Modesto Carmax....is HORRIBLE! Do not ever go there. I'm not one to bash a place on social media, but this CarMax is bad! I got a car form there and the alarm kept sounding off. I took it backf after only having it three days and they were going to keep it for about three months before they could get to it. I was like ok, then are you going to pay my car payment for those months? I'm not paying for a car I can't drive and only had for 3 days! So after arguing, they took the car in and allegedly "fixed" it. But of course as soon as I got it home, the alarm went off again. I thought maybe it had to do with the remote to unlock the doors, so I tried to use my key in the door instead of using my remote to unlock it, and the key DID NOT FIT!! It was not the key to my car! So, I asked if they just picked a key out of a basket and programmed it without making sure it fit the door of the car! I was within the time to return the car, so I did that and got another one. Now, within three weeks of having that car, but long enough for the return policy to have lapsed, pieces are falling off my car, literally. Of course they are not covered under the warranty I bought from CarMax and was told it is a better warranty than a normal warranty because it will replace any part. That is not true. So, I took my car to the dealership, and they helped me. I don't want to name the make of my cars because it is not their fault that the cars were not in good shape. It is CarMax Modesto's fault!! She and I have been texting back and forth for the past month looking for the right car that would suite my needs. My Story 100% True: First of all let me state that I have bad credit and I TOLD the salespeople there if they could work with me or not to not waste my time or their time. 01-12-15 went in looked at cars, ran my credit, appraised my car for trade in. 01-13-15 paid to have car I chose shipped from Torrance Ca. took almost a week till it was barely going to be shown to me...Fine I understand I wasn't at the front of the line even as multiple sales people assured me it was on the shipping manifest. Stopped by multiple times since I never got a straight answer...Cool that's on me. Get bad news around the 18th that it didn't pass inspection...No problem things happen....Then on the 19th I find out it got dinged in transport will have to be sent to body shop and that it will need a bracket...Took a week to get the bracket Okkkkaay? By now it's the 26th get told that it's finally going to happen on the 27th...Yay! Take a day off work to go see, drive and buy the thing...Oh it didn't pass another inspection point. Finally on FEBRUARY the 4th I can see it TAKE ANOTHER DAY OFF WORK...Been promised that the wait was going to be worth it and how they would make it up to me yadda yadda...The car's interior was garbage...Only 38k miles and it was faded, leather shot, dirty on the inside, nicked, possible cigarette marks and scuffed...The outside was fine but the inside...Noooo. Look at the dude since he said it was "Great Condition!" They had brought another car which was perfect...I said I'll take that one even though it's about $3500 more...We get to the signing and finance and their system won't let competing companies give me finance and they can't lower the interest even though I'm coming with $7,000 down. I figured get your blood money even though haven't had ONE late payment on anything in FIVE years but drop the percentage based on the ridiculous wait, the promises made. They looked lost...Walked out sadder but wiser...DO NOT SHOP AT CARMAX. Went to Steven's Creek BMW that day and they'll get me what I want at HALF what CarMax was trying to gauge me with. The employees here seem more interested in talking to each other then helping customers. Watched one put a customer on the phone on hold for over 5 minutes to talk to a coworker who walked up to have a personal conversation. The other was on her cell. Everyone else is just standing around talking. Maybe just maybe if they did their job instead of talking it would get in and out faster. They low balled me on KBB by over 4,000. I looked they are selling an exact same car for 32,988 and wanted to offer me 22,700 so you want to make $10,000 profit off my car?! Give me a fair offer you will still make profit but don't try to rip me off and slap me in the face with an offer when you clearly can afford to pay KBB and make an excellent profit. Carmax is cool on many levels. Prices are competitive, inventory is huge, and finding what you want can be done. My only issue was in the rotation of sales reps, which made it seem impossible to find someone who was really willing to stick with me through the process. I had to follow up with the first guy. The 2nd never reached after I finished a test drive. Luckily the 3rd time was a charm. Josh was happy to find out what I needed and he found exactly what worked for me and my budget. When he wasn't available he arranged Andrew to work with me and my family. Both guys were very kind, respectful, and lighthearted. Great experience all around. Purchasing our car was easy and Stan was extremely helpful. All the staff was very personable and made the process as painless as possible. Even when I needed to return to sign a document that was missed, they were able to just scan it to me so I didn't have to make the drive back to the office. Additionally, we had to bring the truck in for service as there were some issues noticed before we drove off the lot. Thanks to the 30 day Carmax warranty, we are getting all of the issues taken care of. The service staff is extremely helpful and kind. We received a loaner car in the meantime and have been getting calls daily to update us on the status of the vehicle. They even took the time to let us know that they aren't in on Sat-Sun but that they'd call Monday with another update. Car Max is garbage. For a town that has so many dealerships in it, you would think they would do better. We bought a 2014 impala from them 4 months ago. During the sale the sales staff "accidentally" wrote down the wrong amount for our payoff. They reassured us that we wouldn't have to make another payment to our previous dealership. Then we got a call a couple days later stating we needed to bring in more money that our initial down payment because the payoff on the paperwork was wrong. Once arriving and speaking to the office manager, she made the $150 oversight like it wasn't a big deal, but did state they never get anything from writing when dealing with a pay off. How hard in day and age would that be, to get an email stating the correct amount to prevent errors? The women clearly didn't care, but wanted me to go away, so she offered a few gift certificates to oil changes (which, by the way needs an appointment 30 days in advance to redeem). Two months go by and our new impala overheats. We take it to a dealership and find out the thermostat has gone bad... already? Four months go by and the alternator goes bad. We take the car in, because we purchased a warranty, and it will take over a week to fix our car. So is this a common issue, since they are so backed up? To top everything off we forgot something in our car. We returned to find the car unmoved after a week, and the staff can't find our keys. Anywhere. After 20 min of searching, and several comments on how the staff doesn't know where "she" (the intake person) put the keys... awesome. Needless to say, we didn't get our items and nobody knows where our keys are... I would never ever recommend this company, who comes off professional at the beginning, continues to do business. read more

My wife came in the door with everything that they asked for check stubs and bank statements but they treated her like a criminal. She had copies of her check stubs and then they would not except them. So, they told her to print out her check stubs and bank statement from the computer inside the CarMax store. They would only take the copies after the CarMax employees Watched her print the paperwork out. They were all the same papers I guess at Carmax they look down upon you if your credit score isn't high enough. read more

Amanda worked tirelessly to help us select the vehicle we wanted and then secure financing. When there was a snag in the paperwork because of a recent address change, Jessica was called in to help! Jessica was able to communicate with the lender and explain the address change so the financing would be approved. Then when Amanda had to leave work she had Melanie take over helping us. I have been looking at Carmax for a while as I was in the market for a newer 4x4 quad cab truck. On the day before Thanksgiving (11-23-16) I found a Dodge Ram located in Idaho that had everything I wanted. I called the Carmax in Modesto and spoke to a sales rep named Jaime Cook. I told her that I wanted to have the vehicle shipped to Modesto and she informed me that the price for doing that (and it was also stated on the website) was $399. I gave her my credit card information, and she told me that it would take approximately two weeks for the truck to get to Modesto. I was stoked! On the afternoon of 12-4-16 (a week and a half after ordering the truck) I had not gotten any emails as to the truck being shipped or anything else. I called Carmax and spoke to Jaime Cook again. She stated that "Oh, I was just going to call you" (I'm always wary when someone says that). Jaime went on to say that the truck had arrived at the Modesto Carmax on the 1st, and that it took ten days to get an emissions sticker. I asked if I could come down and drive the truck and she stated that it could not be driven until they obtained this sticker. Now I have known people that have brought vehicles from out of state that have never had this emissions sticker hoop to jump through other than normal smog testing at a smog shop. I was working with a dealership so I gave the benefit of a doubt that maybe they had extra hoops to jump through. I then asked Jaime if I could call back around the 9th or 10th and see if it was ready and she said yes. On 12-6-16 I got an email stating my truck had shipped. My thought was "I know it has, its sitting in Modesto" and didn't think anything else about it. On 12-9-16 at about 10am, I called the dealership and again and I spoke to Jaime. Upon speaking with her and asking if the truck was ready, she went and looked in some records and said "it looks like the truck will be ready on the 8th, so we'll shoot for that date". I said "well it's the 9th, so can I come get it"? There was a pause and she asked if she could call me back in a few minutes, to which I said yes. By about 3pm, I still had not gotten a call back from Jaime, so I was pretty much done with her. I called and asked to speak to a sales manager and I talked to Russell Larson. I explained why I was calling him and why I was not the happiest. He listened and said that he did not know why I was told that the truck was there at the Modesto store, as his records didn't show that the truck left Idaho until the 6th (when I got the shipping email). He added that he didn't understand why I was told about the ten day smog certificate as they have their own smog machine on site although it takes time for the vehicle to be inspected, weighed, etc. I told him that I did not want to deal with Jaime Cook anymore, and he replied that he would be my point of contact until it came to signing for the truck and then he would assign me another sales rep. Around 12-14-16, Mr. Larson called me to tell me that the truck was ready, so I made an appointment for the 17th at 1pm. Upon arriving on the 17th, I was met by Mr. Larson who introduced me Sales Rep Clara Isho. Clara was great and took me a test drive in the truck. When done, I was ready to buy it! I talked again with Mr. Larson and told him that I didn't know what had occurred with Jaime Cook but I didn't want any of the commission from this sale to go to her, to go ahead and give it all to Clara Isho. He explained that Jaime had been looking at a different truck in the records (but there is still the fact that the truck didn't ship for a week and a half). Anyway, I asked Mr. Mr. Larson because of this if I could get a rebate on some of the shipping cost. He stated that that he would speak to the managers and let me know. I picked up the truck and have been happy since with it. On 12-29-16, I hadn't heard anything from Carmax, so I called. Mr. Larson was not there, but I spoke to Ms. Arno, another Sales Manager. She was very nice and told me that Mr. Larson had spoken to her about the incident and that she would see to my getting a full refund of the $399 and that I would get it back in a couple of days. I was very pleased. Overall, I'm pleased with my Carmax experience. I'm not sure what happened with Ms. Cook (it may have been that it was the holidays, that I just happened to be the customer that fell through the cracks or whatever) but I was happy with the follow up treatment my Mr. Larson, Ms. Isho and Ms. Arno. This is the second vehicle that I have bought at Carmax and I'm sure I will look there again. read more

This is for the service department. Took my Ford Focus Titanium Hatchback in for a rattle that started about 45 days after purchase. Went for a drive with a technician, he said it may be a heat shield. So left my car there to hopefully get it in soon than the August 5th appointment they had for me, this was July 17th in the late morning. Well after numerous phone calls of haven't been able to get to it yet, I finally on July 28th called to speak to a General Manager. Well it must have worked because on July 29th they finally can see it!! They found the rattle and sent it to Heritage Ford because it was still under factory warranty. On July 30th finally get the car back needed a clutch replaced. Thank you Hertitage Ford for fixing it in one day, after Car Max couldn't even look at it for 11 days. Terrible Service Department.
