My husband and I were interested in a vehicle, 2008 Toyota Yaris, stock #18867571. We were in direct contact with an associate named Tahlia. We received emails from your company starting June 30th with a "thank you for contacting us" then another on July 3rd, asking "How'd we do?" asking us to take a survey. On July 8th, we received an email with a "Welcome to MyCarMax". My husband had been corresponding through emails and texts at this time. On July 8th we received an email with "We got your shipping request!" on the 2008 Toyota Yaris S In the same email it states that you are working to secure the vehicle for us and to ship it to Scottsdale. We then get an email on July 9th saying "You did it" we are "approved for the 2008 Toyota Yaris! We have not heard back from your company!!!!!! We tried contacting Tahlia through text and email and have not gotten a response. That car was a gift to our daughter who just graduated high school. She is crushed!! We would appreciate a phone call regarding the car you had on hold and are shipping to us!! This is unacceptable!!! I would highly suggest if you are considering buying a car at Carmax you do your research before buying "Worry Free" the extended warranty. My transmission went out on a car I bought there a year and a half ago, I still have a year or 30,000 miles left on my warranty. So no problem right! Wrong!!! It will be a full week tomorrow and my car has yet be worked on and they still have not approved a rental car for me. I have had no car for 6 days! I have a 2-year-old and a full-time job. Kind of tough with no car. Everyone has sure been nice, but I am the one with no car. If I would have known how badly they would try to not fix my car and to also not give me a rental with their "Worry Free" warranty, I would have absolutely gone and bought my car somewhere else. This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a car in my life. I have called multiple times and there is nothing anyone can do. I just need to sit here and wait. Awesome! read more

There seem to be alot of people that swear by this place mainly because of the "no haggle" policy. However, I find that to be their biggest issue. I was looking to trade in an 09 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner TRD and get into another car with a lower payment. I had done my research and found out the amount I could get for trade in which was $2,000.00 more than what I owed still on it. I decided to try CarMax for the fact that it seemed like a one stop shop and that it would be a fairly simple process. The salesman helping me was terrific, however, after the appraisal, I was informed they were going to give me $2,000 less than what I owed. Additionally, they wanted to sell me a used car, year '07, for way more than what it was worth and were going to give me a terrible interest rate (even though my credit is in the 800s). In my eyes, CarMax turned out to be a bad deal and there was no way of negotiating. I was able to go to the Toyota dealership and get what I wanted on my trade in and also picked up a cute Nissan Cube for a really reasonable price and with an awesome interest rate. My advice: Only go to CarMax if you need to get rid of a car quick or if you have bad credit (I have several friends that were able to get a car from CM even though their credit is in the crapper). Otherwise, you can find a better deal elsewhere, haggle or not. read more

A tale of two visits. Saturday: we came in out the heat and was immediately greeted and asked what brought us in and then invited to browse the inventory and if we had any questions s or wanted to take a test drive let him know. After walking around the lot unmolested we came back to being greeted and offered a seat. We test drove two cars both on a extended test drive where we were able to really assess the vehicles and freely discuss the pros and cons of each. When we returned we were once again greeted at the door and where we given a card and thanked for our interest. On the way home we discussed how pleasant the experience was and it is refreshing to not be treated like a used car lot. Sunday: After our experience the day before and looking further on the Carmax app, we decided to pay another visit and look into to a couple more cars. Upon entering we were pounced on by a different salesperson. When we asked about the salesperson from before we were told that he wasn't working today and that he would be our salesperson. Rather than getting invited to browse the lot we were followed out and lead to vehicles. When grilled into what we wanted I was taken to a truck and head keys to start it but told "Don't go anywhere, that is my job". I started the truck under the careful eye of our new Carmax warden and was told the features. The next truck that we went to was spotted by my wife and it was like pulling teeth to get him to even walk over. I was not offered to even start it and after an eye roll we decided to move on. As we were walking over to the next vehicle I was interrogated as to what my numbers are, when I confessed I was told that I couldn't afford the past two anyway and "I just like to be honest to my customers". We liked the third car and requested a test drive. When we mentioned the extended test drive we were met with a face similar to a toddler tasting a lemon for the first time and "Ya, I don't like those extended drives so I will be coming with you". We were taken off lot and informed of the "rules" of the test drive. After short drive and some interesting discussion on super cars we came back. Shortly before arriving back at Carmax our honored guest performed his most egregious error, he was dismissive to a comment made by my wife. I can't even tell you what she said, but the reaction of "um hum" and the mocking tone were enough to ensure I will never purchase a vehicle from him. There were some high pressure sales tactics at the end; things along the line of the vehicle probably will be gone before I can get my down payment together and that I'll never find a better deal. But the sale had already gone the way of the dodo. We have looked at Carmax before for other car purchases but this is the first time it has felt like visited a used car lot. In short, I gave you 4 stars. 5 stars for Saturday, 1 star for Sunday; but bumping it up to 4 for the excellent app and past experience. Purchased a car that had defective window tint. I brought it to the attention of a sales manager Steve and he said they would pay to remove it as a gesture of good faith. Really? It is so defective that one woukd need glasses to correct the vision to see through it. To me this should have been replaced. Now fast forward to getting it removed. Rob the services manager had me drop off my car the night before so I could get this done same day. It is now 3:30 and they still havr not taken it to the third-party to get this done. So it will not be until tomorrow. So another day trying to manage family life without a car. Thanks Carmax. read more

Why sell your car to Carmax? Because it is Fast, easy and reliable. I was ordering a difficult to find car from an out of state because the local dealers insisted on ripping me off. The general attitude on my trade from several local dealers was 13 - 15,500. That was after haggleing for a good deal. Of course none of them would buy the car if I didn't buy a new car from them. I figured I would try Carmax because if I could sell my car quickly at a fair price to them I could buy via internet and fly to CA to pick up a car and drive it home for much less money. The Carmax selling process is great. 30 minutes after I arrived I had an offer of $15,000. More would have been better but after negotiating with 6 different dealerships I knew it was in the ballpark. Since I didn't expect it to be so easy I hadn't arranged for a ride home so I couldn't sell the car that day. I returned 2 days later with their printed quote in hand and 24 minutes later (I timed it) I had a bank draft for the difference between my payoff and the $15K. They are reported as being one of the best companies in the US to work for and it shows in the attitude of their staff. Everyone seemed to care about what they do. I left a couple of things in the car by accident and when I called, they were very gracious about finding them and helping me get them back. I'm sure I could have gotten a few extra dollars selling the car on the street but who needs the hassle. read more

When he noticed how confused I was about what kind of cars to look at he asked me specific questions, listened to my requests and started showing me some great looking luxury/sporty cars. I was really impressed with his knowledge and that he could find the cars on that huge lot! When we sat down to do the numbers, it was painless and quick - everything on the computer and no haggling. Pricing was competitive but when it comes to financing Carmax needs to change their strategy. When they ran my credit for the Hyundai Sante Fe I was given one APR that was a lot lower than when I ran my credit for a similar vehicle, Ford Explorer. The store Manager wouldn't even make a call to try and adjust the rate down to a similar percentage that I was going to be charged for the Sante Fe. I mean why on earth does a Ford Explorer which is a direct competitor to the Hyundai Sante Fe carry such a high risk profile. If I was Ford I wouldn't be a happy camper. The sales rep Autumn was nice but she told me "Yeah, my Manager said she's not going to make the call, sorry." I was in a take or leave it situation and given no other financing alternatives besides a Carmax loan. I feel like Carmax forces their financing on customers with exorbitantly high rates compared to their competitors. I ended up buying a Ford Explorer on Vroom for a better price and 3 percentage points less than Carmax APR because Vroom shops rates and doesn't force their white label bank financing on unsuspecting customers. Shame on you Carmax. This experience changed the way I look at your brand.... I'm far less trusting and will be apprehensive to buy from you in the future. read more

Visited two locations on Saturday - Carmax in Gilbert and a local Chrysler dealer. I was on the hunt for a Chrysler Town & Country. I knew year, make, model. I submitted a reservation for an appointment, Mike Stone called me and talked me through the process, arrived at my appointment and the car was holding for me. I viewed the car, decided that I needed to send my husband for a look, and Mike gave me a buyer's invoice with the total price. They put a sold tag on the vehicle and waited 4 hours for my husband to come view the car. In that time, I also stopped by a local Chrysler dealer. oh my goodness - what a dreadful process. In the end, they could not (or would not) beat (or match) the Carmax price for a car with more miles. That was a complete waste of time. I went back to Carmax, told Mike Stone that I wanted to buy the car. They worked with us to hold the car until we had our financing worked out through Desert Schools - all without us signing anything. We did not sign a thing or put down a deposit. I was very impressed with Carmax in Gilbert. This is our second vehicle with them. Mike Stone was amazing. Please ask for him when you visit Carmax Gilbert. read more

These guys used to be really good. However I've since bought two cars from them with major issues - one with a bad diff (that they repaired), airbags (that they won't repair), a trashed battery (they said was fine, and I had to replace nearly everything near it because it exploded), and a bad headlight, and one car they even said "shouldn't have been sold, because it didn't meet their standards" (mismatched misworn drive tires), no wiper fluid at *all*, low oil. We returned that one. The last time I had them change my oil, they didn't even fill it to the 'add' line. I'm done with them. I've had it. I will never go back, period. Their so-called warranty? How can I trust them to honor it when I can't even trust them to change the oil. My teenage son can change the oil. read more

My family has purchased here twice, now. Enormous selection but also killer warranties available to put your mind at ease with buying a used car. Just helped our son get a car he needs for work study in California at 2.9% financing and for less than $2k threw on a bumper to bumper warranty that will add another 110k miles with no deductible for repairs at Carmax or $50 if can't get to one. Includes rental coverage and towing. And zero haggling or sales pressure. What more can you ask for from a used car experience? And it IS a USED CAR experience. Most of the negative reviews here seem to forget that. These guys will add warranties the manufacturers will not. They wouldn't offer them on cars they don't think are reliable, but these are used cars so get one and put our mind at ease. Also, all car dealer trade in scenarios undervalue your existing car compared to selling privately. That margin is how the dealer makes money. If you want that margin for yourself you're gonna have to give up the convenience of the trade-in and sell it yourself. read more

My immediate family has sold 3 cars to this location and my mom just bought from them. We dealt with Brandon Rinker who has been extremely patient with our indecisive minds. Their appraisals take only about 20-25 minutes and they go through in detail why they priced it that way because of dents, features, and marks on the title. He wanted to make sure we got the best car for us because they are paid by car, not amount commission here, takes a lot of pressure away from having to buy more than you need or a luxury car that's too much. Please if you value your money do not buy a car here. Their so call inspection of cars to give you the best quality is just words. Bought a car and three months later it needs 2900.00 worth of repairs and that's after them doing a repair for which I had to take it back twice to get it done right. They will probably say "well its a used car you should have bought the warranty for another 5000.00". If that's the case then don't advertise that you inspect your cars and get nothing but the best quality and fix them to get them up to par because in my case you did not. Needless to say I may not have any recourse but I will file a complaint with the attorney general. So for all of you out there reading this, don't say I didn't warn you. read more
