Fish and chips
Kerry W.

It's always nice to have a fish and chips place near me. It's a no frill kind of place. Not sure if they have tables for sitting down dining during non-covid time, but not now. The guy helping me out was polite and efficient. I ordered the halibut fish and chips, with a side of coleslaw and gravy. All this for $10. The halibut was on a much smaller portion, with plenty of chips to fill you up to make up for the little halibut (size matters). The gravy was watery. The coleslaw was more sweet and vinegary instead of creamy (but refreshing in a surprising way). The fish and chips were wrapped up in the traditional way - with newspaper. But for $10, I will go back.

My partner and I had to come downtown and wanted to try a new place for lunch. He had been craving fish & chips lately, and found this restaurant on Yelp. It's a small, old-school, mom and pop shop. There was a picture of the menu from a few years back that I found online that said Halibut fish & chips was only $8. I thought...no way, it can't be that cheap! You could get a piece of Halibut alone for $5. Insanity in this day and age! We called to confirm, and learned that the price had gone up....to $5.50! $5.50 for a piece of Halibut is incredible! We placed an order, and my partner picked it up. It's cash online, so make sure to bring money with you. I had a piece of fish and the coleslaw. The coleslaw was okay and had a sweetness to it. Although the fish itself didn't look like it was some fancy homemade batter, for $5.50, I really couldn't complain b/c it was still tasty. The owner of the shop was really friendly and personable as well. I'm not surprised this place has been in business for 15+ years!

The little take out place that seems frozen in time circa 1940. Fish and chips delicious, chips are crispy and abundant...halibut portion on the small side, but you're not paying much, its a cheap and quick lunch.

I love this place! The owner is such a sweetheart. Fish and chips are $8, and very straightforward. One piece of fish and a ton of fries.

Pearl Diver is an assuming spot. I had a good feeling looking at the menu but the true jackpot was…read morethe dining experience in person. Cozy atmosphere and the service was kind, making us feel relaxed. Maybe too relaxed that we ordered dessert even after being stuffed already. Starting with the mvp of the meal, the dessert - Sticky Toffee Pudding, did not disappoint. In fact, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was the best I've had. Tender snd delicate cake, ample syrup and the twist was some sort of sour tamarind or cherry candy on top. Perfect! The grilled mackerel was also absolutely divine. Really well prepared and meaty. The mussel dish was incredible too. The broth was gingery, garlicky and coconuty and very comforting to have on a cool night! I wish they had some sort of dry bread to go with it. However, the only bread option, focaccia was ordered. The focaccia was lovely on its own! Not an ideal pairing with the mussels but not bad either. I would absolutely revisit!

Very solid place that one probably had a similar experience if they went there 20 years ago…read more I had the moussaka and it was just what I wanted. The rice was actually a lot better than I expected. I know it's just a side, but rice at times from other Greek places isn't that great, and this was much better. My wife had the mix grill plate, and I helped. She absolutely loved the lamb. It was largely over the quality and the prep was fairly standard, but there's nothing wrong with that. The other parts didn't jump out, but were still perfectly good. The service was very attentive.

Having had moussaka ($33.95) at more chain-like Greek restaurants, Pantheon's version is lighter…read moreand fresher tasting. The potato layer feels fluffy and sandwiches thinly sliced eggplant, so the aubergine is rather pronounced. The ground beef mixture wasn't overly spiced and even the bechamel sauce was a thin layer, so it toasts the top but doesn't saturate the slice. Ultimately, it's not heavy so you could get through a full portion. A flaming saganaki ($19.95), the pan fried kefalotiri cheese, is a staple in Canadian Greek restaurants. It seems touristy to order but there's something endearing about setting a piece of cheese on fire and yelling "opa"! For me, the dish is more for the atmosphere than taste. Pantheon pan fries the cheese well, so it develops a crust even prior to flambeeing and serves it as a thick gooey slice. If only the accompanying bread wasn't so dry and mealy, a good saganaki calls for a better complement. Almost all their mains arrive with a sizeable Greek side salad that's smartly served first containing ample amounts of crumbled feta and some tomato, cucumbers, and onion over romaine. Their dressing is different, tamer and while still acidic there's a sweetness to it. Not sure, but perhaps they use a red wine vinegar and then blend the ingredients together so it's better combined? With the fishkebob souvlaki ($36.95) I was expecting fish, but it's really a seafood kebob containing shrimp, calamari and mushroom. It's cooked well with a faint grilled aroma, very tender, and lightly salted. Sadly, my steamed vegetables were merely carrots and didn't have the delicious garlicky green beans included on my friends' plates. Luckily, there was plenty with the moussaka so I could augment mine. At least there was an ample portion of roasted lemon potatoes that were soft and fluffy with a refreshing pronounced citrus finish. Pantheon doesn't skimp on the lamb chops that arrive with the entrée. And if you can't decide on what protein you'd like, their menu also offers some as add-ons. The lamb chop by the piece ($11.95) was bit gamier than I'd like but was cooked to a perfect medium doneness. A complimentary honey cake arrives for the table and is almost like having baklava in cake form. Just watch out, as the moist crumbly cake is difficult to pick up with a fork. Don't waste a bit of this delicious dessert, just use your fingers.
