Best fish and chips I've had! Simple but charming atmosphere with excellent service. Well worth the cost!

Likely an unpopular opinion but... I saw this restaurant mentioned on social media and based on what was said, I really wanted to try it. When went on a Saturday evening and there was quite the line! We were advised of the process by some of the regulars and we made our way to the front to place our order. And then waited. I was amazed by the amount of orders being sent out. Surely it had to be every bit as good as what I'd heard about online. We ordered two halibut with fries and mushy peas to go. Maybe it would have been better had we'd stayed and eaten there though. The batter on the first was not crispy but the fish was quite meaty. I was definitely not a fan of the mushy peas. Apparently this place has been around for decades but this was the first I'd heard of it even having lived in Pickering for 30 years. I'm not sure how I missed it before. I'm not sure what the hype is all about. As I said, likely an unpopular opinion but I doubt I'll come back. I will say though, the staff and service was amazing. read more

I grew up in Pickering and we loved Jasper's Fish and Chips. On a regular basis. Either eating in. Or take out to bring back home. Awesome large portions of the halibut and the chips were always crispy and soft at the same time. Glad to see it's still thriving. Really good quality fish and chips. The owners who are also the server/chef are very friendly. It's just very expensive! I ordered the halibut fish with 1/2 the chips and after taxes it came out to be around $20. So, it's probably not a place I would come weekly for lunch. Jasper Fish & Chips is another one of those local businesses that I've ignored, even though I've lived in the same neighbourhood for over twenty years. I had arranged to meet some friends here before going to see a movie across the street but I was running late and called them to order for me before I got there. It took only 8 minutes for me to arrive but my food was already at the table, covered with another plate. Oh no, it's going to be soggy, sweating under that plate. Wrong! The very generous portion of fish, and fries, were still surprisingly very crispy. Mmm, this was a very large and delicious piece of fish, halibut, I believe. Behind the crispy, not crusty, batter, the fish was moist and flaky. The fries were cooked just the way I like them. My only complaint, if I would even call it that, is the little packs of tartar sauce. I like tartar sauce and I must have gone through about 6 of these little packs to cover this piece of fish. I would definitely prefer a house-made sauce in a portion cup. Please, Jasper? The British inspired decor is simple without being divey. The menu is also simple, mostly fish & chips, but offers shrimps, scallops, meat pies, haggis, black pudding, and mushy peas, all English favourites. Jaspers is a very popular fish n chip (or chippy, if you're British) spot in Pickering. Pro Tip: DO NOT GO ON A FRIDAY NIGHT unless you want to wait a lonnngg time. We ordered two halibut and chip dinners and onion rings to go. Unfortunately the onion rings were missing from our order when we got home which sucked. The fish itself was great, the batter wasn't super thick or oily, and the fries were nice and thick cut. Overall it was a great dinner. A bit on the pricier side for fish n chips, but halibut is usually more expensive anyways. read more

In our never ending quest for delicious lunch items, we finally got around to to this little fish and chips joint. Its a humble little restaurant in Pickering, with a few tables and takeout. We phoned in our order to take back to the office and voila, ready on time and waiting for us when we got there. I ordered the one piece of Halibut and 1/2 order of chips. The portion is generous enough that was enough to satisfy me for lunch. Everything was certainly fresh, and definitely tasty. The fish was light, the batter was crisp, the oil used to cook it must be very clean because it not soggy at all and was very well prepared. I would love to come back here again. Next time i think maybe we will eat in just for a change of scenery. I'm a fan of this place now. read more

I've lived in the Pickering area for over 30 years and been coming to Jasper for a long time. I agree that they are a little pricey but their food is really good. The Halibut is battered well without feeling oily and the fries are always fresh, hot and delicious. Highly recommend everyone gives this place a try. read more

Staff friendly and appreciative of business especially during COVID Ordered halibut and half fries. Fish was nicely cooked fries just right. This place serves traditional English fish and chips along with other British favorites like mushy peas and black pudding. My friend took me here when she had a craving for fish and chips one evening. I usually go to a place down the street for me so I thought it would be good to try a different place. The inside of this place was interesting to look around while we dined in.There were a few other people dining in, but mostly take out orders for the night. I got the Halibut and onion rings. The fish was pretty good, a very light a crispy batter. The onion rings were nothing special. Meh. That's generally how I feel about this place. Customer Service: I was considering giving it a 2-star rating. But their counter service really was above par. And many of the customers appeared to be on a first name basis with staff. Food: Meh. Definitely wasn't bad or anything. But I didn't feel the urge to write home about it. They have a choice between halibut and haddock (I think it was haddock...) - chose the halibut as my fam prefers that. Was decent, but wasn't excited about the batter crust... A bit too bland/heavy deep fried oil tasting. I couldn't finish my portion - and my capacity for eating deep fried food could be likened to a middle aged man with cholesterol problems stranded on a deserted island. Even my dude friends can attest to this. Ambiance: Did take-out, but it's small so I got a good idea. Wall-to-wall tapestries of different townships in the UK, as well as random international locations. Appears to be a spot for "regulars" more than the drop-in type. Very casual. Price: I admit I over-ordered for our group of three, and that had an effect on the price. Buuut - and maybe I'm crazy (wouldn't be a new notion) - it seemed pricier than one would expect for fish 'n chips. Just sayin'. Been wanting to try out this place for awhile now, tried it out on Friday as I had a huge craving for fish and chips. My husband and I ordered the halibut and chips, son ordered the shrimp. Food was very good. The fish was nicely battered and not greasy at all, crispy and super nice. The fries were chunky and delicious. The service was very good, maybe a little too quick. We ordered, eat and were out of there is less than 1/2 hour. Only complaint was the price for the portions received. Total bill for two pieces of (small portion) fish and fries, plus 6 fried shrimp, one coke and one hot tea was over 45$ We would consider going back but will not make it a regular spot due to the price, on the other hand, as I prefer to give my business to local mom and pop joints I'm sure we'll come back semi-soon! read more

This place has the best fish and chips in Pickering. They owners are adorable, friendly and the service is fast. It's so popular especially on Fridays that there is a line up out the door.
