CRONUTS! Yes a donut croissant, with raspberry filling, I don't eat sweets often, but this one I went back for twice in one week! Yum!

Carlocks has been in Los osos since I was a kid and the donuts are the donuts that I compared all donuts too! The sold out a few years ago and the donuts were cheap and the workers were not happy and sometimes a bit rude. Then they sold the shop. The new owners turned things around. The donuts have the same great taste as they used to and the staff is very helpful and nice. I'm glad it back. read more

I took my granddaughters into for a treat and bought a lemon cooking for myself. The girls enjoyed their treats of a apple fritter and a cookie with a panda design on it. My only bite of the cookie was delicious until my granddaughter spotted the dead bug. I wasn't taking another bite. Nasty. Car locks has been in Los Osos forever but not under the original ownership. Carlock's bakery is a must visit! We stopped in today on the way back to SF. The bakery is owned by the sweetest family who have preserved the age-old Carlock's recipes while introducing some delicious new goodies (bbq pork baos... YUM!). My favorite item has to be the Hamentashen. Buttery short bread filled with tart raspberry jam. Absolutely delicious with my morning cup. The apple fritters are also a must try. Crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The sweet glaze perfectly balanced by tart apple chunks. Other must tries are the baos (steamed Chinese buns with sweet and salty fillings), fruit turnovers, and the fresh croissants. Carlock's is truly a Los Osos institution. P.S. This is the 3rd time I gave this place a try. The first one was 2 years ago when their bread tastes like they use an old oil or butter. The second time was 2 weeks ago when my husband got me a blueberry scone, it was super dry, super bland and has probably had 2-3 blueberries on it. Today was the third time and will be the last. I got strawberry and creme danish bread and it tasted and smells like its 2-3days old. I had my son try it and he was like , yuck. read more

Go early to be able to get all the goodies you desire- some items sell out quickly. Mouth watering pastries, airy delicious donuts, yummy zucchini walnut bread, fun decorative cookies that kids love, I always stock my mom, who is local but housebound, up on their bran muffins which we individually wrapped and freeze at home- the muffins as well as the zucchini bread freeze well. Carlock's Bakery is simply the best. My daughter and I have a weekly coffee date there; it's hard to choose a pastry because everything is delicious. We have had birthday cakes made there and they were excellent; we especially loved the dark chocolate one with raspberry filling. Their fresh baked breads wonderful, with a wide variety to choose from. We love the breads so much, we're giving some loaves for the holidays this year. This is "the bakery" in Los Osos, nothing fancy, nothing new. What you will find is a genuine American Bakery, one where the owners start at 4 in the morning...ah you can skip the SB drive thru and run in for your commute snack and beverage here. P's favorite is the newly added made to order Milk Tea's lots of flavors to choose. The pastries are made with real butter in the dough, all are made and baked in back. These donuts don't have Captain Crunch on them, no frankfurters in the eclair's. This is the real deal; ya see it, ya buy it, and ya bite it. Wash it down and repeat. Carlock's Bakery made my wedding cake 43 years ago. And, every time I'm in the area I go back. Last month. We scattered my husband's ashes in the ocean nearby and I took my children & grandchildren there for a treat. It was outstanding! I'm glad it's still open. Will be back. read more

I noticed most of the reviewers brag that Carlock's is the best local bakery around. My road trip warrior bragged that Carlocks chocolate croissants are as lovely as the chocolate croissants you eat in the shadows of the Eiffel tower. I think Carlocks is the most incredible bakery I have ever been to with fluffy white cake donuts perfectly decorated with rainbow sprinkles, light flaky buttery croissants, and moist almond crescent cookies dipped in chocolate. Saturday late morning the bakery was packed with locals eating delicate pastry's and donuts while sipping their freshly brewed coffee talking about the local events and a line almost out the door to rival anything at Voodoo Donuts in Portland. read more

These donuts are not the kind you're going to find at the standard donut shop... They are hand made every morning with love! When you cook with love it shows in the look and the taste. The Bakery has been a local icon since 1961 (almost 50 years!)... My personal favorite is the chocolate bar which is thick, doughy, and always perfectly frosted. Without question, THE best local bakery! Creative and delicious treats at low prices. When I asked them to decorate a birthday cake for my dog-adoring daughter, they did an excellent job, loading it up with fat little puppies made of frosting. It was a big hit! My wicked indulgence there is called an "Angel Baby": a shortbread-like cookie at the bottom, then a dollop of raspberry jam on top of the cookie, then a whirl or two of vanilla buttercream frosting over that, dip it in chocolate (!!) and then sprinkle a few walnut pieces over it. Insanely good. They also have savory delights like onion-cheese bread and croissants with swiss cheese, mushrooms and spinach inside. They changed owners recently (winter 2011) and so far, the nice staff and the yummy treats remain as good as ever. read more

Don't get the donuts! They leave them sitting behind the counter on a rack all day out in the open, they look good but by the time you get one it's going stale. The cookies & other sweets are really nothing impressive. They taste okay, if not slightly below average - everything is cheap there, so what do you expect? The young girls working there seem like they are always troubled & are forced to do everything (tall,skinny things) they probably are just disappointed that they work in a cruddy bakery. They make no conversation & make you feel like you're inconveniencing them while you choose what you want. They have no problem chatting with each other I noticed though.. I've been here a handful of times just wanting a quick sweet fix & every time I feel like I just need to get in & out quickly. The silence in there makes you want to rush, and while you're looking at the items you feel like you're being judged by these girls behind the counter. I will not be going there anymore. The prices are cheap & makes you want to get a ton but it's not really worth it in the end. read more

I write this with so much disappointment. When the newest Owners bought this beloved bakery from the last Owners, who bought the bakery directly from Mr. Carlock; I was elated. The people who bought directly from Mr.Carlock, ruined the food, ruined the atmosphere and we started calling it 'HairLock's Bakery & Chinese Food'. It was horrendous! Then they sold the bakery (thank goodness) to the Owner's who are now the current Owners. For the first few months, the Husband/Wife Team baked all the food with skill, flavor and brought back the friendly Customer Service that gave us the good feeling that has always been associated with our local landmark - Carlock's Bakery. However, sadly the last 2 times we went and purchased our usual order of Bierocks, Ham/Cheese Crossiant, Cake donuts and Apple Fritters - the result was horrible. The Bierocks were not the same as they had been previously with these new Owners. Previously the Bierocks were light, butter and a nice light golden brown. The last 2 times, they were heavy, overcooked and the bread dough was not the same recipe. I asked if the bad Owners had come back I was so upset. As for the donuts, yesterday a very rude young woman, sold us 2 over cooked, over glazed with some kind of thick glaze donuts and the Apple Fritter was very small, overcooked and hard, it was just really bad. We did not buy Bierocks yesterday, because the bottoms of the very dark brown heavy looking bread was burnt. We will NOT be coming back. It is obvious they have changed to cheaper ingredients and hired very rude employees. read more

Went in for the boba, a bit overpriced however it was tasty, the older Chinese lady was alright however the other young cashier was very rude and moody she yelled at us to go wait outside in a very rude way and then yelled that our order was ready and then walked away. read more

Family owned and run businesses are an endangered species, and none more so than fine bakeries. My family visited the (original?) Carlock's in Arroyo Grande frequently over 50 years ago and were never disappointed. Happy to report that although the Carlock family has long since retired, the current family owners continues the consistent quality and flavors. They have egg, meat, and vegetarian items for breakfast, French pastries, danishes, and yes, donuts. Some items are there only some days a week, such as quiche, but all are reliably yummy. A couple years ago I wouldn't have bothered rating this place - they had a poor selection of mediocre items. But now, under new ownership they're coming back STRONG! Much greater selection of delicious baked goods to choose from, especially cookies! I love that they offer a variety of very good gluten-free, dairy-free quick breads for my friends with food allergies (although their g-f, d-f pumpkin chocolate chip is my go to favorite!) Their scones, though, are my weakness - best in town for my money and there are two other very good bakeries in town so that's saying something. And prices are much more reasonable at Carlock's than the other two places. ;) read more

Their is no doubt that Carlock's Bakery is a gem in Los Osos. Their cronuts with Bavarian cream is probably one of the best things I've ever tasted. We ordered a birthday cake from here. We asked for buttercream frosting. The cake came out with buttercream frosting but they proceeded to shortcut the roses with sugar roses, which if I asked for buttercream why wouldn't you do buttercream. These sugar roses were rubbery and not edible. We called to inquire about this. The decorator, then proceeded to lecture us on how we didn't specify. One, why wouldn't you ask that when you're taking the order and two, I ordered buttercream....what do you think I want. The decorator then informs me, "I'm the decorator and I do what I want." So I guess paying for the cake at this bakery means you get whatever they decide to put on it. I will never purchase a cake from here again. They are rude, the cake was dry, the cake had a lump right on top, and the roses are terrible. Not worth the money they want to charge. read more

Since this place has been sold, I just love it again! Everything that I have had is so amazing! The hand pies are really great and the quiche is so good. Well, we went to Carlock's for a Saturday morning donut run on July 9, and was very surprised to see that the filled donuts that were hand made had been replaced by an automated machine that filled the donuts, just like any you would find at a regular donut shop. No longer were they the glazed donuts with the filling as a glob on top, but rather your plain, run-of-the-mill filled donuts. When I expressed disappointment that this had changed, the new owners said they bought a machine that can three donuts at a time automatically. So the yummy lemon donuts that were glazed with the lemon filling heaped on top where now a powdered donut with the filling pumped inside. A lot of locals were concerned that when the new owners took over, that many of the tastes and unique features that made Carlocks so special would be gone, but the new owners firmly said things wouldn't change. Sadly, the change has begun. Some of the old stand-by pastries are gone now also. Alas, when I got the donuts home, my wife, who is senstive to food flavors, noted immediately that the donuts had a 'rancid oil' greasy taste, unlike the light flavor before. And the fillings were no longer the thick jellies, such as the raspberry, that was loaded with seeds and tasted very fresh. Now there were translucent and surgary sweet, just like any old donut shop. Very sad and disappointed. What made Carlocks so special and good tasting for so long is slowly being removed to make it just another bakery/donut shop. We already have those all over SLO county. You were special because you did things different, and cared about the products. That's why the locals adored and supported you. Mechanizing your process with cheap fillers doesn't make you special any more. Please retain the Carlocks quality and style. It's what made the bakery what it is. read more

When I was in pre-school, Wednesday was Carlock's Day. I would go with my mother in the morning and we would share a lemon poppy seed or strawberry cream cheese muffin for breakfast and wash it down with some chocolate milk. I always looked forward to Wednesdays. When I entered Elementary School, Thursday was Carlock's Day. I would go with my Aunt after school. She would always have a Russian Tea Biscuit and I would have either a lemon bar, German Chocolate Danish or a M&M Cookie. I always looked forward to Wednesdays. When I got to Middle School, Saturday would always be Carlock's Day. I would ride my bicycle down with my friends and we would have their Stuffed Crossiants and Bierocks for Breakfast. I always looked forward to Saturdays. In High School, Carlocks Day changed to Friday. I would wake up early and have a Doughnut and A Japaleno Cheese Fritter for breakfast in celebration that the week was almost over. Now that I'm in college, there is no Carlocks day. I still often find myself craving the outstanding bakery items I ate in my youth. Every time I go back, I'm reminded of how outstanding their food is. I have lived in Los Osos just over 2.5 years so this place was new to us. Very nice local friendly bakery. I read reviews of people who are not pleased with the new owners in comparison. I never get anything but friendly service.I love that they now have milk teas. I get the honeydew melon with juice poppers. Delish. They always remember my favorite. The desserts are always delish. I love the angel babies. Raspberry cake when they have it by the slice. The cookies are tasty..apple fritters...yum..I could go on. This place is dangerous to my waistline!! This place is less than grocery store quality. 3.50 for a ham and cheese "croissant" which was pretty much French bread rather than croissant. I would be so surprised if anything was actually made from scratch here. Luckily the gal working last saturday the 9th was very friendly. My fiance and I went here to do a cake tasting for our wedding - one of many for the trip. A really cool thing was that they make you little individual cakes for the tasting versus little slices which most others do. Of course they then charge you for them but nevertell you that initially - wasnt expensive but wasn't discussed either. The Bad part was that the cake really wasnt very good at all - pretty dry and their prices were WAY too high. Go to Morningstar or Christies Cake Creations instead.
