The bad reviews here are kinda "fishy" (pun intended). They all date back a few years and are mostly from no people with no pictures and one review. My experience was pretty good. Me and the silver haired club (I've always wondered why fish and chips shops are always so big for the seniors?) packed this place on a Friday night. Service was good. I enjoyed the lightly battered fish. Me and fried foods don't get along as much we used to. I still love it, but not quite the other way around. Otherwise I'd probably be here more often. read more

This family owned fish and chip place has been in business for a very long time, and were previously located a few blocks from the new complex they're currently in. The food is always fresh and made to order. This location is much larger and nicer than the previous spot. Plenty of seating and fair amount of parking. Tables and washrooms are clean, well lit, and the service is always friendly. They also offer take out, but be prepared for a long wait as they're extremely busy! This is the worst experience I've ever had of fish and chips. Absolutely disgusting. The fish was old and smelly. It smell was overpowering. The batter was absolutely saturated in fat. Every time I cut into the fish the fat dripped off when actually I mentioned this to the owner. He told me if I didn't like fried food then I should not come here. They still charge me full price for both meals, water, shocking experience. I would recommend going anywhere else. The halibut house is 100% better than hamish's fish and chips. If you didn't know, Hamish has been around for decades. Their original location was at Pharmacy and St. Clair. Although I haven't had their fish n chips in a very long time, It's one that I've always recommended to people. A few weeks ago, I was in the Lebovic area when I saw their sign. Then the other day, my friend wanted to go out to eat and suggested fish n chips so naturally I wanted to go here. I'm sooooo happy we went as it tasted just as good as I remembered. Halibut - It looked smaller than other places but it's really all because of the batter ratio. Batter wasn't as thick as many other places and I say this in the best way. Halibut was so delicious, flaky and juicy. Batter was like tempura batter minus the greasiness. My meal came with one filet plus the chips but it was the perfect serving. 5/5. Chips/fries - Handcut fries but just slightly thinner than what you may be used to from most fish n chips joints. Was so so good. 5/5. Gravy - Ordered a side of gravy and lawd was it so so good! Have been going here for a while now and never disappointed with the food or the service. I usually get the halibut and a Greek salad - the salad is humongous! I balance the healthy salad with their delicious Onion Rings- yum! Would recommend the restaurant to anyone who likes fish and chips. read more

In a very empty plaza with many units waiting to be leased, you'll find Hamish Kitchen Restaurant. If it wasn't for it being in a corner lot, street side, you would probably miss it. Luckily for us, it caught our attention and we drove in to see what it was all about. Atmosphere was good. We were greeted by very friendly servers. The space is open, clean and spacious. We ordered: -homemade clam chowder ($6.25) -halibut fish n' chips ($13.05) -single fish only order of cod ($10.45) Everything tasted great. Exactly what one would expect. The soup was good. It would've been perfect if it was served with those little hexagonal oyster crackers you would typically have with clam chowder...but that's just me. I really enjoyed the halibut. It was not heavily battered like most places. It was lightly battered, flaky and you could actually taste the fish. The cod was good too but the halibut definitely is better. The only other downfall is that they serve the fish with little packs of tartar sauce, even for dine in customers. Purely esthetics...but it would look more appetizing if served with a little cup or something...instead of little packs just thrown on the table. To top it off, they serve Kawartha Dairy! I finally found another fish and chips joint near my neighbourhood. I'm a little sad that Aunt Mary's have been closedown since the pandemic. But this new place is pretty good. The fish is Huge and you get plenty of fries. Fries are excellent and fish are fresh and not greasy. The service is very friendly and always accommodating. The take out service is well presented and very organized. They give plenty of condiments which a bonus because you never have enough. read more

Used to go their old location and liked it there. Been to their new location (this one) several times and are always leave full and satisfied. Service is friendly and efficient, the fish has an amazingly light batter and the fries are always hot and fresh. 4* because they don't have the best tartar sauce and they should really make their own onion rings. This review is for the relatively new location on Davis drive in New Market I grew up in the pharmacy area, so over the decades I have seen Hamish sold to new owners on a couple occasions. I have since moved north also decades ago. I looked for years for other fish n chips stores that could match those memories for taste, batter and quantity of the fish portion etc. I thought I had found it in New Market with a competitor. Everything was once again good in life until, I was driving along one day on Muloch Dr. I thought it couldn't be, sure enough a massive sign reading Hamish fish and chips, with a beautiful Union Jack underneath. The fish n chips are just what I remembered, lightly batter, crispy, good fries etc. The staff are friendly, courteous and efficient. Even the menu is as original as it always was, I've never found mealie pudding anywhere else. Well this is now my new go to fish n chips, place. I hope Hamish does well in this area, I wish them the best of luck as I really would like to stick with them for the next couple decades. read more

Met a friend here. She highly recommended this place for lunch. Fish and chips are the mainstay here, one of my favourite meals, so I was curious to taste their product. I was not disappointed. I ordered the fish and chips ($12, if memory serves me, and a not bad price). My friend ordered the Fish and a Few plus the cole slaw side. We both ordered the halibut. The fish was fresh and had the most delicious batter, light and tasty. Fries were fresh as well. The slaw looked pretty good and according to my friend, was fresh, crisp and tasty. Service was prompt. Prices are pretty reasonable. I enjoyed my meal and would definitely recommend this place to friends. The restaurant is clean and well lit and utilitarian. $9.79 or something close to that sum for a haddock and fry feast for lunch! The fish was light and a wee bit greasy, but it's deep-fried so what can you really expect? To be honest, I ate the whole serving, so I dare say I enjoyed it! The restaurant is clean and spacious though I do feel I left smelling like the frier. Maybe the joint would benefit from a better exhaust system in the kitchen, but I know I am being a fusspot. Overall, I really enjoyed my lunch here and I do look forward to returning for my next monthly calorie splurge! The old location was just a few blocks from our house, but we're happy to drive a bit further to have excellent fish and chips. We went so often that one of the previous waitresses knew our order by heart. Fish is hot and flaky, unlike other places that have heavy batter and are just refrying the fish, which turns it to mush. I also like that you can order "fish and a few" and only get a few fries and not be given a pound of French fries to try and eat. Been here several times as it was good. Today we came for dinner, ordered 2 fish and few chips and 2 orders of seafood platter. Our food came but the taste is overwhelmed with the taste of an old and burned oil. Complained about it but the waitress said if we I don't like that's fine and would not charged. I said I came here to eat. While eating the shrimp and few chips I couldn't take it and approached the other lady and asked it they changed their oil everyday. She replied "yes" and ask her permission if I can check the fryer. To my surprise the oil was so dark, no wonder my food taste overwhelmingly old oil. The younger waitress came back furious as I asked her questions especially I mentioned about the old oil and asked us to leave. I then replied that as a customer I have the right to asked questions and even call the city/public health about the health hazards of using recycled and old oil.
