The sales rep helped us at their Gilbert lot, Marcin Pietryka, was completely awesome. He was knowledgeable, professional and willing to let us drive whatever we wanted and was in constant contact in order to help us find the car we wanted. Unfortunately we could not find the model with the options we wanted in the allotted time frame, but I did end up selling my used car to them and it was painless and quick. After that, we went to a traditional, crappy, grind you down dealership and had the exact opposite experience, but that'll be a different review shortly. Carmax Sales Manager I just bought my first car. Naturally, I was pretty excited and hoping for a good car buying experience and finding the perfect car for me. I had the good fortune to work with Bernadette. She helped me find exactly what I was looking for. She was pleasant and the ultimate professional. As I tried to find my perfect car, she was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. There were some hiccups in that I had to get a Driver's License 1st, which I thought I could get my car 1st. They said it was going to be another 30-45 minutes so I told them I was leaving and suddenly my deal was completed. The business manager is a smart mouthed kid. Air conditioner did not work , the dent repair was par best. After multiple trips to the shop my AC still does not work !!! I paid 45K for this Jeep !!! Then to top it off they did not pay off my trade in for almost 3 months . Finally got a check back from them and they did not cover my interest !!! Now another place where you can buy a lemon! My daughter is on a second car purchased through them. The only reason she got the second car was because the first she bought fell under the lemon law provisions for return and they STILL tacked on the amount of the first car tot his loan. MY daughter most recent car has 3 tires with plugs in them that go into an ATV tire. Three of the tire had to be replaced because the plug split the steel belt on the tire. I found this out after my daughter picked up a small screw on the Freeway and we went to have the tire fixed. After Discount Tire checked the remained of her tires, we found that only ONE tire was not plugged in this matter and we replaced the rest of her tires. I called Salvatore and was told it is not up to the dealership to replace or to check tires before the car is sold. But they will most certainly sell you an extended warranty!! If you are a woman and you know anything about cars, the service department will call you crazy and claim you are doing something to the car for it to have to come back and be repaired! Stay as far as you can away from CarMax. Shame on CarMax! read more

Have been buying from CarMax for 15 years and never had a bad experience until now. Bought a truck from them and from the 2nd day we had it have been having trouble with it. First there was an oil leak. Then there was rattling in the engine. They advised me they were sending it to Ford to fix, not even allowing me to bring it there myself since it was still under warranty. Which they didn't tell me about. Then it was at Ford for Another 2 weeks while they did who knows what. Got it back just to have the check engine light come on. Problem after problem. Not only problems with the truck and service department but their finance department also made 2 errors in the paperwork. They didn't send in the correct pay off amount for our trade in to Wells Fargo and apparently they charged us too much in fees as they just sent us a letter letting us know the incorrectly charged us. Don't go here. It's a nightmare now. Too bad CarMax has gone down so much. Guess I'll try Carvana next time. read more

We got a Porsche Macan transferred from LA. Took them 2 weeks, 100 $ non refundable. Finally we went to the dealership and after about 2 hrs drove the car. Granted we didn't make an appointment they couldn't help us promptly. The Porsche at 40k $ had a left frnt bent wheel, Hood was repainted, looked like my 14 year old did it. Rear view mirror fell off, car was dirty and had sticky substance in cubbies. We were told the car has already been detailed. NOT! Rt vent was also broken. The female sales person was very nice but not empowered at all. All these issues but price is still not negotiable. Got to finance, algorithms said 10.5 % interest with CarMax financial, there own in house monopoly. I asked to send the contract to other banks for better terms. After all I make 100k, never late, credit score high but they don't do business that way. The things that were absent at this place are: Customer service, promptness, sales skills, ambition to help, ambition to close the deal, leadership. We had no trade and cash down. Manager never came out to talk with us even after we request him (Dave). CarMax has a new way of selling cars and I didn't work. I would give zero stars if I could. I didn't use specific names on purpose. It's not the employees fault . This is purely a corporate issue. As a company they failed on all levels. read more

We took my car to CarMax to get an appraisal / offer. The process was simple and took about 30 minutes. At the suggestion of the person helping us, Valerie, we roamed the lot while we waited. This turned out to be really helpful in our search for a new car because CarMax has just about any make / model you could think of. We were able to eliminate car models that we didn't like and find new models that we didn't know we liked. We left with the very reasonable / surprisingly high appraisal (for the purchase of my car by CarMax) and ended up purchasing a new car somewhere else. I came back a few days later to sell my old car (you have one week to keep their appraisal and decide). The process to actually sell the car was quick and painless and again only took about 30 minutes. The person helping me even filed for a refund with the state for the remainder on my registration. I would definitely recommend CarMax as your first stop in both selling your car and looking for new cars. Although we didn't purchase a car from them, I really was impressed with the way they operated their used car sales (Valerie was very helpful and explained the process just in case we decided to buy used). Even if you are not planning on buying from them, they are a wonderful (and super friendly and helpful) starting point. Their appraisals for buying your car from you are straightforward and reasonable (just like the commercials say they are). read more

All I can say is...wow. This is by far one of my best customer experiences ever. I had planned on selling my car and wanted to see what they could offer. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with a smile and handshake from the GM and then given a short informational on the process by a helpful representative. After the short informational, the representative took my keys, gave it to an evaluator, and in less than 15 minutes I had an offer on my car (which was $1,800 higher than what a previous dealership offered). Happy, happy, joy, joy!! The good service didn't stop. I was taken to the business office where the business personnel were friendly, informative, and just as helpful. Because I didn't have a ride, the GM called a local car rental company for me so I could rent a vehicle (now being carless....). Welllll. I found the exact color/interior combo I wanted. There are only a few for sale in the US and the nice lady at the CarMax out here in Irvine made everything easy. The car looked great in the pictures. I flew out to AZ to grab it since I didn't want to wait around for it to be shipped in..10 days later. When I got there...EH.......No. The car had obvious signs of wear and tear. Lots of scratches and such that weren't visible in the photos. One of the trunk logos was missing. The second key wasn't original - they just used a cheap silver metal key. It looked ghetto. Now I know I'm whining about keys but these little things add up. You could've gone to Chevy and got an original key for $5. Order one and go get it cut for crying out loud. They kept saying "Its a 9 year old car of course its going to have wear and tear" DUH! Well if your employees cared about it at all they would touch up the scratches and recondition the car so it doesn't look like its 9 years old. If you can't fix simple little things what else did you just blow off? Are the wheels going to fall off? The first girl that helped me (Caroline) was pleasant but she had to leave.)They stuck me with someone else who could've cared less if I fell off the face of the planet. I voiced my concerns about the wear and tear. She had piss poor answers on my concerns "its a 9 year old car" "its a 9 year old car." COOL STORY. Process was very smooth. I tried price matching with manufacturer specific dealerships and no one could touch their pricing. No pressure or hidden costs. First dealt with Bradley and explained I needed to wait a week for insurance reasons. Was not in when it came time to actually finalize the purchase but had called me a few days prior and let me know he'd have Woody help. Bradley was great but Woody is amazing! I sold my car to CaMax today. I got an online quote before I went to the store. When I arrived at the store I was greeted pleasantly and promptly. The greeter sent me to a nearby desk where a very efficient and helpful associate started the process and quoted me a wait of 30 minutes for the inspection. 25 minutes later my quote was ready and it matched the online quote. I was then told to expect a wait of 30 minutes to finalize the transaction. 31 minutes later I was called back to sign the papers and I walked out with a check 10 minutes later. Total time was about 75 minutes for entire transaction from beginning to end. The process was extremely efficient, all associates were kind and helpful. Facility is clean and attractive. I can't think of a single negative in the entire process. read more

My aunt was offered a great price on her 2016 Chevy Camaro SS and when we got to CarMax, we worked with Dominick. Whole staff was not personable whatsoever, no one asked how we were or even smiled during the transaction. We called to figure out what was needed as this SS was my uncles prized possession, but sadly, he passed two months ago and this was the last melancholy transaction my aunt would have to deal with selling the car for him. She speaks with someone who tells her to get a TOD title and for those who aren't familiar (transfer of death title) before coming in. Well guess WHAT! She gets to finance to sign the vehicle off and is told she can't do it and that she should have left the title as it was. WHAT?!! CarMax is a bunch of bull and this experience was just the biggest WASTE OF TIME. Thanks Dominick for your inability to show empathy or commitment to a customer and to CarMax as a whole. We'll be taking the vehicle to Carvana as we should have in the first place where they don't treat their customers like trash from the get-go and then turn around and tell them they can't make a deal because someone doesn't know how to do their job by providing accurate information. Wish I had the same experience as most here but my experience was horrible. In FACT the sales manager who was completely discriminatory, rude and insulting obviously was out of line. I was told to bring in my bank statement that was 100% verifiable and thinking I was driving away in a new BMW was told by this power struggling female that CarMax does not wish to do business with me at this location or any location nationwide. She would not provide any information and I am still in shock. I spoke to her on the phone after and had her on speakerphone when she states " I have decided carmax does not wish to do any business with you (and again I asked what did I do?). She said call customer service if you have questions" and hung up. I will not be getting a car not from CarMax, and I have retained an attorney to find out what I did. One of the best experiences on a car lot I ever had. I put a truck on hold via their website. I was already working with Bradley prior to doing so on a previous visit a couple days back. Bradley was very communicative and extremely friendly. He even texted me to let me know he would not be able to work with me on my test drive and set up me with another rep there because he knew I was on my way. When I arrived, I was greeted by Rudy. If you find yourself looking for a vehicle at this location, I highly suggest seeing Rudy. He made the entire experience stress free. The test drive was actually fun. He and I chatted about tons of stuff without a single bit of pressure being felt to buy the truck. After the test drive, it was a no brainer I was going to by my truck. From the test drive, building of docs, prepping my truck (wash and full tank of gas), going to the finance department to sign and receiving my keys felt like 10 minutes (it was 1 1/2 hours total, if that). We had an EXTRAORDINARY transaction with Efren C. He made the car buying process painless and smooth. My husband and I were so appreciative that he didn't try to sell us ESP's, but did make sure we knew all the ins/outs of our vehicle. We had a complicated back story with my credit report still showing I owned a car that was totaled out by the insurance company. To rectify the issue, I had to call the insurance company as well as the credit union where the loan was housed. Efren assisted with these tasks as best as he could knowing I had to work during the business day and had a hard time making such calls. So the people that work there are nice enough. But of course they are because they don't want you to get mad at them about the piece of crap car they just sold you. I bought a 2006 Honda Odessey from them and you may think, well the car was old. This is a HONDA and it only had 90,000 miles on it. I got it on a Monday night and by Wed night the engine light was on, so the next morning I turned the car in. They "fixed" it then two days later again the engine light came on. The engine was misfiring. Long story short I had the car in my possession for 7 days. I bought the car 12/15/14 and returned it on 1/15/15. The car was in the service dept at their lot or the Honda dealership down the street for 24 days!!!! They finally said they can't fix it. They didn't know what was wrong with it and Honda didn't know how to fix it. So they said they would take the car back and put me in another car. UMMMM NO! I don't trust your cars and why would I go from a Honda with leather and all the luxuries to a freakin KIA?!?! I'm pretty sure they are going to put a new engine in it and send it to another city and sell it there for more money. These people can't be trusted and their service department although nice is a freakin joke! I will never buy another car there I would rather take the bus if I had to! read more

My son sold his car to them but didn't buy a car from them. The deal was final immediately but they have a deal with Wells Fargo where their checks can't be cashed and can only be deposited. But when you deposit a check over $5k Wells Fargo puts a 3 day hold on it. So basically Car Max has your car and can sell it before you have even been paid for it. This is NOT in the Contract you sign with them and you don't find our until you get to the bank and try to get your money. This is shady! I tried talking to both Wells Fargo and Car Max about it and neither of them will honor the payment for 3 days and you can't get your car back because they may have already sold it. Shady! read more

The online approval was a little hard to have any self control over and I manage to run my credit a lot more than I needed too, lol. However, the people at this location will go above and beyond to help you in any way they can. I worked with sales gentleman named Alex. He was nothing but professional, patient, and never once pressured or me while respecting times id get uneasy or even upset. I shipped a car to Gilbert, and the approval changed due to taxes and fees being adjusted so the car I wanted was no longer an option. The banks tried to up my down payment tremendously after that on all the other vehicles. Jennie/Sarah both called over to the bank and got my og approval back and I left the same day one of the cars I was looking at the week before. I had a great experience recently at the Carmax in Gilbert. It's quite far from where I live in downtown Phoenix, but it ended up being worth it both times we drove down there. The first time I went in was Saturday 4/6. A few days before I had inquired about a Mini Cooper that I found doing a car search online. Keith was quick to respond to me and I made it out there as soon as I could. When we showed up on Saturday, Keith was busy with a customer so Denise took care of us instead, and she was absolutely wonderful. I was able to test drive the Mini Cooper I wanted and test drove another one just to confirm I liked the original (which I did). After that, my trade-in was appraised and it ended up being lower than I had hoped, but there were a lot of factors taken into account. So later on, I got approved for a loan very quickly and just needed to go home to get some documents. I returned on Monday 4/8 to finalize everything. Keith was available to help us that time and he was very professional and really knew what he was talking about. It took a few hours to get everything done, but that's just how this works. As a first-time buyer, it was absolutely amazing to drive away in my new Mini Cooper. It's the perfect car for me and I find any excuse I can to drive it now. My suggestion is this: do your research. I work in an industry where I'm very familiar with car dealerships and how they work, and at Carmax I never once felt like I was being pushed into a sale or being scammed into buying something I didn't need. It was an independent decision, and it was exactly how I'd like every car-buying experience to be in the future. I will without a doubt recommend Carmax to anyone looking for a car. Be really careful here. Finding a car online and coming in to look was easy and no pressure. We reserved a vehicle for a 24 hr test drive. We took the car home and went over it carefully. Their vaunted 100 point inspection had missed a few things. The tires were barely over the limit which was not great but OK, there was stuff spilled on the back seat fold down which was correctable. The worst item was that after some testing, it was clear that the right side of the touch display didn't work at all. It was completely inop anytime a menu item was on the right (lower) side. It was subtle but clearly broken and repeatable. We told our salesperson we were still interested and to hold it and they said they could probably get it fixed in a couple of days (it was a weekend /Holiday.) I figured it was probably an expensive repair and it would take at least a week to get the parts. All OK, we didn't mind waiting. 2 Days later they texted and said "sorry. my manager took it off hold and it has been sold". It was bad enough that they broke their commitment to us. What was worse is that they didn't fix it at all and just sold it to some unsuspecting buyer. For a company that endlessly brags about customer service and selling fully functioning/ tested vehicles, this was just patently dishonest. They knew it was broken and an expensive repair and just ditched us and took advantage of someone who didn't catch it. Caveat Emptor. read more

Horrible!! Wanted to transfer a vehicle from a Texas CarMax so requested it on line, they called me and started the transfer then halfway through the guy says he has to go and will call me back. He never calls back so I have to call them to finish the transfer. Then they sent me payment links twice to pay for the transfer and neither worked so I had to call again to get a usable link. Paid the $753 to transfer the vehicle and it has been over a month and they still haven't sorted out the title. I was going to lose my financing if I didn't have a purchase agreement by 10/8 so called to ask if someone could please follow up on the title issue and they said NO! They wouldn't look into it before it's next scheduled review date on 10/5. Called back again today and was put on hold with the Business Administration office for 45 minutes!!! At this point I've lost my financing and will have to reapply for it and still they don't have the title issue solved but they have by $753 bucks!! In addition to this they sold us a Subaru Outback that was advertised as a V6 that turned out to be a 4 cylinder! Thought that was a fluke because our other purchases here ten years ago were good but now we realize they are total frauds and have the worst customer service ever! Don't go here!!! read more

I was never looking for a used car but as I was on a phone call I told my husband to drive around while I finished the call and this is where I ended up. Unbeknownst to me while we were in the parking lot as I was still on the phone he found my always beloved Mercedes Coupe with only 15,000 miles on it. I'm currently in a high rise with one parking spot per unit and had no intention of buying a car until I get moved. This deal was simply too good to pass up. Having owned numerous Mercedes, always new, I was skeptical but this car was almost new, mileage wise and in excellent condition. I saw what appeared to be a beautiful Toyota Camry with low miles on the website. But the car was located in the West Valley! No worries. Immediately the car was marked sold and within a few days it was transported to the East Valley for free. I went in for a test drive, met Sharayah and the car drove like butter. The paperwork process was smooth and effortless. Purchased a small extended warranty, just in case, but the 125 point inspection seems to have done the trick. Every other dealership I've delt with has let me. Of course it had problems which Carmax took care of some. Others I handled. Second hiccup was regarding my own financing. It was a pain to coordinate but worth it b/c I saved A LOT OF MONEY going through my bank. This is a long-overdue review... I bought my car in April and kept forgetting. Whoops. Situation: I'm self-employed with no pay stubs and only had 1 year of tax returns. I'd been driving a junker with no AC for 2 years, been carless for 2 before that, and gosh dangit, I deserved a nice new car. Most banks, however, thought otherwise since I didn't have any pay stubs, and wouldn't approve me, despite my good credit score. After a month of tearing up rejection letters, I stopped into CarMax on a whim and asked if they could just tell me yes/no in regards to my situation. I didn't want to pick out a car and then get turned down later. Brandon came and got me in about 5 minutes. He listened to the dilemma, pulled up my credit score, and punched in an amount I was willing to spend. 30 seconds later, several approvals popped up. I love that he just turned his monitor around and let me see all of them: the bank, interest rate, estimated payment, and stipulations. (Funnily enough, CarMax got me the best offer, 5% lower than the second best, and it had zero stipulations except insurance proof. Amusing.) Brandon then streamlined the car selection process; I already knew I was into either a Mustang or Camaro. He went through their inventory on the computer, wrote the options down, and off we went. I test drove 3 vehicles, but none were in the colors I wanted. He mentioned they had a black Mustang, but that it was manual. I couldn't drive manual reliably enough to risk screwing up their car, so Brandon drove me around in it. I was sold! The paperwork part was pretty painless, no upselling or slimy stuff snuck into the contract. There is no haggling; the sticker price is what you pay, plus a $400 doc fee. No '4-square' paper, no "let me go see if my manager can give you a deal". The only negative is that the car might be a tiny bit over KBB price, but honestly I think a $500 price difference is worth it to not deal with traditional salesmen. The finance girl was really sweet and so was the manager who stopped by. The whole process was done and I had the keys in about 3 hours. That's amazing. I've put about 10k miles on the car and haven't had any issues (knock on SO MUCH WOOD). Good deals aside, I would go through CarMax again solely for the staff. I can't say enough good things about Brandon. Since I wasn't comfortable driving stick alone, he drove the new car back to Apache Junction for me. I was impressed he was willing to take an hour of time off the sales floor. He was never pushy; he went over extended warranties and when I said no, he went "Okay then" and moved on. He was incredibly patient with my constant teetering between vehicles, and at one point went back online to check the Tolleson location for more options. He was probably around my age too, which made me more comfortable, and it was easy to chat with him. read more

I've never bought a vehicle from CarMax, so I was a little cautious but liked the website and their huge selection. I was trolling for a nice convertible and found one in another state at another CarMax. I submitted an online request to transfer, and Don Foster called me right away to discuss. He had some great suggestions regarding what questions to ask prior to shipping. Got all my answers within an hour and I agreed to pay to transfer. I got an email the next morning saying the car was on the way and 4 days later it arrived! It was just as I had hoped and I was able to come and get it a few hours later. Don kept me updated all along the way and was very helpful and never pushy. I was in and out of there so fast it was amazing! I did buy the extended warranty and I just brought the car to a local dealer for a once-over and they told me that CarMax has the best extended warranty in the industry. They also said the cars that come from CarMax are always in great condition. A great testimonial from a reputable dealer. I'm sold and highly recommend CarMax. This was the worst car buying experience I've ever had. The salesman made a promise and couldn't deliver. Long story short, I was left without a vehicle after I was approved to get the one I was looking at. This is my first review on Yelp, I felt the need to download the app to warn people that even though they say everything is upfront, it's not. Edit in reply to Jennifer: I have received no messages or phone calls from anyone at CarMax since my visit. I spoke to management the day of and they had the same response, that they were unable to backup what the salesman told me was a solid and good to go deal. The representative helping us seemed like an honest easy goin guy, we did the credit app and wanted to trade in our 04 Trailblazer in near perfect condition and 110,000 miles on the od. They were willing to give us $3000.00 as a trade in. We checked KBB and the WORST shape 04 Trailblazer price was over $6000.00 What's really goin on? CarMax. I am so glad there is no haggling at CarMax. Both Ryan and Megan were amazing. The casual approach to selling was much appreciated. They have a large lot and you can walk around and sit in and inspect the vehicles without much interruption. Ryan helped me find the car I had seen online and the purchase was smooth sailing. Ryan was great to work with, friendly, efficient, and a good listener. Two days later I returned the car (they have an awesome 7 day return policy) because it didn't have the range we needed, and while I was browsing, one of Ryan's appointments ran late so he sent Megan over to help. Megan was great too, very kind, knowledgable, and patient. I had already located a vehicle that I really liked, so we test drove it and it was basically a done deal, but she knew from my previous purchase I was looking for an electric or a hybrid and when I mentioned that and asked if she knew of something in my price range her extensive knowledge of electric vehicles and tenacity found our family the car we love, not just like. Everyone I met at this location was super nice, and I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. read more
