Came in on the weekend and barely missed the growing line. Cute little house store-front and small shop inside. Tables and seating outside if you wanted to enjoy your baked goods there. I purchased the pain au levain, in lieu of a baguette, for $12. The price is pretty steep for a loaf, but seems to be the going rate for these smaller boutique bake shops. The bread itself was warm when I purchased it, which was awesome. Enjoyed it with my coffee, but did find it to be a little doughy on the inside. Good flavor, but not something I would come back for. I'd rate it a solid 3.5. I also purchased the chocolate chip cookies. I think I completely went brain dead when I bought these, because I did read they were gluten-free and vegan, but still bought the pack of 6. Man, they looked like chocolate chip cookies, but didn't taste like chocolate to me, at all. For a regular chocolate chip cookie lover, it's a 1 star. For someone looking for a gluten-free and vegan cookie, this could be a winner. Maybe. read more

Hello! You had me at absolutely charming! First of all, I've never been to Morro Bay and it was probably the only torrential rainy day in a Century. Being from Seattle, I'm nothing but used to the rain. But this little visit to the bakery warmed my heart. As we drove to the bakery we stopped at Morro Rock, , so I could actually see the amazing 23 million year old monolith. So fun to see the surfers out there! As we started driving into a neighborhood to get to the basket, I was like, "What? Am I going to Gramma's house?" And then, we pull into the freaking cutest little beach house with a garden that made the bleakest day make you feel like sunshine and rainbows. Upon entry, the baked spices and smells blow your olfactories! Yummm! We felt the young lady was very overwhelmed with all the baking!! And maybe our dumbfoundedness was overwhelming. Or maybe I was overwhelmed with so many amazing options and goodies!! She had just pulled something out of the oven. We ordered lemon curd and raspberry tarts, brownies, curry croissants, ham and cheese croissant, french onion soup croissant and some other cookie that someone snuck in on the sly. Sadly, there was no seating there, so we had to take everything to go. Luckily we were only 10 min away. Everything was epically delicious. Especially the flaky curry croissants!!!! They really know how to do it!!! If we had more time we would try their bread. I can't imagine what this place is like when it's peak season but it must be crazy! It is a must visit!!! read more

A must stop for all things fresh baked, even for my gluten-free gang! I didn't know this was the same baker/owner as the former bakery in this spot (I think it was just a name change). The baker was really pleasant and helped me chat through some options for my boyfriend (not gluten free) and me (very gluten free). The baker said his wife has been the catalyst behind the GF option, so if you're reading this, thank you! My partner got the traditional pain au levain loaf, a sourdough croissant, and I got two chocolate chips cookies (GF and made with cashew milk) and an empanada. Don't sleep in...their loaves go fast. Local Take: Amazingly adorable place & owner! Home baked goodness here. This tiny but mighty place in a cute "two horse town" is not to be missed. The owner curated selections are unparalleled in fine taste! They are even happy to bake special orders with more than a two day notice. C-19 safe & friendly. Since it is at the very end of town on the left corner [coming in from the 101 that is] , it is all too easy to miss. It is diagonally across the way from the famous The Range restaurant....which is also a must. They do really great updates on their FB page, with all the goodies that they plan for special occasions or just for the heck of it. The owner is a hoot, has a wonderful personality, and it is a pleasure just to go here for a chat. She takes great pride in being the gourmet deli in this tiny place. It is miraculous as to the quality that one can find here. Almost everywhere one glances, you see examples of fine taste. Of course, if you are going points South [like to far away Pozo] or East [like Carizzo], this is the last stop before many dozens of miles of nothing but sightseeing. So...you need to gas up before you even get to Santa Margarita, left alone further. Here at this Deli, you can definitely find some picnic or other snacks to help on your trip. For those who are not local, Pozo is way past Santa Margarita Lake, and the almost ghost town is basically closed on weekdays....so do not expect anything but nice views. Pozo has a saloon which used to be a stagecouch stop as was Santa Margarita, but it is closed on weekdays....as is the wine tasting room for Vintage Cowboy. Vintage Cowboy is super cool. Also for those who do not know, the East Rd. all the way toward Carizzo Preserve is very long & windy. The are absolutely no facilities until you hit the Park & even that is iffy. Most times, there are few wildflowers around and people waste their time driving to the middle of nowhere for almost nothing & getting carsick in the process. I happen to sometimes enjoy the middle of nowhere, devoid of people. After getting to one bloom after all the flowers died, I had a surreal but wonderful drive up the forgotten road of Bitterwater, were I only saw rolling hills, ravines, cows, brown dead flowers, & no humans for dozens of miles. It was like being on Mars & it cleared the mind. In any case, Caliwala is a great Oasis before 1/2 day adventure toward points East, South, or even North...following the railroad. It is even a nice stop before or after hitting the "grade" as locals call the Cuesta grade above SLO-town on the 101. I welcome you to read up on the amazing history of this area. Tiny SM-town also offers a nice kid's playground, a zip line deal over vineyards & ancient Oyster fossils, & wine tasting at Ancient Peaks. For such a tiny place, it has a lot to offer. They Primarily serve sourdough loaves, but they do have some savory and sweet choices like stuffed croissants and tarts. The staff are very friendly and the pastries are delicious. I ordered a French onion croissant, but wasn't happy with how dark it was, they replaced it with no problem for a curry croissant which was delicious. Its a small place, so they have seating outside with some tables as long as the weather is nice thats no problem. The prices are decent. A little pricey however they are serving organic fresh made pastries that are clearly made with skill and care. Overall I highly recommend you give the place a try. read more

Caliwala (details regarding the name's origin are somewhat fuzzy) is what I imagine an old-time family neighborhood corner market / notions shop used to be: filled to the brim, but soothing and quaint; offering everything from deli items to unique gifts and souvenirs. Such a cute little store in the heart of Santa Margarita! It's in the downtown area (closer to the end of the downtown) and it carries a lot of cute local items including honey, handmade jewelry, cookies and kombucha! The kombucha is locally made and it is available on tap! I personally came here for the cookies. My favorite was the oatmeal toffee but my mom loved the peanut butter one. They also have an almond shortbread cookie made with almond flour. It tasted healthier than the normal flour shortbread cookies. It's a great spot for food and small gifts. They have fresh bread and also premade sandwiches in the fridge. If you are in the area, it's worth a stop! read more

What an absolute gem!!!! The almond croissant was perfect! And they make them with the sourdough starter. The beef empanadas were very satisfying. Nice flavor and a healthy portion of filling. The rosemary olive loaf with butter was so good I didn't even wait to get home before I ripped a piece off, dipped it butter and stuffed my face with it. Oh and they grind their flour in house.
