Horrible overpriced meal! Worst clam chowder I've ever had! More batter than fish and it tasted nasty! I do not recommend to eat here!

What to say about this place- we really really enjoyed our food. I got the crab roll (definitely worth the price!!!!) I loved the toasted bread and the crunch from the celery and lettuce. Chowder was New England style-which I love. Just needed some butter on top- but otherwise perfect. There were a TON of clams in our chowder. Other places I'm lucky if I get 5 in a small cup, like what I got. The sourdough bread was SOUR! Such a nice change from other bread bowls we've had. Boyfriend thought it was too sour- don't mind his wrong opinion, though. I loved it and stole his top to dip in my cup of chowder. Whoever made that starter should be proud! I loved this little place. Dog friendly as well. It was nice to sit outside with our buddy and enjoy delicious food. Owners were great. Service was wonderful and fast. Captain Bobs is right next to Marsh's free museum and is always a great stop. If there more than 3 adults, consider outside seating or ordering "to go". Not much outside but there's a few tables inside. Your orders are made when you order them. Such great chowder here. Today they had smoked salmon chowder and clam chowder. We ordered 2pc fish and chips with a cup of chowder and a crab roll with a cup of chowder. Super delicious and you won't regret stopping here. Parking can be tight because Marsh's is busy so you might do better parking and walking but we've been lucky and found a spot in the lot. read more

We ate here every day during our visit to Long Beach. We had clam chowder, smoked salmon chowder, chili cheese fries and crab cakes. Everything is sooo delicious we had to keep going back. I typically don't like crab cakes (too much filler, not enough crab) but Bob's cakes are all crab and are cooked perfectly! And you have to try them with their homemade tartar sauce . We've had their fish and chips before and they are so good too. Every day they have a new special or chowder. We love this place!! 7/7/19 Just spent the 4th weekend and ate there again every day. Took my mom who always loves crab cakes and says these were the best she's ever had. Unfortunately, they had the most rude and disrespectful staff I have ever experienced. I was yelled at and snapped at twice by the woman & man working there just while I was waiting in line. I apparently was standing in the wrong spot, which warranted the staff literally shouting instead of just talking like a normal human? The facilities are small with inadequate seating, slow service, and rude staff. FORTUNATELY there are many other local restaurants with delicious food and friendly staff on the peninsula! We got chowder and a crab roll. The crab was great, but the roll was just OK. The chowder was nice--extremely thick. If you're there, then this place is convenient and reasonably priced. The fried shrimp is my wife's favorite, and Sunday's Smoked Salmon Chowder keeps us coming back ! We live here on the coast and this is one of the best places to eat or order take-out! Going there during the slow times probably didn't help me, I was looking forward to some cheeseburger chowder that other reviewers had mentioned and he didn't have any that day. I had a pretty good idea of what Captain Bobs Chowder would be based on the pictures and their website. However upon arriving I found they had extended their menu and raised their prices. I was expecting a small, coastal restaurant that was low budget and low priced. $7 for chowder in a bread bowl sounded like a great deal, but seemed right for the plastic spoon I would be eating it with. Once there the price for breadbowl was $8.95, not a huge difference but the entire menu had increased, and now what was supposed to be a cheap quick lunch ended up as only quick. We arrived Monday night and was looking forward to enjoying some crab rolls for lunch the following day. Capt. Bob's was closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so we planned on stopping by before we left town. We've tried two different crab rolls in town so we were excited to try theirs. We did our morning walk through town and stopped by Marsh's Free Museum (right next door to Capt. Bob's). We met Cathy as she was getting the place ready to open. She was friendly and nice. We did go back later and ordered the Crab Roll and Octopus Chowder. The crab roll was the best we've had in a long time! Fresh crab with celery, salt and pepper on a romaine lettuce packed inside a New England split top bun homemade by Cathy herself. Unlike some crab rolls we've had, Capt. Bob's isn't swimming in mayo. You can really taste the freshness and sweetness of the Dungeness crab. The chowder was thick and delicious (although it had some spice to it). Their menu is limited to two types of chowder, fish n' chips, fish sandwich, crab cakes, hot dog, a kids menu and some combo options. That's all they truly need as their crab roll is amazing! Having tried multiple chowder houses across the Oregon/Washington coastline I do have to say bob's will stand out as a clear favorite in my mind. So much so I feel a need to review our experience. Right off the bat we noticed the open kitchen, bob himself at the fryer, and a well cleaned small yet cozy place to eat. It was also nice to eat chowder from modern, clean well kept chowder pots rather than the old degraded and corroded kettles we were served from in Seattle. Chowder was on point, (for me at least, Chowder can be served a million different ways however bob keeps it traditional) my girlfriend had the coconut shrimp. Absolutely amazing. Delicious! The first time we ran into Captain Bob's Chowder house, was when he was on the main strip. It had been 5 or so years and we didn't realize, he moved in next to Marshes Museum. Glad we found him again. I had the smoked salmon chowder and it was delicious to say the least and the Dungeness crab roll, that was pretty good too. My wife and daughter had the clam chowder bread bowl and it didn't disappoint one bit. It was the same chowder recipe we ate years ago and did we miss it. Bob was very courteous, easy to work with, and offered us some tips for our future visits. Leaving the Antique Mall 'I noticed a little hole in the wall' next door. Very small place with 3 tables. Nothing fancy. Bob was by himself. I'm not sure if that is always the case, but he has it down. The place is open so you can see your food being prepared. He was very friendly and moving quite quickly to get orders out and acknowledging the young couple that walked in as he was helping a family. We ordered couple of clam chowders and crab cakes. The clam chowder was good. It could used more potatoes and clams. Maybe an off day? It was not too thick which was nice. Many places think thick is better but then it looses flavor. I am picky about chowder so I will leave it at good. The bread sticks are par baked. Which means partially baked and suppose to be baked off. They are served just as they come which is frozen so they are just thawed. The breadsticks would of not lost one star for this review if they were served as intended. Baked and warm..... not ........thawed and cold. The crab cakes...way more then good. Exclamation point. These did not have a lot of filler but just enough to bind them together. The flavor was outstanding. They were moist without being greasy. To my surprise, the coleslaw, my husband never eats at restaurants....was gone in no time.. I also thought the flavor was great. When we ordered I ask what the crab roll has in it....as he got busy Bob did not forget my question and took a few seconds to bring us a sample.....it was a good crab mixture but I am glad we ordered the crab cakes. When you walk up to this place it smells amazing! The staff are very friendly. The crab roll was just ok. Not worth what they charge. The clam chowder was the second to worst I have had unfortunately. Way over cooked clams. It just tasted like potatoes with crappy clams. I wanted to love this place. I did go at the end of the day. Don't let the look of the restaurant on the inside turn you off from going here! It's a little small, not fancy, and the kitchen is right there. But it's clean. The food was really good. Visited here over the weekend with my boyfriend, and we were hangry and needed a place to eat and quickly. The menu here is short and sweet with no frills. Boyfriend went for a chowder bread bowl, and I went for the fish & chips. It was $12.95 for the fish & chips and I was reluctant and expecting of two tiny pieces of fish and some fries. It was actually two huge pieces of fish on a big pile of fries. It came with a side of coleslaw which I didn't eat because I hate coleslaw - therefore I can't speak on it. Their tartar sauce here was bomb! I started dipping my fries in it, even. The fish wasn't fishy (a good thing) but the batter kind of fell off which was disappointing. It's a traditional New England chowder and not overloaded with potatoes like some places. I saw they had some Salmon chowder too. We are in Long Beach for a quick weekend visit, so we had to be choosy about where we stopped for eats. Captain Bob's was one that stood out from our visit 2.5 years ago, and we're happy to report that the food is still outstanding -- the kind of seafood I expect to find from larger, trendier restaurants, but rarely find. This isn't a fancy place, but if you don't mind paper dishes and plastic silverware, it's a great spot for quality seafood. Today we stopped in around 3:00, hoping to beat the dinner rush, and we just barely made it -- and I can tell you that Bob was hopping as we left (he was a one-man show today, and he was working hard). Bob was out of hot dog buns when we got there, so we couldn't do the crab rolls; but he still had plenty of crab, so I went with crab cakes and a cup of chowder. The crab cakes were excellent -- fried with a crisp crust, but with very little bread for binder -- which means lots of great crab flavor. I opted for sweet chili sauce, and it was a great choice. The chowder was exactly what I was anticipating during the 10 minute walk in the cold wind; thick but not pasty, and full of clams and potatoes -- an outstanding compliment to the crab cakes. My wife went with coconut shrimp and fries, and the kids with cod fish n' chips -- both options were cooked perfectly, with a crisp, golden brown crust on the shrimp and the fish. Bob didn't skimp on the portions, either -- we walked out with a full box of leftovers. My 14-y.o. son doesn't fill up easily, but he could only finish half of his "chips". I upped my rating from 4 to 5 stars, simply because it's so hard to find really good seafood on the coast these days. read more

Well I walked in and asked if my soup could be extra hot due to take out and I was told no? And no microwave also stated. So I only had a few bites of Luke warm chowder that day. Coming from Vancouver, BC, my boyfriend and I stayed in Long Beach overnight before heading to Portland. I obviously researched where to eat, and I decided we would go for a light lunch the day that we headed out of Long Beach. That was when Captain Bob's menu fit in perfectly. We arrived and were happy to see that Marsh's Free Museum was right next door. The receptionist at our hotel had mentioned Marsh's, and so we took a quick look through before heading into Captain Bob's. Captain Bob himself was sitting at the counter as we tried to decide on what to get! There was a clam chowder and a scallop mushroom chowder on the menu. We chose to get both, though that meant missing out on crab cakes which also sounded great. Our chowders were decently sized for the price we paid and also came with a mini baguette type of bread and "oyster chips". Both chowders were amazing, I personally loved the clam chowder and my boyfriend loved the scallop mushroom chowder. So honestly, this place is great and if you're in town it's a must try! read more

Cozy little restaurant with good eats. The chowder is good and has lots of clams. The breadstick helps clean up all of that deliciousness your spoon can't get. They stock Dad's Old Fashioned root beer too. The atmosphere makes you feel like you're on the dock, right next to the fishin vessels. Worth the visit. read more
