deal!!! By the way, avoid the Autotrader trade-in marketplace at all costs. We had a great experience here! My husband and I have been shopping around for about a month going to many different dealerships. We came to carmax worked with a girl named Vanessa. We told her we were just there to browse around since we were not in a rush to purchase anything that day, She took our info and was not to persistent. When we left she gave us her card and let us know if we needed any help to call her and if she was not working she would call and have someone waiting to help us. The other dealerships we went to the salesmans would call and before I could get off work they called my husband or called me again and that was annoying. Before bringing your car to sell at this location be aware of the following: (1) If your car has higher mileage, regardless of its condition, you will likely get an offer for a fraction of its value. In my case, CarMax determined that my car was in good condition, but because it had about 90,000 miles on it, I received an offer to buy it for less than 1/3 of the private party value and less than 1/2 of the trade in value. The appraiser and sales agent said that it is CarMax's policy to sell all cars at auction that have more than 90,000 miles, and so they offer you a lot less for your car. In other Yelp CarMax California reviews people have been told that this policy kicks in at 100,000 miles. (2) Be cautious about any representations made by CarMax about giving your car to charity. My car is worth less than $5,000, and the CarMax appraiser explained, at length, why I should not donate my car to a charity. He told me that charities would prefer that I sell my car to CarMax and give the charity the money instead of giving the charity the car directly. Also, he told me that I would get a small tax write off for the car, because the IRS had changed its rules and now permits you to write off only 50% of the amount the charity sells your car for. So, again, he told me that I would be better off just selling my car to CarMax. Unbelievable service while purchasing a (used) car! The other day our O SO IMPORTANT commuter car died, it was a hard day for everyone in the family. We needed to get it replaced and fast!! It was the end of the day around 7, so I started making attempts to reach out to all car lots/ dealerships. I live in Patterson so I called from Tracy-Modesto. Most of the dealerships really wanted to just put me off until the morning. When time is of the essence that can be annoying to say the least. Finally like a ray of sunshine Shannon @ Carmax picked up my call. She was incredibly friendly and instantly started to calm me down and help me find a vehicle. She was able to run my information over the phone, and give me a basic idea of the amount of $$ I would need to spend, also instructions for how to handle insurance and etc. We came down the next day frazzled from stress, we instantly went to 1/2 cars we had discussed, test drove it. Found it to be beautifully cleaned up and shined, great tires and everything it appeared to be on the website. However the check engine light came on during our test drive and our helpful sales associate Nick pointed it out. It also had a rough idle. When we got back from our test drive he said he would have their maintenance shop look into it. We were still sold on this car and went forward with the buying process. Our insurance company that proved to be incompetent and ridged made my buying experience beyond stressful, their rules and expectations-poor customer service had me on and off my cell phone over and over again. Yet everyone at Carmax remained in good spirits, helpful and friendly. As we finalized the sale, Cynthia had to make the hard announcement, the car we just bought was too mechanically broken to be sold, the engine was broken and not up to Carmax's standards so they could not send us away in that vehicle. I was distraught. They told us they would do everything they could to see that we still drove away that night and that they would make this right and get us into a vehicle we love. After a ton of time shifting things around, Cynthia, Shannon, Nick, Jill and the rest of the team sent us home in a temporary vehicle until our other 1st choice arrived from their Roseville location. The team at Carmax made us feel cared for, in a world where strangers are not obligated to care for each other. Their amazing customer service felt genuine and not driven by money. Our 2 sales consultants Shannon and Nick went above and beyond and text us all the next day about our car and when it would arrive. When it did finally show up of course my insurance company gave us more and more problems. Yet some how like a great team Carmax helped us every step of the way. Even driving my husband to load money on our credit card repeatedly when our insurance kept requesting more money. Jill really saved the day for us, making hard executive decisions to do what she thought was right and see that we got into a great vehicle. Cynthia was the one who was forced to deliver bad news and deal with me during my melt down, she was impressive and strong while still caring about me and my family. I should also mention during this whole ordeal, I have a 3 years old. The whole Carmax crew was patient and kind to him every step of the way and by day 3 my son thought they were friends of the family! I appreciate the great customer service, I have financed cars in the past and have always had a bed to average experience. We are delighted with our new car and all the great people at Carmax. Wow!!! That's what my husband said after we purchased our car. It was the fastest, no hassle purchase we have ever made buying a car. I held a car online (I was unsure of how this would go) they called me to make an appointment to see the vehicle. We did pre-approval over the phone. We went there that day, test drove the car, loved it, and bought it on the spot!! We were in and out in less than an hour. My husband was shocked on how fast everything went.
